Denver — Braves reliever Rafael Soriano was considered for a replacement spot on the National League All-Star roster, but lost out to Milwaukee closer Trevor Hoffman.
Hoffman was selected to replace injured Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton, and Pirates starter Zach Duke was picked to replace injured Giants starter Matt Cain.
Hoffman had a 1-1 record and 2.05 ERA with 20 saves in 22 opportunities in his first season with the Brewers, after recording his 574th career save on Saturday to extend his major league record.
Soriano is 1-1 with a 1.48 ERA and has converted 12 of 13 saves, after starting the season in a setup role. Before Sunday, he ranked third among NL relievers in ERA (1.48), and second to Broxton in strikeouts (58 in 42-2/3 innings) and hits per nine innings (4.85).
Soriano led all major leaguers with a .068 opponents’ average (4-for-59) with runners on base.
