Fulmer out at Tennessee
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Longtime Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer has reportedly agreed to step down after the end of the 2008 football season. Fulmer, himself a former Vols player, has coached Tennessee for 17 straight seasons but this year is suffering through a season in which his team is 3-6, last losing to South Carolina Nov. 1.
Who do you see taking over at Tennessee once Fulmer is gone? How will his exit affect the Vols’ SEC rivals, including Georgia, Alabama and Florida? Do you expect a slew of recruits to decommit from Tennessee?

While I hat to see him go, I think that it is time. I do hope that he decides to stay at UT in some capacity (AD, etc). I have been hearing rumors that the school may be interested in Paul Johnson. That would be a great selection if we could get him. The drop back passer is beginning to be to predictable.

This has been coming for the last few seasons. Positives for UT are the new coach and new philosphies( UGA, FLA, ALA all have to adjust to new scheme).Plus any first year coach will rally fan base as well as provided excitement to recruits. I think UT goes offensive in its search, Lane Kiffin, Mike Leach, are names to consider. If they go Defensive, I bet it is a NFL name that comes aboard, Marvin Lewis or Robert Nunn. The SEC East just got a little tougher. CMR better evaluate OC Bobo and DC Martinez,as UT will definitely be better real soon!

I agree with Dan, PLEASE HIRE MIKE BOBO and his read-it-like-a-book play action, starring the screen pass and the draw play.
Meanwhile, I think Muschamp may be the most likely candidate. I doubt Cutcliffe will Duke so quickly, and I speculate Tenn may want to change from the old guard. I also doubt they will pull away a coach from an SEC rival, eg Spurrier. Most are either established where they are or too new to up and leave so quickly.

I would think that TN will lose some recruits if none of the staff is retained. Coming from a Gator, TN needs to look for a coach from a good program, but not a Stoops or Brown. If you’re starting over, start with a good foundation like Bruce pearl in BBall. Look what he’s done. We took a chance on Meyer and Donovan and it’s worked out pretty well. Maybe Graham from Tulsa.

Cutcliffe will be the new guy at Tennessee for two reasons: (1) the Vols win when he’s there and (2) they seem to collapse everytime he goes to another school. Phil Fulmer will more than likely give his blessing to this move. Don’t look for any young, somewhere in the future, young assistant to get this job. Coaching in the SEC East is not good on the job training. Look for T. Tuberville at Auburn to resign at season’s end and take over at Clemson.

It is definitely time for Phil to turn over the HC reigns, but I’ll bet he stays on as some sort of consultant/recruiter. They’ll most likely look for a young gun like Kiffen or Peterson. Some recruits will decommit, but most will stay if they land a good name with a good philosophy.

I have been hearing rumors for a while about Cutcliff being interested. I think they should go for an offesive minded coach simply because they have a good defensive coordinator in Chavis…He has the players in line to be really good on defense. Will Muschamp(Texas); will be great because of the energy he brings to the sidelines. Kirby Smart(BAMA) is another name that is hot right now. I personally dont care who they bring in aslong as they get rid of that horrible OC from Richmond. They also need certified recruiter Trroper Taylor was excellent in bringing in some of the nations top talents.

UT will “definitely,” get better real soon? Got some lottery numbers for us? How about the location of the Ark of the Covenant?
UT may get better, or they may get worse. That’s why they conduct the interviews, hire the coaches, recruit the players and play the games.
But keep your chin up, Ken. Pitchers and catchers report in four months and change.

i’m a lifelong auburn fan, but i’m afraid that tuberville will be gone as well. should he be? i think he’s a wonderful coach with a pretty good record, he just had a bad year. the QB selection(s) over the past 5 years, however, have been less-than-stellar. i thought this year we could rebound from the brandon cox era but the 2 guys that have thrown this year are completely inadequate. i thought a QB was supposed to actually throw the ball?

I would say Will Muschamp if they are interested in getting the best coach available. He could rebuild that program back to where Fulmer had it about 8-9 years ago. I too doubt Cutcliff leaves Duke so early. If not Muschamp, then look for them to go to a mid conference and steal a good coach. The only SEC coach that I would think they could pry away would be Bobby Johnson at Vandy. He is never going to win there and the UT job could be enticing. In any choice, the outlook for the next 2 years is UGA and UF will be competing against each other for the SEC East. UT should be back by year 3 and make it a horse race again.

