Braves working to bring Sutton back
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Braves have hired Jim Powell for their radio-broadcast team and are working to bring back Don Sutton to be his new partner.
The organization needed a pair of new announcers following the passing of long-time announcer Skip Caray last August and the retirement of Pete Van Wieren following the season. What are your thoughts as the organization has targeted Sutton, who worked 18 seasons as a Braves television broadcaster and is currently under contract with the Washington Nationals, to team with Powell next season?
Let us know what you think.

By all means, yes! My favorite pair back in the day was Pete and Don. I will really miss Pete but having Don back, paired with Powell, would be great. I also enjoy Joe and Boog on the TV side. Chip is okay, but I am not that big of a fan of his.

YES!! We want Sutton back! He would be the perfect addition following the loss of Skip and the retirement of Pete. I could think of no better person for that job than Don Sutton. Hopefully he can get out of his contract in Washington.

Announcers aren’t important; the results on the field are. If announcers were important why would the Braves keep such no talent announcers as Sciambi and Chip?
By Taylor
January 21, 2009 2:12 PM | Link to this
Is it just me, or does it seem like Chip Caray gets no respect? I know he’s got his Peachtree and TBS responsibilities, but you would think the Braves would want him to follow in his dad’s footsteps. Chip is a great, passionate announcer that I think many Braves fans would love to stick around - specifically on radio broadcasts. Chip has the potential to be the “voice of the Braves”, however I don’t see that ever happening.

Not only would I welcome him back, but I think he WANTS to come back. I live in DC, and would catch the Braves on MASN, and every game, he seemed to long to be back calling Atlanta games. It was kind of wierd, I think the play-by-play guy was like WTF a lot…

On the contrary, announcers are very important. Baseball is an old game, and it’s history is more important than in any other sport. Radio announcing is a very big deal.
Bring Sutton back. I always enjoyed him.

WONDERFUL NEWS!!! His departure felt wrong to begin with. Now with the need we have to fill the booth, pairing a long-time voice of the Braves with a GA boy coming home to call for his hometown team just makes TOO much sense not to happen.
Pay Stanley what he wants to let Don out of his contract to come home. We need him back.

I respected SKIP Carey no doubt about it. He was fantastic, opinionated(back when u were allowed to have one),humorous, and most important:OUR GUY!

Sciambi isn’t bad, don will at least give us a taste of the old days… he will be the remenant left from the skip and pete days. He was not my favorite but better than. Chip! Chip is now where close to his father, he is a pretty boy riding his fathers coat tails.

Yes, bring Sutton back. That’s a no-brainer.
These two guys would be a breath of fresh air considering the stale Pete and Skip nonsense we’ve endured in recent years.
And axe that other Caray while management is at it. He gives me the creeps - all happy and corporate sounding. Like he was cut out in the factory of consumer branding sell something announcers.

I thought it was insulting that he ever left in the first place. The guy is better on the radio than Chip Carey is now..
By regular ole fan
January 21, 2009 2:45 PM | Link to this
Chip Carey’s humor is grating and his smart azz remarks are like claws going down a chalkboard. He makes us uncomfortable cause we know we are supposed to give him a pass for his heritage, but he hasn’t earned the respect of the fans enough for us to like him. His comments are ALWAYS slightly askew,or just irritating. And like it or not his criticisms of our team are not very insightful nor helpful to learn about the player/game. He is just not SMOOOOTH. His father could make those wise-azz comments and we were cool with it cause he was our guy. Chip makes the same comments and its like you just want to say shut up smart a$$.
DON come back. Oh yeah get rid of SHAMBLES Shambi as well. VANILLA, VANILLA, and no he doesn’t deserve a cool nickname like “BOOG”. PETE please come back and do HOME GAMES only?
PS: The announcers mean everything to help the game. Try listening to radio broadcast of other teams sometimes of any major sport. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE EXPERIENCE! Great announcers bring the excitement and perspective of gameday to life. IT IS AN ART!

At times I got really tired of hearing him talk so much about his own career and especially about the Dodgers, but he was always nice to people, unlike his coworker Skip. doesn’t matter to me since they moved away from 750 I can’t hear the games. I sure wish they’d go back to a clear channel or get a station in southwest virginia. It would be great if the Braves bring Don Sutton back.Anytime a former player of his stature and his knowledge of the game is in the booth its a big plus. The man won over 300 games in the bigs.He did’nt have an overpowering fastball or a devastating breaking ball but,he won with his gile and his ability to out think the hitters. As a broadcaster i like the the added “I’ve been down there and know whats going on” extra that he adds to his commentary.Don never wanted to leave here when TBS quit the Braves anyway. If he returns it will be great.

