Zagreb, Croatia — Former Georgia Tech basketball player Tony Akins tested positive for marijuana and was suspended for one year by the Croatian basketball federation.

Akins, who played at Georgia Tech from 1999-2002, said he is innocent and asked that his B sample to be analyzed.

"It is strange that the test turned out positive," he said. "I know I'm clean."

The 27-year-old guard was tested by the World Anti-Doping Agency after playing for his club team Split on May 3. He was suspended until May 20, 2009, and fined $4,300.

The Croatian federation will pass on its decision to basketball's world governing body.
