Georgia Tech a ranked team?

With Georgia Tech’s 19-16 victory against Boston College should the Yellow Jackets now be ranked? The Yellow Jackets overcame three turnovers and playing on the road to win their first conference game of the season. What do you think?

As a Princeton grad—I would say Rank Them!!! Anytime you can put together athletes who not only know how to spell “sat” but can also take the SAT and score well, I say give them credit. Rank Wake Forest as well. Look who they must play—-Clemson, Florida St, North Carolina St and a couple of other entities that don’t require scholarly pursuits. Hell, I don’t think Florida State even requires class attendance with that senile, old hustler at the helm.

I’m actually thinking of adopting Tech since my move here.

Very nice win Jackets!! Paul Johnson is a great coach and will turn this team into a great team… one that will be able to run w/ UGA in the very near future!!

Great win and Go Dawgs!!

They should definitely be ranked higher than they currently are ranked, but not in the Top 25 just yet. I was impressed with our defense, coaching and QB play. I am hoping BC’s defensive front is the best we will face the rest of the year, because our offensive line struggled and the running game was essentially stuffed up the gut.

What a GREAT start…….2-0 baby!!!!!!

As a die hard tech fan….DEF. NOT!! I want this team to want to prove itself, and the best way to do that is start the season 3-0 with a win over VT next week…WHEN that happens…then we should be ranked!

Not yet, I think we should be in “Also Receiving Votes” like we were in one of this week’s polls, and poised for a big jump if we can pull off a win in Blacksburg.

Two things from this win:

Defense played great, especially with the big time of possession advantage the Eagles had.

Second, that’s as good a defensive line as we’ll see all year. And we got a W anyway.

I would rather they didn’t. It seems to mess up the chemistry or something. Let them beat Va.Tech and then rank em. Sneaking up on people is fun.

I was very pleased with the GT defense but very disappointed with their offense. I think it is too early to be thinking of rankings. There are many more games to play before a rank can be determined although UGA claims to be No.1 before the first game.

Great win today, but like everyone has already said let’s wait and see what happens next week. All the talk this week was about BC’s D line. I think teams need to take notice of the Tech D, which was superb today after being put in some precarious situations because of turnovers.

I must say Nesbitt and Dwyer are awesome. Did not get to watch the game since I live in Colorado, but it sounded like Nesbitt made great decisions all day.

I could care less about rankings right now, just keep improving and winning every week.

Lets not get too crazy about rankings yet. We keep winning and the nation will have to notice. Everyone needs to stay healthy. If this is us at week two… by the time we get to UGA, the redneck nation might just be feelin the sting.

A great start to the ACC season. Anyone who worries about rankings this time of year is foolish. My UGA friend here says CPJ reminds him of Dooley with an ugly win from stout defense and making just enough plays. I think he meant it as a compliment….

In the end, your rank doesn’t matter. The only thing you can do is beat the team in front of you.

If you’re ranked #1 and you lose, your ranking is meaningless.

Just win the game. Let the talking heads gripe about rankings, and just win baby!!!

Who cares? Rankings only matter at the end of the year.

Win and the rankings take care of themselves. Lose and it doesn’t matter.

Great win today. Winning on the road against a tough in-conference opponent is big. It says a lot about the difference in attitude that the change in head coach has already made. Two games under PJ and the troops already have big dreams.

Let’s see how the team reacts against VT next week before we start whining about rankings.

Our young, inexperienced defense grew up a LOT today. Without a stellar defensive effort, we don’t walk away with a win.

We still need to get the fumbling problem under control but it sure was nice to watch ‘em get one on the road today. As happy as I am to win, I don’t think we should be ranked - yet.

Now it’s time to sit back and wait for all of the UGA fans who said BC would kill us today. I’m sure they’ll report in to eat their share of crow.

Wating… waiting… waiting…

I say no. I would not argue with whatever is chosen, a big road win but still an unproven team, that managaed to get by with big mistakes that would kill them against a better team.

A win next week @ VT and the answer is yes without a doubt.

oh ye of little faith in CPJ’s offense.

Give it a few more weeks and the drops will go away, until then, savor the wins.

What worked at Georgia Southern will clearly work at GT, especially with Div-1 athletes.

Not to worry about CPJ, he is The MAN!

btw, give it a couple of years when he get’s “his players” into the system, truly time to get concerned in Athens.

Great effort Tech’s players and staff. It’s promising when you can win with less than 250 yards offense and 3 turnovers. This shows the potential of this program. The defense played great and the offense had some moments particularly when the chips were down. If we execute as we gain more experience the rankings will come sooner or later but keep the eye on the ball with VT next. It would’nt surprise me either way whether we’re ranked or not but keep winning and it’s done deal.

two more positive points…

  • the d backfield hasnt looked this good since before randy edsel.
  • 2 with the departure of slack gailey we can now expect the players to attend classes and improve our graduation rate.

what a deal we have. we will win at least 3-4 more games per year under cpj. we will play as a TEAM. And our graduation rate will improve.

those things will improve recruiting and create a great cycle of winning.

