Monday morning quarterback

Falcons fans, you’ve had more than a day to pick apart the preseason opener against Jacksonville.

Although there were many storylines in the game, it appears most of the attention was focused on the quarterback position. What are your thoughts about the performances of Chris Redman, Matt Ryan, Joey Harrington and D.J. Shockley in the game?

Let us know what you think.

Don’t worry about the Qbs. The defense is the problem. This team has a serious chance of going 0-16.

A team that cannot stop the run will be behind in games and will be worn down.

Enjoy the long season folks.

I thought Matt looked good, I was not impressed with the draft pick but I did like the fact that Matt setup quickly, made his reads and got rid of the ball. He will need to do that often with our offensive line. Also get rid of Harrington and keep Shockley.

I thought Matt did a nice job, it was only one game but saying that, it was his first. If the line continues to hold up he will be OK. As for the rest of the QBs the only other person who showed me anything is DJ Shockley, they should go ahead and cut the rest. They looked like Crap and they have been in this league for a while so go figure.

This team needs some more talent, but this coaching staff is for real. Ryan looked good for a first start. Turner looked great. Grimes could end up surprising a lot of people. Elam was disappointing.

  • Redman
  • Ryan
  • Shock
  • Shock’s numbers look aorse than they were. He had 3 drops. The INT in the end zone though was bad. Ryan isn’t ready. By mid season he should be. I would actually be open for Red/Ryan splitting snaps to start the season.

Joey-He is a proven QB in the league. You either cut Redman and keep his money. Or cut Joey and keep his. One or the other.

This question is best suited after all 4 have made their start in the pre season.

It’s only the first preseason game.

Ryan did really well. Ryan showed just from the good and bad thing that he did that he has the desire and the talent to be a winner at this level. I might be jumping the gun but I believe with a year or two of experience he will be really good. Secondly Joey is and alway has been a third string QB at best. DJ was the most impressive QB in my opinion. DJ while playing with guy that have a great chance of not making the team put together a very impressive drive. I think he should be the starter until Matt is ready. Its only far. It give the Falcons the best chance to win now and give DJ a chance to let other see what he can do. This will allow him to move on to a team that will use his talent and the Falcon can get some value in return.

Ryan was impressive. He missed on a couple passes, but he gained his confidence and made some nice throws.

Shockley was very impressive in the pocket withe 3rd team. He didn’t get much help from the recievers, but he kept his poise and made some great throws. I think they were coming too hot, since a few bounced off the WRs hands and chest.

Harrington was Harrington. I was a lil disappointed in Redman, I expected him to be the top performer. He didn’t look too comfortable.

Overall I love this offense. A lot of double tight-end sets, and plenty motion. The team looked well coached as far as assignments go, now they need to work on focus to avoid the false start penalties.

QBs looked pretty good, but my biggest concern is “NO PASS RUSH”. Our DBs played well, but you can;t stay with NFL receivers forever.

I thought Ryan played very well after a rough start. Harrington and Redman are just stiffs trying to play quarterback. There’s a reason Redman was out of the league and Harrington gets shopped all over the place. Harrington’s saving grace was the 44 yard run by the running back (who’s name escapes me). Everything else Harrington did was yard safety passes and 2 sacks. Shockley was very exciting. He did underthrow a couple of balls, but he got rid of the ball when he had to. He hit the one receiver in a bad spot (his hands) on the touchdown pass, but the receiver dropped it. The last play interception was a hurried pass and a d-lineman hit his arm. Harrington was all over the place with underthrown, behind and overthrown passes. I have a bad feeling Shockley will be the odd man out, but he was clearly the second best quarterback. The 22 yard run he made to get the first down was a thing of beauty. He was the ONLY quartrback on the roster that could have done that.

Ryan looked pretty good. He was decisive and made quick reads. He needs to work on his accuracy but the ball was always catchable. Falcons looked ok considering new offense and a new defense.

    August 11, 2008 9:15 AM | Link to this

Overall, I think Matt Ryan looked the best. As for the others I think Redman and DJ would be competing for the 2nd and 3rd position in the line up. Harrington just plain out sucked. He’s slow out of the pocket and can’t seem to make the fast read and get the ball out of his hands. Not to say DJ and Redman did much better during the game but I think I would rather have a qb that can scramble(DJ) and elude oncoming defenses then just standing in the pocket and getting sacked.

I think right now I would still let Redman start and continue to plug Ryan in as we did on Saturday.

…and oh yeah, our O Line was terrible!!

    By BullDawg Rick

    August 11, 2008 9:16 AM | Link to this

Ryan looked surprisingly good, especially for t a Rook.. He made some good passed & some not so good passed . Roddy made a great change in direction to snag the TD.. It was not a good throw. But that’s to be expected.

