Falcons Fusspot: Ryan vs. Flacco - Who’s the best NFL rookie QB?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Which NFL rookie quarterback rules the pool — our own NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Atlanta’s Matt Ryan, or the Baltimore Ravens’ Joe Flacco, whose team takes the field Sunday against Pittsburgh for the AFC title and a shot at the Super Bowl?
Fusspot Fun Fact: Both guys have lame nicknames each team can use while dissing the other’s guy - “Matty Ice” (good luck, Team Ryan) and “Joe Cool” (what’s up with that, Team Flacco?).
Stir The Pot: You’ve fussed about it in the Falcons Vent. Now let’s stoke the fire and stir the Falcons Fusspot on the Best NFL Rookie QB question. And be sure to throw down for YOUR team — say if you’re Team Ryan or Team Flacco.
Team Ryan… Team Flacco… DOWN! SET! FUSS!

Joe Flacco wasn’t asked to do a lot other than not to blow the game for the Ravens Defense. He’s better than Trent Dilfer, but he didn’t have to be.
Ryan had a lot more on his shoulders for sure.

Team Ryan Ryan is the best rookie qb by far, no question about it…he had to do more for his team than flacco has had to do…the falcons had a good defense this year but the raven defense is a better defense so flacco didnt have to do a whole lot but lean on the defense. ryan had to take the team on his shoulders and carry them most of the season.

Look at what Matt Ryan has done for the city of Atlanta and the Falcons. He came into a situation that had disaster written all over it! He had a running back, though a lot of hype, that was unproven; and he was in the shadow of Michael Vick. The defense was questionable after their performance last year. Flacco came into a situation with an average football team with a stellar defense. The Ravens organization looked like the Patriots in this decade compared to what the Falcons looked like. To me, this is a no-brainer. While Flacco is good, what Ryan has done is remarkable for a rookie QB! Team Ryan all the way!

Like I said: Matt Ryan is not the next Peyton Manning. HE IS THE NEXT MATT RYAN WHO IS GOING TO BE BETTER THAN MANNING.
Flacco does not even come close to Ryan.
Flacco Defense is making him look good. Switch Flacco with Ryan on Baltimore Team and the Ravens would be undefeated!

Not even a contest…Flacco is only completing 44% of his passes in the playoffs. Only thing he’s done right is not throw the int’s. The Ravens defense is clearly the core of this team. When the Falcons are able to provide Matt the same type of def that constantly keeps the ball in his hands…we’re not even having this conversation.

It’s all about the defense. Put Matt on the Ravens and there easily 14-2….number 1 seed!

This is a no-brainer. Ryan is hands down the better QB. Flacco is going to be a good QB and I believe that he’ll have continued success in the NFL, but he was given a pretty good team and simply ask not to blow the game. He didn’t and showed that he has what it takes to play in the NFL.
As for Ryan, he was given a squad that openly admitted that they were under talented for an NFL squad. Yet he was a one of the main reasons (along with the Burner) for making this under talented squad a playoff contender. I suspect that this question will not even be debatable next year. His decision-making skill and poise is unmatched for a rookie QB. Once Ryan has a year of experience under his belt and the Falcons has fixed the problems on defense, he’ll be league and Super bowl XLIV MVP, and his Canton will be making plans for his display in the museum.
P.S. Ryan, don’t listen to this type of talk. None of this will happen if you don’t continue to work you’re a$$ off for it.

Joe Flacco has done a good job with the Ravens, but he came into a team that was cohesive, has one of the best defenses in the NFL and established chemistry in the locker room and if he had gone 3 and 13, as some rookies have, it would have been “oh, so what, look at Manning and Elway, they had bad rookie seasons.”
Matt Ryan came into a situation where his selection on signing day was greeted without any warmth. He came into a team that was in total disarray, with the exception of a few veterans and even they had to convinced about the new regime because they had been so burned with the last one. Matt Ryan not only had to learn the entire playbook in a very short time, both offensive and defensive lines were suspect, and don’t forget, he had to take the starting job away from two veteran quarterback. He had to come in, as a rookie, and convince the remainder of the team that he deserved to be called their leader and that he would not let them down. In addition to all those that, he had to win over a certain segment of the population in Atlanta. One misstep, anywhere, and he would have been crucified, as can be seen from previous blogs. If he had gone 3-13, it would have been “he’s a bust”. The young man must have remarkable strength to do what he has done this year and I applaud him, for both his physical abilities and his emotional and mental stability. I think we have only good things to look forward to with “Matty Ice.” By the way, what’s so bad about the nickname “Matty Ice”.

Team Ryan without question.
I don’t recall when the game was on Flacco shoulders to win. When Rex Ryan is gone after this year and their defense not getting any younger, Flacco would be lost.
I am thrilled RYAN is OUR QB!!!!

Team Flacco, Ryan had some clutch moments this year. I love the pass he made with six seconds left in the game to get a last second field goal. I think both QBs will be amazing in this league, they’re the next tom brady and peyton manning. For the Reg season Ryan deserved rookie player of the year. Post season there’s no debate Ryan looked like a rookie(first pass through into triple coverage when there was an easy dump off pass right underneath), joe has played like a vet. When ppl say the defense has made joe what he is, why hasn’t any qb been good in baltimore yet then?
Flacco bigger arm, just as accurate, a little more athletic and poised. Who’s still playing and who’s watching from his couch?

Where would Matt Ryan be with that D-Fense. Maybe a superbowl MVP? On the other hand, insert Flacco into the Falcons and I propose we have a three year project!!!!!

What if Ryan had B-more’s D? Maybe he throws two picks and Ravens are out first round. What ifs don’t matter. Flacco doesn’t have two dynamic backs like turner and norwood. Oh don’t forget we don’t have a game changing wide receiver like Roddy white. Wait till next year when we get our #1 WR hopefully and then you’ll see some eye popping stats from Flacco. Right now all he’s got is eye popping stats in the one category that really matters, WINS!

