Braves win sixth game in a row

It might have been the last place the Braves thought to look for their first one-run win of the season — the rubble of a game where the Turner Field mojo had given way to what looked like a plague on their house.

Both Jo-Jo Reyes and Buddy Carlyle had to leave the game with injuries, and they were the reinforcements.

Mark Teixeira drove in the first run for the Braves in the first. Matt Diaz hit a bases-loaded single to drive in the winning run and the Braves beat the San Diego Padres 5-4, the team's first one-run win of the season.

But five Braves relievers allowed only one run in the last 4 1/3 innings and set up the Braves for their first ninth-inning heroics of the season. Matt Diaz hit a walk-off single to left field with the bases loaded to bring the Braves a 5-4 victory over the Padres.

The Braves are now 1-9 in one-run games. They are also a major-league leading 14-4 at home.

"Amen," said Chipper Jones, who fueled the rally with a single in the ninth. "Alleluia. I'm so happy."

The Braves completed a perfect homestand — 6-0, their first two-series sweep at home in five years — in an imperfect effort. The ninth-inning run was the first earned run the Braves had scored all day. They used a Calix Crabbe error to start two-run rally in the sixth and a Khalil Greene error to set up the game-tying run in the seventh, which they scored on a wild pitch.

"We didn't deserve to win today, but we took advantage of some of their mistakes late," Jones said. "But you're going to have teams try to give you wins every once in a while. You've got to take them."

Yunel Escobar had three infield hits and scored three runs, including the tying and winning runs. He dropped down his first bunt single this season to lead off the ninth against left-hander Joe Thatcher.

Escobar and Jones, who followed with a single, moved into scoring position on Mark Teixeira's groundout, and with first base open, Thatcher walked Jeff Francoeur to set up the potential double play with one out in the inning. It also brought Diaz to the plate with his .452 average against left-handers. Facing a 2-2 count, Diaz turned an inside fastball into the Braves first walk-off hit of the year.

"[Thatcher] does an excellent job of coming in on righties and getting groundballs," Diaz said. "He was looking at me as probably the perfect batter to face in that situation, for a double play. I just had to make sure I caught the bottom half of the ball and tried to get one into the outfield some way. Once I got two strikes, it became battle, put one in play and see what happens."

The Braves had been staring at a 4-1 deficit in the sixth inning and an 0-10 record in games in which they had trailed after six innings. But Greg Norton hasn't been around to know about all that.

The newcomer came through for the second consecutive game with an RBI pinch hit, this time on a two-run single to left field.

"I took a lot of pride in my pinch hitting in Colorado and last year in Tampa," Norton said. "By no means is it easy, it's just worked out so far."

In keeping with the way the day turned out, neither pitching injury turned out to be serious. Carlyle has a muscle strain in the left side of his neck and thinks he could pitch in the next few days. Reyes doesn't think he'll miss a start.

Reyes had left in the third inning with the makings of a blister on his index finger, having allowed two runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings. Two innings later, Carlyle left after colliding with Kevin Kouzmanoff on a play down the first baseline.

"He got me in the side of the head with his thigh, luckily it wasn't his knee," Carlyle said. "It jerked my head to the side a little bit, but I don't think it's anything bad."
