How much will you miss Munson?

The legendary voice of the Georgia Bulldogs has gone silent.

Larry Munson will announce that he will no longer call the play-by-play for Georgia football games.

He began calling Georgia football games in 1966.

Munson, 85, had been in failing health, and had stopped going on the road with the Bulldogs last season.

What are your favorite Munson moments? What will miss most and who should replace him on Saturday broadcasts?

I have listened to Larry Legend since ‘66… His “Let me paint the picture” will be missed.. Larry is one of the last of a breed. The sportscasters that had to bring it to you as there was very little or no TV…

From “Run Lindsey run” to “look at the sUGAr falling from the sky” to Butler’s 60 yarder, to the “Hob nail boot”… I know I have missed many others “Applebee to Washington”….

Larry’s time has passed… But he will always be remembered… FONDLY!!!

Larry, we love you!!

I grew up hearing Ga football on the radio as my father attended college and law school there and thus him being a big fan got my to loving it also. I believe Ed Thelious (sp) was before Larry. However it was Larry and his excitement for the game and telling the glories of Ga’s football story that helped me to love Ga football. His raspy voice and the detail he would give and the excited at the right times. Whoa, I know at other schools there might have been good annoucers but Larry was in a league of his own. Yes, my father has long since gone but Larry has always brought back fond memories of listening to everyone from Stanfield, Payne, Preston Ridelhubber to Hershal, Belue till today. I add my thanks and best wishes to your retirement!!!

Larry, my friend….

What can I say. I was a child of 7 years old when you took over the announcing duties for the Dawgs back in 1966. I have listened to you every year that you have called the games. Only you could make it seem like every person listening to you was actually on the sideline. You have deserved this rest for sometime now but please know that you played a HUGE part in my growing up and continuing to be a Bulldog fan. Larry, YOU ARE THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA BULLDOGS!

God’s Speed be with you!

I think “radio announcer for a college or pro sports team” is the hardest industry to break into in America. Once in, not many people stay fewer than, oh, 35 years. Look around the Southeast at people like Larry, Woody Durham at UNC, Bob Harris at Duke, Gene Deckerhoff at FSU, and a slew of others.

Just an observation. Have fun fishing, Larry.

I actually started crying when I read this. It really is the end of an era for Georgia football. Larry will never be replaced. He’s a wonderful person and amazing announcer. When we go to the stadium for games we’ve always brought our headphones just to listen to Larry. Same thing when we watched on tv - we’d turn down the volume on the tv and turn Larry up on the radio to hear him call it. I’m only 30 so I’ve never listened to GA without Larry. He will really be missed. Enjoy your retirement - you deserve it you ole dawg! You will always be loved and remembered as part of UGA.

The thing I will miss most about Larry’s play call is his description of place. What the field looked like, what the sky looked like, what the uniforms looked like. How many people were still on the bridge waiting to get in. That was drama. It was a throwback to a by-gone era of radio that is simply overlooked today, but it really “put you there” at the game, even though you might be halfway across the country listening over the internet or satellite radio…We will really miss you, Larry!

What a sad day for announcing around the country. I loved listening to Munson, his great calls, his homerisms: “Lindsey Scott! Lindsey Scott!”, and his home-spun quotes.

He sounded good when I was listening during the Georgia Southern game, and at least he saw the leap by Moreno, as his last great play.

I would frequently listen from Charleston, SC, on 630 out of Savannah, to hear him describe the games, and I felt like I was there.

Even as a South Carolina fan, he had several great calls. Here is one from the 1993 game, when Brandon Bennett jumped over the pile to beat the Bulldogs.

I think Larry Munson is the watermark all play by play men are measured by. His legacy is secure, and he will be missed. But the bigger question is who replaces him? Like Goff after Dooley, Scott Howard can’t fill those shoes. There are scant few radio people remaining who have the natural knack for painting the picture with their words. There is a fellow down in south Georgia who does games for Thomas County Central that I have listened to several times over the last few years who has ‘it’ and I have always felt has the charisma the Dawgnation expects. Until then, Larry, thank you for all the great memories, friend. You are one of a kind.

Like so many, I knew this day would come, and possibly sooner rather than later. Just as with Skip Carey and the Braves games, Larry’s voice seemed to make Georgia games more enjoyable. I loved the fact that a FM radio station here in Jacksonville was going to broadcast all the games this year, so I knew that I would be able to listen to Larry on my MP3 player while working out, doing yard work, or whatever.

Bulldog broadcasters, I’ll still be behind you and the team 100%. I’ll still listen to the games (and watch them when I can), I’ll still root for my team, and I’ll always bleed red and black. This weekend’s game will be awesome, and I of course can’t wait for the annual trip to my fair city. Jacksonville is ready for you! Go Dawgs!