What a disappointment. It’s been almost two weeks without any real reporting about the Falcons. How about some initial guesses about free agency and maybe a mock draft? How about some interviews with the players? Anything but this fluff.

I could play QB for the Ravens and they would be almost as good. Flacco just relies on his unbelievable defense. He never has had to make throws like the one Ryan made at the end of the Chicago game.

MR2, although not by much. He was a much more consistent QB through the season. He also was given more of the offense and proved to handle it.
Flacco has done much better as the season has gone on. Of course he has a much better cast around him, especially their D. Hopefully both will be mainstays with their team for years to come and this draft class will be compared with that of ‘83.
Either way both teams made a good selection for themselves and both QB’s appear to have great futures ahead of them.

im not gonna lie. before the draft i hoped we didnt pick ryan because i didnt think he was a franchise qb. i hoped they would get somebody like Dorsey and take Flacco in the second round. he would have still been there and ryan would have been taken in the first round. but i couldnt have been more wrong!! Ryan has been unbelievable. he has turned this team around and has the entire city of atlanta buzzing. no disrespect to Flacco but a mediocre qb could have success in baltimore with the great defense and good running game. Ryan will continue to improve and continue to make me realize why i dont manage an nfl franchise. go falcons!

Who the FRAK cares?
They are 2 different QB asked to run 2 different styles of offense.
Joe Flacco is a “game manager” and the play calling is designed to protect him from throwing INT. He has shown excellent judgement throwing the deep ball to Derrick Mason.
However his stats are what they are b/c they won’t open up the offense b/c they can’t! They don’t have the personnel.
Then you add the Raven’s defense, you get points scored from their defense, and the extra possessions and short fields they create via turnovers, it simplifies Joe Flacco’s task to win games.
Matt Ryan is asked to do more, he has better weapons on offense around him (with the exception of the TE position), but that Ravens O-Line is just as good or better than the Falcons (another key component that must not be over looked by fans).
I dare say if the Falcons defense was as good as the Ravens, the Falcons would still be playing in the NFL playoffs.
They are both going to be all pro QB’s book it! They are both going to be winners.
It’s the disillusional racist MV supporter fans that want to rile up people by bringing up the Flacco over Ryan debate on the Falcons blog…so just b/c they did it enough times there is a blog dedicated to that?

Both Qbs are very good. I like Ryan’s “moxie”….Flacco has the same, but alot more than Ryan. People keep talking about Bmore’s defense, but the defense doesn’t mean anything if Flacco turns the ball over, which he doesn’t. Both QB’s have the “it” factor, as does Vick, both Mannings, Brady, Warner, Favre, McNabb……I believe thats it. I give the edge to Flacco. i don’t care if the defense “carried” Flacco, which isn’t entirely true. Flacco completes the big passes that are needed, not throwing into triple coverage and under throwing deep passes like Ryan. You can’t go wrong with either one, but I would take Flacco.

Team Ryan, hands-down. Flacco wasn’t even in the discussion for Rookie of the Year, Matt was the clear winner. Sure Flacco has a big arm, but does he actually use it? No sir, he only uses it on the deep-ball, which he throws quite often, completing 1-3 times a game. Flacco isn’t poised, he only looks poised because he stares down receivers and keeps his shoulders level, and his o-line has done such a good job of protecting him, he can just “chill” in the pocket, making it look like he’s poised. The identity of the Ravens is Ray Lewis, Ed Reed. The identity of the Atlanta Falcons is MATT RYAN, Michael Turner, Roddy White, John Abraham. Flacco has NEVER EVER taken the team on his shoulders and carried them, usually it’s that defense carrying Flacco, and they still are carrying him, all the way into the AFC championship. I can’t even use both hands to count the number of times Matty Ice has carried the Falcons, hold on, not only carried them, but carried them to VICTORY, cough* bears at home *cough. Please, Joe Flacco is a joke, he’s not a leader like Matt, and he can’t make every throw, even though he’s got an arm to do it, he throws a real heater and tight spiral so everyone thinks “HOLY COW, WOW, THAT’S A GREAT QB” no folks, that’s a great arm, and it’ll take a lot more to be a great QB, don’t get me wrong, Flacco will eventually be one of the top quarterbacks in this league BUT Ryan will be better…

Joe Flacco is the better of the two QBs, he ran a real NFL offense and not that college offense that was installed for Ryan. Ryan sucked the last 3 games of the regular season and the play-off game because Monty Kiffin exposed him. Ryan has a weak arm and cannot make plays unless the receiver is wide open. Joe Flacco can gun the ball into tight spots. You people keep talking about the Ravens defense, well if Flacco turned the ball over like Ryan did the last 4 games then The Ravens would be home just like the Falcons. Face it your QB has been exposed. He will suck next year as well. Ryan will be the next Danny Weurfell. The Falcons will win no more than 5 games. The weak schedule of 2008 is behind you. Flacco played against a much tougher schedule, he will be a more tested and prepared QB because of it. Ryan on the other hand will realize that he won’t be playing the Lions next season. You should have drafted Dorsey and then Flacco in the second round. Baltimore would have drafted Ryan and Flacco would have been there in the second round. I am not jumping on the Flacco bandwagon, check the archives. I have stated this all year including the preseason and before the draft. And, if Mularkey gets another head coaching job, Ryan is doomed for sure.
2008 season is in the reaview for the Falcons. So why keep harping on a lost season the Falcons are sitting at home just like the Lions. You fans will be happy with making the play-offs every 3 or 4 seasons. That is why the Falcons will never win a Super Bowl.

