How much will you miss Munson?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The legendary voice of the Georgia Bulldogs has gone silent. Larry Munson will announce that he will no longer call the play-by-play for Georgia football games. He began calling Georgia football games in 1966. Munson, 85 and had been in failing health, quit going on the road with the Bulldogs last season. What are your favorite Munson moments? What will miss most and who should replace him on Saturday broadcasts?

I will miss the old Larry Munson. Truthfully, he has sounded weak and in pain. Sorry, it was overdue.

We knew this day would eventually come; however, if this is correct it is an extremely sad one for all those that bleed red and black. Larry can NEVER be replaced—he is as much an irreplaceable piece of the UGA fabric as Vince Dooley and Herschel Walker. I just hope Larry is doing OK and can enjoy following the Dawgs from the sidelines.

Larry Munson has been the one constant in Georgia football since I was a kid. He is a direct link back to my youth, and as such I will miss hearing him call the UGA games a great deal!
We all knew in the past few years that any game could be his last…so I have definitely listened more to the radio of late and treasured hearing his voice. He definitely sounded tired in the first couple of games this season. I hope all is well with him.
Larry Munson will forever be the greatest announcer ever to me.

I haven’t been around long, but I remember listening to Larry Munson when I was a kid. I believe the call for me would have to be 2001 game vs UT.
In the words of Larry munson: “10 Seconds, We’re on their 6. Michael Johnson turned around asked the bench something. And now, Greene makes him lineup on the right in the slot, we have 3 receivers. Tennessee playing what amounts to a 4-4, Fake, and there’s somebody Touchdown! My God a Touchdown! We threw it to Haynes. We just stuffed them with five seconds left! My God almighty, did you see what he did! David Greene just straightened up and we snuck the fullback over! Haynes is keeping the ball! Haynes is come running all the way across to the bench. We just dumped it over 26-24. We just stepped on their face with a hobnailed boot and broke their nose. We just crushed their faces!”
God Bless Ya Larry. Have a Great Time Fishing!

It’s a sad day for those of us for whom Munson is the voice of Georgia football.
My favorite Munson call is one you never hear anymore: Lindsey’s Scott’s 99-yard kickoff return to begin the second half of the 1978 LSU game in Baton Rouge. Munson’s description was absolutely electric.
Thanks for 43 great years, Larry!

It’s bittersweet, but a bit overdue. He’ll be missed mainly because of all of the memories his voice conjures up. But truth be told, he won’t be missed by anyone that wants to listen to a game and be able to get a sense of what’s actually happening as it occurs. He just hasn’t been able to deliver that for several years now. Thanks for the memories Larry. God bless.

Larry is woven into the fabric of Georgia Football. He has given us tremendous pleasure and memories over the years. We will definitely miss his spontaneous enthusiasm for the big play. Larry should stay in the booth until HE says he is ready to step down - period. As long as this is his decision, I’m OK with it. Thank you, Larry, for 42 glorious years as the Voice of the Georgia Bulldogs!!

His best, in my opinion:
“We’re on the 19, you gotta get to the 4 for the first down. Crowd roars at us, 3 wideouts. Man, we’ve had some shots haven’t we? Snap to David Greene, there he goes in the corner again and we jump up… TOUCHDOWN! OH GOD A TOUCHDOWN! In the corner! With 85 seconds!” UGA vs. Auburn 2002
“Tennessee playing what amounts to a 4-4, Fake, and there’s somebody Touchdown! We just crushed their faces!” UGA vs. Tennessee 2001
“So we’ll try and kick one 100,000 miles, we hold it on our own 49-1/2, 60 yards plus a foot and Butler kicks a long one, Butler kicks a long one, OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!… The stadium is worse than bonkers. Eleven seconds left and I can’t believe what I saw. This is ungodly!” UGA vs. Clemson 1984
“4th and 17, I know I’m asking a lot you guys, but Hunker it down one more time! … Pass into the endzone… and the Dawgs broke it up! They broke it up! … The Dawgs with 42 seconds… I won’t ask you to do that again you guys … 32 seconds, Lastinger up to the line… Lastinger falls back on the 16 … GA students standing and roaring 23, 22, 21 clock running, running. Oh look at the Sugar falling out of the sky! Look at the Sugar falling out of the sky!” UGA vs. Auburn 1982
“Florida in a stand-up five, they may or may not blitz, Belue third down on the 8, in trouble, he got a block behind him going to throw on the run, complete on the 25 to the 30, Lindsay Scott 35, 40, Lindsay Scott 45, 50, 45, 40. … Run Lindsay, 25, 20, 15, 10, Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! … Well, I can’t believe it. 92 yards and Lindsay really got in a foot race I broke my chair. I came right through a chair. A metal steel chair with about a 5 inch cushion, I broke it. The booth came apart. The stadium… well the stadium fell down, now they do have to renovate this place… they’ll have to rebuild it now. This is incredible. You know this game has always been called the World’s Greatest Cocktail Party, do you know what’s gonna happen here tonight, and up at St. Simmons and Jeckyl Island, and all those places where all those dawg people have got those condominiums for 4 days. Man is there going to be some property destroyed tonight! 26-21, Dawgs on top. We were gone. I’d gave up, you did too. We were out of it and gone. Miracle!” UGA vs. Florida 1980

