Tech QBs under the gun during 11-on-11 drills

For the first time this year, Georgia Tech went through some 11-on-11 drills, in pads. For the most part, it was the first-team offense versus the first-team defense, and so forth.

As expected, the offense looked brilliant at times, but more often than not, it looked like they were still learning.

Presumed starting quarterback Josh Nesbitt overthrew receivers on deep patterns, and occasionally put too much air under the ball, allowing a cornerback to recover and make a play.

But twice he dazzled the small crowd watching the morning practice with runs, faking the pitch, tucking it under and juking past the linebackers and through the secondary.

He was the best runner of the morning.

Freshman Jaybo Shaw, presumably competing for the No. 2 job, worked mostly with the No. 2 offense, and didn't look particularly sharp. He made a poor pitch in the 11-on-11s, and then he mishandled a snap.

None of the others - Tevin Washington, Bryce Dykes or Calvin Booker stood out either.

There was one series where Shaw mishandled the snap, then Nesbitt over threw an open receiver, then Washington mishandled the snap, then Booker underthrew the ball and was picked off.

"Good and bad," is how coach Paul Johnson called the morning practice and the play of his quarterbacks. "There's a lot of work to do and some young guys are going to have to push through."

Johnson said that there really is not a depth chart yet, but that will change soon.

"In a week or so, we'll have a better idea and we won't be repping as many people, particularly at quarterback," he said.

Big catch

Demayrius Thomas made the first big catch in pads Monday, taking a 50-yard pass from Nesbitt to the end-zone.

Good and bad

Receiver Andrew Smith dropped an easy catch, but made up for it with two nice runs on a pitch and a toss sweep.

Lineman out

Walk-on back-up long snapper Jeff Lentz, a redshirt sophomore from Lassiter High School in Marietta, injured his knee in practice over the weekend and is likely out for the season.

Scrimmage set?

If all goes according to plan, Tech will hold its first scrimmage Saturday. Those plans should be announced soon. Tech will hold two-a-days Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 and 5:15, while Tuesday and Thursday, they will practice once, at 3 p.m.