By DC Falcon Fan
November 3, 2008 1:12 PM | Link to this
The funny thing about this college season is if Bobby Petrino had stuck to his initial weasely plan he would have stuck with the Falcons for 2 or 3 seasons then bolted for a sweetheart deal with a major program. But due to the Michael Vick fiasco and the fact he is spineless, he escaped under the cover of darkness a year earlier than he had wanted to basically any school that would give him a lot of money. So while he is now the coach of an Arkansas program that will not compete with Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida, etc..in the present or near future there are two major openings (Clemson, Tennessee) possibly three (Auburn) this season old Bobby is stuck in Fayetteville. But Tennessee is so desperate to win that they might go after him….

On another note….the next one to go should be UGA DC Willie Martinez. 3 of the of the 4 Florida games in which he has been the DC, he has shown to not have the defense ready to play. No pressure and it was basically zone coverage the whole game. That crap needs to stop. Take a page from Muschamp, he knows how to stop the Florida offense. Bottom line is he needs to go. I am willing to give Mike Bobo the benefit of the doubt because it looks like Stafford is too stubborn and is going to throw the ball. We have one of the best RBs in the conference and yet we choose to pass it way to often. Looks like the coaches need a little of Tuberville telling them that in the SEC you have to run the ball. Also I am not going to even start on coach Richt. UGA is in much better shape under him than they were under Goff or Donnan. I am not even going to start on him.

One thing is that we do not want Steve Spurrier in TN. Why would we want someone that is ashamed of where he was born and raised? He was invited back to his old high school to speak to the students and he refused to come and the only excuse he gave is that he hated Tennessee. He has his head so far up his own a$$ all he smells is himself.

I am an Auburn Tiger through and through. I like Tuberville, he’s a risk taker, and for most of his tenure, it’s paid off…this year, is the GIANT exception. But, his contract and staff contract was just renewed, any buyout for AU would be pretty costly…of course, losing good recruits, and revenues, could be even more costly. It’s too bad…he’s had a good run until this year. Losing Al Borgess was the first of the major bad decisions.

You’d think with Auburn’s dismal season that Tuberville would be headed for the door. And, he very well may be. However, he’s under contract until 2013 and the buyout this year is $6 million — ouch! Conversely, if he quits, he and/or his new employers would owe Auburn $6 million. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out. Roll Tide!

Wow…
First, I do feel bad for the UT folks. It is not fun watching your program struggle and the guy won them a National Championship.
I think they go after the Texas Tech Coach and Muschamp ends up at Auburn. May as well restart the history of the two schools using the other school’s talent to win.
And for you idiots who claim to be Dawg fans busting on the Offensive and Defensive Coordinators. Your the same clowns who were singing their praises last year.
This team simply wasn’t deep enough to take losses on the offensive and defensive line and it caught up with us in two games. Fact is, if Moreno and Stafford were to stay, then you would see a team ready to contend for the SEC Championship.
I’ll take CMR over anyone else in the country. He is the perfect coach for UGA.
To the Florida folks. You were the better team. We were out coached and out played. Just like you were last year. See you next November in JAX. (Game should stay right where it is)… There isn’t another venue like it - win or lose.

Guys, please with the stop with the criticism of UGA coaching staff. Remember Ray Goff & Jim Donnan? Ya’ll are way off base here…
Look at it this way…
We play SC, Arizona State, Bama, UT, LSU, UF, and Auburn this year… I think we’ll win out and win our bowl game.. That is 11-2…. Not too shabby with our schedule.
Now at the start of the year I was very optimistic about UGA running the table.. However, it is hard to compete in the toughest conference in football with the injuries we’ve sustained. Especially the offensive line. Now, they have improved and they will all be back next year. That should say something. We just had a run of bad luck.
I hope Stafford and Moreno stays, I don’t see how they could leave with the taste of the Florida game in their mouths.
As a Dawg fan, you know what it is.. There’s always next year….. =(
Just be happy we’re winning 10 a year with some consistency…. Winning 10 games year in and year out in the SEC is a very respectable record. And we’ll continue to have top quality student athletes. Keep your heads up guys, we could be like OSU… Go 12-0 or 11-1 every year and not play anyone.