Yes, I know I’m from the opposition, but I still remember Ed Thelenious (and yes I know I don’t know how to spell his name).
In my mind Ed was the best play=by-play football announcer I ever heard. Not a homer, though at times he showed excitement over UGA plays, Ed set up the game so well the listener thought he was actually inside the stadium. A clear, deep voice that announced the formation, the motion, and every aspect of each play as it went forward. IMHO the absolute best! I guess Munson replaced him. and though Munson had many great (possibly scripted) calls of UGA plays, and seemed to moan and cry when the Dogs weren’t doing well or when a call went against them, I still miss the steadiness of Ed’s play calling.
UGA fans will miss Munson, and I sympathize with them, but if you get a chance to hear a tape of Ed Thelenious calling a Georgia game, don’t miss it.
I hope UGA finds a replacement more like Ed than Larry.
Best wishes to Larry in any case. He did a memorable job.

I am stunned. Even thought we knew it was coming. Larry is such an institution with UGA. I was 10 years old when he started doing the games. And growing up in a family of true Bulldog alumni and fans, we always listened to the game while my parents were attending. We enjoyed the discussions when they got home. So I grew up hearing Larry Munson every Saturday in the fall. That is the only way I have ever listened to the game even if it is on TV. You will be missed. I hope you know the enjoyment we have had over the years listening to your commentary’s of the Bulldogs. You always made the games much more exciting and emotional, which made them the best. I can’t pinpoint my favorite call. There have been so many. Maybe the call for Lindsey Scott. It’s hard to pick. And I really don’t know who should replace him, but they better have personality. Have a great retirement Larry. You deserve it.

Tears in my eyes, truly the end of an era. I am glad that my six year old son has grown old enough to hear him voice a few games, but am sad my three year old daughter will not. But this is not about us, it is about Larry, and I wholly agree that he has duly deserved his retirement. I pray that this sudden announcement is not a harbinger that his health has taken a turn for the worse. I further pray that he has many good years ahead of him, duly annointed the #1 dawg fan in the land. We should all be so fortunate that we are able to make such a profound impact on any given profession and community.

I always knew this day would come, but never really believed that it would. Larry, you will always be a part of Georgia football as much as Sinkwich, Trippi, Tarkenton, Belue, Woerner, Scott, Walker and UGA. You are the greatest ever, and your voice on Football Saturdays will be sorely missed in this household and family. As PreachDawg so aptly put it, God Bless Ya, and try not to catch them all!

Munson will ALWAYS be the voice of the Dawgs, in my mind.
I was listening to a game earlier this season and was thinking how much Munson did not sound like himself and was thinking that he should consider calling it a career and a GREAT ONE at that.
Larry Munson will be missed on Saturday’s during College Football season. It will take us long time dawg fans a while to get used to a new voice, but we will always remember Munson and his GREAT game calling ability.
All the best to Larry Munson is his LONG overdue retirement.
Larry, you can now enjoy the dawg games from the other side of the mic as we have every week for years!
Thanks for all of the memories!

Such a sad day. It’s time to say goodbye to an old friend, I guess. But most of us always thought that old friend would never leave.
All of those classic calls mentioned earlier are truly memorable. One that will always ring in my head was UGA/UT 2002. My wife-to-be and I were driving through Tennessee (enemy territory!) on our way to Boone, NC. I had been enduring the UT broadcast all day when it came down to a 4th down for UGA. Instead of punting, we decided to go for it with less than a minute to go.
I started losing the radio signal and searched frantically for the game. I barely found Larry’s voice in time to hear him say “we put the whole school out in front of him.” In my mind I can still see the road and the sun setting at that moment in 2002.
Thank you Larry for that moment and all the others, too.

It hurts. Skip Caray, now Munson? I remember in 82’ when listening to radio was common for football. That was the year of his “Sugar Falling from the Sky” statement. I was on the back porch working with my dad, I was 8. I heard him say that on the radio dropped something I was holding for my dad and ran straight to the TV to see “Sugar falling from the sky”! The great thing about his voice is that it’s associated with so many Georgia memories, but also family/friend memories b/c listening to the games usually meant the game wasn’t on TV and you were sitting around with family/friends either listening or doing stuff on the side (work). Those who never heard him broadcast basketball really missed a treat. I’ll never forget the OT win vs. LSU or the overtime games with Tech. Listening to him describe Shaq. Wow.