Flacco = Trent Dilfer. Only younger. Ryan is a way better talent who carried his team. Flacco not so much. All they’re asking him to do is to not do too much. If Ryan were on the Ravens and had that defense, they’d be 14-2 easy.

When ppl say the defense has made joe what he is, why hasn’t any qb been good in baltimore yet then? Ravens#1
First off the Ravens won SuperBowl XXXV with Trent Dilfer as their QB. Then the next year they made the playoffs with Elvis Grbac and an old Randall Cunningham as their QBs. Then they made the playoffs again in 2003 with Kyle Boller as their QB and the top seed in the AFC in 2006 with a past his prime Steve McNair as the QB. Each year the defense ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in total defense. The defense has made Flacco, just like the other QBs listed, a good QB. Put them on another team with a solid, less than steller defense and you are looking at 5-11 seasons for a few years. Just manage the game and don’t turn the ball over. He is asked not to lose it, while Matt Ryan is asked to win it. That is the difference. Team Ryan wins this debate.

No opinion from Vick Supporter 2 yet? Dude is slippin’…
Ryan has better timing with his receivers, plays with better fundamentals, and sees the whole field better than Flacco, but Flacco is bigger, stronger, throws a better deep ball, is more mobile, and has played better against good defenses this year than Ryan. It depends on what you want in a quarterback — do you want a pure passer or do you want a playmaker?. If I had to win a playoff game right now, from what I’ve seen, I’d probably rather have the playmaker Flacco, but I can see why people would rather have the pure passer Ryan.

A real NFL offense bigeasy? How is the Ravens offense any different than the Falcons? How are the Falcons a college style offense? Looks to me like the use the run heavily which the last time I checked is the definition of an NFL style offense. Its no secret that Ryan tired by the end of the season. That’s called adjusting to the longer schedule and every QB has gone through it. Kiffin did nothing different in week 15 than he did in week 2. The difference in the two games of course were the wins and how the Atlanta defense played. Everyone also forgets how Matt played in the Minnesota game. He played well against a good defense and took advantage of the TOs that his defense got him. And no he is not the next Danny Weurffel. Ryan has already thrown more yards and TDs than Danny did his entire short lived career. And how is playing the Bengals and Browns twice tougher than playing the Lions once? Falcons will be fine in 2009. Ryan will be a year older and the team will continue to improve.
By Gary
January 15, 2009 2:36 PM | Link to this
And…..The Falcons made the game close against Arizona (who by the way is still playing) because of Matt Ryan, not Turner. If the defense makes that stop on 3-16 who knows what would have happened. Joe Flacco is still playing because his defense caused Miami to turn the ball over in their own territory several times and exposed Kerry Collins like they did in Super Bowl XXXV. If Baltimore’s run to the AFC title game tells us anything it is that Ed Reed is a beast. He is the MVP of the Ravens playoff run, not Joe Flacco.

Both are excellent young QBs. But, after TB does more with Matt’s supporting cast during this offseason we will see what happens next year. I think Ryan will surge forward and win a MVP to go with his ROY. In the meantime, I wish Flacco well.

You forgot about the fumble that Ryan had against The Vikings that was luckily recovered in the end zone by a Falcon player. Why the excuse saying he got tired. Joe Flacco have not tired, what is your QB soft. Maybe you haven’t read the stories that Mularkey installed BC’s offense for Ryan that is why he looked so comfortable. Ryan is a chump, that has been exposed. Stop making excuses for him.

BY GARY, what about the INTs against the Cards. OK, cat your tongue now huh. Plus, the Cards beat to sorry NFC SOUTH teams. All teams in the NFC SOUTH played basically the same soft schedule. So what is your point. The teams in the NFC soft had inflated records because of their schedules. That is why all of them are sitting at home.

Matt Ryan is asked to win the game at the end because he put the team in a bad spot in the begining, remember his first playoff game. Joe doesn’t do that to his team because he knows wins are the only important stat. He has carried the ravens to victory many times this season. He drives the field all the time but you don’t see the TD #’s becasue we run more in the red zone more than any team in the nfl. We were down 27-13 to the browns and he droves us down field to complete the comeback. He drove the field with 4 minutes left on MNF to tie the game up in pittsburg and send it to over time. Ryan is a choker in the one big game he had this year. Joe doesnt choke he’s always calm cool and collected. suck on it

One more thing here……
I have heard several people talk about the Ravens schedule and Flacco playing better against tougher defenses. While I give the tougher schedule argument, I don’t agree with the defense analogy.
Flacco played the Steelers twice, Eagles, Giants, Colts, and Titans twice. I consider these teams to be the best defenses he played all year. His team’s combined record against them was 2-5 and only twice did his team score 20+ points in the game.
Ryan played the Bucs twice, Panthers twice, Bears, Eagles, Chargers, and Vikings. I consider these teams to be the best defenses he played all year. His team’s combined record against these teams were 5-3 and 4 times his team scored over 20+ points winning them all. He had the game changing drive against the Panthers and the game winning drive with 11 seconds left to beat the Bears. He is a leader as to which Flacco is a game manager.
While you also can say the Falcons schedule was softer, you cannot deny that the Ravens had some cupcakes on their schedule too. The Falcons played the Lions, Packers, Chiefs, Raiders, and Rams. The Ravens got to play the Bengals (twice), Browns (twice), Raiders, and Jaguars. The Ravens played 6 playoff teams and the Falcons played 5 playoff teams (these are teams, not how many times they played them). The Ravens played a slightly tougher schedule and came out with the same record as the Falcons.
One last thing to remember is Matt Ryan had better overall numbers than Flacco as well. His QB rating is much better than some recent rookie QBs.

