Jackets enter the polls
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia Tech cracked the Top 25 polls for the first time this season after winning at Clemson, 21-17.
The Jackets also catapulted into the first BCS standings, entering at No. 18.
Coach Paul Johnson has guided the Jackets to a 3-1 record in the ACC Coastal Division and 6-1 overall.
Did you expect early success from coach Johnson? Or has this ranking come too late in the season?
How do you expect the season to play out?

were nnumber 18 right now and if we take care of business the rest of the way in the ACC, assuming college football stays college football and half the top 25 loses every week, we will be able to crack the top 10 by the time the UGA game comes around
i mean IF we can beat UVA, FSU, UNC, miami… which as this point we should be in all games with a chance to win all 4 we will probably win the coastal but even if we dont win the coastal we could still be 10-1 going into the UGA game and that would give us a legit shot to be an at-large for the BCS
sounds crazy i no but im just really excited to watch how the last half of the season ends
havent been this excited about tech football in a LONG TIME

Definitely a mixed blessing to be ranked. The team deserves it, but it can kind of put a target on your back.
I am very concerned about Jahi’s health. He has been playing great all year; he has been one of our most consistent open field tacklers. And of course the offensive line continues to struggle. I think it is a little late in the season to expect quantum improvements from that group.
I really see this team going at least 9-3. But I don’t think 11-1 is out of the realm of possibility. When a team has a coach like CPJ, all games are winnable.

Here’s a question that may be causing a little tightness in the collective chests of the Dawg fans. If UGA stumbles next weekend in Baton Rouge (very tough game), and Tech takes care of business at home against UVA (we should be about a one TD favorite), who will be rated higher in the polls?
UGA is currently rated #8 with one loss. A loss to LSU would give them 2. How far would the pollsters be willing to drop them after a road loss in Baton Rouge.
Tech is #21 with one loss. Would a Tech win move us up enough to jump the pups in the polls?
It’s not an unlikely scenario. I honestly think that UGA has a better team than LSU, but going into Baton Rouge is like going into Clemson. You have to respect the home team even when they are down.
Tech is not a lock over UVA. UVA is very unpredictable. Tech is just a little over a week past a nail-biter against a D-1AA team. We had to come back in the 4th quarter after blowing an 11-point lead yesterday. However, Tech has been more consistent than UVA and WILL be at home.
I just love listening to the pup fans howl. It would be the ultimate pointy stick to jab them with at this point if we were to find ourselves ahead of them in the polls, especially given their lofty preseason expectations.
Fun to speculate.

BTW, the pups won’t play at home again until the Tech game. Road games in Baton Rouge, Jacksonville (supposedly a neutral site), Auburn, and Lexington await them before they return to Athens. Florida looked awesome against LSU, but the pups are definitely a better team than LSU, AU, and UK. But that’s a tough gauntlet to have to run for ANY team.
On the other hand, Tech only faces one road game before the UGA game (that in Chapel Hill). Our toughest road games (Chestnut Hill, Blacksburg, and Clemson are behind us). UVA, FSU and Miami are all very talented squads, but I like the fact that we have them all at our house.

I am glad to see the early success CPJ is having. Based on his personality so far, I don’t think he’ll let this get to his head, which is what gives me the warm and fuzzy feeling about Tech’s direction.
I agree that the team needs to stay focused on the task at hand. But also I think the players should live it up a little bit - cause we can all agree they deserve it. Tomorrow it’s back to work.

There is no way Tech should be ranked in the top 25. They must have run out of other 6-1 teams. Look who Tech has played. Clemson was without a coach and fumbled 5 times or Tech would have lost for sure. This gimmick of an offense has already been exposed. I do not see Tech winning any more games this year. After the next 5 losses, Tech fans will be asking for the firing of CPJ. And need I say GARDNER-WEBB??? Wow, now that was embarrassing.

GT85. Tech is overachieving this year, given new coach and system. 13th grade in Athens is supposed to be primed to win, given all that talent. Your coaching staff isn’t coaching them up, they’re just trying to “out-athlete” other teams and they are just getting by.

