Georgia Tech will practice today and take Sunday off.

When the Jackets resume preparations for Miami on Monday, coach Paul Johnson hopes to see quarterback Josh Nesbitt and defensive tackle Vance Walker on the field.

“They’re day-to-day,” Johnson said following his team’s Friday practice.

Tech plays the Hurricanes on Thursday at Bobby Dodd Stadium in its final regular-season ACC game.

Nesbitt and Walker sprained ankles against North Carolina last week and have missed the team’s first three practices this week. Right tackle David Brown (spinal injury) and B-back Quincy Kelly (undisclosed non-football medical condition) also did not practice.

Left guard Cord Howard (head) returned Friday.

‘Canes look good against Hokies

Miami put on a show Thursday night in its 16-14 victory against Virginia Tech. The Hurricanes had six sacks and held Hokies running back Darren Evans, who ran for 253 yards last week, to 43 yards.

Said Johnson, “They’re impressive; they play hard; they’re very athletic; they run the ball. It would be hard not to be impressed watching them play. That’s the way they’ve been on film.”

What might have been for Tech

Had Tech beaten North Carolina a week ago, Miami’s victory against Virginia Tech would have put the Jackets even closer to a spot in the ACC championship game.

One part of the formula for the Jackets to win the Coastal Division required Virginia Tech to finish with three losses. The Hurricanes gave the Hokies loss No. 3.

But because the more important part of the scenario included Tech holding at two league losses, that route to the ACC title game went out the window when they lost to the Tar Heels.

“I’m trying not to think about [Virginia Tech losing],” defensive end Derrick Morgan said. “I’m trying to put it in the past because all I do is get frustrated if I think about it. I’m just trying to keep a positive attitude and look forward.”

Tech still has a narrow chance to win the division. Today, a North Carolina loss to Maryland could help.
