Will Tebow be a good NFL QB? Gruden thinks so.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A lot of NFL experts doubt whether Tim Tebow can make the transition to the NFL as a quarterback.
Former Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden isn’t one of them.
Gruden told the Orlando Sentinel that not only will Tebow succeed in the NFL, but the Florida quarterback also could “revolutionize the game.”
In a Q&A with the Sentinel’s Chris Harry, Gruden said Tebow could take the “wildcat” formation—a direct snap to a running back—to an entire different level.
“Most of the teams that have the wildcat back there, it’s Ronnie Brown, it’s Jerious Norwood, it’s whoever you want to say it is,” Gruden said. “This guy here is 250 pounds of concrete cyanide, man. And he can throw. He throws well enough at any level to play quarterback.
“He can play quarterback in the NFL. What he said after the Ole Miss game, I said, ‘That’s my favorite football player I’ve ever seen in my whole life.’ I said, ‘I want Florida to win every game that kid plays from now on.’”
Sounds like someone other than FOX broadcaster Tom Brennaman has a man crush on Tebow.
Do you believe Tebow will be a good NFL quarterback or would he better suited changing positions?

First?
Tim Tebow will not “revolutionize” the sport. I would be glad for my daughter to marry a young man like him and also loathe him as a dog fan, but as soon as he lines up against 300 lb guys with 4.4 speed and Safeties who are his size and hit hard, he will be reduced to a glorified fullback with a decent arm.
I would bet he wins the nobel peace prize before he wins the NFL MVP.

A QB is too valuable to be a wildcat runner. No matter who you are,no matter what size you are, you will get hurt running the football in the NFL if you are a QB. He might last 2 seasons being a running QB. He doesn’t have Vick’s speed or elusive moves. He can run the sneak but to run in open space as a QB is a recipe for an injury!

Where are these 300 lb. guys who run a 4.4 that you speak of? If these kind of people exist, I think we may need to switch the steroid witch hunt from baseball to the NFL.

And where are these Tebow-sized safeties that he’s going to have to elude? If you think there’s a single safety in the NFL who’s 6’3, 250, you’re nuts. Ed Reed is 5’11, 200, and nobody hits harder. He’d bounce off Tebow.

He could “revolutionize the game.”
Didn’t we hear this same claptrap about Michael Vick? The Wildcat was fun, but pro defenses will be ready for it next season, and we’ll be back to fundamentals winning games again.
One fundamental? Running QBs don’t win in the NFL… at least not for long. Tebow will make an opening splash, have a few 350 lb. linemen run into him, break a leg or two, lose a step and settle into mediocrity.

Tebow doesn’t do anything better than Michael Vick other than break tackles. Vick is faster, more agile, has a better arm, and is just as accurate given time in the pocket. I think Tebow can be a solid NFL player in the right system, but no player is going to “revolutionize” the NFL. It is going to take a coach with a new, innovative philosophy, like Bill Walsh with the West Coast offense or Buddy Ryan with the 46 defense, to “revolutionize” the game.
And no quarterback will ever be an efficient passer running the Wildcat formation or any other formation that emphasizes scripted quarterback movement. Scripted quarterback movement is what killed Michael Vick’s development. The best mobile quarterbacks — Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Donovan McNabb — are the ones who played in conventional schemes that called for them to stay in the pocket, and who only picked up rushing yards when improvising. If Tebow is going to be successful in the NFL as a quarterback, it’s going to have to be in a traditional passing offense.

What I think is that Tebow will gather momentum next year. It only takes one “expert” on air to talk about his improved pocket pressence (real or imagined) for others to jump on that bandwagon (site unseen) because that is simply how hype builds in these situations. It happens for a variety of reasons. Partially due to laziness on the part of other analyst and perhaps due to bias in that you will/deceive yourself into seeing improvement. One thing I am fairly certain of is that there are enough Tebow supporters that you can count on this happening.
By the way, for full disclosure, I am as big a Gator hater as there is but I recognize talent and before he’s done he might very well be one of the top 3 collegiate players ever. Not sure if that will translates into NFL success but he’s a good kid and with his determination, he might make himself into a winner at that level too.

Gruden oversstates considerably. Although Tebow will cause defenses headaches. He can pass, Vick could not. Yet his running has to be respected. He should be successful in the NFL.

If Tebow was a ready for prime time NFL player, he wouldn’t be coming back for his senior year. That’s the bottom line. He would have to be used in a completely different offense for any type of success in the NFL…who has the guts to find out? Someone will…they better hope it works out.