The game against the Cardinals Matt did throw some INTs that cost his team. But the momentum swung in that game not because of a Ryan turnover, but a Turner turnover. When the Falcons could not run on the Cardinals, they put the ball into Ryan’s hands and he made plays. The no huddle second quarter drives resulted in the Falcons leading at half time. The fourth quarter drive resulted in the game closing to six points and Kurt Warner having to get his team three crucial first downs to ice it. You can look back and say Ryan did not have a great game, but he did keep the Falcons in it. The Vikings game was a dumb move by him, but yes QBs tire. Notice the scoring in the playoffs so far has been mostly because the defense has given Flacco great field position because of turnovers?

Ah the sounds of immaturity. Look I am not saying Flacco is a bad QB. I am saying that judging by the numbers and how the players fared, Ryan was the better QB this year. Both are going to be great QBs and win Super Bowls one day. Bank on that. But Ryan had the better year. His stats were better and no he did not choke in his only big game. As previously stated, the Falcons were still in the game against Zona because of Matt Ryan. Ryan also had good games against the Packers(when everyone thought they were good), Bears, Vikings, and the Sunday afternoon showdown with the Panthers in the dome. It was also the first time the Falcons had a QB come close to 3500 yards in over a decade. Another stat that is important is 11-5 in his rookie year.

Same record Gary? the Ravens are 13-5. The Falcons are 11-6. Talking about the schedule, The Ravens lost only to teams who made the playoffs. The only other team who can say that is the Steelers. The Bucs suck at D don’t count them as a good D, the chargers, and bears are weak too. Your rookie played a weak schedule and overall weak defenses. If they voted for ROY at the end of year like they should have Flacco would have won.

Hey bigeasy, why don’t you and the other Falcon haters wait until next year to see how good or bad the Falcons will be? This year, if any, should show everyone that good on paper does not matter. Its how you play the games on Sunday or Monday that matter. Dallas, New Orleans, Green Bay, New England, and Jacksonville were all supposed to have good to great seasons and make the playoffs. Every one of them were at home watching the Falcons, Ravens, and Dolphins play in the Wild Card round. The Falcons on paper should be better, but lets see how they do first.

Supes, Matt Ryan is going to be playing with himself this weekend because he can’t play with anyone else. I didn’t start this comparison the ajc did, and I didn’t feel Flacco was getting his respect so I backed him up. how you like them apples.
Gary, who’s atlanta playing on sunday again?
Day of Reckaning, you’re saying vick is better than flacco and ryan… Vick doesn’t deserve to even be in the same room as these guys at the qb position. Vick made roddy white look like a bust. First year in the nfl ryan shows what white truly is, a top 5 receiver in the nfl. I love vick as a athlete but not at qb, the guy is going to comeback and be a wr, bank on it. No team will even let him be the face of their organization again, it’d be a PR nightmare. he blew it.

The Ravens lose to the Steelers this weekend anyway. Give us the Ravens defense and the turnovers they created and we win the SB. Matt Ryan not only turned around a football team but He also got the entire state of Georgia excited about Falcons football again. Hands down Matt Ryan is the best.

flip flopping @$$ bigeasy830
Here are some of your own words from the Bird Babe: Defense lets down Falcons
Jan 8, 2009 10:56 AM By bigeasy830: I have nothing against Ryan. He was widely considered the best QB in the draft. I really had no problem with them drafting him if not Dorsey or Ellis. I think the only bad move was trading 2 second round picks for Baker.
Which one is it bigeasy830? Now that VS is watching you should choose your words carefully. At least he stays on one side. He doesn’t belly flop around like your bigeasy830 @$$. Flacco is good I admit, but don’t get mad at Ryan for making you look stupid. Even you must find it hard to believe the crap that you say. 2-14 in ‘08 with Ryan as QB, isn’t that what you said before the season? Now it’s no more than 5 wins next year? How do think up this stuff?

and nobody mentioned that Flacco did not start the season but was actually 3rd on the QB list after camp.
Nobody mentioned the week that Flacco had a 25% QB Rating.
Flacco is good but Ryan is fundamentally sound. if not for established Raven defense and the long bomb Flacco would already be out of the playoffs.

ITS CALLED NFL.COM
USE IT TO CHECK THE STATS!!
FLACCO PLAYED BETTER AGAINST GOOD DEFENSES?!!!!
WTF?! LOOK IT UP!! FLACCO SUCKED AND SUCKS WHEN PLAYING AGAINST REAL TEAMS, TOO BAD HE CAN’T PLAY THE BENGALS ALL THE TIME.
THE STEELERS ARE GONNA TEAR HIM A NEW ONE, OR SHOULD I SAY A THIRD ONE AFTER THE PREVIOUS BEAT DOWNS.
MATTY IS ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER AND IS MUCH MORE THAN A GAME-MANAGER, I GAURANTEE YOU THAT NO ONE IN PHILLY (THE B.S. PUNT FUMBLE GAME) OR IN ARIZONA WANTED TO SEE HIM GET THE BALL BACK WITH THE GAME ON THE LINE.
THE ARIZONA GAME IS ACTUALLY A GOOD EXAMPLE! HE CAME OUT SHAKY, THREW A COUPLE OF PICKS (ONE WAS TIPPED) BUT THEN GOT IN A RHYTHM AND DROVE THEM DOWN THE FIELD FOR SCORES.
DESPITE ATL’S TURNOVERS, MATTY DROVE THE BIRDS DOWN THE FIELD IN THE 4TH AND HAD THEM WITHIN A TD OF WINNING THE GAME!!
AND “THAT” WAS A BAD GAME FOR HIM!!
BOTTOM-LINE:
THE KID IS A WINNER. PERIOD.
FLACCO DIDN’T EVEN THROW FOR 3000 YARDS!!!!
AGAIN, PUT RYAN ON THE RAVENS AND YOU HAVE 12-4 AT WORST. PUT FLACCO ON THE FALCONS AND YOU HAVE 7-9 AT BEST.
BUT AT LEAST FLACCO DOESN’T BRUTALIZE DOGS, PULL STUPID $HIT, OR GET LOCKED UP IN PRISON.