DJ also looked very good. Had some drops. Made a low throw rolling to the right, but he was pressured greatly with the porous O line.. His legs will buy time for him..

Redman was brought here by Petrino, so he needs to go…

Harrington cannot hit the 5 - 10 yarder in the flat to open receivers (missed 2) and when he did he led them into the ground for no gain (1).. He’s a terrible NFL QB….

My take: Start of the season -

(Ryan needs a little more learning curve)

    1) Shockley

    2) Ryan

    3) Pick up a veteran that will become available as cuts from other teams are made.

By the break - after 6 games:

    1) Ryan

    2) DJ

    3) Vet

Tony Taylor really looked good at MLB.. Love having Big Grady in the middle. But the as a WHOLE needs to step up..

Is 3 - 3 possible by the bye week??? Me thinks so…

    Go Falcons!!

    By AJ

    August 11, 2008 9:19 AM | Link to this

Ryan is head and shoulders above the other three guys. Redman and Harrington are nice to have on the team given their experience and poise.

DJ Shockley should be cut immediately.

He has shown no development in the last three years and looked terrible against the Jags 4th string defense. He totally panicked when the game was on the line and threw an easy interception to the Jaguars’ d-back. In addition, he was 5 for 14 and many of his passes were WAY off the mark (throwing a few right into the ground).

Anyone who wants Shockley on this team is either a Dawgs fan or someone who knows nothing about football, or both.

    Go Falcons!

Game looked good. It was good to see the Falcons cause some turnovers. Grimes was great. QB depth chart: Redman (for a few games) Ryan, then Shock. Aside from Shock throwing an INT to end the game, he looked good scrambling and all.

Are you people serious!!! DJ looked good? Did you see his QB rating? All of you UGA homers are ridiculous. In the crunch time of the game he threw it to noone and got it int. to lose the game. If thats what you want to see when games are on the line in the regular season than more power to you but Ryan looked the best than harrington ( only 2 qbs with TD’s) and than a tie for worst with redman and DJ. DJ made guys who will be playing in the arena league miss at the end of the game, dont think he could make sarters miss but than again you UGA fans will still be cheering him to be the starter. If you want to see a bulldog play go to athens but I want to see W’s in the Dome.

    You bulldog homers are hilarious.

Anyone that watched that game and says that DJ should be starting (or even on the team for that matter) is crazy. Shockley has an inaccurate arm and can’t see over the linemen (he is under six feet tall). He might make a good running back, but he is not an NFL caliber QB.

    Shockley must go.

Well, the dog fans, and those who desperately want a black QB, are out bright and early trying to defend the miserable Shockley performance. Amazing how they are so impressed with a 4 for 15, plus an interception in the end zone, in one quarter. You say he would have done much better if he had been playing with the “first team”….however, he is a number 4 QB, AND, he was playing against Jax 4th teamers on defense…and still only 4 for 15? Falcons must be the only team in history whose fans talk more about the 4th string QB than any other player.

    You people are delusional.

Why is it that all of the bulldog fans are bashing Harrington’s performace even though he had a better QB rating (with the 3rd and 4th stringers) than DJ did?

Great showing by Ryan. We all must keep in mind that in preseason especially the first 2 or 3 preseason games the defense do not scheme and put limited pressure on the QBs. So, do not expect that same type of showing from Ryan at the beginning of the regular season. But, I believe that his performance shows that he can be a very good NFL QB in a couple of years barring injury and as long as we put better talent on the O line to protect him. I was also impressed by Sam Baker.

By AJ, what game were you watching, everyone else saw the drop passes from DJ. Also in the 4th quarter, those receivers that DJ was playing with will be in the Arena League next season. DJ did a great job compared to what he was playing with not against. I hope DJ can catch the eye of another team and go on to have a good career. It is obvious by comments made by people like you and all the hatting GT fans, that it is not in the cards for him here in Atlanta.

Although I am a bulldog fan, I saw the game and have to face facts: Shockley was not as good as I had hoped. He missed a few open receivers and was just not as accurate as I remembered him being at UGA.

I guess DJ has not adjusted to the speed of the NFL game. The last pay was inexcusable. Hopefully, he will paly better next week and still have a shot at making this team..

AJ, I must have watched a different game than you. I thought DJ looked very good overall. Too many drops and trying to force it at the end of the game.
I was VERY impressed with Ryan’s leadership, poise and overall comfort of running the offense. He looked the best, although he still has a lot to learn. His hard counts, quick decisions and overall self assuredness will bode well for our team!