UT fans know and understand UT football. Pressure had to be applied to the AD to make it happen. The current product did not justify the expenses and they spoke with ticket sales and booster donations(votes). All agree Fulmer is an admirable man, but his time and game style have passed. No he didn’t forget how to coach, or suddenly turn stupid. What he didn’t do was adapt. Unlike Pappa Bowden and JoePa, who are experiencing a “resurgence” in weak conferences, UT plays in the SEC. Hell half the teams in the SEC would be vying for the National Championship if we only had one other team in our conference ranked in the top 20. Does anyone really think Penn State, Ohio State, or FSU wouldn’t get embarresed by a UF, Bama, UGA or LSU? Hell, its darn near impossible getting thru the conference with just 2 losses, much less only 1.
Who ever is next at UT is going to have to compete and recruit against Saban, Miles , Meyer, Richt, and Spurrier. The other option is to move to the ACC and dominate. Good luck to all Vol fans! GO ORANGE!

I’d bet a lot of money it will be Steve Spurrier but think UT will interview plenty of candidates before him because his buyout will be expensive.
Spurrier is from Johnson City (Science Hill HS) and is way passed being fed up with SC. He knows he can recruit the athletes he needs at TN and he also thinks he can own Georgia from there.
I’m a Dawg fan and the way this week (and year has gone), it will be Spurrier. I can feel it in my bones.

That’s as good of a guess as any on here. You all are a bunch of nimrods. Why supposedly reputable publications like the AJC encourage this kind of speculative nonsense is beyond me.

Bobby Petrino - isn’t he always looking for more money and a better deal? What? He just started at Arkansas? How long did he keep the Falcons job?
Seriously, there are some ridiculous suggestions on this board, but the truth of the matter is that there aren’t as many ‘hot-shot’ coaches at smaller schools to go get this year. It’s a terrible year to be looking for a football coach.

What’s funny to me, looking through all these posts, is how all you hicks take swipes at Ohio State. You do recall, Ohio State has 7 National Titles - 7!!! You can say we don’t play anybody, but the Big 10 throughout history has 12 more Nat’l Titles than second most conference, Pac 10. The SEC has only been good for 3 years, and now they’re down again. And the only reason SEC is any good is of the coaches from Big 10 schools: Meyer-OSU, Miles-Michigan, Saban-MSU. It’s not a matter of who you play, it’s a matter of winning the games you play. You people drink way too much Kool-Aid…

All you guys b*** about Willie Martinez and the D at Florida need to remember the offense/special teams put them in pretty bad situations. UF had drives of 1, 10 and 40 yards. Not to mention 2 missed field goals and a missed WIDE OPEN touchdown by Stafford. Without those screw ups by the offense and special teams it is more like a 28-20 game.
Your criticism of Bobo is warranted. screens and draws p** me off.

Richt had better take note. He has fallen into the Dooley trap. When Dooley coached, everybody he played that won fifty percent of their games or better he only won one out of three. Richt has adopted the same attitude. There will never, never, never be a national championship won under him. But the fans at UGA are looking at Saban, Myer, Miles and they are not going to be happy with his mediocrity. He is not going to be able to hang on with his 8,9,or ten win seasons. He has a totally inept coaching staff but he won’t do anything about it and it is going to cost him his job. All is can say is “GOOD RIDDANCE”