Both have done great jobs as rookie QB’s, but I would take Ryan. Nothing against Flacco, he has also exceeded all expectations you can have for a rookie QB, but I think when you compare preseason expectations it is truly remarkable what Ryan did with the Falcons this season. Obviously, it is a team sport and Ryan didn’t do it on his own, but he provided leadership and took a team that was supposed to win 1 or 2 games to the playoffs. Baltimore was also coming off a tough season, but I think most people figured their defense would be back to their dominating ways this season, which obviously made it easier on Flacco. I look for them both to have long and successful careers.
I don’t know why Vick has come into this discussion (or any discussions since he probably won’t be playing again until 2010, if at all), but I would take either or the rookie QB’s over him. If I needed someone to help me pick out a dog that could kick other dog’s a*******e$ I would take Vick over Ryan or Flacco in a second. Those losers don’t know anything about training dogs to fight and killing them if they don’t perform well.

Roddy looked like a bust because he was a rookie “project” and he admitted himself that he didn’t put in the work to be a great WR until 2007. If you don’t believe me, look it up. He would have been the same reciever w/Vick at QB, maybe not so much w/Knapp and Mora running the team. Hell, Ryan may have not looked as good with those two morons as coaches.

I am firmly in the Team Ryan camp. Although only time will truly tell, I think Ryan has better mental, physical and leadership skills, and I think the future will bear him out. Joe Flacco has a strange wind-up kind of delivery which takes a fraction of a second longer and helps to telegraph him. Defences will figure him out in the future.

They ONLY difference between Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco is that Flacco has a defense that is solid. If our old tired defense hadn’t choked on the 3rd and 16 in the Arizona game, then we’d be talking about the Falcons vs. Eagles for the NFC Champioship. You give Matt Ryan a seriously upgraded defense next year with some speed; barring any serious or major injuries, we are in the playoffs at 12-4 baby! By the Brooking, if your reading this, I love ya man but ya gots ta go! You ain’t what you used to be in the speed catagory. They only way the Falcons would keep him for one more year is to either demote him to a back up or to take a sizeable pay cut. Otherwise, he retires after this year and then next year, we can honor HIM with his own banner in the hollowed rafters of the Georgia Dome.

The biggest difference between Flacco and Ryan after Sundays game at worst Flacoo will be 2-1 in the play-offs, Ryan will be 0-1. If you can’t come up big in Dec. and Jan. then you can’t romp and stomp with the big dogs. Flacco lead his team to th eplay-offs by playing great fundamental footbal and had very few turn-overs in Dec. and Jan. The Falcons won inspite of Ryan. Turner carried them into the play-offs. Ryan played like a chump in crunch time, now argue that. And, I don’t want to read about Ryan hit the Rookie Wall. Flacco is a rookie also.
Fresh for 2009, YOU SUCKERS!!!!!!!!!

Let me put this out there, I am not a Matt Ryan Fan! With that said, I am a falcons fan, and I think Matt Ryan has a lot of work to do. I think that he stepped into a bad situation and showed a lot of skill, a lot of promise and is sill leaps and bounds better than flat-o.. I mean Flacco…. Flacco has by far the best defense in recent history, that scores almost more than his offensive teams do…. they avarage more yards per play (on fumble and interception returns) than any phase of their offense. If you plugged Troy in flacco’s spot, the team may even be better. Flacco is going to be good…. but not as good as Ryan, unless they get Vick next year and put him in the “I” formation and run pitch and pass, or the wild-Vick or have a option for either Q-back to throw.(cant wait to have my #7 lions Jersey in 09… Vick to the lions so they can draft some o linemen… go Falcons go Vick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

When the Ravens and Flacco beat the steelers on sunday Flacco will be the only rookie starting to qb every to lead his team to a SB. Some ryan fans are arguing ryan is better because the steelers are going to beat us…how does that even enter the debate for ryan is better. We’re playing in the afc championship game, ryan was one and done. you’re pretty much proving our point that flacco is better. Flacco does have a unibrow (which is hilarious) but your qb still has his voice crack during every sentence, and you say he has confidence. One bad year for ryan and you’ll jump all over him and he’ll never be the same qb. There’s no debate we’re still playing and ryans playing with himself. Flacco will win Superbowl MVP!

For all of you so called “Flacco supporters” you are really Vick supporters. If Flacco was our QB, you would not have anything nice to say about him. I don’t recall Vick ever winning a Superbowl for the Falcons. I wish you all would please let it go!!!

**When Ryan only needs to complete 40% of his passes (Flacco went 9 for 23 in Miami) then we can compare. The Falcons can not and will not be able to ever win in that nature.”“
**The unfortunate situation about the Falcon QB situation is that not only will Ryan have to produce on the field consistently, which I believe he can do, he will forever have to hear about Vick and I think he has the mental toughness to do that. Not sure if Flacco would be able to handle the constant reminder of Vick by all of the idiot Vick supporters on this board, in this city and on the AJC Staff, T. Moore.””

Hats off to Flacco, he is a very good QB, but the Ravens are where they are primarily because of their defense. If Matt Ryan were the Ravens QB he’d probally be in the AFC Championship too! Imagine how dominate the Falcons would be if Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and the rest of the Ravens D were wearing Falcon uniforms.

Ryan could complete only 40% of his passes and win if he didn’t throw picks, fumble, and get sacked in the biggest game of the year. Try Flacco has not had a negative play in the playoffs yet this year! How about that stat. don’t make excuses about ryan needing to hear about vick. Joe goes out and wins because he is a winner. Ryan in big games 0-1(loser). Flacco 2-0(winner).

