Griffey picks Braves: Is it a good move for the team?

Ken Griffey Jr. has chosen to sign with the Braves, according to a person close to the veteran star and familiar with the on-going negotiations. Braves general manager Frank Wren and Griffey’s agent were scheduled to meet today in an effort to finalize a deal. For his career, Griffey has 611 home runs, 1,772 RBIs and won 10 Gold Gloves as a center fielder in the 1990s.

If Griffey signs, where should he play? And are you Team Griffey when it comes to bringing him to Atlanta?

Signing Griffey was a great move! Now, what # will he be. #3 is retired, #30 belongs to Jeff Bennett, and #24 is Josh Anderson. Maybe a new watch or a big screen tv for Anderson could do the trick?

Similar to me following my boyhood idol, Johnny Bench, I will now watch the Braves regularly for the first time in years. I will be looking in on all his at-bats just to see him take someone deep.

A good pickup by the Braves and not a lot of investment when considering what he has made the past few years.

The Braves may not win 5 more games, but there is interest again in the product on the field.

Griffey has been a great player in the past but all the braves are really doing is bringing in a marquis name who has great career stats. He is often injured and I just believe he is past his prime. Hope it works out well for the bravos.

It’s a great move in a few ways. First, Junior is one of the best of his time. He can play all facets of the game. Second, he can teach. These young players will learn so much from him. Third, he is willing to play within the budget. He will be worth more than his base salary. I hope he earns his incentive money. Fourth, he will sell a lot of tickets, and it makes for an exciting start for spring training. Sign Tommy G. and lets play ball!

Great move, all around. Griffey still has 30+ HR potential, and is made for Turner Field’s dimensions. Plus, he’ll have Diaz every once in a while to spell him. Also, he’ll put more butts in the seats, and more media. not to mention potentially help our beloved Bravos return to the playoffs.

In the long run I still think the Braves are better off cleaning house and loading up the farm system, because I don’t think they are World Series contenders even with the additions they have made. That said, since they have committed to rebuilding through free agency this offseason, I’m glad they got a future Hall of Famer like Griffey who is worth the price of admission even if he’s half the player he was at his peak. I just hope he can stay healthy long enough to be a contributor.

I think this is a good sign if indeed he does sign….I can’t get too excited about it yet remembering the many deals that have fallen thru this off season…When I see KGJr. at a press conference with an A on his cap then I’ll be satisfied…It used to be worth the ticket price to watch this guy take bp….

it’s not 1997. But it’s very nice to have him here. Left field feels more competitive. With the moves they’ve made this team THIS year is still future intact and they can still compete for the Wild Card this year. Wren has done a good job of constructing the team this year minus the Smoltz debacle which probably caught him off guard.

Awesome deal! Even though Griffey isn’t the player he was a decade ago, he’s still a great outfielder and a good run producer. Two things that the Braves need at any rate. But most importantly, he’s great veteran leadership to a team that lost some in Smoltz this past offseason.

And also, some may hate it, but it’s true. It’s great business. Griffey will certainly sell both seats and shirts. The investment in a big name like his will pay off big time.

Great move by the Braves to not only bring in Griffey but also to get Glavine. Although they may not be the same player they were a few years ago, along with Chipper Jones their leadership is something that is sorely needed for the younger players.

Also, let’s face it, he’ll put butts in seats. Based on the reactions of the other posters, I believe he’ll add a general excitement this team hasn’t generated I would say since the heyday of Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine.

Anyone who doesn’t like this move is not a Braves fan. What can we possibly lose by getting a first-ballot Hall Of Famer for $2Million? The combination of Diaz and Griffey in left (assuming relatively good health) will be awesome. Griffey vs. righties and Diaz vs. lefties. We’re looking at a combined .300 average with 30 homers and 100 rbi. Isn’t that what we wanted to pick up? Now we just have it from 2 players, not to mention one that will bring fans to the stadium and respect in the clubhouse. Great move!!!!!!!!!!