Please don’t get me wrong, Paul Johnson is the right man for the Tech job. BUT, I would like to see a little more Jaybo Shaw. Shaw gets the option moving quicker than Nesbitt. Shaw seems to have a better idea of when to pitch and when not to pitch. Nesbitt got credit for 24 carries on Saturday and on many of his option runs he had no intention of pitching the ball. Shaw is by far the more accurate passer. Tech seems to burn more clock with drives with Shaw at QB giving the defense more rest. With Clemson having 6 turnovers this should have been a 30 point blow-out. Tech’s defense is as good as there is, but they can’t be expected to be on the field all day. Time consuming drives by the option offense are essential to success. Shaw deserves to get a chance show he can put teams away just as he did vs Miss. St.a and Duke. Asst. Bohannon said Nesbitt had been big in several wins. Take away Jax State, and it’s only Boston College with 17 points from the offense with Nesbitt. Tech’s offense only scored 14 points at Clemson. I’m all behind Paul Johnson, but I’d like to see Jaybo Shaw get more playing time and try to generate more points to go with our tough defense.

This is a great season, great athletes, coached up by a great coach! Now that we’re ranked, though, that must not cause things to get out focus. If the Yellow Jackets don’t keep pushing this week, Virginia will ruin our homecoming. They’ve got Cedric Peerman back in the lineup, and he’s a gamebreaker.

Sting, wouldn’t that just be icing on the cake!? Even after our loss to VT, I said we would go 11-1. Glad to see the team hasn’t let me down. If they keep their mind into the task at hand - one team at a time - UVA next - we should do just fine! Amazing what Johnson has done with essentially the same players Chan had - a testament to how good he is and how great we will become!

Mixed feelings here. I know that you have to be ranked to get the attention to start to move up. I think we have been under the radar as long as we possibly could be to have a chance to get in the Top Ten this season.
The propblem is that now you have that tarket on your back. Before we had the motivation to prove something. I think that CPJ is a good enough coach to keep them in it. GWU should prove to them that they are never safe.

Your quest to Miami? Lol. Have you not watched Texas, Oklahoma, Penn St or USC play any games lately? they are in a whole other stratosphere when compared to UGA. I mean USC won 69-0 on the road! Your team is nowhere near those teams. I find it funny you would make all those comments before you go to LSU. Make them after you go to LSU and win.

Tech fans need to take this in stride and not be too concerned about rankings or an at-large birth BCS birth. The key for Tech is to take 3 of 4 going into the UGA game. I think it’s unrealistic to think we’ll be 10-1 going into Athens. I think we should beat UNC and UVA, but Miami and FSU could be tough. While they’re not the U and FSU of old they still have a ton of speed and ton of atheletes. I would take 9-2 going into UGA.

” To Look folks ” with all do respect I dont think coach P.J. would “take going 9-2going into athens” which is why we love him. He doesnt settle for half a**. He pushes his players to perfection and settles for nothing else. Yes we should be realistic but we should not settle for anything less than perfection. I understand your point, but i just wanted to point out this trait in coach P.J. which has made GT football exciting again.

How can you compare GT going on the road into Death Valley and Georgia going on the road into Baton Rouge THIS YEAR or any year? Clemson is having a disasterous season UNRANKED with a 3-4 record (just having lost its head coach), while LSU is the reigning FBS National Champion and ranked #11 with a 5-1 record. You are absolutely insane. That must be some good crack your smokin’.

We are winning “ugly”, but we ARE WINNING!” The development of our new offense got side-tracked by our QBsinjuries, but were back on track now and can expect incremental improvement. Meanwhile, WE ARE LEARNING HOW TO WIN. And this is more important than the offensive development.
Several posts above have mentioned “winning five in a row will be virtually impossible”, but they fail to realize we are worrying more about OUR team than we are FIVE opponents. As CPJ says, “Lets get our team playing well, and the games will take care of themselves - ONE AT A TIME." Nothing counts but the next game. Lets just keep on winning as we learn how to put bigger scores up.

I just wanted to stop by and congratulate the Jackets on their #18 ranking. I am obviously a dog fan, but have a lot of respect for what you guys are doing down there in Atlanta. 6-1 is an impressive start, and I hope you guys carry on the fantastic play. You have an all-american defensive line, and a solid all around defense. The offense looks like it is coming around. I am thankful that UGA has a bye week to prepare for it. Good luck on the rest of the season and we will see you in Athens on Nov. 29th. Go Dawgs!