As a Tech fan who hates Georgia, Mr Munson will be missed. Larry called the Falcon games from 1987 to 1991. He always brought excitement to the game. Yeah, he’s a homer, but he made a lot of Falcon fans and fans of that other team in Athens happy. Go fishing Larry, you sure deserve the time off. Best wishes Sir!

There will never be another play-by-play announcer quite like Larry.
Back in the day when very few away games were on television, he brought you into the stadium.
I’ve been listening to Larry for 30 years and there are too many great calls to name.
My all time favorite Larry story though is when my sister-in-law saw him at the Dawgs hotel in Lexington the day of the game in 1994. It was my 38th birthday and I was at home. Janie got Larry to follow her to a payphone (no cell phones back then) and wait while she called my house. She told me to hold on because she had someone who wanted to wish me a happy birthday. In his best game day voice, his first words were, “Brian, is today your birthday”? I almost couldn’t speak and managed “Yeah, Larry”?? He talked to me for a few minutes and I’ll never forget that as long as I live. It was the most memorable birthday present I ever received.
Larry, you’ll always be the greatest and you’ll be missed by the entire Bulldawg Nation! You’ve earned the rest and I wish you all the best!

I am a season ticket holder to Tennessee and was sad when John Ward retired. As a member of the Army currently deployed in Afghanistan, I was previously stationed in GA, TN and NC and if I was out on a Saturday night and UGA was playing, I would try and find the broadcast on the radio just to listen to Larry Munson. The thing that I loved most about Larry Munson is that on many of his most memorable touchdown calls, he never actually used the word “touchdown.” It was his sheer enthusiasm that bled through the airwaves that made him the true legend that he is.

Some of my most fond memories are listening to Larry call the Georgia games. Those mornings listening to the games around the trucks after a dove hunt down home in Southwest Georgia… Jumping and screaming in my dorm as I watched the 2001 Tennessee game with the radio up and the tv muted… I wonder how many times I’ve listened to that call?
Even after becoming a Ramblin’ Wreck I couldn’t bear to miss listening to Larry call the games. Larry, you will be missed! God bless you!

I have tears in my eyes right now. Larry Munson has defined many of my most precious memories from a small child to an adult pushing 40. I grew up just out of Athens, the child of a 1st generation UGA (& college) graduate. TV on mute, Sugar Bowl vs. Notre Dame in 1980….Larry called the NC game. I wll never forget that & so many other precious Larry “Bulldog” moments. When I heard there would be a special at 7:00 on WSB, I was alarmed. I’m glad to see he is still around….and just made a decision that this was the time. Happy birthday, Larry. We’ll miss you.

Mr. Munson,
I cannot even begin to help you “get the picture” of how you came into my childhood and beyond home during those special football saturdays. Special are the times me and my father, Don Battle, listened to your exciting play by play calls down in Coastal Georgia. I cherish, like I know many others fans do, each and evey one of those precious memories. I can still hear my father screaming over one of the many great plays you called from games past.
I wish I could have listened to your last game for some kind of closure, but time moves on doesn’t it. Thank you Larry for making Georgia Football so enjoyable. Your relaxing tone and insight has made you a fatherly figure to the true Georgia Fan. The end of this era is a true change of passage.
Thank you for all those precious football memories!

I’m a big Dawg fan, but honestly, Larry mentally retired about 10 years ago. It’s completely exasperating to listen to listen to him on the radio if that’s the only way you can get information about the game and can’t watch the corresponding TV broadcast.
We only like Larry because he acts like he’s one of us, bleeding Bulldog red. But he’s not a very good play-by-play guy. He doesn’t tell you the situation very often and Loren’s ridiculous comments from the sideline make it very frustrating. I know these guys are Georgia guys, but I’m excited about some fresh voices in the booth and hopefully soon on the sidelines.
I hope Larry’s health improves and he can enjoy the rest of his life, especially the Dawgs’ run at the national title this season. Best to the Munsons!

Larry Munson is one of the biggest reasons I became a Bulldog fan waaayyy back in ‘75 at 7 years of age. My dad told me to listen to him one Saturday before all of the games were televised as they are now. I fell in love instantly even at that young age. God bless you Mr. Munson and thank you sir for all of those Saturday afternoons. There will NEVER be another Larry Munson.

What a lot of fun I have had over the years watching games with my friends and waiting on the next verbal gem. God bless you brother.

Kevin, You are dead wrong. Ed Thilenious was indeed the voice of the Dawgs. He took the Falcons job when they started up in 66. Larry moved from Milo’s sidekick to replace Ed.
Their styles were totally different. I like Thilenious an awful lot, but Larry Munson is Georgia Football. God Bless him.

Larry Munson is one of those rare men who makes college football more than a game. He is central to our football tradition. His voice is the expression of his (and our) love, passion, fear, and excitement. For all his weird and wonderful idiosyncrasies, or maybe because of them, he is a giant of a human being for all of us who grew up with Georgia football. The man and his voice have given all of us memories that we will never forget no matter how long we live.
Larry, I hope you enjoy many more years of Georgia football from the comfort of your home. And thank you again for the telephone interview that you gave a high school newspaper reporter 27 springs ago. I’ll always be grateful.