I would love to have Sutton back. He is very knowledgable and allows his partners to talk without interrupting and talking over them constantly.
I really like the team of Simpson and Jon ‘Syndrome’ Sciambi over on SportsSouth. I subscribe to the MLB extra innings package because I am a baseball nut, and I can tell most Braves fans that they have been spoiled over the years by the quality of their announcers. There are a few other good ones out there, but nothing on the lines of the Braves announcers. If we can get Sutton back, to go with the other three, I will still be impressed, despite our losses over the last decade in the booth.
Sutton should NEVER have been let go.

Don Sutton has been a tremendous credit to the game as a player, fan and broadcaster. He walks his path with the game with his chin up and his analysis soundly rooted in the history and fundamentals of the game.
After 18 years of loyalty, talent and making up one of the most successful broadcasting teams in the history of televised baseball, Sutton was unceremoniously dumped by the TBS and the Braves.
Maybe some of the lessons of the past three years can be corrected and the Braves and their broadcasters can bring back Sutton, who is truly an asset to the game.

Anyone who would call Sutton one of the “good guys” has never asked the egomaniac for an autograph. He is a self centered a**. He is a decent analyst on pitching, but is HORRIBLE when doing the call of the game. TBS fired him for some reason. What a mistake to bring him back.

Since you asked for comments here goes: It seems to be unpopular to have liked Don Sutton, but I always did. He knows the game and explains stuff that I would never know otherwise although I am a fan of sixty years. As for Chip, I like him too. He’s not Skip but there were reasons to be critical of him as well, but as you say, he was ours and everyone needs the room to be themselves. Chip will be fine and I think that we are being a little disrespectful to not give the guy a thumbs up when he is trying so hard. Take him to another team and they would think he was wonderful. It’s easy to be down on someone and lose him before you realized your loss. Joe is also just fine with me. I hate to be critical of anyone but those are my favorites now that Skip and Pete are gone.

Don Sutton is a fantastic color guy because of his experience and knowledge of the game, especially pitching and all the nuances of it. He is not, however, a great play-by-play broadcaster. During the 14-year run of division championships, his game calling was by far the weakest of the four announcers. Having said that, it would be nice to have an old familiar voice back in the booth to carry on some sort of link to the glory days.
He’ll make a nice complement to Bob Uecker….I mean Jim Powell. Damned if I can tell those two voices apart. He’s a virtual clone in terms of his cadence and vocal timbre to good ol’ Uke. But a good announcer all the same…..they’ll make a good team.

For those who can’t get the Braves on radio anymore , I recommend getting an XM satellite radio . It only costs $12.95 a month and you get every game for every team .
The only drawback is you only get the home team broadcast . So when the Braves are on the road , you get the other teams announcers . But it is interesting to hear what other announcers sound like and find out what they think about Braves players .

Don Sutton has always been a class act. The ad he took out in the AJC thanking the fans after being fired by Turner Sports was a perfect response. Giving up the synergy of TBS and the Braves was a mistake that will never be acknowledged as such. So it goes with corporate boobs just trying to increase their bonus.

It would be great for Don to come back, but if I was him I would stay with the Nationals. The Braves are searching for someone to help them with their ratings as it is apparent the team on the field is not playing up to expectations. TBS made a mistake letting Don go and now everyone wants to make-up for their mistake.
I would also release Jon Sciambi as I have found him to be very boring on TV. In fact I have turned the sound off a few times when he is suppossedly giving the play by play. We need people who will wake up the listeners and have some vocal support for the team. Just going through the motions and being a monotone is something not needed. a ras

I can’t believe so many like Sutton. If you like hearing arrogant ramblings on how ball players of today don’t know what they’re doing then by all means bring him back. How many pennants have the Braves won? Are you telling me there isn’t one good announcer from the pool of ex-Braves players? Lemke is sooo much better. Can we have some announcers who don’t just grouse and complain all the time. Simpson and Sutton were like the two old muppet guys in the balcony.

Why? Sutton is awful behind the mike. He allows the game to get in the way of his stories about his playing days. He’s a Dodger. The Braves have a rivalary with the Dodgers. He doesn’t deserve to be a Brave. Why not Lemke. A true Brave. A good voice with knowledge of the game. Don Sutton was and is the best baseball announcer i’ve ever heard. I never thought he was arrogant, he explained situations and what the players might be thinking (as he is paid to do) and made watching our braves very enjoyable.
All of the fans here who are critical of him should remember some of the duds we’ve had like Bob Rathbun, Darrell Chaney, and John Sterling.
The best IMO are: Don Sutton, Ernie Johnson Sr. (close 2nd), Pete, Joe, then Skip.

YES! Bring back Don Sutton. He is a versatile and knowledgeable announcer. When he was paired with Pete, it was like hearing a baseball clinic every night. When Don was paired with Skip, it was “fun at the ole ballpark”. Chip has one of the best “radio voices” in broadcasting and understands the nuances of calling games on radio. I wish he did more radio.
Also, having Don Sutton is like having another pitching coach. Spending some time on those plane trips and bus rides picking Don’s brain is a tremendous resource for the pitching staff and coach.
Go Braves!
