Tebow returning to lead Gators

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow says he is returning for his senior season.

The Gators won the national title Thursday night. Does Tebow’s return make them a heavy favorite to repeat as champs? Can anybody beat Florida next season?

How do UGA fans feel about the news? The Bulldogs have lost their starting QB, Matthew Stafford, to the NFL and now find out their big rival will be keeping its former Heisman winner.

What’s the reaction from Florida and Georgia fans?

We can only hope Tebow will be eaten by cannibals on one of his missionary forays. Otherwise, it will be the Dawgs on the menu.

it will be better when we beat them next year. Don’t forget - when Florida wins a title (96 & 06) we’ve whipped them the next year. And we won’t need memories of end zone dances to get motivated.

I am a UGA fan, but think it is great that he is returning to lead his school for another year and has a chance to win both another Heisman and National Championship. If UGA is to be the best it will have to beat the best. Florida can be beat so why not the Dawgs?

I welcome Tebow. I mean who wouldn’t want to see a kid with that much passion and desire for the game not to return. He obviously wants to return so he can help the Gators win another Championship. Too bad Stafford and Moreno don’t have this way of thinking, or they would have probably done the same in trying to help Georgia win the Big Game. Thats the difference between Tebow and Stafford/Moreno…..his mind on on the team, and his desire for championships, and Stafford/Moreno’s mind is too busy on the all mighty dollar. Tebow knows his millions will come whether its this year or next…..but he doesn’t care about the money. HE LOVES AND CARES ABOUT THE GAME…..should wish that #7 and #24 felt the same way

GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tebow is a great player and a great person. Him coming back means the SEC is going to be tough again. He can be beaten with a good pass rush.

Question is: Can UGA generate one ????

By Dustin

January 11, 2009 5:56 PM | Link to this

Everyone is saying Tebow will not play QB in the NFL and is going to be a 2-4th rd draft pick if he came out this year. Would you leave early for that? I don’t think it is all about the team, it is about improving draft position and trying to show the NFL scouts he can play in the NFL. And don’t compare this with #7 and #24. They are first rounders this year, why take the risk of getting hurt?

I am a tride & true dawgs fan, but I think it is great that Tebow is not entering the draft. If we were honest with ourselves, we all wish Stafford would have stayed but understand his decision to go. Tebow is a good all around person and he is welcome to make his own decisions.

Say what you will about Stafford/Moreno. I’m extremely dissapointed they didn’t return also. You need to realize though that it’s a different situation. Staff/Moreno are pretty much assured of going in the 1st round, & Tebow isn’t. He’s a great player, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t wnat to hear people say that UGA’s players only care about the $. How do you know Tebow wouldn’t have done the same thing if he was projected to get drafted higher? We wouldn’t have been favored to beat them even if that duo teturned next yr. anyway. You never know…maybe we’ll bear them. Even if we don’t..he’s graduating after next yr. anyway.

Tebow made a smart life decision.. like someone said above me, 4th round picks don’t leave college early. Best college player ever in a town and college full of easy girls and rednecks who bow to him. He knows he probably won’t pan out in the NFL so why not add to his legend?

As a Dawg fan, the Bulldogs have zero chance in Jacksonville. Hopefully Tebow staying is a wake up call to UGA top to bottom…

By Sports Fan

January 11, 2009 6:13 PM | Link to this

You are sadly mistaken if you think the only reason Tebow is coming back is because of his loyalty to Florida and his desire to win another championship. The NFL is not calling for Tebow like it is for Stafford and Moreno. He’s not even a first round pick. Why would he come out this year? People go to college to get an education and position themselves to have a financially stable career. Moreno and Stafford will now be set financially for the rest of their lives. Why should the stay another year and risk injury just to prove their “loyalty” to the fair-weather fans of UGA?

By Why we should ALL like Tebow...

January 11, 2009 6:14 PM | Link to this

“You know, everybody, they can look and say how easy it is. But it’s definitely not that easy. The difference is ‘cause not many people want to wake up at 5, go through workouts, go speak to young kids, go back, eat lunch, go to class, go to tutoring, go speak at a prison at night, come back. I mean, more people would do those things; they just don’t want to sacrifice.

“You know, there’s a lot of leaders out there. But, unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of good ones. So that’s always been my dream and my goal, is to be someone like Danny Wuerffel was to me, to be someone that a parent can say, ‘Hey, this kid did it the right way.’ That’s always been my dream and my goal more so than winning a trophy or winning a championship.