Understand this, in the grander scheme of things, it is not about Ryan or Flacco. The name of the game is win the Super Bowl. YES, baltimore has a great defense. Defense wins championships. That is why you should have drafted Drosey. I said earlier in the year that if Dosey was already gone with the first or second pick then Ryan would have been my choice. I thought Anderson would have shown better improvement this year so drafting another DE ala Chris Long would have been the wrong choice in the long run. You can’t keep drafting the same position year after year ala Dan Reevse and those tight ends. But, Dorsey was still there. Build your defense. The GM is not as smart as many of you believe. He got tricked by trading those 2 nd round choices for Baker. Baker would have been there in the 2nd round. The Falcons could have used those picks. But, plan and simple, The Falcons are not as close to the level of Baltiomore as in being close to a Super Bowl because they have not drafted right or traded right. If not for the signing of Turner they would have been 4-12. So don’t hate because Baltiomore knows how to build a championship caliber team. The Falcons will never get there and Ryan is a chump.

The biggest difference between you and someone who actually knows what they’re saying is the W-I-D-E @$$ gap between your ears. Flacco wouldn’t have done half of what Ryan did for the Falcons. Poor guy would have crumbled with all the hate filled flip flopping @$$ people like you pretending to be something you’re not. You’ve been EXPOSED as the fraud that you are. Go ahead and stay on the I Hate Matt Ryan Trail because he made you look like a chump. Don’t be mad at him for making you look stupid. You made yourself look stupid by predicting nothing but failure from Ryan only to have him completely destroy all expectations. Then you go on to say that you have no problem with him and that it’s hard to argue with the drafting of this years ROY only to follow that up by calling him a chump. Which one is it? I guess in front of the Vick Supporters you punk under pressure! Now argue that!!

Slim Shady, Until the Falcons make it to at least the NFC Championship game, I was right. One in done in the paly-offs means nothing. Flip Flop on that. Most experts thought the Falcons would suck, OK they had a good record. But that weak NFC South team lost everyone of their play-off games. The Falcons still suck and so does Ryan.

Sarah B - how is the Ed reed statement even come into discussion for this debate, make an intelligent argument please. What Matt Ryan did this season was choke in the one big game this year. he got picked, got saftied, and had a fumble returned for 6. Oh and you can’t wait till next year because you’re out of the playoffs, Joe and the ravens still playing.

You say that until the Falcons make it to at least the NFC Championship game, you are right. LMAO at you! Right about what? The main goal for every team should be to not only make the Super Bowl, but win it. That means every year 31 teams belly flop on that goal. You can hate on Ryan all you want for making you look like a chump. Guess what he’s gonna do next season? Make you look like a chump! I could care less if you like Ryan or not. Hell, I still like Vick, but I’m not going to bash Ryan only to change my opinion about him then go back to bashing him when the Vick Supporters get on the blog so I can make nice with them. Only a belly flopping @$$ chump like yourself would do such a thing.

I don’t hate the kid or The Ravens, in fact I hope they knock those arrogant Steelers out of it and we have an all Birds SB43 with Cards and Ravens - the 2 unexpected teams going at it. High scoring offense vs. super defense. Old dude vs. Rookie will make a great game!

Razor - ryan with our defense would have lost us the game because he gets sacked in the endzone, throws picks, and fumbles the ball for 6 the other way, like he did in the arizona game. He would have been the weak link, that god for flacco.

I usually just like to sit back and read all your arguments but i had to jump in on this one. I am really tired of people saying that Flacco should be ROY because it is simply not true. Ryan had to carry his whole team(with some help from Turner and White) as a rookie and still made the playoffs. Now this is my argument, while all you people are complaining about Ryan receiving ROY and not Flacco, who is the one that has a chance to get to the Superbowl? Thats rite, Flacco, wouldnt you rather have a chance to make it to the superbowl then to have your QB recieve ROY? i know i would, so stop complaining because your team is getting alot more than we have RIGHT NOW. Stop trying to take away what us loyal falcon fans have and start thinking about how your team has a chance to beat the steelers and go to the superbowl. you should be grateful your team made it this far because you just have no idea…..Hands down Ryan deserves ROY and hands down Flacco deserves to be in the championship game so with that Team Ryan wins……..

RYAN LEAF VS JOE FLACCO

No offense to Matt Ryan….Joe Flacco is the better quarterback
I’ve tried to hold this in as long as possible. But the time has come to let it out. Its time for me to become a man and defy every sports analyst in the industry. Are you ready for it? Here it is…..
JOE FLACCO IS BETTER THAN MATT RYAN.
And i’m not talking about a lot better than Matt Ryan. But its enough to make a compelling argument as to why these awards are giving off 2 Months before the season is actually over. And while i’m on the subject, i wonder who the Coach of the Year would be if we had a couple of more weeks to disect the subject. Something tells me Andy Reid, Ken Whisenhunt, and Jon Harbaugh, who combined for 0 votes, would have got a little more consideration. But thats another story.
For now we can focus on Joe Flacco, who for the time being, is making every NFL analyst look as dumb as the teenage guy who turned down Kim Lakefield for the Prom. I know….Kim Lakefield. Nobody turns down Kim, especially not with a last name like that.
But thats exactly how Joe Flacco makes them look sometimes. He is incredibly poised for a 23 year old thrust into the mega spotlight. Last year he was playing for Delaware in the Division II Championship. Today, he’s preparing to play with the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC Championship, and the right to play in the SuperBowl. Few quarterbacks ever get to the playoffs. He’s about to make some Hall of Famers very jealous.
Not only is he making history, but he along with Matt Ryan are changing the long time conception that Rookie Quarterbacks are not suppose to succeed.
But what makes this kid better than Matt Ryan is the fact that he’s doing more with less. Ryan had better weapons and the weaker divsion.
Flacco works with what he has and believe it or not, making some sub-par receivers look very good.
And i know you guys are thinking that Joe Flacco is succeeding because of that stellar defense.
NEWS FLASH!!!
This defense has been there forever. They are succeeding because they have an offense. They are succeeding because of Flacco.
The Ravens have only been to the AFC Championship 1 other time, and that was when they won the Super Bowl. They haven’t been back since. At least, not until now.
Joe Flacco reminds me of Peyton Manning. The big arm, the way he studies the game, and the way nothing seems to bother him.
Matt Ryan reminds me of Tom Brady. Ice in his veins. Making all the right throws. And lets face it, he’s ok on the eyes.
Still its obvious that Joe Flacco is the better quarterback. The proof is in the pudding. And if ya need more proof, Joe Flacco is sure to give you some. Just tune in on Sunday at 6:30 pm. Pittsburgh may be eating a lot of that pudding on the field. Jan 14, 2009 | 11:01PM | report this