So long to the laughing stock of all the SEC announcers. The guy has been terrible for the last few years after he was horrible the first few.
Never mind that he was slobbering fan, he never mentioned what the situation was except for ‘4 inches’ for a first down.
Good riddance, I’d say. He needs to take Loren with him.

Larry had the unique ability to call a game like true Georgia fans would call it. He used we and they just like we do in the stands. My travels around to see the Dawgs growing up did not afford much opportunity to listen to him, but God I couldn’t wait to get back to the car and listen to the highlights. All of his great calls are associated with some of the best times in my life going to games with my dad and another friend of his. I will miss his calls dearly and it is my hope one day to just sit in Sanford Stadium and listen to his greatest calls as those highlights are played on the video board. I’m sure, like a lot of you, that I would sit there for hours alternating between tears and chill bumps. God bless you Larry and happy retirement!

I don’t know what the criteria you slobs have for a voice but Larry’s voice sounded like the old man in a nursing home who was there dieing of throat cancer.
To correct the history, Larry came from Minnesota to Vandy, where he was fired for not keeping the fans correctly informed. He then came to the Braves, where he was backup to Milo, but was fired when Ed Thlleneous replaced him. Desperate, he begged Georgia for a job to replace Thileneous.

Larry I just want you to know how much you have meant to me over the years. When I hear your voice I am immediately transported back to the early 80’s when UGA football was rarely on tv . As a young teenager, I held on to every call you would make like I was reading a good book. It seems like when every close game came to an end I felt as if I had just ended some great journey that you took me on. Larry Munson has been the voice of the Dawgs for as long as I can remember. Even this life-long Tech fan is sad to see the voice of the Dawgs go. This truly is an end of an era. A fall day in my childhood wasn’t complete withour hearing both Tech’s Al Ciraldo and UGA’s Larry Munson call the football games. After listening to the Central Michigan game, though, it was becoming rather apparent that though his heart still wanted to be in the game, his body wasn’t cooperating. He sounded very tired and weak. He’s given it all for UGA and truly deserves to watch and enjoy the rest of the games as a spectator. Best wishes, Larry!

For my generation, the greatest Munson call will always be Belue-to Scott at the 1980 Florida game. I was at the game without a radio, so didn’t hear the call until later. There are so MAHY - Rex Robinson’s field goal to beat Kentucky in 1978 (“Yeah!! Yeah!! Yeah!!), Kevin Butler’s 62 or 63-yard field goal to beat Clemson a couple of years later, the immortal “My God, a Freshman!!” call at Tennessee in ‘80, the first time Herschel broke a long TD run at home in that ‘80 season (against Texas A&M)- :”There goes Herschel Walker! There goes Herschel Walker! There goes Herschel Walker all the way!!”.
The list could go on forever. Larry Munson was and IS the greatest ever, period. He can never be duplicated, and although Georgia announcers will come and go in the years ahead, he can never truly be replaced.
Thank you Larry, thank you, thank you, thank you for all the wonderful memories. You will never be forgotten.

It’s ridiculous that he was allowed to stay so long. You simply could not follow the game based on his broadcasting. One heck of a lot of action was lost, covered up by his ubiquitous “WE.” Larry, you’re not a “we.” You had nothing to do with the outcome of any football game.
The same people that like Munson’s broadcasts want Bobby Cox to keep managing the Braves until he’s 86 too. What a bunch of sentimental sissies. NEWS FLASH- We’re all going to die. Just because you live a long time doesn’t make you any more special.

I am sitting here at my computer typing this email with tears welling up in my eyes reading that the great Larry Munson is stepping down. Yes I am a 35 year old man and really dont care what people think. We are losing a great icon that will never be forgotten or replaced. My father was a graduate of Georgia in the early 60’s. He got me hooked on UGA football. I can remember my dad sitting in the kitchen during Georgia games listening to the Great Larry Munson. My father loved to listen to you Larry. My father passed in July of 2001. I can honestly say that the greatest call of my life was the hobnailed boot. I am a high school football coach and I was on my way to warner robbins for a saturday night football game. I was listening to the game on the radio on the way to my game. Your call was magical. Yes I remember Ed Thelenious as well. Even more so, Bill Monday. 14-13 over Auburn for the SEC championship. Fran Tarkington to Bill Heron with 2:06 left. Now that was the “land of milk and honey”! How many games did I listen to on that old RCA radio as Ed said “Imagine your radio dial as we see the field”. Dan McGill was the precursor of Loran Smith. He always met with the opposing team’s sports information director before the game and wished them. “Best of luck every day but today.”