“So if it’s cynical or whatnot, that’s fine. If people don’t believe it, that’s fine. There’s always going to be naysayers, people that are going to say it’s fake. But that’s fine because you can’t control everybody. But I can control what I do, my attitude, how I approach the situation. So how I approach the situation is I want to do everything in my power that football gives me to influence as many people as I can for the good because that’s gonna mean so much more when it’s all said and done than just playing football and winning championships.”

-Tebow, when asked about how good he has it.

I am the world’s #1 Gator-hater but this proves to me that Tebow is not only a great athlete but a smart athlete. He knows what the NFL history shows for QBs that don’t finish what they start in college. He obviously can read and study, whereas apparently Matthew Stafford can’t.

Hey ugarulz44:

You might want to let Timmy know that getting “unsportsmanlike conduct” penalties and running around taunting and “chopping” at opposing teams and their fans is certainly not Christian-like. If he wishes to promote such a strong Christian platform, he should at the very least learn to ACT like a Christian. The fervor with which people worship this kid is disturbing.

By Huh?

January 11, 2009 6:39 PM | Link to this

I have no idea how Tebow’s return reflects poorly on Matthew Stafford. Their situations are very different. Stafford is projected to be a top 10 overall pick. Tebow was projected as a 2nd or 3rd rounder. Stafford’s decision was much more difficult that Tebow’s. This has absolutely nothing to do with Stafford.

I like the guy personally, but hate the school he chose to attend. His personality and attitude just do not fit in at Florida! However, as much as I think he’s a good person, I am sick of hearing about him. We all know he didn’t go pro because he know he won’t be drafted high, if at all.

Tebow is a great college player! But really was there any doubt he would return? He is not projected to be a QB in NFL so I guess thoughts of being TE bored him!

i’m a big GA fan and from that perspective id love to see him go pro - BUT it’s great for college football when these guys come back for that senior year - it says a lot about their character and level of commitment….kudos to him. On a related note a paper out of Gainseville has Harvin and Brandon Spikes quoted as saying they were leaning towards returning so they could go for title #3 with Tebow.

By TampaGator

January 11, 2009 6:44 PM | Link to this

The rummor now is that Both Harvin (who said he is leaning towards coming back) and Spikes will return for their senior years. If a wide receiver (to replace Murphy) and OL (to replace Twoutwein and Watkins at the two tackle postions)step up, then the Gators are going to be very powerful in 2009. The QB coach Florida just hire from the NFL and formerly at Michigan is one of the main reasons Tebow is coming back. He will work with him to improve his mechanics. Imagine a Tim Tebow at QB with excellent mechanics. Yikes!

I seriously doubt that tebow and the 09 gators will pull a georgia ‘08. they will be back in the big game regardless of all the hype….they are too well coached and talented to choke up as well as having the greatest player to play the game behind the one and ONLY Hershal……late

One more thought before calling it a night. Ever wonder why Georgia’s two, first rounders (Stafford and Moreno) went pro so fast and Florida’s two, first rounders (Spikes and Harvin…and possibly Tebow as a third) either are coming back or really are thinking hard about coming back. Rip Urban Meyer all you want, Dawg fans, but he has built a “team” in Gainesville for which kids love playing. Richt can recruit (and so can Urban) but he does not have that connection with his players that Meyer has…and he is nothing near the coach Meyer is either.

Jesse - You’re right, maybe the “unsportsmanlike conduct” penalties are “unChristian-like”, but they are a sign of a fierce competitor, which everyone knows Tim Tebow is. No one said he was perfect. However, if you watched the kids interact after the game (and by your comment, I’m sure you didn’t), he was shaking hands with and talking very cordially to the young man he “chomped.” To me, that’s very sportsmanlike. “Learn to ACT like a Christian” … no one talks the talk and walks the walk like Tim Tebow. No one.

Tim Tebow made a decision that he thought was best for him. I can’t believe that people that have never even talked to the guy can express such vulgar and inmature comments about a good kid. Some of you people are pitiful and make me sick. If the shoe fits put it on and wear it. You need to grow up and find some other way to relieve your frustrations than to rip a great person that happens to be a great football player.