CUT HARRINGTON IMMEDIATELY! He could not do anything! Perhaps our Defense looked like they could not get a rush on the QB because the coaching staff ran vanilla? Linebackers and DB’s looked Great.

Overall, the Oline looked better than expected, but need much improvement.

There were also no eruptions in attitudes when mistakes were made.

The Team finally has a real coach and looked very professional.

No I’m no UGA fan, but I saw the game. DJ looked poised and he made some nice throws. His rating was low due to dropped passes, that were all accurate. Unfortunately these clowns want DJ out for other reasons that has nothing to do with football. Who’s the expert here? Matt, what does seeing “over the linemen” have to do with DJ’s performance? So, any QB “under six feet tall” isn’t fit for the position? If you noticed, the pick thrown at the end of the game was with unblocked Jags trying to take his head off. Anywho, no question that Ryan will be given the wheel eventually…regardless. Until he does, either give it to DJ or Redman. I won’t even mention that 4th QB’s name. By the way, I must say that it’s a relief to hear some intelligent football talk on this blog!

Dude-Give DJ a break. He is coming off of ACL surgery and was still moving like that. Should he be the starter HECK NO. Can he be a solid back up in this league. HECK YEAH. A pocket passing back up QB will get eaten up. DJ would bring a different element with his mobility IF the Falcons ever had to use him. It was his first game back since the tear. Give the guy a break.

So would you rather keep a QB that yo are paying millions to in Harrington and or Redman…which everyone would agree they aren’t anything special….or do you cut one. Save the money and use it elsewhere, and keep Shock and his salary.

For those of you who are indifferent with the performance of one “DJ Shockley.” Just think for a moment…where would he be had it not been for a season-ending injury last year? Probably via for the number one position! Of course, Harrington nor Redman had injuries last year - and you thought Harrington was better?! Yes, you are truly a talent scout. I bet you thought the movie “sluggers wife” was about a real baseball player too!

Albeit, Redman played fairly well - Harrington remained an indecisive and oft fraid looking quarterback. For the talent scout (AJ) who believes Shock hasn’t made improvements, Dude…open your eyes!

All in all, I think the Falcons will probably have a better year than anticipated. However, only when special teamers give us consistent play.

Not that he should start, but Harrington has played for three of the worst teams of the past 20 years. And all got even worse after he left. He shows up, works hard, has the respect of his teammates. I hope he wins the No. 2 spot just to tick off the irrational haters.

DJ looked good except the pick. Lets remember that he drove down field for what would have been a game tying field goal in a regular season game. He had two chances to score and he got anxious. Nobody is mentioning the perfect pass to the endzone a couple of plays earlier that a proven WR would have pulled in for a TD. It was well defended but perfectly thrown. At least 3 drops. He throws hard and needs top flight WRs to pull in the throws. Not 4th stringers. I won’t lety my hatred of the Bulldogs cloud my judgement. He has talent. I think he can be developed as a backup QB that can do more than just “manage” a game if the starter is hurt.

It’s still too early to name the starter. That was only one preseason game. Ryan looked the best, then I’d say it was a tie between Harrington, and Shockley. Ryan looked pretty good but needs to work on his accuracy. Harrington led them to a touchdown, but he seemed to be getting rid of the ball too soon at times. There was one play that he hiked the ball and threw to Finneran right after he hiked it and Finneran didn’t have a chance to be ready for the pass. Shockley looked really good moving the ball downfield, and should have had a touchdown but the reciever dropped it. But he needs to work on putting some touch on his passes, and his accuracy. That last play he threw for an interception, he should have took the sack. Then they could have called a time out and had one more play to run. Then he could have just threw it for grabs if know one was open. Redman, looked the worse, he just didn’t really do anything. But he played the least amount of time in the game, I really would have liked to seen more of him. So I would say that all QBs showed some good stuff and some stuff they need to work on. One more thing on Harrington and Shockley, to be fair their weren’t with the starting linemen like Redmen and Ryan, and it showed. They didn’t have as much time to throw, their lines were breaking down quicker. So I hope that Coach Smith is telling the truth, because I think Shockely and Harrington deserve a chance to see what they can do with the first string offense against the first string defense. Then once we’ve seen all the QBs with the first string, then we can make a decision on who to start.

  • FIRST HE SHOWED THAT HE HAS AN NFL ARM. THAT BALL ZIPS OUT OF HIS HAND.

  • HE COMPLETED A SLANT TO HIS RIGHT FOR A FIRST DOWN WHEN HIS RECEIVER WAS TIGHTLY COVERED. THIS WAS TROY AIKMAN’s SIGNATURE PLAY FOR DALLAS.