Great move. Its not 1997 but don’t be surprised if he stays healthy and hits 25-30 homers, last year he played on a bad knee and had 18, 2007 he was healthy and hit 30. Grew up in the northwest and am so excited I will be able to watch him on a regular basis although a little sad Seattle will miss out cause he really wanted to go back (but didnt want to DH) until tempted by a winning situation and being close to family. Come playoffs, if they get there, I’d take Griffey in any condition as he is clutch. Everyone seems to forget that he played hurt last year and is saying he is done based upon that.

Great move. He will fit perfectly into Bobby’s platoon if he can stay healthy. He hits our division well and he’s a solid guy in the clubhouse. He won’t part the Red Sea but he adds all positives to the team. I just wish the Hawks had a solid veteran leader on the bench like Griffey.

I’m expecting 15 HR, 60 RBIs out of Griffey, and 11-37 with Matt Diaz. So taht would be 26-97 out of left field.

Great move for both the lineup and PR. The team wants him, management wants him, and it sounds like Griffey himself wants to be a Brave. A terrific fit!

Excellent.

This sets us up pretty good with Anderson, KJ, Junior, Chipper, BigMac, and Kothchman. They should be able to devastate right-handers.

Now if Frenchy regains his form maybe we can compete with the Cole Hamels, Johann Santanas, Oliver Perezes, and Jamie Moyers in the division.

Great move. The platoon will limit his playing time and reduce the wear and tear on his body. When he’s not starting, it will give us an amazing pinch hitter against righties to have on the bench. Now Diaz can concentrate on what he does best: hitting lefties, and not worry about hitting for power or anything like that.

By biff pocoroba

February 17, 2009 1:16 PM | Link to this

Let’s give Griffey his due as player who is headed to the Hall of Fame. He’s had a great career. But let’s not get overly excited here and start printing playoff tickets. Keeping him off the DL will be a real challenge. His 39-year-old body just doesn’t perform the way it once did. And 30 HRs? Ridiculous expectation! He can’t play everyday. You’re talking a LF platoon. You think he will get 500 at-bats to produce that kind of power number? His real value will be in protecting Chipper in the lineup, and in working with the youngsters. His addition hardly equates to 5-8 more victories. That’s just not realistic. Let’s enjoy watching one of baseball’s all-time greats as his career winds down, let’s be honest about what he will provide.

I used to live in the Seattle area from 95-06. I saw Junior many times live and bunch on TV. I was there in the Kingdome the night he hit three dingers in a game. I still have the program. I was at the game when he came around and scored the winning run in the play off game. But, this is not that Junior. Back then, he was as good as there was in the game. Had he stayed healthy, he could have hit over 700 homeruns easy. He was quick as a cat, run like the wind, hit with monster power, a cannon for an arm, defense as good as Willie Mays. He is a true hall of fame type player. This Junior is very overweight, broken down, and a part time player. A big name, with little up side. He will probably hit about .250, 12-18 homeruns and 45-60 RBI possible IF HE STAYS HEALTHY. No longer is he the .325, 45, 120 type player. But, with the luck the Braves have been having, with management going cheep, he will be a fan draw. He hasn’t lost the smile.

I remember when the Braves signed Griffey Sr. He was a very good clutch hitter and veteran presence in the line up. Griffey Jr should be even better than his father because he has so much more power. Dude, if this was 1992 and Griffey was signed, and you were still only marginally excited; I’d say it takes a lot for you to get behind someone. BAD MOVE

Griffey is not the guy he used to be and all you have to do is look at his BA the last couple of years. What has been a good winter by Wren has not gone down the drain, but I feel this move was made to appese fans who wanted a big name outfielder. The fact of the matter is Griffey doesn’t put up the numbers anymore he used to. Now we are locked in with another guy who turns 40 this year, is lacking in defense, and doesn’t really give us the bat to hit between Chipper and Mac like I thought we were looking for. We would have been better off sitting on the extra dough and just playing Brandon Jones.