The first game I remember hearing Larry call was the 1968 Ga Fla game in Jacksonville which Georgia won 51 - 0 in a driving rain storm. Since then players, coaches and even several UGAs have come and gone but Larry has always been there.
There are many of his calls that I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing at the moment. I remember being on my hands and knees in my living room floor pounding the carpet with my fist and begging Lindsey to run. I remember being on a golf course with head phones on when the sugar fell from the sky. When we broke up the Auburn pass I yelled so loud other golfers just knew I had hit a hole in one. There have been so many great memories I couldnt begin to list them all.
It would be great if we could win it all this year and dedicate the National Championship to Larry. Enjoy your retirement. You will always be remembered and missed.

I can’t ever remember having a patient with a subdural hematoma recover completely without some deficit - Larry was undoubtedly aware of his and yet the courage and fortitude he showed by coming back to the booth to announce the Ga games is remarkable. As the heart and soul of the Bulldog nation he tried to stretch and lean in there for one more yard, one more first down, one more score. Larry - now you get the picture - you’ll be revered and remembered and loved by millions - as long as there are tapes and CDs and a UGA football team, your famous calls will be replayed time and time again bringing chills and thrills to the faithful. Remember when you watched TV, but you turned the volume down and brought the radio in the room so you could listen to Larry make his calls?
He’ll be missed in College Football, a true class act. But I hope he gets to be a fan, watching and listening to HIS bulldogs.
Auburn lost Jim Fyffe, a wonderful announcer a few years ago due to a sudden death. He and Larry used to ride to games together and there were wonderful stories about both of them.
I’m glad Larry will have time to soak in retirement and enjoy it.
New announcers will do just fine, they just won’t ever be Larry.

DawgHater, you need to check your facts before showing how much of an A$$ you really are. Ed Thlleneous did not fire him he hired him as his replacement you idiot.
I’ve listened to some of the other college announcers on Sirrus on Saturdays. And even though father time has finally caught up with Larry he was still better than what many of the other 1-A schools had to offer. Larry you brought many fond memories to me of working with my dad in the yard on Saturdays with the speakers in the living room window so we could hear you call the game. May God continue to bless you in your retirement. I hope your not giving up the Sunday feature movies with the UGA girls.

The day that many of us have been dreading has finally arrived. Most, if not all, Georgia faithful have seen this coming for a while now. The first couple of games this year, Munson sounded raspy and tired. God bless him for hanging in as long as he did. Georgia football just won’t be quite the same without him.
And as for all of you pathetic, soulless imbeciles who have used this forum to take cheap shots at someone whose shoes you are not fit t polish, get a life. Even Florida fans have more class. Your mothers must be proud.

Larry Munson is the voice of College football. Munson has given football fans great moments for decades. My most memorable experience was listening to this man as a youngster right beside my father. I have been listening to Munson for 28 years and I am 31. I did not know who I was listening to at the early age, but my father loved him. That was all that mattered to me. Thanks for the memories from run Lindsay run to hobnail boot. From a Jacksonville Florida Dawg

I’ve never heard a more biased, nonsensical announcer in my life. Being behind a play or two is bad enough, but not even recognizing the right players that are on the field? LM should’ve hung up the headphones a LOOOOOOONG time ago. Pretty much before he ever dreamed of doing what he poorly did.

OMG I will forever remember Larry . We will miss him so much. We are bulldog lovers ,Raise bulldogs and named one after him calling him Munson. When Larry Was in the hospital in April of this year. I saw him, My Grand mother was in ICU and all the nurses was talking about him,, Man how I wanted to just walk in there and talk with him. My whole family for every game would turn the sound down on the tv and turn the radio up Just to hear him. This weekends game I was looking forward to hearing his voice again. I will miss him so much , The Wright Family in Bishop..

I have truly, truly regretted this day. I knew it was coming but, selfishly, I always wanted one more game.
As many that have posted here, I was young when Larry started calling the games on radio. I didn’t see a game on TV till I was a teenager. Didn’t need to.
All of the posts here from rival fans wishing Larry well, what a class act! I pity the people who want to make negative comments during such a time.
Larry, get better and enjoy your well deserved time off. There are plenty of fish out there waiting to be caught.

As I come up on the big 6-0 in a few weeks, I can remember all the way back to the 1950’s when Munson called the baseball games for the Nashvile Vols. We could not pick up the Crackers at night, so catching them at Sulpher Dell with the 255 foot fence in right field was my first time to hear him call a game of any kind. There There is absolutely no way UGA can ever repay him for the effort he expended in building the Bulldog Nation. Hope Coach Richt will dedicate the hoped for victory against Alabama to him. There is a time to pick on your rivals, but this is not one of them. As far as these classless clowns who find that it is appropriate to ridicule a sports legend who is in declining health, they probably would have ridculed Lou Gehrig when he was dying of A L S. The Dawg’s War Correspondent
With troups in harm’s way I’m reluctant to use this comparison, but in my mind he was a war correspondent reporting live from the front line. Focused, serious, precise-and when the game called for it -urgent, intense, and spontaneous (Leading to quotes we’ll never forget). A Homer but always honest in his assessments and professional in carrying out his duties. He conveyed a measured sense of satisfaction after a win and somber resignation after a loss. But even after a loss, Larry’s voice gave us some comfort and optimism. Hearing him reminded us we’d fight again another day and he’d be there with us.