Fulmer was kinda behind the times and UGA, UF, BAMA and Auburn passed him in recruiting. Vandy, SC and Ole Miss are not far behind either. Fulmer is not the same coach without Cutcliffe. I think if Cutcliffe gets Fulmer’s blessing he may be back. Cutcliffe got a raw deal from Ole Miss. Tenn has great tradition and wonderful fan support. A lot will be expected of who ever takes over. Tuberville may be gone at Auburn too. If UGA and BAMA win big against the tigers he is in big trouble. Say what you want to about Saban, the man can recruit and he sure can coach. As far our dawgs. I think Richt needs to evaluate his coaching staff. We might need a change on defense. Coach WM does not seem to have his defense up for big games for some reason. We are undisciplined and miss assignments. How many times this year have we had to call timeouts on special teams because we did not have the right or enough players on the field? I love Coach Richt, he is the man for our program. 79-21 in 7 years and he has our team in consideration for the conference championship every year. Maybe our team is not as good as we thought? A very young o-line and a defense that is just missing that one special player or vocal leader? I do not think we have the senior leadership that we are all used to. If we go 11-2 and finish in the top ten with our schedule we still have a lot to be thankful for. It could be worse you know? Look at UT, Auburn and Clemson. To all of those wanting Muschamp, remember we beat LSU and look what Texas Tech did to his defense. Go Dawgs

Here are the stats on Big 10 v. SEC
Big 10 has under .500 record against Bama, Auburn, Florida, UGA, LSU and UT. Ohio State hasn’t beaten an SEC team since 1988, when they squeaked by LSU in Columbus. Overall, OSU is 7 - 13 against SEC teams. Since 1988:
1989 L Auburn 31-14
1993 L Georgia 21-14
1995 L Alabama 24-17
1996 L Tennessee 20-14 (Double owweee)
2001 L So. Carolina 24-7
2002 L So. Carolina 31-28
2007 L Florida 41-14 (Total humiliation / Owned / B*** Slapped)
2008 L LSU 38-24 (Close to Total humiliation)
You better pray PSU doesn’t get UGA, LSU or Florida for their bowl opponent. By the way, where’s Michigan bowling this year?

C- the not-so-lovely state of Ohio is full of hicks; especially in the center of the state where The Ohio State Cow College is located. And Michigan, who owns your super-sized Community College in the overall football series, has 11 MNCs.
The State Penn, who plays nobody, will be this year’s osu when it takes a serious beatdown from a SEC or Big 12 title team in the BCS Title Game.

Muschamp will definitely take the Clempson HC job before he takes the one in Appalachia. He would face little competition from south carolina for in-state recruits and FL and GA are close by. Plus, it will much easier to build a dominant football program in the ACC than it would be to build one in the SEC.

I really don’t think he deserves to have to step down in the first place. He put that program on the map, but as you know, that doesn’t matter in the SEC nowadays. Spurrier didn’t even get an invite back to Florida and everyone expects people to have continued success like the Bear. The SEC is rough, but prestigious

C - The Big Ten was a great football conference over 20 years ago. The SEC is more dominant now and I predict that Bama will do to PSU what Florida and LSU did to Ohio State the last 2 years. Yes Ohio State has 7 National Titles, but only 1 in the last 30 years. The SEC has 9 in the same time frame and should have had a 10th play for the title in 04(Auburn). So your Kool-Aid about the SEC only being good for three years in downright laughable. Actually, if you want to get all technical, since 1936, the SEC has one more national championship than the Big 10 does. Both are great conferences, but the SEC is far superior in recent years.
Now back to the coaches. I don’t think Tuberville will be fired. One bad year is not going to get him the ax. As for Fulmer, his time was coming. Also Dawg1, I am huge dawgs fan. I have never once claimed Martinez doing anything right. In fact, I was calling for his head after the WV debacle in 2005 and again after the Bama game this year. He is not a great coach. Yes we are less talented this year due to the injuries and the young DL. But…..Martinez’s track record speaks for itself. I just don’t see the intensity in the play calling with him as DC as compared to when VanGorder was here. You saw the defense hustle on every down and play with intensity when he coached. Willie Martinez’s defense only play great when it seems coach Richt has to light a fire in his arse about the way they played in a loss. Look at the UT game this year. That was probably the best the defense has looked all year. I almost bet they play really good against Kentucky too. I am just saying its time to replace him and light a fire under the defense. Coach Richt is fine. I am not as stupid as others to call for his head. I remember the Goff and Donnan days. Bobo is doing fine as well. The offense is averaging over 30+ points per game and has been over 40 points some 7 times since he has been the OC. When VanGorder was DC, I can only recall one game where a team scored more than 30 points against the dawgs and that was LSU in the SECCG in 03. However, the defenses coached by Martinez have given up 30+ points 9 times and counting. It could be said that the talent that coach Martinez has had is superior to that of what Coach Van Gorder had. Judging by that and his defense giving up a total of 90 points in two loses and another 38 in a win is more than cause for concern and should end with his firing.