What are all these Dawg fans doing on a Gator blog….don’t you Dawg fans have a newspaper with its own Dawg blog? Don’t you have anything better to do that get on these Gator blogs? Oh, I forgot, only Dawg fans are allowed to visit Ga. Tech and Florida blogs…but Tech fans and Florida fans are not allowed to visit Dawg fans. By the way, Tebow rocks the college world, and he will rock the NFL world as well. Wasn’t Georgia going to put Tebow in his place last year?..didn’t happen. Now, the NFL will put him in his place as well…won’t happen either. After Loeffer spends one year working with Tebow (new QB coach at Florida), Tebow will be a top 5 pick next year. Count on it.

Say what you want about the young fellow but remember guys like Unitas, Montana, Stabler and others who couldn’t throw the ball a mile downfield. They all had superb leadership ability, a willingness to do whatever it took to win, and a great heart committed to their team’s success…just like Tebow. He’s a winner and will be at whatever he chooses to do with his life. As a Dawg fan I’ll just be glad when his days with Urban come to an end.

Don’t any of you remember a guy by the name of Steve Young….a lefthander, a big guy, who had a funny throwing motion that could also RUN the football? Well I do, and he’s now in the Hall of Fame of the NFL. Georgia fans do just love to cast their insults towards this kid while their keg raising non leader at QB that was brought in from Texas and promised the world by Mark Richt has left theim with no loyalty, no leadership and most importantly no championships of any kind. Give me Tebow or better yet, give me whover Urban Meyer chooses when Tebow leaves and I’ll bet you a dollar to a doughnut that the Gators will finish ahead of the Dawgs, the year after Tebow leaves.

Even though I’m a diehard UGA Bulldog, I would much rather have Tebow leading my team than Stafford. Even though Stafford had a magnum throwing arm, he was not able to motivate his whole team and at the end of the day he proved himself to be nothing more than a detached mercenary. UGA consistently underperformed during his tenure. He will not be a notable NFL quarterback. On the other hand, Tebow has literally willed Florida to two national championships and leads by personal example. I’d take him any day. Leadership works at all levels.

Three things UGA fans/bloggers can’t do: 1. Spell. 2. Write complete, coherent sentences. 3. Deal with the success of the UF program, its coaches and its players. You people should try and get a life, a job and a little self-esteem. Tebow envy isn’t pretty.

Tebow has size, strength, heart, and brains. His big weakness is the ducks he throws. He’s so big and strong, he can throw a fluttering lob half a mile. This works for him in college, but DB closing speed in the NFL will routinely pick those passes. I don’t think he’ll “revolutionize” play in the NFL, but I think he’ll play quarterback in the NFL, and play very well. I think he’ll be very hard to sack in the passing game, and will be key to one of the best running packages in the NFL, wherever he ends up playing. I just wish he’d hurry and leave college!

Tim Tebow will make a fantastic nfl player, but his greatness as a quarterback is dependent on being able to run the ball. The college game and the nfl are two totally different animals. He won’t run over people like he does in college; we all know that.
If he is going to make it as a starting quarterback he needs to continue to work hard on his throwing and learning to read defenses. I think he will make it as a receiver or strong safety in the nfl.

Tebow’s true heart and soul appears to be in the missionary field instead of the NFL. He would be one knee surgery away from mediocrity. Grit and rah rah will only get you so far in the NFL. If you’re looking for a NFL quarterback model, it is Matt Ryan. If you’re looking for an excellent Christian role model, it’s Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow understands what is more important.

My thing is this. Im a huge gator fan. I’ve watched this kid from the time he stepped on campus. Everyone knows that the last 10-15 years, Florida has not had a successful QB to put in the league & I still love Rex. This kid Tebow is different. I thought Chris Leak was one of the best QBs to put the blue & orange on, til this season. Leak had Baker & Bubba, Tebow had Percy & Murphy. My point is this, if he goes to a terrible team w/ no promise, he will be mediocre just like any other QB will be if he goes into that situation. If he goes to a team w/ a proven winner that he can learn from (coach or QB) look out. The last thing: If the scouts doubt him @ QB, he WILL NEVER PLAY ANOTHER POSITION!!!!! He has bigger things in life he can accomplish guys, that is the true beauty of his situation. Everyone should acknowledge that!!! Up Next: Jordan Reed, 6-3 225 QB……. Does that sound familiar?? Go Gators!!!!

yeah right. Come on that 250 pound guy will be a sitting duck in a wild cat offense. Can you say Dan Kendra.
Running over people for 5 yards is not a sign of NFL talent.
The game against oklahoma destroyed his draft stock.
He threw two picks that are unacceptable for anyone who envisions a career as a top notch QB in the SEC.
Ask Drew Bledsoe what happens when you try and take on grown men on defense.
John Gruden is dreaming.
The revolution was Mike Vick. ATL vs MINN OT.