To many of us who actually spent our four years at UGA and graduated, Larry has been a constant embarassment, casting humiliation among all who attend or attended UGA. There have been too many times that we have watched a game on tv while listening to Munson on the radio, and seriously wondered what game Munson was watching (cause it surely wasn’t the same one we were watching). He should have found something else to do LONG ago. The only reason he is regarded as a legend is that he’s sat there for so long . Oh well, all bad things eventually come to an end…UGA eventually evolved from just being a running “three yards and a cloud of dust” team to a well-rounded team with a balanced ground and air attack….and now we will actually get an announcer who can actually give accurate play by play who doesn’t sound like he talks with marbles in his mouth.

I wish Larry Munson well with his health and a happy retirement. But other than that I just don’t understand why people admire the man and call him classy of all things.
I’m sorry but just don’t respect a major college announcer that proudly declares “we just stepped on their noses with a hobnailed boot, we broke their noses, we crushed their face”. In the history of college football I’ve never seen a more classless utterance from an announcer.
Don’t even try to defend that. That was just plain classless and I can’t understand what kind of a fan base would love a trashtalker like that? At most other places people would have demanded that the man be fired.
Only at Georgia would they celebrate someone who exhibits such poor sportsmanship.

Larry is the only UGA announcer I have known. Back in the 70’s, before cable and television deals, every Saturday dad would get out a radio, set it next to his chair and turn on the game. and just before the start of the game came those words, “Now get the picture.”
In the 80’s we often turned down the volume on the television and turned on the same old radio. Always better than someone who did not have the feeling for the DAWGS.
In the late 90’s and 2000’s, when I moved to Virginia, I could pickup UGA night games.
With the announcement of his retirement, it is going to hard to get the picture now.

I have listened to Larry since the 60’s and lived and died by his calls. What set Larry apart from other announcers was he said what you were feeling. Larry’s comments were never scripted such as “Oh my or shakin an bakin” and “Sugar falling out of the sky and hunker down you guys one more time” are timeless legends. I didn’t have the heart to tell him in the final days when he called Scott “gabby”, or Loran ” long winded guy who writes a column that somebody reads” that he needed to be put in a home. But when he finally started calling Vince Dooley “madam of the house” we all knew it was time.

In all of sports, Larry Munson is the best announcer of all-time. Baseball had a few like him. College Football used to have some like him. None have endured to this day, but Larry Munson. We Georgia Bulldogs have always turned off every broadcast volume except for his. Our opponents recognize that in post-game comments, they are forced to respond to his call of the game. Everyone knows Larry Munson is a Georgia Bulldog. We are worried about this team’s strength. My God, they are good. Run. Run. Run. We just broke them. He’s open in the end zone. Down the sideline, we go. We just ran right over them. A Freshman. I wish Larry Munson nothing but the best personally. For all the kids who never will get their play at Georgia immortalized, we can always imitate Larry Munson and how he would have told the world how the play actually looked. His grovel voice pleading that our opponent not be as good as they seemed to Larry Munson, clearly endeared himself to every opponent each week. My God, they are good he would exclaim. If you haven’t already, you might want to read the comments by other teams’ fans about how much they Love Larry Munson. One would think that he partisan Georgia Bulldog viewpoint would grate on our opponents. It never did. They would just sit there and listen in awe with all the rest of the sports’ world. There might never be another who can emulate, but there should be a School of Journalism course designed to do nothing but study how a game is described for their fans. In closing out his illustrious career, it is only fitting that he would think of us. If you want to be a broadcaster, you must have a thorough study of how he so enjoys life and knows that he is there for us to color the pageantry of a sports’ contest. “I can’t express enough my deep feelings toward the Georgia football fans,” Munson said in a release. “They have been so friendly especially during this most recent period of time. I feel I owe them so much more than I can give. I’ll remember all the great times with the Dogs and have the fondest wishes and good luck toward them all.” It is not us that you owe, but we. Thank you.
I nominate Larry Munson for The Legendary Larry Munson Award.

A friend retired today. I didn’t know him, but yet I did. He taught me a lot.
He taught me to get the picture. He reminded me that Ole Miss had a huge offensive line and we were soooo small up front. He taught me that “down in the corner” meant we scored, even though he never told me that. I knew he hated Tennessee, but he never told me that either. I never had to look at the clock in a close game because he read it for me…sixteen…fifteen…fourteen…thirteen… watch the clock! watch the clock!
A friend retired today. A gold watch is hardly enough. Maybe 13 wins and a couple of trophies will help. Right now I’m not sure.