Good move to essentially plug holes until one of the kids in the minors is ready for big league outfield, if — if, mind you — Wren means what he says about starting to develop the farm kids and not use them exclusively as trade bait. If not, it’s a penny-pinching, water-treading move.

Ditto to whoever expressed skepticism about Terry P. as manager. Given the persistent flaws in many Braves’ swings in recent years, why would you want to give Terry still more responsibility?

By Noah

Sorry, I just don’t believe this version of Junior can get it done everyday, and THAT’S what the Braves need, an EVERYDAY corner outfielder with some pop in his bat. Him & Diaz hopefully can combine for 30+ dingers but they still don’t offer enuff protection form B-Mac & Hoss!

As compared to what? Francouer hit a dismal number last year with the bases loaded put Griffey in his spot and he’s able to drive in 2 or more runs 5 of 10 times. Think about it. Francouer came to the plate 40 times with the bases loaded. 20 hits against 40 bases loaded is 60 or more runs driven in. He left 120+ runners on base last year . I love the Griffey move. Get rid of Francouer. Bring up Brandon Jones in his spot.

It’s a good signing. In a platoon situation w/Diaz he will get in to about 120+ games against right handers and if he duplicates his BA and OBP of .273 and .390 respectively against right handers in the 4,5, or 6 hole it should be a nice finish to his career and a cheap boost to Atlanta’s season. It’ will give the young outfielder’s another half/whole season at AAA to hone their skills. Good job Mr. Wren - no matter what everyone else says!

Nice, this guy was my player growing up and I’m 28 now. The Braves will make 2 mil back easily with increased attendance, trust me. And if JR. has himself a comeback along the way offensively it’s gravy on top. I think you will see players and fans being fired up a la Fred McGriff in the mid 90’s!!

This is great news for Braves fans! I see no downside to this roster move at all. We get a future HOF, another big bat in the lineup, a mentor for the young players and a BIG draw to fill seats at Turner Field. Shoot, I just told my wife we will be going to our first Braves games in many years this April! This along with getting Glav back, the trio of new starting pitchers along with some potentially great young talent has got me excited to be a Braves fan again.

A farm system loaded with highly-touted prospects is only valuable if those prospects are someday given the chance to perform at the major league level. The Braves have a habit of using prospects to trade for overage veterans on the downside of their careers. This year is different. The team used most of its trade bait to rent Tex, so they had to go out and sign free agents. Are they going after the next young guns? No…. Griffey, who is a year or two away from retirement and Glavine who should have retired a year or two ago.

I like Griffey, but this team doesn’t thrill me at all. They’ll be lucky to finish over .500.

I am a season ticket holder in Cincy who was absolutely giddy when JR came to Cincy in 2000. That being said, I was happy to see him go last year. JR never really lived up to the expectations of the Reds fans or management. Yes - he is wonderful to watch when he was playing, but he was prone to injury - a fact which I do not think will change. Secondly, and perhaps a bigger issue is the fact that he IS NOT a leader in the clubhouse. JR is a wonderful, classy guy, but he prefers to keep to himself and seldom seeks the role of leader - its just not his style.

I wish him the best in Atlanta and I’m certain the Atlanta faithful - some of the best baseball fans in the country - will enjoy watching him this year. Just understand that this is a PR move by the Braves’ front office and nothing more.

This is a ridiculous move. We should have used the money to sign a left fielder and Ohman. It’s just like the Braves to sign two has beens for less money. In my opinion the Braves were signing a left fielder from having a real chance to win the division, but they now remind us that the biggest work in the Braves vocabulary is “IF”. If Glavine can return to form, If Griffey can play 130 games, If Chipper can stay healthy. Blah, Blah, Blah same ole same ole.