GT is a solid team. As long as we remain focused on each upcoming game, we’ll be OK. The GW game may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. We CAN win every game. We CAN lose every game. Denver Dawg,
Just like a pup not to read the whole comment and to take it out of context.
First, I said that I thought that UGA has a better team than LSU.
Second, I didn’t make ANY comparison between LSU and Clemson THIS year.
The comment, in context, was that they are traditionally tough places to play even when the home team is having a down year (e.g., Clemson this year).
Having put this into context, YOU are the one showing just how childish and moronic that you are. First, this is a TECH BLOG that you are trolling looking for stuff to pick on. Second, as pointed out above, like normal, you take the comments out of context. Third, my whole post was very conciliatory towards the pups.
Finally, just like I said, it’s fun to listen to you idiots howl!!!!!

I’m happy to see that Tech finally earned their way into the rankings. I was confident that if they kept on winning, that they would eventually be noticed and taken seriously. The team just needs to stay focused on one game at a time and keep winning. I’m happy to see that Paul Johnson’s team is playing to win, not just playing it safe and trying not to lose like in the previous years. It would be nice to think about winning another National Championship, but I think realistically the first thing Tech needs to focus on is winning their division in the ACC and making it to the ACC Championship game. One game at a time Tech, just like you did in 1990!
Frankly, I think our chances of winning the NC this year are just about the same as UGA’s - slim to none for both of us! There’s too many other good teams ahead of both teams in the polls. It’s going to take winning all your games and a lot of LUCK concerning the things neither team can truly control - the whims of the pollsters or the w-l records of teams not on our schedule. The next five games are all that UGA and Tech can worry about. I make no predictions who will win the last regular game on our schedules, but I think Tech has a fighting chance this year. GO JACKETS! STING ‘EM ! THWG!

Hey GTWHo?
Noone on this blog cares about your opinion. Dawg fans need to quit worrying about the size of Tech’s stadium and the number of fans that fill it every week. The last time I checked, those things aren’t factored into the BCS poll. It’s what happens on the field that counts.

The problem is that we are fully capable of losing every game left on the schedule. We’re also capable of winning every game on the schedule with the possible exception of UGA. The teams we’re playing have a very similar talent levels to each other and to us. Also, like Tech, their level of play has been eratic all year, which makes it hard to predict which team will show up on both sides. Given all that I’ll hope we finish 11-1 and guess that we finish either 9-3 or 8-4

FYI, I have always been a TECH fan. I have supported the team in good years and bad like I suspect that many of the TECH fans here do. Yes, I have supported them even in the seven years that they have lost to UGA. May I remind you that with the exception of the dreaded 51-7 game and last year, the margin of victory has been quite close - within 3 points in many games. BTW, I was talking about THIS year. It IS what happens on the field this year that counts now. This season still has 5 games to go for both schools. If anyone deserves ridicule, it is the delusional UGA fans that thought their beloved Dawgs would run the table and stay #1 throughout the entire year. They’re a good team, but they’re not great yet. Beat LSU and Florida first before you start barking about UGA’s superiority.

Let’s not get too excited about rankings. We have yet to beat a ranked opponent. Add the fact that the last 2 games weren’t too impressive from an offensive standpoint. Let’s just focus on the Virginia game as I’m sure CPJ is. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year and in all reality it still is. We’ve been fortunate that the ACC isn’t terribly strong and CPJ has done a tremendous job with the talent he has. The weeks ahead will consistently get tougher and the Jackets will have to improve dramatically before we can talk about winning the ACC and beating UGA. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Yes, it is great that GT is ranked. As I have said in many post this season, being ranked gives GT more exposure during the week and weekends because the teams that get talked about the most are the Top 25 teams. GT obviously needs to stay focused and Win one week at a time. Now I see the benefit of the GW game. GOD is AWESOME. We will never overlook another team this year. Finishing in the Top 10 will do wonders for the program and it will increase our chances of returning to #1 in the upcoming years. Isn’t it funny how we keep winning but some our doubters keep pushing the envelope of ‘when I will start believing” farther and farther down the schedule. Wow, what kind of fan waits until the end of the season to see that a team wins all of its games to then say that they believe in that team. Not a Fan at all. There are people that make things happen (GT Football Team and True Fans): people that watch things happen ( Fake Fans); and people that don’t know what happend ( Bandwagonners and UGA Fans)