Asking us “the people of Georgia” how much we will miss Larry Munson is like asking us how much we will miss our best friend, a member of our family, our childhood days. A piece of the magic is gone and a piece of us that longed for fall Saturday afternoons listening to him is gone too. Larry is a piece of Georgia just as much as that red clay that prevades the state. We will be sad to be assured but such is the way of life, time marches on but don’t fret…We have our memories..and we must consider ourselves lucky to have even had him at all. Larry, you are the best. As a kid growing up in South Carolina, I loved listening to two announcers. Bob Fulton for Carolina and you for Georgia. Announcers are not the same today. From the Gamecock Nation, we wish you all the best.

Before every game was on TV you had radio games. The play by play guy had to paint a visual for the listener.
Larry MADE Georgia Football! “My God, we just beat Tennessee in Knoxville” or “Look at the sugar falling out of the sky” are more than calls, they are poetry.
Bless you Larry, the era of radio has passed, but for us gray beards, we remember sunny Saturday afternoons when you would set the table for us. Thanks for the memories!

Larry,
Honestly I am not sure if the Dawgs will be the same. You wil always be a part of my findest memories watching Dawgs football. Yes I said watching because as a child I remember my father would ALWAYS turn the volume down on the TV and listen to you on the radio while the Dawgs played. To borrow a Cliche from the USMC, many people have to wonder what mark they made on this world, you will never have to wonder that.
Thank You,

whenever I would hear Larry call the Georgia games instead of him saying”They are on the 20 yard line” he would make it personal”WE are on the 20 yard line”. I have never heard any announcer do that. Being from Michigan and hearing the likes of Ernie Harwell and George Kell calling Tiger games and Frank Beckmann calling U of M football games to see that Larry is retiring is a sad day in sports.
For all you have done Larry…you are the one!!!

Larry Munson was, to put it simply, the voice of my childhood.
I was 6 years old when he became a legend when Rex Robinson beat Kentucky in Lexington. When I was 8, I remember my dad and I huddled with a transistor radio trying to listen to Herschel’s debut in Knoxville. After Munson’s call, “He’s running over people! Oh you Herschel Walker!”, my dad said, “Munson’s going nuts!”
I used to listen to the old cassette tapes of the seasons (before DVD or even VHS). Names like Richard Appleby, Gene Washington, Matt Robinson, Willie McLendon, Jeff Pyburn, Buck Belue, Amp Arnold, Lindsey Scott, Scott Woerner, John Lastinger, and of course, Herschel Walker. Those were the heroes of my youth and their stories were told in vivid and gut-wrenching detail by one of the great story tellers, Larry Munson.
In an era before every game was televised, Larry Munson was the voice of the Dawgs and he will be missed more than he could possibly know.
Let’s just say, everything I needed to know I learned from reading the Bible, talking with my dad, and listening to Larry Munson.

As an LSU fan, I appreciate Larry Munson as the last survivor of the primarily radio era when nearly every SEC school had an exceptional radio announcer, who could colorfully paint word pictures of what was happening on and around the field. When TV coverage was not so thoroughly pervasive, this was an absolute necessity for diehard SEC fans across the South. Munson is a certified member of that elite club of announcers like Ferguson at LSU, Forney at Alabama, Ward at Tennessee, honorary member Ciraldo at Tech, etc.

Too bad he could not have done one last game between the hedges to get a proper send off and be honored in Dawg Style….but maybe he didn’t want that kind of fanfare, or maybe he’s just too tired to go on.
Anyway, Larry, it won’t be the same without you. Thanks for the memories.

God: “So, You’re the great Larry Munson - the voice of my Georgia Bulldogs!” Larry: “Uh. yes, Lord.” God: “I knew you were on your way, of course, so before I let you into the Kingdom for a peaceful eternity, you have gotta do it one more time, the “Run, Lindsey, run,” and, of course, Herschel and the “Hobnail Boot…Boy did I get a chuckle out of that!”. “And, finally, I’ve let it be known that I’ve broken your mold so there won’t be another Larry Munson.” “Don’t worry, the Bulldog Nation agrees with me (but, then again, they’d better!). “I will also let you have all the Ugas that are here so you can have some ‘heavenly’ pets!” Larry Munson: “Uh, thanks Lord.” I must admit, I had a great ride for 43 years and I’m glad you enjoyed the games listening to them as much as I had describing You and the Bulldog Nation each and every movement.”
God Bless you in retirement, Larry. You’re video tributes made an old man get tears in his eyes re-living the moments of infamy.

I just listened to a clip of Munson’s greatest calls on YouTube. There seemed to be a lot of water in my eyes all of a sudden. I started to grab a tissue; that’s when I saw my “I’m Georgia” towel hanging in a corner in my office. It just seemed more appropriate, so I used it instead. Dawgs, please manhandle the Tide this weekend as a tribute to Munson. Thank you Larry for all the wonderful memories!

