Williams' weight troubles coaches
Falcons want third-string safety to shed excess pounds

Flowery BranchJimmy Williams, the Falcons' top draft pick in 2006, said he annoyed the coaching staff by reporting to offseason workouts overweight. He is said to weigh more than 230 pounds, although he is listed at 212.

"They're a little upset about that," Williams said of his weight gain. "They want me like 215. Me at 215 is skinny. It's me trying to get down to what they want."

Williams, who is running with the third team at free safety, said he has endured unspecified personal issues that have taken his focus away from football. Williams missed two days of a three-day voluntary minicamp in April to go home to Hampton, Va.

"It's been a tough offseason because I've had some personal stuff off the field that caused me to miss like two, three weeks. So I can understand being third on the depth chart," Williams said, declining to discuss specifics of his off-field situation. "It's something I'm going to have to work through."

Williams was drafted to become the starting right cornerback, which failed to materialize. He was moved to free safety last season after Chris Houston, drafted in the second round, eventually assumed the right cornerback spot. Williams could not win the starting free safety job from Chris Crocker.

Atlanta signed Erik Coleman this spring in free agency to take over for Crocker, whose contract expired. Williams was expected to challenge Coleman; instead, he may have put himself in position where a roster spot is not guaranteed.

"It's been a process since I got here, but whatever I got to do to get on the field, I've got to do it," Williams said. "It's frustrating, I ain't going to lie, but I try to stay positive. Coach [Mike] Smith and the coaches have a plan for me. One day, I hope soon, I'll see it."

Weiner targets training camp

Falcons right tackle Todd Weiner, who's recovering from knee surgery, is hoping to return by training camp. Weiner and Smith said Weiner was ahead of schedule and that he could start running as early as next week.

Weiner battled problems with his left knee for most of last season before being placed on injured reserve. He had a micro-fracture procedure after arthroscopic surgery failed to remedy the damage.

Ryan impressive in two-minute drill

Matt Ryan was sharp running the Falcons' two-minute drill at the end of practice Monday. Playing with the majority of players on the No. 1 unit, Ryan completed 5 of 5 passes to drive the offense 65 yards for a touchdown. He completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Eric Weems, who was in for Roddy White (hamstring), with 30 seconds to play.

No ceiling placed on rookie QB

Ryan has to learn the offense before he will get a chance to get on the field, Smith said.

"We are not going to rule out anything in terms of who is going to start," Smith said. "We are not going to put a ceiling on any of our players, whether it's the quarterback, offensive tackle, linebacker. We are going to let them go out and compete.

"I will say this, the quarterback position is probably one of the more difficult positions to make the transition. But if anybody can do it, Matt is a guy that can."

Ryan has been working as the No. 3 quarterback behind starter Chris Redman and backup Joey Harrington.

Rebuilt knee limits Shockley

Quarterback D.J. Shockley did not participate in any of the team drills as he battles back from knee surgery that landed him on injured reserve after he tore his ACL last preseason.

"He will get an opportunity to compete," Smith said. "He brings a very different dynamic from the other quarterbacks that we have, in terms of he can run the ball and do some things with his feet. That's a interesting dynamic to have."