  • HE SHOWED HE HAS RECOVERED FROM HIS INJURY BASED ON THE FOURTH DOWN RUN.

  • AS FAR AS HEIGHT. JEFF GARCIA AND DREW BREES ARE DOING JUST OK IN THE LEAGUE. LAST TIME I CHECKED DAN MAGUIRE DID NOT HAVE MUCH OF A CAREER IN THE LEAGUE.

Okay, back to the football talk…

Until we get a solid O-line, I think a mobile QB is not only a plus but necessary. I’m not sure how mobile Ryan is. He might be, I just haven’t seen enough to evaluate his mobility. Anybody got any insight on Ryan’s scrambling ability?

Anyone that thinks Harrington looked even REMOTELY good was drinking heavily that night. Redman……2 x 3 and outs and an interception. You people bagging on Shockley can’t see the forest for the tree and know NOTHING about football. Didja see the drops? Didja see the pass that should have been a touchdown lay right in the receivers hands to be dropped? Shockley got rid of the ball when he had to. Not great, but a good start. Ryan was clearly the best. Harrington is slow as molassas and couldn’t throw it in the ocean.

Ryan looked good, but like others said, that was one game. I, unlike the majority, did like the draft pick however, and do believe Matty will be a star in this league. I watched numerous Boston College games, and he looked like an NFL QB in those games. I keep going back to the BC/GT game last year. Matt picked apart that GT defense. Say what you will DAWG fans (and I am one of them), the one thing GT has had going for them the past few years was that Jon Tenuta (sp) defense. Ryan picked it clean!

Shockley looked better than his numbers. He had absolutely no time to throw the ball whatsoever. He scrambled well and through a 15 yard slant pass with extreme precision. The INT was a bad decision on his part, hopefully he will learn from that. I know that he felt the pressure to get it in the end zone, given that we weren’t going for a tie, but he had one more play had he not forced that pass.

I thought that Matt Ryan had a good preseason look. That being said, I do not think that he’s ready to start yet. Why? Because I watched his passes and many of those passes were not as accurate as they would be needed. There were passes that were thrown behind the receiver. The pass that was the touchdown, Roddy White was wide open, so there was a breakdown in Jacksonville’s secondary.

But he showed good poise and I think he’ll get better. But I wouldn’t start him first day. That may set him back.

Now Chris Redman was OK, but just speaking in terms of playmaking, I liked DJ Shockley. Shockley was playing with the backups, so I wasn’t even looking at his stats. I was looking at his passes. Except for the interception, he looked accurate. Plus, he was poised. And he was hitting receivers on the hands.

Plus, Shockley was elusive in the pocket. He showed me that he can stay in the pocket, as well as move around. And he was able to avoid sacks.

To me, I would start Redman. I would make Matt Ryan the starter by week 3 or 4. And I would keep Shockley just in case someone gets hurt. Harrington?

Shade, I agree. However, one must admit that Harrington continues to make the same terrible decisions that has plagued him throughout his career. His pocket awareness and accuracy are Horrible.

Harrington simply does not have what it takes between the ears to warrant a spot on the team.

I would rather have a QB make a bad decision every once in awhile than have one afraid to make a decision and is hamstrung by the fear of a mistake. That typifies Harrington’s play in my opinion.

Oh boy its football season. I must say we as a whole looked pretty good on saturday.D-Line needs a lot of help in the middle or its going to be a long season.Brent Grimes is the truth. Matt will start day one and DJ will be back up i say keep redman over harrington. I cant wait to see more, but if ryan continues to play well and the o-line keeps getting better we can have a good season.8-8.

DJ Looked awesome! Whenever there were typical plays that most QB’s make, he did other stuff instead! That’s so cool! When he ran that one time it was like… like… wow he can run!

Yeah, those other guys might have more talent, and experience, and better ratings, but DJ… wow dude he’s just… something else.

I think Matty Ice did great. I think the idea of starting Redman was just to take some of the pressure off Ryan. As you see Redman didnt last long. 1. Ryan 2. Shockley/Redman

I predict us going about 7-9…If you think out of all the turmoil last year we lost 4 games by 7 or less points all in the fourth quarter those games were lost (thanks D. Hall).

