Florida football coach Urban Meyer has another reason to dislike Georgia.
Meyer’s daughter Nicki, a volleyball player at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Fla., signed a letter of intent Monday to play for Georgia Tech.
“She was looking for something close in the Southeast, but not an SEC school, for obvious reasons,” said her high school and club coach, Jeff Reavis.
Meyer helped Buchholz to the Class 6A state championship as a junior. Reavis said Meyer, who plays libero, drew interest from Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Ohio and Utah.
Nicki visited Tech this summer with her parents and was quickly won over, Reavis said. Reavis, who is friends with Jackets coach Bond Shymansky, said he thought she could have a chance to play immediately.
“She’s a super athlete as far as foot speed and running down the ball,” Reavis said. “She understands the game really well.”
Reavis didn’t rule out the possibility of the Florida coach dropping in to watch Nicki play. He noted that he took a plane after a game last year in order to make it to Nicki’s state final match.
Said Reavis, “He’s really turned into a volleyball junkie.”
The Jackets received national letters of intent from three other recruits, including Monique Mead, a right-side hitter from Landmark Christian. The others were outside hitter Susan Carlson (Pasadena, Calif.) and setter Jordan Kissman (Aurora, Colo.).