Larry had the knack of painting a mental picture for the listeners that made you feel like you were in the stadium, he spiced things up with quips and phrases that made you laugh often during the broadcast even when the game situation was tense, and he was an unabashed fan but told it like it was. I`ll miss him, with all respect to the other PBP announcers out there, he is and will remain totally unique.

The last of a dying breed. I am sure in the heydey of radio there were probably better, but for a middle-aged UGA fan, there was nothing better. It has not hit me that it is over. Larry started preparing us for the day last year when he stopped doing the away games. For it to be over just like that, I cannot imagine. I can recall back to 1978 listening to the UGA - Kentucky game and Larry calling the final minutes. In 1980, UGA games were not always on TV and I listened to Larry every week. So many great UGA football memories and all of them crystalized by Larry’s call of the action. Reading just the text of some of his calls that are included on this page brought a smile to my face and a bit of a chuckle. I hope they give Larry a nice tribute at UGA. He deserves. To Larry: To me, you are the best. To perform your job at such a top level up into your mid 80s is astounding. You are better than anyone at giving down and distance. I scream at the radio begging today’s announcers to give me this info after a play. You have brought many, many hours of entertainment to me over the years. I hope that you have time for a lot of fishing and are in good health for the remainder of your life. Don’t be a stranger. Come see us at the stadium when you are able.

Larry Munson was a class act and will be missed by this great Bulldawg Nation. To GT grad, we happen to like “homers” around here. What’s wrong with showing a little emotion and excitement. This is not a one size fits all world, but be sure, Larry fit Georgia just fine!
To Fla Gator, how proud your fellow gators must be to see in print just how low and insensitive people can be. The old adage “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all has has never been more appropriate.
We’ll miss you, Larry!

Is it coincidence that there will be a blackout between the hedges this weekend? If so it is eery. I know the talk is that this was discussed on the trip back from ASU but I think it is certainly is a GREAT coincidencs. The blackout is for special games, or those of exceptional importance, I can think of no greater importance than a proper send off for Mr. Munson. How about a true stomping with the hobnailed boot? I think so!

He has the most ANNOYING voice on radio. He was basically the primary reason I didn’t listen to the Georgia games. I had hoped this day would come for quite some time now, and I’m glad it finally has. To quote him in a past game “The kick is, the kick is, the kick is….NO GOOD!!! Georgia looses again!!!” You go Larry, and PLEASE stay away from the microphone.

“we just stepped on their noses with a hobnailed boot, we broke their noses, we crushed their face”. Hey,”hobnailed boot”, that’s what we call a metaphor. If you are so offended by the language, why do you choose that moniker? Yep, Larry is a big time “homer”, but so what? Clearly, he’s the voice of a thousand happy Saturdays. Every school has its cherished traditions that matter to no one but the supporters of the school, and listening to Larry Munson, I’m proud to say, is OURS. So, thanks Larry, we’ll long miss you and cherish your calls. Thanks to the supporters of other schools for their kind words, and a big bite in the butt from Uga for the negative folks.

It’s a sad day for the bulldog nation. Larry you will be missed.
I remember listening to the 2002 UGA/AU game and nearly wrecking my truck when Munson called the touchdown to Johnson in the corner.
“Touchdown! Oh God a Touchdown”
I was so drawn into that game, I completely ignored the red traffic light.
I’m one of many that has muted the TV so we could listen to Larry call the game. When the TV and radio wouldn’t sync up, I’d just turn off the TV and listen to Larry.
Larry, you are a legend in red and black. God bless you and may the fishing holes be good to you!

As an orange and blue UF grad, and a lifelong football fan, I wish Larry Munson all the best. It is impossible to think of Georgia football without recalling his voice. Any true fan of college football, regardless of allegiance, should be saddened by the loss of this link to the great history of the SEC. Although, I DO get tired of hearing the Lindsay Scott call in replays every year!

I grew up in Athens and was attending Barrow Elementary when I first remember hearing Larry Munson. We lived in Married housing and the sounds from Sanford stadium used to wake us every Saturday in the fall. I even got my haircut by Mr. Munson’s barber, Herschel Reeves, at Five Points Barber Shop. Larry was as important to the Georgia program as the Hedges, the Tracks (pre 1980’s), Herschel Walker, Erk Russell, Vince Dooley or anyone else for that matter.
It was only after college, when I had moved away, that I realized how important hearing his calls were to me. I used to tell my friends up North, but they didn’t get it. Nor did I expect them to. After moving back to Atlanta in the mid 90’s, I got to hear him again. For me, nothing sounded sweeter than that gravelly howl. For all the times at Loco’s on Harris Street where it was understood that when it is time for the game, the music goes off and on comes Larry. Or sitting and tailgating with friends doing impressions of our favorite calls. Mr. Munson you will be missed more than you will ever know, but you have left each of us so many memories that will live in our hearts forever. Your calls will be retold to my children (as they are too young to get it) for years to come. Thank you sir!!!!!
