How much will you miss Munson?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The legendary voice of the Georgia Bulldogs has gone silent. Larry Munson will announce that he will no longer call the play-by-play for Georgia football games. He began calling Georgia football games in 1966. Munson, 85 and had been in failing health, quit going on the road with the Bulldogs last season. What are your favorite Munson moments? What will miss most and who should replace him on Saturday broadcasts?

I will miss the old Larry Munson. Truthfully, he has sounded weak and in pain. Sorry, it was overdue.

We knew this day would eventually come; however, if this is correct it is an extremely sad one for all those that bleed red and black. Larry can NEVER be replaced—he is as much an irreplaceable piece of the UGA fabric as Vince Dooley and Herschel Walker. I just hope Larry is doing OK and can enjoy following the Dawgs from the sidelines.

Larry Munson has been the one constant in Georgia football since I was a kid. He is a direct link back to my youth, and as such I will miss hearing him call the UGA games a great deal!
We all knew in the past few years that any game could be his last…so I have definitely listened more to the radio of late and treasured hearing his voice. He definitely sounded tired in the first couple of games this season. I hope all is well with him.
Larry Munson will forever be the greatest announcer ever to me.

I haven’t been around long, but I remember listening to Larry Munson when I was a kid. I believe the call for me would have to be 2001 game vs UT.
In the words of Larry munson: “10 Seconds, We’re on their 6. Michael Johnson turned around asked the bench something. And now, Greene makes him lineup on the right in the slot, we have 3 receivers. Tennessee playing what amounts to a 4-4, Fake, and there’s somebody Touchdown! My God a Touchdown! We threw it to Haynes. We just stuffed them with five seconds left! My God almighty, did you see what he did! David Greene just straightened up and we snuck the fullback over! Haynes is keeping the ball! Haynes is come running all the way across to the bench. We just dumped it over 26-24. We just stepped on their face with a hobnailed boot and broke their nose. We just crushed their faces!”
God Bless Ya Larry. Have a Great Time Fishing!

It’s a sad day for those of us for whom Munson is the voice of Georgia football.
My favorite Munson call is one you never hear anymore: Lindsey’s Scott’s 99-yard kickoff return to begin the second half of the 1978 LSU game in Baton Rouge. Munson’s description was absolutely electric.
Thanks for 43 great years, Larry!

It’s bittersweet, but a bit overdue. He’ll be missed mainly because of all of the memories his voice conjures up. But truth be told, he won’t be missed by anyone that wants to listen to a game and be able to get a sense of what’s actually happening as it occurs. He just hasn’t been able to deliver that for several years now. Thanks for the memories Larry. God bless.

Larry is woven into the fabric of Georgia Football. He has given us tremendous pleasure and memories over the years. We will definitely miss his spontaneous enthusiasm for the big play. Larry should stay in the booth until HE says he is ready to step down - period. As long as this is his decision, I’m OK with it. Thank you, Larry, for 42 glorious years as the Voice of the Georgia Bulldogs!!

His best, in my opinion:
“We’re on the 19, you gotta get to the 4 for the first down. Crowd roars at us, 3 wideouts. Man, we’ve had some shots haven’t we? Snap to David Greene, there he goes in the corner again and we jump up… TOUCHDOWN! OH GOD A TOUCHDOWN! In the corner! With 85 seconds!” UGA vs. Auburn 2002
“Tennessee playing what amounts to a 4-4, Fake, and there’s somebody Touchdown! We just crushed their faces!” UGA vs. Tennessee 2001
“So we’ll try and kick one 100,000 miles, we hold it on our own 49-1/2, 60 yards plus a foot and Butler kicks a long one, Butler kicks a long one, OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!… The stadium is worse than bonkers. Eleven seconds left and I can’t believe what I saw. This is ungodly!” UGA vs. Clemson 1984
“4th and 17, I know I’m asking a lot you guys, but Hunker it down one more time! … Pass into the endzone… and the Dawgs broke it up! They broke it up! … The Dawgs with 42 seconds… I won’t ask you to do that again you guys … 32 seconds, Lastinger up to the line… Lastinger falls back on the 16 … GA students standing and roaring 23, 22, 21 clock running, running. Oh look at the Sugar falling out of the sky! Look at the Sugar falling out of the sky!” UGA vs. Auburn 1982
“Florida in a stand-up five, they may or may not blitz, Belue third down on the 8, in trouble, he got a block behind him going to throw on the run, complete on the 25 to the 30, Lindsay Scott 35, 40, Lindsay Scott 45, 50, 45, 40. … Run Lindsay, 25, 20, 15, 10, Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! … Well, I can’t believe it. 92 yards and Lindsay really got in a foot race I broke my chair. I came right through a chair. A metal steel chair with about a 5 inch cushion, I broke it. The booth came apart. The stadium… well the stadium fell down, now they do have to renovate this place… they’ll have to rebuild it now. This is incredible. You know this game has always been called the World’s Greatest Cocktail Party, do you know what’s gonna happen here tonight, and up at St. Simmons and Jeckyl Island, and all those places where all those dawg people have got those condominiums for 4 days. Man is there going to be some property destroyed tonight! 26-21, Dawgs on top. We were gone. I’d gave up, you did too. We were out of it and gone. Miracle!” UGA vs. Florida 1980

