If Georgia Tech has to hit its way to a regional championship, the Yellow Jackets might have the bats to do it. They've scored 49 runs in their past five games, and four of those games were against teams playing in the NCAA tournament.
Tech was behind by five runs in the sixth inning against Miami and came back to take the lead. Tech was behind by four runs after seven innings against
N.C. State and came back to win.
Those two games, against the No. 1 national seed and the No. 1 seed in the Raleigh Regional, "prepared us more than any other games for the regionals," Yellow Jackets catcher Jason Haniger said. "We've proved it to ourselves that we can come back on any team in the country."
Stacking the field
Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall is a fervent opponent of the current regionalized regionals. The coach wants something more akin to the NCAA basketball tournament where the top seeds are put against the bottom seeds no matter their geographical location.
That way some regions, like Athens or Coral Gables, Fla., are not stacked. Speaking of that Athens regional, it has three teams who have been to the CWS in the last two years. Tech and Georgia were both there in 2006. Louisville made it to Omaha in 2007.
"This is a tremendous regional," Hall said. "You look at this regional, you have got the SEC champion, you have got the Big East champion and you have got the Atlantic Sun champions. You have got three champions. We are the only one who didn't win something."
Eye on Louisville
LSU has stolen most of the very few college baseball headlines over the past few weeks. The Tigers have won 20 straight games and won the SEC Tournament. But there is another streaking team out there, Louisville.
"If it wasn't for LSU everybody would be talking about how well Louisville is playing right now," Hall said. "They haven't lost many games."
The Cardinals are 17-2 in their last 19 games. They have done it with hitting and pitching, The hitting has come from Big East co-player of the year, Chris Dominguez.
"You hit as many home runs as their third baseman has hit and have 74 RBIs in college baseball you are doing a lot of damage," Hall said.
Dominguez has 20 home runs to go along with those RBIs. Second baseman Justin McClanahan is coming off a Big East Tournament in which he hit .571 with 12 RBI. He set or tied five Big East Tournament records.
On the mound Justin Marks is 9-1 with a 2.21 ERA.
"His numbers shake me up and his only loss was 1-0 to the Citadel," Hall said.