The people who cover sport are bias as hell! If he is not a golden boy at QB the Media has no use for them no matter how good QB they are . You can be a running back DB but QB not in the NFL. You are a outcast from day one . Read any new paper ,Bias as hell ESPN, Fox sport, SI, most of all of them are good Ole boys Local 680 the fan is a joke. Most of the players are black but the system is keeping Black QB out of the Game. It is not that they can’t play the game the game don’t want them to play QB! Ryan had a great running back the offense line in much better and coaching is much better. any body that has or had season ticket knows this is the case in Neck-ville. And for Ryan he did what the system let him do! He is not a bad kid but the system is bad!(NFL owner) and media!! Listen to any Game with a Black QB playing and listen to the media outcast him every game on the tube now day’s flat screen TV!!!! Just listen to the good OLE BOYS. This is there system and it will be a long time before they get close to being fair! Sure hope MCnab wins for all the Black QB now and before him for all the SH-T they gone though by the system!!!

Kenny stop your whining it’s just annoying, yes we all want the superbowl ring that’s not what this debate was about. ROY, MVP, Coach of the year, we know they all don’t matter because they’re for the Regular Season. If you voted for those awards after the season maybe Ryan still gets ROY, no way mike smith wins coach of the year. I don’t know how the superbowl winner wouldn’t win that award unless it was a turnaround like the dolphins season. we’re not trying to take anything away from what ryan has done for you crybaby. your cities talk show started this debate you whiner. Flacco wins in the games that matter, Ryan hasn’t yet(one and done). He’s a good player but he choked in that game huge and lost you that game. They stacked the box with 8 guys and 9 sometimes and ryan still got sacked in the endzone through picks and fumbled the ball for 6 the other way, choked! He didn’t deserve the nickname matty ice for that game.

You people are happy that your QB won the ROY award, while real football fans in Baltiomore are Cheering their team on in the AFC championship game. Falcon fans have such a loser mentality. Who cares about individual awards. I will put it this way. Good players have very good stats in the regular season, but great players are defined by great plays in great moments. Matt Ryan is at home Flacco is playing in the AFC Championship game. Flacco has made great thorws in the play-offs, that bullet he threw down the sidelines in that last game, no way can weak ar Ryan make that throw. Ryan had a good statistical rookie season, but Flacco if they win Sunday and if they win the Super Bowl, his season will be defined as great and his career will be on a path to greatness ala Big Ben. Until Ryan comes up big in Dec. and Jan. you Ryan Supporters have no argument at all.

Congratulations on your teams success this year. I have no problem with Flacco. I’m glad you guys finally got your QB of the future. That position seems to have held the team back for a while now. Both he and Ryan are talented QB’s and helped their respective teams get into the post season. I’m not going to pretend like I know everything thats going on with your team, but if Flacco could have come to this city and succeed like Ryan did then more power to him. Don’t let Vick Supporter 2 fool you. If the Falcons would have replaced his God with Flacco then he would have been bashing him as well. Vick still holds that iconic status with a lot of people and it might be a long time before it goes away. There was a lot of pressure put on Ryan to come in and provide a different kind of face. I’m not saying Flacco couldn’t do it, I’m just saying Ryan did do it. And as far as saying Ryan choked, well maybe he did and maybe he didn’t, but he was the only offense we had in that game. Right after they showed the promo of Ryan and why he’s called Matty Ice, Collinsworth says it seems like a Matty Ice moment and then Ryan leads the offense down the field for a TD. If the Ravens had lost with Flacco’s stats looking the way they do, would you say he choked?

The only people who gives a damn about the 2007 for the Falcons are well the Falcons. The rest of the country had their own problems. The ravens won only one more game than the Falcons so how was Flacco’s situation any different. Plus, Flacco was not handed the startin QB job during OTAs. He was behind the learning curve and had to catch up around the 3rd pre-season game. Anyway, who care about individual awards are you a fan of your team or just a Matt Ryan jock sniffer.

Kenny - I’m not whining during this debate, I’m making points stating facts. You cry about your past team and what it went through and want ppl to feel sorry for you. Whatever happens in this game with the steelers Joe already kicked more a* this year than matty choke in the big game. I’m glad you’re rooting for the steelers I don’t want your whining a* rooting for my team. And Joe still hasn’t had a negative play in the playoffs (no sacks, no picks, no fumbles), thats a stat for winners.