Yes, I know I’m from the opposition, but I still remember Ed Thelenious (and yes I know I don’t know how to spell his name).
In my mind Ed was the best play=by-play football announcer I ever heard. Not a homer, though at times he showed excitement over UGA plays, Ed set up the game so well the listener thought he was actually inside the stadium. A clear, deep voice that announced the formation, the motion, and every aspect of each play as it went forward. IMHO the absolute best! I guess Munson replaced him. and though Munson had many great (possibly scripted) calls of UGA plays, and seemed to moan and cry when the Dogs weren’t doing well or when a call went against them, I still miss the steadiness of Ed’s play calling.
UGA fans will miss Munson, and I sympathize with them, but if you get a chance to hear a tape of Ed Thelenious calling a Georgia game, don’t miss it.
I hope UGA finds a replacement more like Ed than Larry.
Best wishes to Larry in any case. He did a memorable job.

I am stunned. Even thought we knew it was coming. Larry is such an institution with UGA. I was 10 years old when he started doing the games. And growing up in a family of true Bulldog alumni and fans, we always listened to the game while my parents were attending. We enjoyed the discussions when they got home. So I grew up hearing Larry Munson every Saturday in the fall. That is the only way I have ever listened to the game even if it is on TV. You will be missed. I hope you know the enjoyment we have had over the years listening to your commentary’s of the Bulldogs. You always made the games much more exciting and emotional, which made them the best. I can’t pinpoint my favorite call. There have been so many. Maybe the call for Lindsey Scott. It’s hard to pick. And I really don’t know who should replace him, but they better have personality. Have a great retirement Larry. You deserve it.

Tears in my eyes, truly the end of an era. I am glad that my six year old son has grown old enough to hear him voice a few games, but am sad my three year old daughter will not. But this is not about us, it is about Larry, and I wholly agree that he has duly deserved his retirement. I pray that this sudden announcement is not a harbinger that his health has taken a turn for the worse. I further pray that he has many good years ahead of him, duly annointed the #1 dawg fan in the land. We should all be so fortunate that we are able to make such a profound impact on any given profession and community.

I always knew this day would come, but never really believed that it would. Larry, you will always be a part of Georgia football as much as Sinkwich, Trippi, Tarkenton, Belue, Woerner, Scott, Walker and UGA. You are the greatest ever, and your voice on Football Saturdays will be sorely missed in this household and family. As PreachDawg so aptly put it, God Bless Ya, and try not to catch them all!

Munson will ALWAYS be the voice of the Dawgs, in my mind.
I was listening to a game earlier this season and was thinking how much Munson did not sound like himself and was thinking that he should consider calling it a career and a GREAT ONE at that.
Larry Munson will be missed on Saturday’s during College Football season. It will take us long time dawg fans a while to get used to a new voice, but we will always remember Munson and his GREAT game calling ability.
All the best to Larry Munson is his LONG overdue retirement.
Larry, you can now enjoy the dawg games from the other side of the mic as we have every week for years!
Thanks for all of the memories!

Such a sad day. It’s time to say goodbye to an old friend, I guess. But most of us always thought that old friend would never leave.
All of those classic calls mentioned earlier are truly memorable. One that will always ring in my head was UGA/UT 2002. My wife-to-be and I were driving through Tennessee (enemy territory!) on our way to Boone, NC. I had been enduring the UT broadcast all day when it came down to a 4th down for UGA. Instead of punting, we decided to go for it with less than a minute to go.
I started losing the radio signal and searched frantically for the game. I barely found Larry’s voice in time to hear him say “we put the whole school out in front of him.” In my mind I can still see the road and the sun setting at that moment in 2002.
Thank you Larry for that moment and all the others, too.

It hurts. Skip Caray, now Munson? I remember in 82’ when listening to radio was common for football. That was the year of his “Sugar Falling from the Sky” statement. I was on the back porch working with my dad, I was 8. I heard him say that on the radio dropped something I was holding for my dad and ran straight to the TV to see “Sugar falling from the sky”! The great thing about his voice is that it’s associated with so many Georgia memories, but also family/friend memories b/c listening to the games usually meant the game wasn’t on TV and you were sitting around with family/friends either listening or doing stuff on the side (work). Those who never heard him broadcast basketball really missed a treat. I’ll never forget the OT win vs. LSU or the overtime games with Tech. Listening to him describe Shaq. Wow.