Tebow is a great player, leader and human being. And he’s made a great choice.I personally think TT would have stayed even if he had projected as high as Stafford. We’ll never know. What we do know is that he seems to be motivated by atypical factors including team and the glory of God.I loathe Florida and even pulled for Oklahoma even though I’m SEC and OU is one of my least favorite teams. I would have pulled for Florida only if they’d played USC.I thought a Florida win would make it harder for us to recruit Greg Reid and Jarvis Jones.Kids like these have a hard time resisting National Champions. I think we (UGA) have a chance next year because we don’t know how great Joe Cox,Carlton Thomas, and Waushan Ealey can be and we don’t know if our defense can return from its year-long swoon.A 20 year UF trend and all their returnees does not bode well but we can reverse the trend with Coach Richt, the returning injured and some of the younger players.I know this sounds like a homer talking but if Stafford had hit Trip Chandler wide open in the end zone, Caleb King had not missed his block on Spikes and MS had not thrown the pick six that 39 point blow-out would have been quite different. Three plays. Sturdivant, Owens and some of the others can more than make up for three plays. The loss of Andre Smith and Alabama’s subsequent meltdown shows just how consequential our loss of Sturdivant was. Sturdivant is no Andre Smith but he is the best we have on the O-Line and losing him and then Owens was huge.Tebow is a generational player like Hershel. But he can be beaten. Ole Miss proved that. The loss to Tech seems even more incredible after the Tech-LSU game.I have no explanations for that one. If that’s really who we are we’re in deep trouble. Let’s hope it was an aberration.

I think the Gators have a great team. However, Tebow is not a first rounder and Harvin will be a lifetime kick retuner in the NFL. Remember Peter Warrick? Stafford is a top 3 pick and Moreno may go top 10. IT’S THAT SIMPLE! All the talk about “loyalty” and “team” have nothing to do with it.

jesse——The SAT score quoted as Tim Tebow’s, 890, was actually the average of Ron Zook’s recruits. Those numbers, as recently cited by the AJC, are four years out of date. I also just checked the Rivals.com and Scout.com websites: Tim Tebow’s high school GPA and SAT scores were never publicly released.

Tim Tebow carries a 3.77 college GPA, and was named as an Academic All-American by ESPN in 2007.

Next time, Google before you make up statistics. You officially now have zero credibility on this topic. Time to change your blog handle … again.

Well, FLA is going to be great in 2009. Tim T. may win another title. However should the teams on their schedule (UGA included) forfeit the games, b/c they are going to be so afraid of FLA so why even play the schedule huh?

I guess we’ll go ahead and crown your FLA team SEC and National Champs and just save us the “formality” of playing out the games. NOT!

Is FLA going to be very, very good? Yes. Should they have the #1 ranking? Yes they should, they are that good.

However this entire blog article is pure crap.

Instead of focusing on the positive, a great college player returning for his senior year, it’s “Oh wow, UGA fans, be afraid, the big bad Tim T. is coming back to get us, whatever shall we do now”.

So tired of this crap from the AJC. Trying to put a UGA “angle” on everything is just ridiculous.

Can’t we just say congrats to FLA and enjoy having Tim T. for one more season as a FLA gator and be done with it?

I guess not, we must give the “masses” some other blog to go back and forward with UGA/FLA pointless banther.

There is not a Georgia fan on this blog that wouldn’t take Tebow over the pudgy, unmotivated, “rocket-armed” Matt Stafford in a heartbeat. I find a lot of symbolism in the fact that the underachieving UGA quarterback has bolted for the NFL, while the guy with two national titles and a heisman is coming back for his senior season. Unfortunately, 2009 will make make 2008 look downright competitive.

T - If UGA has ANY pride left (after the beatdown we received this year), they better not allow FLA to hang 50 points on the scoreboard.

Not sure how much if any the bye week before the game, may help us be more competitive in that game, but FLA should be the prohibitive favorite, no questions asked. I think they should be favorites in ALL of their games for that matter.

Atlanta Gator

I’m not blaming you at all, I said it was the AJC who has to “put up” crap blogs like this b/c they know it generats hits and replies.

In all fairness, again FLA is going to be a great team next season, and Tim T. is the best college leader (on the field and off the field) I’ve ever seen. He’s also a pretty darn good QB!

All things are lining up for FLA to shoot for an undefeated season and back to back National Championships. Enjoy it FLA fans!

I should point out, given some of the comments about Florida having dumb athletes that the current Gator football team had 11 senior graduate in December, four from Graduate School, where they used their eligibility. All of the Seniors will graduate by Summer Semester for a 100% graduation rate, the only one in the SEC, at a school that is ranked significantly higher than UGA in academics. Also, two of the seniors will go to Law School, and one to Med School after their graduate. Check out the UGA stats; I don’t think they’ll come close. Urban Meyer has stated his number one goal is to graduate student athletes, not win championships. He’s also proven you can do both.

