Five Falcons to watch at minicamp

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/10/08

The second Falcons minicamp of the Mike Smith era begins Saturday at Flowery Branch and continues through Monday. Unlike the April minicamp, this one is mandatory, and on hand this time will be the 11 players the Falcons drafted last month and nine players brought in after the draft.

Coming off a 4-12 season and looking at a retooled roster, the Falcons will have numerous personnel decisions to make between now and the beginning of the regular season. With that in mind, here are Falcons beat writer Steve Wyche's five players to watch at the minicamp:

Matt Ryan

What's the timetable for Ryan, the quarterback of the future, to be anointed the starter? He could start, or the coaching staff could make him earn his way up the depth chart. The offense is new, and veterans Chris Redman, Joey Harrington and D.J. Shockley don't have a big head start.

Chevis Jackson

Jackson, a cornerback from LSU, was drafted in the third round, and there are expectations for him to be on the field. He could line up at nickel back or take snaps at either cornerback spot. He was mainly a right corner in college, but he might be skilled enough to move to the left side.

Michael Boley

It's early in the case of the Falcons' starting strongside linebacker, but Boley's arrest on domestic battery charges involving his wife Saturday has cast a cloud on him and the team. The new regime must deal with the controversy that could place yet another blemish on the franchise.

Justin Blalock

During minicamp in April, Blalock lined up at right tackle, after starting 14 games last season at left guard. Tyson Clabo started at right tackle after Todd Weiner went down with a knee injury. Weiner's status for this season remains in doubt, meaning Clabo could end up regaining the starting job at right tackle. Blalock would then return to left guard. The shuffling along the offensive line is expected to continue.

Harry Douglas

The selection of Douglas, a 5-foot-11, 176-pound wide receiver from Louisville, could signal a move to a smaller Wes Welker-type slot receiver in offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey's scheme. Where does this leave Joe Horn or last year's slot receiver Michael Jenkins?