As a Tech fan who hates Georgia, Mr Munson will be missed. Larry called the Falcon games from 1987 to 1991. He always brought excitement to the game. There will never be another play-by-play announcer quite like Larry.
Back in the day when very few away games were on television, he brought you into the stadium.
I’ve been listening to Larry for 30 years and there are too many great calls to name.
My all time favorite Larry story though is when my sister-in-law saw him at the Dawgs hotel in Lexington the day of the game in 1994. It was my 38th birthday and I was at home. Janie got Larry to follow her to a payphone (no cell phones back then) and wait while she called my house. She told me to hold on because she had someone who wanted to wish me a happy birthday. In his best game day voice, his first words were, “Brian, is today your birthday”? I almost couldn’t speak and managed “Yeah, Larry”?? He talked to me for a few minutes and I’ll never forget that as long as I live. It was the most memorable birthday present I ever received.
Larry, you’ll always be the greatest and you’ll be missed by the entire Bulldawg Nation! You’ve earned the rest and I wish you all the best!

I am a season ticket holder to Tennessee and was sad when John Ward retired. As a member of the Army currently deployed in Afghanistan, I was previously stationed in GA, TN and NC and if I was out on a Saturday night and UGA was playing, I would try and find the broadcast on the radio just to listen to Larry Munson. The thing that I loved most about Larry Munson is that on many of his most memorable touchdown calls, he never actually used the word “touchdown.” It was his sheer enthusiasm that bled through the airwaves that made him the true legend that he is.

Some of my most fond memories are listening to Larry call the Georgia games. Those mornings listening to the games around the trucks after a dove hunt down home in Southwest Georgia… Jumping and screaming in my dorm as I watched the 2001 Tennessee game with the radio up and the tv muted… I wonder how many times I’ve listened to that call?
Even after becoming a Ramblin’ Wreck I couldn’t bear to miss listening to Larry call the games. Larry, you will be missed! God bless you!

I have tears in my eyes right now. Larry Munson has defined many of my most precious memories from a small child to an adult pushing 40. I grew up just out of Athens, the child of a 1st generation UGA (& college) graduate. TV on mute, Sugar Bowl vs. Notre Dame in 1980….Larry called the NC game. I wll never forget that & so many other precious Larry “Bulldog” moments. When I heard there would be a special at 7:00 on WSB, I was alarmed. Mr. Munson,
I cannot even begin to help you “get the picture” of how you came into my childhood and beyond home during those special football saturdays. Special are the times me and my father, Don Battle, listened to your exciting play by play calls down in Coastal Georgia. I cherish, like I know many others fans do, each and evey one of those precious memories. I can still hear my father screaming over one of the many great plays you called from games past.
I wish I could have listened to your last game for some kind of closure, but time moves on doesn’t it. Thank you Larry for making Georgia Football so enjoyable. Your relaxing tone and insight has made you a fatherly figure to the true Georgia Fan. The end of this era is a true change of passage.
Thank you for all those precious football memories!

Larry,
You are the BEST! You will truly be missed. I only wish we could have won another NC for you! I would love for that to have been your final game! Anyway, May God bless and keep you. You are the biggest DAWG!

I’m a big Dawg fan, but honestly, Larry mentally retired about 10 years ago. It’s completely exasperating to listen to listen to him on the radio if that’s the only way you can get information about the game and can’t watch the corresponding TV broadcast.
We only like Larry because he acts like he’s one of us, bleeding Bulldog red. But he’s not a very good play-by-play guy. He doesn’t tell you the situation very often and Loren’s ridiculous comments from the sideline make it very frustrating. I know these guys are Georgia guys, but I’m excited about some fresh voices in the booth and hopefully soon on the sidelines.
I hope Larry’s health improves and he can enjoy the rest of his life, especially the Dawgs’ run at the national title this season. Best to the Munsons!

Larry Munson is one of the biggest reasons I became a Bulldog fan waaayyy back in ‘75 at 7 years of age. My dad told me to listen to him one Saturday before all of the games were televised as they are now. I fell in love instantly even at that young age. God bless you Mr. Munson and thank you sir for all of those Saturday afternoons. There will NEVER be another Larry Munson.

He always seemed like and old friend sitting in your living room or camp site telling you what the Dawgs were doing. I want to cry, but I will simply say, “Good Bye Old Friend”. The Dawg Nation will miss you and always love you.

How many times have I turned the volume down on the t.v. and turned the radio up? Listening to Larry Munson was like watching the game with him sitting on the couch with you. What a lot of fun I have had over the years watching games with my friends and waiting on the next verbal gem. God bless you brother.