I will not stoop to the lowest bowels to the inept persons whom felt it necessary to say “the hell with Georgia” and “who???”. Their lack of human intelligence speaks for itself. If i were a TECH fan, and LARRY had called their games, i would not disgrace him for being from the team i can’t stand, but would still thank him for his dedication to the sport and what he meant to radio and his team. As a bulldog fan i can say i am 49, and until this last year, had NEVER heard anyone call a game but Larry. He loves his DAWGS. I have tears in my eyes as i say thank you larry for ALL the memories, their is no replacement. i certainly hope the powers to be in the bulldawg nation, have something a little more special for him than a thank you and goodbye, that would be a total disgrace. Now larry just hunker on down at home, we know you will be a watching!!

What can I say? While we’ve known this day would come for several years now, it’s just not real. Larry is not the end of a period of Georgia football, Larry is the end of an era of broadcasting. Legends look up to him. There are too many memories that come to mind.

Larry, we thank you. We cannot repay you for what you have done. We are thankful that you were our guy while other schools had to settle for lesser voices. UGA has been truly blessed.

My dad took me to my first game in 1965. I can’t remember the first time I listened to Munson, but I can remember so many games in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and into this decade. There are so many fond memories of UGA games with my dad, mom and siblings. My dad introduced me to UGA football and we listened to many games before tv took control, then we just turned down the tv volume and listened. From the living room, to the garage, to the dove fields to the banks of the shore fishing. If it was football season we were listening to Larry Munson. I remember when my dad died on 9/14/2002. UGA barely got by SC 13-7 and how we all said dad would be happy today as Munson finished with how we with stood Carolina’s effort that day to defeat us. I’m sad today because it reminds me of all the great times spent with my dad. We spent a lot of good days together listening to Larry Munson voice of The UGA Bulldawgs. GOD BLESS YOU LARRY.

I hate that Larry isn’t calling Saturday’s game. I was looking forward to that almost as much as the game itself. The sweaty, bug-eyed panic in Munson’s voice on every play, the devotion and love coming through, they were unmistakable and untouchable. God bless him.

As a season ticket holder for many years, I don’t get to hear Larry’s calls as often as I’d like. Headphones have never been my thing. But my wife and I race to the car after the game to beat the traffic (at least that’s what I tell her) and to hear the post-game show. Each week, we get a nice selection of Larry’s best. No one will ever replace Larry Munson, but I’m looking forward to Scott Howard’s turn. He and Zeier have done a great job on the road.

I grew up in Nashville in the 50’s listening to Larry call the Nashville Vols baseball games. Then he did my High School football games, then my college football and basketball games at Vandy. I went into the Navy during Viet Nam and afterwards moved to Atlanta and was here less tha a week and heard the “Voice” doing the Braves games. Lindsay, Herschel, Buck and the list goes on and on. I would even turn the volume down on the television just to hear him. Other than the obvious legendary calls Munson has made over his career (run Lindsay…Look at the Sugar Falling out of the Sky…Hob Nosed Boot, etc.) I will miss the “mundane” comments about the weather, the wind, the students on the “bridge”, switching to 120 second countdown at the 2 minute mark. As a kid, before there were college football games on TV every weekend, there was Larry.

I guess I started listening to Georgia games in about 1972 or so. I was 12 and whatever my dad listened to, I did too.

And every fall Larry was on the air. You knew it was Fall when you heard Larry on the radio calling Georgia games. In fact, when I left Georgia to move to Kansas City to take my first big job fall was so empty - being in a new city, far away from home that I had my brother tape Larry and send the tapes to me. And I would be driving all around the State of Kansas in small towns listening to Larry.

It made the distance seem very short and I made me feel closer to home. I returned in 1989 and always listened to Larry, many times preferring to listen to Larry rather than watch the game.

I have been to many key Georgia games. The National Championship in New Orleans, Dooley’s last Game at the Gator Bowl on New Years Eve against Michigan State and the Central Michigan Game a three weeks ago, Larry’s last game.

I will miss his voice, his passion and yes, even his pessimism when things were not looking so good and even when it wasn’t as bad as he would make it out to be. I was 12 when I started listening to Larry, today I am 46. It sure was quite a party when he was on he air. Fall will never be quite the same.

Thanks Larry Munson!!! You earned your legendary status!!!!

Larry did a tape for our Isaac Litton 25th HS reunion for me to share with our classmates. He was good friends with my across the street neighbor JAck and Flonnie Simpson when I was growing up in Nashville. They worked at the same radio station. I have enjoyed his calls of games all my life it seems and I don’t listen to radio as much during the UGA games as I use to.
