Braves' 2005 rookies: Where are they now?

Among the most improbable of the Braves' 14 consecutive division titles was the 2005 season. A payroll purge resulted in Atlanta having to rely on a bevy of rookies that season, but Atlanta won the NL East anyway with a record of 90-72. The successful infusion of youthful talent gave Braves' fans hopes of extending the team's dominance in future years. So far, it hasn't happened.

Here's a quick look at where those players are today:

Wilson Betemit: In 2005 he played in 115 games, primarily at third base for the injured Chipper Jones. He was traded to the Dodgers in 2006, and L.A. sent him to the Yankees late last season. He's batting .258 as a utility player for New York.

Blaine Boyer: The hard-throwing set-up pitcher debuted with an impressive 3.11 ERA in 43 games in 2005. He's made 45 appearances with the Braves in '08, gong 2-5 with a 4.27 ERA.

Roman Colon: He looked to be a promising set-up specialist in 2005. But he's spent the past three seasons in the minors, currently with the Royals' AAA team.

Kyle Davies: Who could forget his debut, a victory over the Red Sox at Fenway? Alas, injuries appeared to set the Stockbridge native back and the Braves traded him to the Royals in 2007. He's 3-1 with a 4.71 ERA in seven starts for Kansas City this year.

Joey Devine: He was the team's No. 1 draft pick in 2005, but bullpen problems forced Atlanta to rush him to the majors that same summer. After making little progress in 2006-07, the Braves traded him to the A's, where his career has been resurrected. He's 3-0 in 18 appearances with a 1.23 ERA.

Jeff Francoeur: His promising start has been sidetracked by stalled progress at the plate. The Braves sent him to AA Mississippi on July 4, but recalled him on Monday.

Kelly Johnson: Played in 87 games as the team's left fielder. The Braves sent him to the minors to learn second base in 2006, and he's been Atlanta's starting second baseman the past two seasons.

Ryan Langerhans: Appearing in 128 games, the outfielder hit .267 in 2005. His struggles at the plate led Atlanta to trade him to Oakland in 2006. He now plays for the Nationals, having been recently promoted from the minors. As a backup outfielder, he's hitting .200.

Andy Marte: He was going to be the Braves' third baseman of the future, the guy who was going to replace Chipper Jones. But Atlanta traded him as part of the Edgar Renteria deal, and he ended up in Cleveland. He's now a reserve for the Indians, appearing in 23 games and hitting a meek .127.

Macay McBride: Another local product who made the big league roster, this left-handed reliever from Augusta had trouble with his control. The Braves traded him to Detroit during the 2007 season. In 2008, he pitched one inning for the Tigers' AAA affiliate before a ligament tear ended his season.

Brian McCann: The best of the bunch to date. Known primarily for his defensive skills in the minors, the Duluth has proven to be an offensive force too. The Braves were so impressed that they traded starting catcher Johnny Estrada prior to the 2006 season. McCann is almost sure to be named to the All-Star team for the third consecutive year.

Pete Orr: The consummate utility man, Orr was let go by the Braves following last season. The Nationals picked him up to play the same role, and he's bounced between the Nats and their AAA affiliate. He was sent back down just this week.

Brayan Pena: Never was able to stick long in Atlanta as a No. 2 catcher, Pena was released this spring. He was picked up by the Royals and currently plays for their AAA affiliate.
