Smoltz keeping options open for ‘09
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In an interview with Atlanta Magazine, which was later picked up by ESPN.com, Braves pitcher John Smoltz publicly discussed for the first time the possibility of playing somewhere else in 2009 - if he actually plays next season.
According to the report, Smoltz is “100 percent committed to playing the rest of my career for the Atlanta Braves. But the veteran righthander, who has spent his entire career with the Braves, also said “this can’t be my only option. … I may not be in the [Braves’] plans.”
You can read the entire Atlanta Magazine item here. . What are your thoughts?

It would be a shame to see him with anything but a tomahawk on his chest.

Montana, Favre, Namath, E. Smith, and Jordan all went on to play for other teams. They are all remembered as greats of their original team. I love Smoltz. Unless you’re moving him to the bullpen, he can’t be in the plans for the Braves. If Glavine, Smoltz or Hampton are in the Braves rotation (with $50 mil to spend) then that tells me the Braves aren’t serious about winning

For how much I love Smoltzie i think we have to let him go. $54 million to spend can bring us what we need C.C. and a hitter such as pat burrell. With two aquisitions such as these we can be a 90 win club next season.

With so many positions to fill next year, maybe the Braves should be rebuilding and that we should not expect them to win it all next year. Signing any or all of Smoltz, Glavine, and/or Hampton WOULD sit well with me, for what better mentors for the young staff could a team possibly hope to bring the future faster?

It is time to move on, He could be closer btu the idea of trying to win with him, Glavine is stupid, the good days are behind them, Glavine has been stealing the money for the past 2 years. It is time for a new rotation.

I am sure we can sign him with some incentive based package which depends on a much higher salary based on innings based. Because one thing is for sure - he is a horse when he is healthy.

Every good thing comes to an end. I love Smoltzie, Glavine, and Company, but they are wayyyy past there prime; the time to rebuild is now - don’t waste money or time trying to resign these guys.
