Flowery Branch — Several veteran players recovering from injuries took part in the Falcons' first mandatory mini-camp on Saturday.

Tailback Michael Turner (shoulder) and linebacker Michael Boley (ankle) participated in most drills after being medically withheld from a voluntary mini-camp in April.

Quarterback D.J. Shockley and wide receiver Brian Finneran, both trying to make comebacks from season-ending knee injuries, went through the majority of the dual practice sessions.

For Finneran, who wore a heavy brace on his right knee, just going through a non-contact practice is a huge step. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in consecutive years during practice. He last played in 2005.

"There were days when you question yourself and wonder what the heck you're doing," Finneran said about attempting to resurrect his career after two years away. "I want to be out there and be productive for one more season — at least. It would mean everything, unbelievable to get back. I know it's a long shot. I know there are a lot of young guys here, 12, 13 receivers in this deal, and there's only one or two spots available."

Nose tackle Trey Lewis and offensive tackle Todd Weiner, starters who had major knee operations, have not been medically cleared. Coach Mike Smith said Weiner is making headway and he might be able to begin some light running in the next few weeks.

Brooking back outside

Five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Keith Brooking has been moved to his natural weakside spot after spending most of the past three seasons playing middle linebacker out of necessity. Second-round draft choice Curtis Lofton is at middle linebacker, along with second-year Georgia product Tony Taylor.

Brooking has been candid about his preference to play in space as an outside linebacker but the switch might not be permanent.

"We've said from the very beginning that we're going to cross-train all of our guys," Smith said. "Curtis can play outside linebacker, too. Keith's natural position and the position he's probably had the most success in the league has been at 'Will' linebacker."