How is it that Tim Tebow wins 1 championship as a starter and now he’s the greatest college football player of all-time? Does anyone think Florida would have won the NC without Percy Harvin? Florida has a very good football program, which is exactly why they won it two years ago with Chris Leak. Florida may have won another championship during Leak’s sophmore year had Spurrier been the head coach intead of Ron Zook. I think Tebow is a good kid and good example for young kids. However, it’s amazing to me how some want to annoint him as the second coming.

Okay, I don’t deny he can play football. But this hero worship is like he decended straight from the right hand of God. His appalling antics on the ball field by taunting his opponents only show me that football and WINNING are #1 in his life. Not God. Yes, he may do soe good work with kids. But his competitive attitude is VERY NASTY and very un-Christian. He makes me sick. I had respect for him at one time, but no longer. The chomping in competitors face, yelling, pumping fists, all turned me off. You win with pride. You don’t throw it in someone’s face when you do. He is not an example to any kid I know. Not worried about Tebow. He didn’t look so sharp in 2007 against Georgia. Georgia has proven that they can beat Tebow and the Gators.

That said, Tebow is an amazing athlete and college football player. I’m not sure if he has the arm strength to be a starting QB in the NFL, but just about every team in the NFL would draft him in the 1st round and find a place for him on the field.

The real question for Florida will be whether Harvin and Spikes leave early. Losing those 2 guys would be huge!

The only person this is is bad news for is Tim Tebow. By staying at Florida he may become the greatest COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYER ever. He may get his ACL torn or his head knocked off running Urban Myers college football style spread offense. He will not take any more snaps under center or throw more passes from the pocket running that offense and as a result he will not become any more prepared to play the QB position in the NFL. He will not improve his draft position by staying at Florida for another year. He should jump to the NFL as soon as he can.

Matt Stafford chose the NFL over his teammates and university. He will never have the opportunity to play college ball again.

Two of your players are going to be 1st round draft picks and make a bunch of money, you have a brand new UGA, Mark Richt is your head coach, Willie is defensive coordinator, you play “between the hedges”, you just won the Capital One Bowl game. Come on old red and black look on the positive side of things. There is always next year and the next and the next. Oh yea I almost forgot, only three wins vs UF in the last nineteen games and no NC since 1980, no Heisman winners since Hershey Bar, and the Jackets just kicked you fannies in Athens, yea I’d would probably mad too.

As Great as Tebow is in College, he will never make it in the pro’s. To learn a new position and then be a Pro at is very diificult and only a handful of players have ever done it (Matt Jones). However, someone will give him a 3 year contract and he’ll be a back up QB or an HBack but after 3 years he’ll be back at Fla doing color for their TV crew or on a mission field winning souls for Jesus. Which would be the best thing for this crazy world anyway.

Dude sooo you mean to tell me that you have never played any kind of game or sport and taunted or talked a little bit of smack??? WOW…i guess what you are saying is that if anybody acts like that than they must run to the first church they see because they are going to Hell….In sports people get worked up!!!!! people lose their cool and sometimes they let the best get to them. I just find it so amusing that people jump all over TEBOW because of a little Gator chomp, but we love it when KNOWSHON did the Soulja Boy, Mo Mass did the Gator Chomp last year in J’vile, and the absolutely loved one of the “biggest and devoted Christian coach” in the country Mark Richt sent his entire team on the field in celebration. I guess because of all those actions KNOWSHON, Mo Mass, and CMR are not Christian uh???

You can attack a man for who he is but you shouldn’t take a jab or shot at a man for what he believes in. With that being said….I am a true DAWGS fan through and through, but if I had my choice in who I would want my son to look up to as a football player and a true role model…..it would be TIM TEBOW.

I am not surprised that he is returning. Florida with or without Tebow will still be a formidable opponent for UGA. It will be very interesting year after next to see who will draft Tebow and how he will be used. I do not know if he would be that good of a pro quarterback. He is not the greatest passer. He is a great athlete and can be used as a specialty player, perhaps at times at QB at other times as a receiver and/or running back. Who knows he might be a good defensive player. But STOP WITH ALL THE CHRISTIAN “HATING” TALK. Tebow is probably one of the most true and real college kids there are. He is truly an ambassador for the sport. He is a solid Christian and is not afraid of displaying that. I read in one of these blogs written here that…”TEBOW” needs to act like a christian instead of getting unsportsmanlike penalties….well I guess that guy and whoever else thinks that way never saw that Tebow spends his spring breaks on mission trips to poor third world countries(as he has his whole life), or that he has gone to prisons in Florida to speak about his faith with prisoners. Those things are what being a true and loving Christian is all about ….LOVING AND CARING ABOUT PEOPLE. Doing the Gator Chomp doesn’t mean that you are any less of a Christian.