Okay, Griffey was a great player in the 90’s. That was ten years ago. I hope I am wrong, believe me I do. But, why do you all believe that a 39 year old who has hit around 250 the last two years combined and has around 30 dingers in the same time frame will suddenly propel us to the playoffs?
We have at least three who would be more productive in left than ‘the kid’. Great guy, but we can’t afford to pay for another great guy, that’s what we have Glav for. We need a 140-150 game player who can turn on a fastball.

I like it and welcome aboard Griff. We know he is not the player he once was but could be fabulous in a platoon with Matt Diaz. Excellent, exciting move. I like what Bobby has to play with. Similar to 1991, low expectations, but sneaky good. Junior, while much more esteemed in his accomplishments, fills the role of Sid Bream in ‘91. I like our chances. Excited!

Junior may not be the player he once was, but I’ll pay good money to go down and see him, just to say I did. You don’t get to see 600 homers every day. So as a marketing decision, it’s a winner.

I believe this is a win win for the Bravos. Griffey was one of few if not the only big star I’ve heard of who signed for less when he was at the top. He went to Cincy for about 1/2 of his worth. Matt Diaz was fantastic before he got hit. 4 the money, we get Glavine, Diaz and no less then the eternal kid. Goooood go Bravos!

Glavine and Griffy, more over the hill players and a manager to go with them. When will the Braves learn? More fans in the seats? With this economy and maybe, if they are lucky, an average team, want happen. Until the Braves grow their talent from within and combine this with the right manager, they will be stuck in the past.

I have been a Braves fan in New York since 1994 and I am happy with this move. The Braves have a lot of talent in their farm system and I think Griffey can give them some leadership they need to be successful. He has the most beautiful swing ever in baseball and if he is healthy he could surpirse some people with the numbers he can put up in Turner Field. Welcome To the Braves family Griffey. I will be buying your jersey! The greatest player I was able to see play! Take that AROD

He’s a legend…and there is no doubt that ANY man is past his prime at 39. But the braintrust that was had a knack for squeezing a year or two from older players. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. Let’s hope that this is one of the times it does. I am excited about a platoon of Griffey and Diaz in Left; I, personally, think Diaz is a stud and add Griff’ to the mix, it could be very interesting. Go Baves!

I keep seeing the same themes in all these posts. Please, Braves fans, a little dose of reality:

1) Many here have said Griffey will be a great addition “if he stays healthy”. I hate to tell you, he won’t

2) Several posts talk about him being a leader. He’s a great guy - but not a leader in the clubhouse.

3) The deal’s not done yet.

Good move! Wren has rebuilt the team and traded only one highly rated minor league catching prospect in doing so. Now we need a centerfielder to step up a become a leadoff threat, smooth some rough edges on a lefty in the bullpen and PLAY BALL! with a winning attitue!

By submariner

If he hits 20HR and drives in 70+ runs, it’s a great deal. His health is a concern, but so is Chipper’s. He comes on the cheap and gives us a front line gap filler until Schafer is ready. Good move. Bobby like veterans, so his presence along with Chipper and Glavine will add that leadership and take pressure off of Frenchy, B Mac and Escobar to carry the load.

I grew up in Georgia rooting for the Braves. I have lived in Cincinnati for the last two baseball seasons and have seen Ken Griffey Jr. play baseball in person a couple of dozen times during this period.

Unless this guy has had both a knee transplant and a personality transplant during the off-season, this signing is nothing to get excited about. Griffey cannot field his position any more, and he will not run out a ground ball.

By Gandalf, the White!

Maybe we are a tad bit premature - but the minute Junior arrives in camp (assuming he does) introduce him to Jason Heyward, give them adjacent lockers and tell Jason this is an opportunity of a life-time.

I’ve gone to the Great American Ball Park many, many times just to watch Junior in person. As a lifelong Braves fan - it will be a pleasure to see him in a Braves uniform.

By Zach

The Braves aren’t looking for a long term, expensive left fielder. They were looking for a few extra homeruns from their outfield. Griffey’s stats were good last year against righties… and Matt Diaz is fantastic against lefties. Good move. Left field solved.

