Flowery Branch — Test are being run on rookie left tackle Sam Baker, who has not finished the past two games after suffering a concussion against Tampa Bay on Sept. 14.
Baker started Sunday against Kansas City but did not return after halftime because of flu-like symptoms, including nausea and dizziness. Baker was excused from Monday’s film session and did not practice Wednesday.
“We’ve had some tests run,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “What I can tell you right now is that Sam is feeling better today than he did on Monday and than what he did on Tuesday. It’s really going to be day-to-day in terms of where he is.”
Against Tampa Bay, Baker apparently suffered a concussion after hitting his head on a player’s knee while executing a cut block.
The Falcons are not sure if Baker’s current conditions are related to the concussion, but it’s doubtful that the team would be running tests if Baker merely had a cold or the flu.
“We can’t say whether it was related to what happened in Tampa,” Smith said.
If Baker cannot play Sunday against Carolina, Todd Weiner would likely get the nod. He replaced Baker in both games.
“Sam is a guy who’s very important to our football team, so we are going to be cautious and make sure that he’s ready to come back,” Smith said.
Also, wide receiver Laurent Robinson suffered a left knee sprain against the Chiefs.
“Any time you are dealing with the knee and it’s not a ligament or meniscus or something like that, you are very fortunate,” Smith said.
Robinson was still wearing a heavy brace Wednesday. Rookie Harry Douglas slides up to the No. 3 receiver position until Robinson returns.