Teboe is a refreshing change from what has become the norm of many college players that don’t want a degree (and in the end take a scholarship from someone that does), but just want exposer for their athletic ability to jump to the pros for the big money. We need a minor league football systems so they can start playing immediately and other athletes that want a degree will get a chance!

I can see litle difference between Tebow and Jared Lorenzen who played for Kentucky a few years ago, except that Tebow has much better players around him. Lorenzen hasn’t exactly revolutionized the NFL at this point (if he’s still in the NFL). Rothlisberger also falls into their mode of oversized QBs.

Did we already try this with Michael Vick, Vince Young and the “unstoppable” read option? As those two have shown, guys who are marginal passers, and Tebow is a marginal passer, do not do well in the NFL. Tebow is great with the shuttle passes to the tight end which is where most of his passing yards came from in the NC game. Also, give Gruden’s total destruction of the Tampa offense each season, I don’t know if he’s the guy to be saying anything about good QB play. With the exeption of Rich Gannon in Oakland, Gruden went through more QB’s in a season than Paris Hilton goes through penicillin in a given year.

With all due respect to the recently departed (fired) Chucky Gruden, he has proven not to know flip about quarterbacks as evidenced by his playing muscial QBs during his time in Tampa. He’s always been in love with the next QB but would do nothing but ruin them when he obtained them.
I like Tebow, think he’s great for the college game. But I can’t seem him being an NFL QB, his game just doesn’t translate to that level at that position. Trying to start a straight ahead dive from 5 yards in the backfield would get him killed in the league. I think he may be a decent TE or possible a Fullback.

I’m the original Gator Hater but I wouldn’t bet against this kid. He’s not going to become a more polished passer in UF’s offense this year and will have to learn to take snaps from under center. There have been a lot of spread QBs who can’t make that adjustment. If he goes somewhere with a good QB coach I can see him being a solid pro QB.

I’m a lifelong Tennessee fan, but Tim Tebow is flat-out The Man. He is a rare combination of size, talent, and leadership — one who comes along once in a generation. And he definiely has that “it” factor. And yes, we and every other SEC school are jealous as all-get out of the Gators for getting him. As for Gruden’s comment, I don’t know about the “revolutionize the NFL game” business, but no one can deny that he is doing it in the SEC right now. Congratulations to the Gators for another BCS title.

I am a UGA grad and 25 year season ticket holder and contributor. I despise the Gators with the best of them. But I have to admit, I like this kid, Tebow. Can’t help not to. If I had to coach a pick-up game in college ball, he would be my first choice, yes over Stafford and all the rest. With a great senior year (he’s coming back, not bolting like Stafford, Moreno & Co.), he should go down in college history as one of the all-time great ones.
As to the pros, I’m not doubting the kid. With his heart and work ethic, I truly think he can do anything he puts his mind to. He’s been a pleasure to watch. Still, Go Dawgs!

Utter foolishness. There is a freaking reason why the majority of scouts have him as a 4th or 5th round qb draft choice. Ya think one guy like Gruden knows better than the rest of them.
For one thing Tebow is not lightning fast. He has good but not great speed like Michael Vick. He has decent but not great arm strength like Matt Stafford. His stats and wins are a little overblown because people forget how much more talented his supporting cast is than the supporting cast of his opponents. He looks great running against college boys but against the NFL players he would be body slammed the likes of which he hadn’t seen in college.
Lastly, the pro scouts have noted time and time again how these qbs who play in a simple 1 or 2 quick read spread offense in college fail miserably in the pros, especially at first. Tebow plays a college offense and playing in a pro offense with multiple reads is gonna be just a might bit harder.
My feeling is that he has enough talent to be a average but not great nfl qb. His limitation will always be his average arm strength and unlike the college game his running ability will not help a whole lot because of his average speed. Michael Vick he is not.

I have NO love for the Gators, but I’ll admit Tebow’s the best football player in the NCAA. Those saying he’ll be relegated to just a FB or equate to Lorenzen in the NFL need to put the crackpipe down! Tebow is an incredible athlete that has the talent + potential to be a good NFL QB.