Kevin, You are dead wrong. Ed Thilenious was indeed the voice of the Dawgs. He took the Falcons job when they started up in 66. Larry moved from Milo’s sidekick to replace Ed.
Their styles were totally different. I like Thilenious an awful lot, but Larry Munson is Georgia Football. God Bless him.

Larry Munson is one of those rare men who makes college football more than a game. He is central to our football tradition. His voice is the expression of his (and our) love, passion, fear, and excitement. For all his weird and wonderful idiosyncrasies, or maybe because of them, he is a giant of a human being for all of us who grew up with Georgia football. The man and his voice have given all of us memories that we will never forget no matter how long we live.
Larry, I hope you enjoy many more years of Georgia football from the comfort of your home. And thank you again for the telephone interview that you gave a high school newspaper reporter 27 springs ago. I’ll always be grateful.

So long to the laughing stock of all the SEC announcers. The guy has been terrible for the last few years after he was horrible the first few.
Never mind that he was slobbering fan, he never mentioned what the situation was except for ‘4 inches’ for a first down.
Good riddance, I’d say. He needs to take Loren with him.

Larry had the unique ability to call a game like true Georgia fans would call it. He used we and they just like we do in the stands. My travels around to see the Dawgs growing up did not afford much opportunity to listen to him, but God I couldn’t wait to get back to the car and listen to the highlights. All of his great calls are associated with some of the best times in my life going to games with my dad and another friend of his. I will miss his calls dearly and it is my hope one day to just sit in Sanford Stadium and listen to his greatest calls as those highlights are played on the video board. I’m sure, like a lot of you, that I would sit there for hours alternating between tears and chill bumps. God bless you Larry and happy retirement!

Why do people feel the need to get on here and bash a man who dedicated his life to bringing this game to people who, at the time, could not watch it on TV and after we could we still chose to mute it and hear him. You people need to get in your bed and cry your nerd eyes to sleep. This man is a legend in every Atlanta sport there is. WE LOVE YOU LARRY!!!!!!!! The 1980 national championship season. We beat Auburn and Larry’s comment about sugar falling from the sky, referring to Sugar Bowl where we beat Notre Dame. Thanks Larry for the memorys. You cannot be replaced. GA football will not be same with out you. You are a homer and you are GA football. You made the radio feel like you were at the game.

His best call ever was a UT @ UGA game in ‘94 when we had Todd Helton as our QB. Munson said something like “My God they’ve come down here and beaten us with a first baseman ! ” Now that was pretty funny !!!
Happy retirement you ‘ole gravel voiced homer. Not exactly sad to see you retire, but I do wish you well and some improved health.

I don’t know what the criteria you slobs have for a voice but Larry’s voice sounded like the old man in a nursing home who was there dieing of throat cancer.
To correct the history, Larry came from Minnesota to Vandy, where he was fired for not keeping the fans correctly informed. He then came to the Braves, where he was backup to Milo, but was fired when Ed Thlleneous replaced him. Desperate, he begged Georgia for a job to replace Thileneous.

Larry I just want you to know how much you have meant to me over the years. When I hear your voice I am immediately transported back to the early 80’s when UGA football was rarely on tv . As a young teenager, I held on to every call you would make like I was reading a good book. It seems like when every close game came to an end I felt as if I had just ended some great journey that you took me on. You truly took sports broadcasting to the next level with your unique way of calling football and I will never forget you. All the best in your future Larry!

Larry Munson has been the voice of the Dawgs for as long as I can remember. Even this life-long Tech fan is sad to see the voice of the Dawgs go. This truly is an end of an era. A fall day in my childhood wasn’t complete withour hearing both Tech’s Al Ciraldo and UGA’s Larry Munson call the football games. After listening to the Central Michigan game, though, it was becoming rather apparent that though his heart still wanted to be in the game, his body wasn’t cooperating. He sounded very tired and weak. He’s given it all for UGA and truly deserves to watch and enjoy the rest of the games as a spectator. Best wishes, Larry!

Larry Munson has been a horrible announcer. He’s a joke to almost everyone except Georgia fans. And to those people who are saying nobody should say anything bad about him today - good grief! The man’s not dead; he’s just retiring. I can’t stand to listen to him for one minute. All he does is whine and grumble. And if you want a mental picture of what’s happening in the game, forget about it.

I agree that it is nice to see the fans of other colleges pass along kind words at Larry’s retirement. I can’t think of the DAWGS without Larry being in the box calling the game.

There are so MAHY - Rex Robinson’s field goal to beat Kentucky in 1978 (“Yeah!! Yeah!! Yeah!!), Kevin Butler’s 62 or 63-yard field goal to beat Clemson a couple of ye