Being a TarHeel, I get a little queasy when I hear “Butch Davis”. It’s taken us years to recover after the glory days of Mack Brown ended. Brown took the money and ran to Texas, but there’s no doubt about his coaching ability. Ditto Butch Davis. Maybe the improving year Carolina and most of the ACC is having will trump the allure of big alumni bucks at UT.

Coach Richt is second to none at Georgia. Those that think otherwise haven’t a clue. Coach Richt made a gamble on plays such as the onside kick. If it worked, it would have been a genius-at-hand. A week ago, Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson were all but proposing to Stafford. He had a bad game, he isn’t perfect. As for the dropped passes, a receiver can make a quarterback look good or look bad (see Chandler, Tripp)
Anyhow, If Bobo left, it would be nice to hire Hatcher to be the OC. If Martinez left, good luck coaxing Mushchamp to leave. He’s locked a head coach gig somewhere, really wherever he wants right now. I’d say Kirby Smart, but he threw one too many ping-pong paddles across Baxter street during his college days. This is my list.
Patrick Nix-OC Miami. He was a Techie and hates the Bulldogs enough to be well received in Knoxville. Charlie Strong-DC South Carolina (I think that is where he’s at.) He is long overdue for a shot. Bud Foster-DC VaTech Another overdue. Sly Croom-Head Coach at Miss State (If they run him off)-Just another way he could stick it to Bama for not giving him a shot. Brett Farve-QB NY Jets Closer to Mississippi than the Bronx. If they pulled that off, I swear I’d cry. We all know this one isn’t happening though. Jon Tenuta-Co-DC Notre Dame. At least he would have the talent to work with at UT. We all know they are saving this job for Payton Manning This will happen, when he gets tired of taking licks in the NFL, one of the greatest quarterbacks ever will come back to coach at his alma mater. Until then, UT could use cardboard dummies to coach. After all, it got them through the past two years.
Cutcliffe won’t bail on Duke. They should have hired him last year when someone screwed up the memo and gave Fulmer an extension.
Spurrier might just do it to make everyone mad at him. He enjoys it that way. I don’t know how the UT fans would handle that culture shock though.

I agree with others in sayint there are some ridiculous names being thrown out on this board lol. Mark Richt, Paul Johnson, Steve Spurrier, & Butch Davis aren’t leaving their respective schools to coach at UT right now. David Cutcliffe makes sense if they can afford to pull him from Duke given Fulmer’s buyout. Lane Kiffin will probably stay on the west coast & take the Washington job (if Mike Leach doesn’t). Will Muschamp and Mike Leach are likely top candidates for UT, as well as almost every other major opening. Gary Patterson (TCU) and Chris Peterson (Boise St) might be candidates also.

