The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

My pick would be Brian McCann. Then I’d try for Jason Heyward and Phil Niekro. McCann would be my top choice because he is one of the best young players in the game today. Barring serious injury, I believe he will be an All-Star catcher for years to come.

Definitely Phil Niekro! On the autograph note, Quail Unlimited is back in Albany this weekend. I met Ryan Klesko at a QU dinner a couple of years ago and asked that he sign a baseball for my boys (8 and 10 yos). You would have thought I asked for $10,000! I ended up telling him to “…kiss my…” What a jerk! I quit going to the QU dinners because of him.

Amore, did it ever occur to you, how it would feel if you were out minding your own business, trying to relax, and someone shoves a baseball or picture in your face and asks you to sign it. Ebayers have ruined autograph collecting, and kids are the one suffering from it. I’ll guarantee, tomorrow at TF, you’ll see hundreds of grown men (20-40 years old) running all over the place with a bag full of baseballs, and they will be on ebay tomorrow night.

Mike Bell was born on Monday, April 22, 1968, in Lewiston, New York. Bell was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 2, 1990, with the Atlanta Braves.

I agree with Amore…I waited in line for four hours for Klesko’s crappy little signature…he was more than two hours late to the signing and used getting lost as his excuse. How hard is it to find Ga Square Mall in Athens?? Esp. from Atlanta! It barely takes one hour to get to Athens from Atl.

Of those Bravos listed…”Frenchy” & “Knucksy”. It’d be sweet to get an autographed bat from Murph & signed ball from Spahn. The ultimate would be a signed bat from the greatest player in the game’s history…”the Georgia Peach” Ty Cobb! :)

Jason Heyward. He will be the real deal. Brian McCann would be my 2nd choice. Heyward and McCann will be at the same table, so you get them both. Cant beat that. Going to be some long lines for these two guys. I am glad I have alot of them already, especially Mr Heyward. He is a very nice guy and was a signing machine this past year in Rome.

This is a great blog. This subject brings out in the open just the type of silly people who are consistently giving their learned opinions about baseball. Any adult actually showing up at the ballpark to get some ballplayer’s autograph has some serious issues. I suspect a lot of you are like the DiNero part in the movie The Fan.

To CNile @ 3:23, I’d only want to get an autograph from Torre, LaRussa, Alou, & Baker. Maybe Johnny Oates, but Johnson and Gaston are not worth my time. And how come no one has mentioned Dale Murphy, Bruce Benedict, or even Ruth (yeah I know he’s dead but still)? How many remember at Fulton County everytime Benedict would come up to bat the crowd would cheer “Bruuuuuuuce!!” or could have been boos, but whatever. However, I don’t care for the Braves anymore so I’ll continue to support my Cardinals.

CommunistAJC- Let me know when the Cubs become relevant again ok, as I’m sure no one cares about the cubs either. But you should be in good company with all the Braves fans, as both the Braves and cubs are excellent choke artists. Cardinals 2009 NL Central Champs, bank on it.

Ron Mexico, lol! I actually ran into ol’ “Eggs” Benedict in a tavern on Long Island after my wedding rehearsal dinner years ago (when he was the bench coach for the Mets). He’d actually ref’d some of my high school basketball games (he still refs…NCAA D1 now). We chatted about the old Braves games, hoops, etc. He was a cordial fella!

WM. The Cubs have won their division two years in a row while your crap team has been stuck in third place. I hope AMBEV sells the Cards to a no-name city in the west. You guys suck! LaRussa is a drunk. As far as the Braves go, they beat you guys out for 14 straight years home slice. Great were the days when Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz made your sorry team look like minor league players.
By WM
January 23, 2009 7:50 PM | Link to this
CommunistAJC- Yes, your beloved Cubs have won two straight NL Central titles for a grand total of…3 in the current divisional split (2 in the previous divisions). I must say, that figure whoops up on the Cardinals paltry 7 in the current format (3 in the old format). How about pennants? Cubs 16 Cards 17, so fairly even but the Cubs last won one some 64 years ago in ‘45 while the Cards did it ‘06. I bet the Cubs got us in World Series titles. Cubs 2 Cards 10 with the Cubs happening a very long time ago…what 1907? And your right the Braves beat us, but they only have 5 pennants and 1 World Series title to show for it. But like the Cubs, they are and will be choke artists. But please do tell me, how do the Cubs go from having one of the better if not best records in baseball in ‘08 to being swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS? Yeah that’s what I thought. So like I said, when the Cubs become relevant again let me know. And for what its worth Inbev, not Ambev, bought AB and AB sold the Cardinals in ‘95 to William DeWitt. Missed that one to big guy. Later.