Its some extra homeruns in the outfield until Heyward and Schafer and co. are ready.

If you look at it for what it is, its a good move.

By Dale in Atlanta

Great move. Now lets hope he can stay healthy for at least 100 games. If Francouer can rebound to true form, with Chipper and Jr. the Braves are looking at a very strong 3, 4, 5 spot in there line-up.

By Zach

Though I’m not going to get excited until he shows up in camp, like Chipper said.

By Paul Hamilton

February 17, 2009 2:46 PM | Link to this

I really don’t see the downside on this one. Griffey platoons with Diaz, which should help him stay strong and allow him some rest during the season. He has been solid against right handers, much better than anyone we could have plugged into that role. It’s a small one year contract, plus the fans will love it. I wouldn’t have gone to a braves game regardless of what kind of a team they put together, but I will definitely go watch a game just to see Griffey play one more time.

What is there to lose in this deal??? If he gets hurt or just stinks, they have the option to let him go and plug in one of the young guys or look for another bat at the trade deadline. This is a low risk, potentially high reward, especially if the rumors are true that griffey lost some weight to help reduce the stress on his body.

Brad Wesley’s comments - you are right on the mark. I sat at Red’s games last year and longed for them to trade Jr. As I’ve said, Griffey is alot of things, but a real asset to any ballclub now? No way. If anything he belongs in the AL as a DH.

By Joe

February 17, 2009 2:53 PM | Link to this

Logically you put Griffey in Left Field with Diaz. He can platoon in CF if things don’t go according to plan. But with his bad knees you have to keep the wear to a minimum. Good sign I think. He will probably give us 20-25 homers in limited play. He still has a wonderful swing and the desire to play. It is possible, though not likely, Griffey could surpass our homerun production from the outfield last year all on his own.

By NB-C

February 17, 2009 2:53 PM | Link to this

Good God. I barely survived through the non-signing of Hampton and the non-signing of Andruw and now I have to deal with this?

I’ve watched Griffey in Cincy for the last several years and I can honestly say that this is a bad, bad move on the Braves part. Word around the Queen City was that Junior was a prima donna who liked to lounge around the locker room in a big leather recliner. The Reds had TERRIBLE chemistry and terrible teams while saddled with his salary plus he was ALWAYS HURT.

I’m glad to see the Braves aren’t paying a lot for him….I just hope he doesn’t rub off on the younger guys like he did Adam Dunn.

Not a good move—-signing an over the hill, aging player for big money, just because of his name—-I’ve seen the braves do this a bunch of times without results. They could have spent those millions in a much better way on younger talent. Oh well, another wasted season coming up, with no playoffs.

I find it ironic that you mention that he may play with Glavine, who also played with Griffey’s father, yet you don’t mention that Griffey played WITH his father with the Mariners!

I know, more ‘local aspect’ there, but merely playing with someone his father played with is a little less impressive.

By Coyote

February 17, 2009 3:07 PM | Link to this

I like the move. I don’t think we should expect too much from this but I just don’t see any downside. The Braves didn’t over-pay for him, didn’t commit to a long-term deal that would block the opportunities for our young developing minor league stars, and didn’t give up top prospects to get him. Meanwhile, a Griffey/Diaz combo in left field could make that position more productive than it’s been in awhile as Cox plays the pitching matchups. In fact, playing about 100-110 games might be perfect for a guy like Griffey. It will keep him active, yet healthy and rested.

Plus, it makes the team more interesting and likeable and Griffey should be a good role model for the younger players on the roster.

I don’t think it dramatically changes the Braves’ outlook for the season. The Phillies and Mets both have as much or more talent and depth than Atlanta. But it’s definitely a positive move and can only make them better so I’m all for it.

This is the greatest move Wren has made since he decided to part his hair down the left. I’m wearing my Braves underoos while I type this. I’m just that excited. As soon as I hit the “Post” button I am going to call the Braves and buy season tickets.
