Green Bay, Wis. — Falcons nose tackle Grady Jackson wanted to show the Green Bay organization it made a mistake by not re-signing him after the 2005 season.
On the Packers’ first play from scrimmage, Jackson stormed into the backfield and got a sack on quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
“It went well,” Jackson said. “I had a good time playing in there. It just felt good to hear the fans calling my name.
“It felt good when they were saying that I should have never left. It was a good thing coming back here and getting the win.”
Only John Abraham and defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux for the Falcons this season before Jackson earned his first.
“We figured that it was going to be a pass on the first play of the game, I felt the pressure and kept on pushing the guard,” Jackson said. “I came off and there was the sack.”
Jackson finished with two tackles, as the Packers tried to run the ball outside. Also, Jackson came off the field with the Falcons went to a 3-3-5 defense against the Packers myriad off four wide receiver sets.
“Don’t’ let Grady fool you with his agility and his ability to get the edge on those guards and centers,” middle linebacker Keith Brooking said. “We started off fast after he got that sack.”
Dropsies
A week after dropping six passes, the Falcons had two drops in the first half.
On the Falcons’ second possession, running back Jerious Norwood dropped a pass third-and-six from Green Bay’s 24-yard line. He had the yardage for the first down.
The Falcons has to settle for a 42-yard Jason Elam field goal.
Quarterback Matt Ryan had completed six straight passes to open the game.
Baker starts
Left tackle Sam Baker returned to the starting lineup after missing last week’s game.
He suffered a concussion against Tampa Bay, but played the next week against Kansas City. He left that game at half time with an illness.
“It was very good to see Sam back out there,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said.
Baker said he was fine after the game and suffered no setbacks.
“It was huge to come here, in this hostile environment and pull out a W,” Baker said.
No-huddle
The Falcons went into their no-huddle offensive attack on their fourth possession, which ended with Ryan tossing a 22-yard touchdown pass to Roddy White over Packers cornerback Will Blackmon to put the Falcons up 17-7.
“We did a good job of that today,” Ryan said. “Guys executed that pretty good today. We made enough plays in different situations to win the game.”
Ryan and Blackmon were teammates at Boston College.
Injury corner
Center Todd McClure, who had made his 101st consecutive start, suffered a left calf injury on the team’s first possession. He returned to the game.
Stopping Rodgers
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 25-of-37 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns.
“With him being nicked up, we knew we had to be around him,” said Abraham, who had his seventh sack of the season. “Not necessarily sacking him, but getting around him and making him jittery.”