Just wanted to say that was pretty low. What has Tebow done that would warrant such a comment. Name one college kid who cares so much about people and life outside of football like this kid does. While our players are getting hammered drunk and getting DUI (no IM not proud of how kids act, but they are just that….KIDS) during their off season, TEBOW is spending it going to Florida prisons and talking about his faith. While our boys are doing keg stands during Spring Break…Tebow goes on mission trips to the Philippines to help underprivileged children. Gator or not….thats a man I can look up to and respect. Life is more than just football and beer Michael. Sounds like to me that you are the one who should have listen to those “pricks” that were reading the Bible and talking about Jesus….. life would have been a lot easier, and Who knows maybe you could have been a Heisman Trophy winner too.:)

With all due respect Tebow(because he as done quite well)…..but comparing rushing TDs with that of Herschel Walker one would have to looking further into the statical realm of it all. Meaning I wonder how many rushing TDs Tebow has from the 5yd line in versus how many he has for over 30+yds. Yes…he has earned his TDs statics wise, but put anyone on the 5yd line with a good O-line and they would rack up rushing TDs as well. Herschel rushed for 5,259…..and trust me G8TR, Herschel didn’t earn all those yards from being in the red zone and on the 10 yd line

great college player no doubt but he stayed because he may not even be drafted . fullback at best if that. NFL is not college and he can’t cut it there…

As a Gator fan, I want to defend Stafford and Moreno. Stafford is projected to go very high and will make a great pro and scared me every time he dropped back. Moreno will be a great NFL back, too, but I was always perplexed how he took himself out of games—imagine Stafford or Tebow doing that? Tebow’s return to UF IS a combination of his projections and his incredible love for UF and the college game AND his integrity. No, the Gators won’t be unbeatable—no team is—but if Harvin comes back as well I may want to take that back. But I have great respect for UGA and Dawg fans and I never go to Jax without significant worry. Let’s look forward to a great 2009 for both programs!!

It showed all year: Stafford and Moreno were not team players, out for their own glory. Tebow was, and remains, a team player.

As a DAWG fan it hurts knowing that he will kill us in October. I will say this, he has class, more than a few that have come through ATHENS. It is obvious that he is not swayed by money like a few who left college early. Whether he makes it in the NFL or not, the kid is going to do great things. It is a shame that we judge talent based on whether someone can throw a ball or run with it. As long as ATHENS only cares about winning, UGA will continue to be overrated. GO DAWGS, learn by example!

Not, a Florida or Tebow fan. But, I am proud that he isn’t like some of the kids that are able to go to school for free. And is getting his 4yr degree. I have never thought he was a great quarterback. But, he plays with heart.

He was never going to leave. I believe that he is the greatest CFB player in at least the last 15 years, but this was a calculated move to add to his own legend. Give it the ‘ole I’m coming back like Manning did. Tebow was never going to crack the top ten or first round of the draft as a QB, so why go now?

Listem, GA fans, the bottom line is your team SUCKED this year! Hate on Tebow and the Gators all you want, but it still will not change the fact that they spanked you this year and by the way they have another NC. What do you have? Over-hyped team from the get go this year, and choked. Most of you are band wagon fans who will moan and groan point fingers at others and their teams, but on the other hand, you will stay low key until you think you have tasted a little success like your little Sugar Bowl win last year. Give me a break and stop all of your cheap talk until you actually win something to hoop it up about. Until then, leave Tech and all others out of your trash talking since we all know that is what it is without substance.

Tebow=Class

GATORS= National Champions

The over and under for the number of UGA football players arrested before August is 10. You will never win championships until CMR starts to instill some discipline in his players Why do you think UGA was the most penalized team in the country.

I wish someone would explain why any good QB would come to UGA to be coached by Bobo. Zier is who you need. By the way, Myers just added a NFL QB coach for Tebow in his senor year, so all you fools who worry about what round Tebow will go in, need to start worrying about how not to be embarrassed in Jacksonvile again.

Hey ugarulz44,

There have been some stand-up statements in this otherwise lame thread and yours is the best. Let those without sin cast the first stone. We all love our team; we should respect the other. MS and KM should go on to the NFL and make a good living. TT needs another year. TT gets huge media attention, just as our president elect did not long ago when but a few knew who he was. TT brings the gators hope, we uf grads like that. BO brings America hope. God bless America.