    Whooooooa!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just listened to the post game … -Tech was outgained in total yrds -BC had 20+ more plays than Tech -Time of poss.; not sure, but with BC having 9 more minutes in the 1st half, I can only assume they held the edge at the end of…the Jackets’ VICTORY!
And Tech still had 170+ yards rushing. VERY EASY to be optimistic when you get a win with these stats against you. Not to mention how well the D played.

Gregodawg (poster above) is obviously a ‘bitter’ dog fan … as well as a worried one. He knows, just like Tech followers know, that this offense (as long as they stay healthy) is only going to become more potent as the season rolls along. Again, 172 yards rushing in only 53 offensive plays (and they passed probably 12-18 times). Hey, “chubby” (a.k.a. Brandon Adams) just signed-on with 790 - a GA fan that gave Tech no chance in this game. And now he opens with “this was bad offense” and viewers, other than Tech fans, were scrambling to find other games to watch.

Dawg846 poster (above), on the other hand, isn’t afraid to admit the obivious … Paul Johnson is a great coach, and he knows how to win games. nuggets: -no coach in Navy history has beaten Army in his 1st 6 season - Paul Johnson did. -Navy hadn’t won 10 games in a season since 1905 - yes, 1905 - Paul Johnson did. -Since GT has joined the ACC, NO coach has won his 1st ACC game …… Paul Johnson did.
Anyone who thinks PJ will not be successful at Tech is either a moron or an idiot; take your pick.
Wait and see ….. PJ is to college football what Coach K is to college basketball. He will make players that would never get a shot at other D-1 schools (Gene Wojohowski, sp?, JJ Reddick, Jay Bilas)

I posted a few weeks ago; even sent an email to the 790 guys (Wolve & Adams) saying Tech was/is going to win BOTH the BC & VT games, and they laughed at me. Just a reminder … Defense is part of the game too, and BC & VT both lost an awful lot of offensive talent! BC was STOUT on D; I believe STOUTER than VT will be …. can you say 3-0????

It is good for the Rivalry for Tech to be competitive with the Dawgs. I like to be able to root for the Dawgs when they are not playing Tech since they are, after all, a home team. If more fans showed true sportsmanship like Dawg846, in my opinion, the Rivalry would be much better.

No. Georgia Tech should not be ranked yet. It was an ugly win. I’m pleased with the defense. The offense looked bad at times and the special teams were still kind of ‘special’. Nesbitt and Dwyer saved it on the offensive side. The kicking game was awful again, whether it was the kicker, center, holder or whatever. If GT beats VT, then the argument for ranking gets stronger. If they pound MSU, then rank ‘em for sure.

On the other side, how much do ‘ugly wins’ hurt ranked team? Not much… I’d bet an ugly win for UGA today doesn’t cost them any spots.

And speaking of ugly, I’m watching CMU at UGA. I’ve been to Athens a few times and there was never a shortage of beautiful women. I’m not seeing any of them in the shots of the crowd. What’s going on guys? Are the camera guys UF fans or something???

Like others, I’m not concerned about the Jackets being ranked this week. What excites me most about this team so far is that the defense is looking great WITHOUT looking gimmicky! You get the feeling this D can stand toe to toe with just about anyone, so as the offense gets more comfortable with the option, the Jackets could be very dangerous towards the end of the year.

We’ve won a game a against a tough opponent in BC. I like our progress, but we’ve got a few things to shore up before we should be thinking about being ranked. The D played great. Our running game was stout, but special teams need a lot of work and we need to stop putting the ball on the ground as much as we do. Ball security is killing us and it will cost us against the better teams on our schedule. If we can manage to hold onto the football next week, we should have a shot to win. I can see us being ranked if we can.

    dis n dat…

-ironfeet…which game were you watching re special teams. other than the holder for fg’s we consistantly punted well and our coverage was very good on punts and returns. our kicker had plenty of leg even though he kicked off, punted AND kicked fg’s. a few hundred snapping/holding reps will work wonders for a stong legged kicker.

-anybody wanna bet that tammy bowden’s A$$ cheeks tightened up a notch now that he sees that gt will not be an automatic win. maybe he should call cpj. lmao.

-next week should be another game like this one. but vt does NOT have the d line that bc does. they are inexperienced at qb, at wr and at running back. i like our chances.

    especially after todays’ game.

something tells me that some of those chan gailey leftovers who have not yet bought into the cpj system are soon to change their minds.

I like the comments here and I agree with most. But I want to see us 5-0 before any rankings. We have another tough game and then a few that should not be so tough. But we’ve been there before. if we get the win in blacksburg its gonna be smooth sailing for 3 weeks after that (duke, gardener webb, MSU) so if we get by VT we will go into death valley on Oct. 18th as a possible top 10 team if we start 6-0 we will be in the top 10 and getting a lot of buzz all we have to do is beat VTech