Hey everyone… hope nobody minds me doing this, but the Gainesville Sun (media outlet that covers UF sports) just released an interesting article that I’d like to share. It is written by Pat Dooley and regards Steve Spurrier’s reaction to Fulmer’s resignation. So, without further ado, here it is:
Two days after his South Carolina team beat Tennessee, Steve Spurrier had nothing but nice things to say about the coach he sent packing.
Phillip Fulmer and the University of Tennessee reached an agreement that will pay Fulmer $6 million over four years as a buyout of the contract that was extended before this season. The deal was reached less than 48 hours after the Vols were beaten by South Carolina 27-6.
“He had a wonderful career,” Spurrier told The Sun. “I read the other day he’s spent 35 straight years at Tennessee as a player, graduate assistant and coach. Thirty-five years, that’s a good run.
“He’s a good guy. I talked to him before the game. Not about that. But we talked. We never talked before the game when I was at Florida. We’re a little more friendlier here. We can’t score 50 on anybody, so we don’t have too many people mad at us.”
Unless Fulmer surfaces elsewhere, the records for the Gator coaches against the Tennessee coach:
Spurrier 7-3 at UF, 2-2 at USC.
Ron Zook 1-2.
Urban Meyer 4-0,
Fulmer’s record against the Gators was 5-12 and the Vols lost six of the last eight at home to the Gators under Fulmer.
“Some people will say it’s sad that he couldn’t go out on his own terms but if you retire, you don’t hit the lottery,” Spurrier said. “You could say he hit the lottery after getting that contract extension. Now he gets the money and he doesn’t have to go through any more crap, everybody after him.”
End
I felt the need to post this because of the public perception of hatred between Fulmer and Spurrier… I believe that this sets the record straight. And as a Gator, I not only grew up with Spurrier’s Gators, but Fulmer’s Vols, who at the time were the biggest rivals we had on the schedule. We have played some great games (my personal favorite UF/UT moment was in our championship season in ‘96 where Spurrier opted to go for it on 4th-and-6 from the TN 45 yard line on UF’s opening possession… instead of running a short route to simply convert the 4th down, Wuerffel dropped back and heaved the ball to a wide open Reidel Anthony for a touchdown) and many great players have played hard for Coach Fulmer. I think it would serve everyone well to take a moment to recognize the great job Fulmer did and the contribution he has made over the years to both Tennessee and SEC football. I believe that a change had to be made, what with the slow, yet steady decline of the UT football program over the last five or so years (despite last year’s East division crown), but whether you’re a Vol, Gator, or Dawg fan, you have to respect Fulmer.
Don’t fret Vols fans… brighter days are ahead. UT has too much pride and too much great tradition to go away that quietly. The officials at UT will put someone there that belongs there and a winning tradition will be restored. Until that time… God bless and go Gators!

Ohio ST. may have a lot of NC, but how many were when they only played in the Rose Bowl? The Big Ten for the most part has always been a two team conference between OSU and MICH. Every now and then you can throw another team in the mix. The Buckeyes never played a tough foe out of conference schedule and many of those mythical championships were when there was none or very limited televisions. Sometimes the only two winning teams they played were Michigan and who ever they played in the Rose Bowl. Same goes for USC. Most of the press was more familiar with the “name” schools. The SEC is a much tougher conference consistantly than the Big Ten.

As the name suggests, I’m not a Tennessee fan, but I do have loads of respect for UT. I would love to see them land a young coach like Will Muschamp at Texas. He has so much energy and passion. I know Vols fans like the idea of adding an offensive coach, but Muschamp would bring in a top offensive coach to run the offense. He’s one of the hottest names in coaching right now and could lure in the recruits nationally. That’s something that Phil Fulmer hasn’t been able to do very well lately.

UT’s problem this season was their offense. They should have never tried to make the switch to the spread. UT is known for being a physical, downhill running football team and the switch to the spread has cost Fulmer his job. Hope things go well for him with whatever he chooses to do next.
Cutcliffe won’t take the job b/c of his friendship with Fulmer.

Norm Chow would be a solid natural pick. Chow worked with the Titans, was chief architect of USC’s latest rise to respectability, and is currently UCLA’s offensive coordinator. Given UT’s inexperience at quarterback, Chow would be just what the VOLS need since his strong suit is developing QB’s. UT would also be on the cutting edge by giving an Asian gentleman the chance to run a SEC program.

Lots of STRONG rumors out there that the next coach of the Vols will be none other than “Joe The Plumber”. He’s gonna get in there and snake UT’s pipes, flush out the bad and give them a fresh start.

Brad,
Couldn’t remember where Strong was…That was why I put “I think,” in the parenthesis. I thought he followed Spurrier, but honestly, his background really doesn’t interest me. He is at one of those schools that we love to hate, that would make him a good fit at Tennessee.
I just thought he needs a shot at a head gig. I’m not black, so this isn’t about race, he just does a fine job wherever he is at.
Go Dawgs…I’d still rather be a Gator Hater, any day.

Randy Sanders is the perfect pick. He will bring a new look to the Vols. How about JOHN MCCAIN! Unfortunately he will be looking for something to do later today. He does have many years of leadership and he did survive a prisoner of war camp so he could make it in “Rocky Flop”. I think McCain and Sanders are a perfect fit. Both are at the end of their careers.