Anybody saying Flacco is a better QB than Ryan needs their brain examined. His last game against the Dolphins 9-23. Notice in each game he’s in the defense saves him. If the Falcons had the Ravens defense we would have been going to the Super Bowl. Flacco is going to get knocked out this weekend. So all the little Vick nut huggers that can’t get it thru their head that VICK IS NEVER COMING BACK TO ATLANTA. Can right all the threads they want to against Ryan. He is tons more accurrate than Flacco and VICK and the numbers prove it.
Ryan 16 Tds 11 INTS 3440 yards and a rating of 87.7
got sacked 17 times
Flacco 14 Tds 12 INTS 2971 yards and a rating of 80.3
got sacked 32 times
Numbers don’t lie, and its always helpful if your not that good to have the No.2 defense in football. Flaccos job was alot easier. Ryan blows him away. **

Slim Shady - You look at Flacco’s stats and say they’re bad because they’re not sportscenter eye popping stats, I get that. The stats that matters the most are wins. If Ryan had a playoff win I’d be more impressed with his rookie year. For the debate of who had a better rookie year I think without question Flacco going this far in the playoffs and without a negative play for his team is an eye popping stat. Ryan didn’t do that for his team, he had crucial turnovers and took a sack in the endzone. Yes he did put together some nice drives but in the end he hurt your team. If he doesnt fumble, throw a pick, and get sacked in the endzone you win that game. If Flacco chokes in the game this Sunday yeah I’ll say he choked. Either way he’s had two wins to ryans zero wins, the debate is over in my mind, Team Flacco

native falcon - 9 -23 with no picks no sacks and no fumbles, no errors! Count how many times Ryan made bad decisions in the arizona game. Ryan makes all those bad decisions in either of our games we lose them. The stats for the regular season don’t count if one qb goes way farther in the post season than the other qb. Get your head examined flacco is 13-5, ryan is 11-6. thats the stat that matters. Football is all about wins not any other stats. Ryan(0-1) one and done, Flacco (2-0).

FROM WHAT I HEAR, FLUKE-O IS A PRETTY NICE KID AS WELL. BUT THE KID DIDN’T EVEN THROW FOR 3000 YARDS WHILE RYAN THREW FOR OVER 3400.
SO DON’T GIMME THAT BS THAT FLUKE-O WAS THE REASON THE RAVENS WON THEIR GAMES.

RS2 - In the Tennesse game we had 30 rushes for 50 yards. Flacco won that game. He had some huge drives to put up points on the #1 team in the NFL. Our Defense gave up nearly 400 yards of offense, (got three turnovers in the red zone, thank god). Also you talk about our D so much look at your O and what ryan has to work with. A top 5 receiver, The second best running back and a game changer like norwood (why that guy doesnt the ball 15 times a game boggles my mind). Flacco wins and that what matters in the NFL. This isn’t baseball where everything is based on stats. How many superbowls you win is all ppl are remembered for. *This is easy. *
When you measure where a man is, you have to take into consideration from where he started. The Ravens could go on and even win the Super Bowl, still, Joe Flacco would not have accomplished nearly as much as Matt Ryan.
See, the Ravens had a well established team and a premier defense when Flacco took over, and as we all know, defense wins in the playoff. Matty Ice, on the other hand, took over a team that was in total disarray. Who accomplished more?

Who wrote this article? what a waste of time. You are comparing two Qb’s so I take it that you meant who is the better QB and not who is the best of the two. Remember when you compare two it is better and three or more is best. Give us some i nfo on Draft prospects or interviews with Falcons Brass and not this sorry a** article.

VS2 Payton Manning does not have a big arm, if anything Ryan should remind people more of Manning because early in the season, he was more fundamentally sound in his delivery and his decision making. Flacco is moore like Big Men big strong QB from small school.I am sick of the Ryan/Brady comparison. Until Ryan and the Falcons win multiple Super Bowls, let that one go. Brady ws not one and done is his first play-off appearence.

one year is no standard. all of this wishful think of a super bowl. on the real to hell with qb defense is the standard. and where do the neck-ville falcons rank. Until they become a team ranked in the top eight you are just wasting you blog time. Ryan, Vick, flacco. Flacco has the best chance because they have the prototype defense. Malabo is third and pit is second. That why neck-ville should have drafted defense in the first round. That why you need football players like ray Lewis and in neck-ville and the necks and good ole boy media will never stand for that why they will all ways lose . Mind set in ownership fans and media must change. hate is so strong on both side. one side has the power but it will not matter until we come together as a team , fans owners, and media that stand together we can and will win. Be let get real this is neck-ville . listen to the bias sport media bias owners bias and fans bias. But change must come to neck-ville and right now is not our season for change but it will come watch and see!!! I hope ME and many other can live to see it!!!

I don’t know who wrote that article that VS2 (crackhead) keeps flaunting, but it completely lost credibility when it claimed the Ravens play in a better division than the Falcons! I wish we would have gotten to play both the Bengals and Browns twice!

Like we knew in the draft, MR has best leadership but Flacco had the arm strength. In the end, it looks like arm strength wins. MR under thrown interceptions in playoffs from weak arm was what we feared most. They should wait until the playoffs are over to give out NFL awards.

The only reason why joe flacco is where he is today is all because of his defense. If it wasnt for ed reed, ray lewis, and terrel suggs then they would be just another crappy team with a rookie quarterback. But matt ryan just took over a franchise that was falling apart and turned them into a playoff contending team with a mediocor defense and still made the playoffs. Nothing has changed with Ravens just a new quarterback. Plain and simple Ravens+ no defense = joe flacco is a failure

Yeah, wow! That McNabb sure put a hurtin’ on the Cards. Whoa! What a massacre. That should show how weak Matty Ice and the Falcons were, to lose to Arizona! And that Flacco, woo-hoo! Did he ever put it to the Steelers! That should prove who the real Rookie of the Year is. Vick Supporter 2, how DO you do it, man? I’m in awe!