I did not see Redman or Ryan. Harrington was terrible and Shockley was unimpressive. I think the only way DJ makes this team is if Harrington is just so terrible that he plays himself off the team (quite possible). Also from what I read Shockley has looked pretty good in practice. As for the game, DJ had one nice pass, a really good run and evaded the rush well, but overall his passing was awful.

i agree with a lot of y’all comments and i dont’ agree with some but each of you all have some very strong points as for ryan yea he did good but that was only a preseason game shock did good with the scrubs he had out there with him so he has to move up on the dept chart i feel like the battle should be out of dj and ryan to be honest especailly since they signed ryan to a 72 millon dollar deal so that will help him out on the dept chart also everyone know’s if dj didnt’ get hurt last year he would have been starting i think dj has to get over the fear of his knee because when he through that pick he look like he was scared to getting hit and he panic becuase there the pass was weak and was supposed to get int. he should be good next game and he shouldn’t freeze up

Calm down people. Ryan threw several really bad passes. I think he will be good eventually, but Redman should start unless he is playing terrible and we are losing games because we can’t score. Remember Redman only played two series, and tried to go deep twice. Last year Redman had 100+ qb rating in 4 real games - not preseason garbage. Also, we should let Ryan learn a little by watching.

I was very surprised by what I saw. Although I did see some throws behind the targets, I believe that will only take a little time to correct. Brent Grimes looks like a GOOD replacement that will get better. The offensive line is young but learning fast and they are very competitive. Good outing, but I want to see more., The wins will come with good execution, as for now, let’s just continue to work hard.

  • Redman made a couple bad throws, but last year he showed that he can get things done and deserves a shot. Barring some really poor performances over the next three games, he should be the week 1 starter.

Ryan looked sharp and hopefully will continue to make good decisions throughout the preseasons. I can’t remember him making any really bad or risky throws, and I liked the way he jumped on the ball after the muffed snap. Unless Redman is horrible over the next few games, I don’t think it will be a good idea to start Ryan right away in the regular season. Give it to Redman and ease Ryan into it when necessary. It’s a matter of time, and the pressure will be a lot less if he eases into the role.

Harrington was in classic Joey form, not good. It’s too bad because he seems like a good guy, but he’s got to go. We paid him a nice chunk of money last year with no results, and we stand to pay him another decent chunk this year if we keep him on the roster.

DJ Shockley was exciting and made some great plays with his feet. Based on the fact that he was playing with the 5th stringers, I thought he did pretty well. The final INT was disappointing, but other than that DJ showed that he has a lot of upside.

I don’t think we pay DJ very much, and it seems like it would be a lot wiser of the Falcons to hang on to him and to drop Joey. DJ has some great traits: a strong arm, quick feet, smart, and a good leader. I see a lot more potential with DJ than with Joey,

Roddy White is an absolute beast: Strong, physical, fast, and able to make plays. I think he will have a great season.

Turner looked good, although the line is awful. He and Jerious should complement each other well. Norwood’s speed on the outside looked amazing as usual.

Grimes looked great at DB. Our secondary actually looked good in general, something I never thought I’d hear myself say.

Our DL and OL both suck. Can’t stop the run, and can’t block for runners. Turner and Jerious will have to make people miss to be successful.

Looking forward to the next one.

The most impressive aspect of Ryan’s game was his overall control of the situation. He never looked rattled, and was able to hard count the defense offsides. He audibled, and kept a level head when something went wrong. Also, his ability to make quick decisions and get rid of the ball fast allows him to be a smidge off target since the defenders do not have time to reach the receiver yet. I think he will be VERY good!!!

First off cut Harrington He’s taking up snaps and go ahead and have the decency to allow him time to catch on with someone else. Or maybe he can go work at Lowes with Chuck James. Anyways, forget Bulldog loyalty. Shockley needs to go! We can’t keep him on the team just because he played in Athens. Redman needs to start and allow Ryan to learn a little. Ryan may be better right now, but he will be a lot better if we allow him a little time to learn.

I thought he looked good out there. Ryan was good, plus we’ve invested millions in him, so of course he would be the starter. I would use DJ like a Hines Ward type player. Have a few plays in there where Ryan could toss to DJ..fake the run, then throw a bomb to the WRs. Those of you who insist on keeping Joey..are you serious?

So quit being loyal to the Bulldogs and quit lobbying Coach Smith to keep the homegrown QB. Face it, He sucks! He lost the game on a lame duck toss into the endzone on Saturday night. Ryan looked pretty good but did not hit a lot of guys in stride. Threw behind a lot of guys and the receivers had to stop or reach behind them to catch the balls. No big deal. I’m sure he will make the adjustment. DJ looked pretty good also. Two dropped passes. Zipped a pass down the field on the money that would have been a completion had the receive not been interfered with. Pass into the end zone was perfect. Defender did a great job breaking it up. Threw the ball away twice after scrambling to avoid sacks. All of the other quarter backs would have been sacked for big losses on those plays. His knee did not seem to bother him at all.

    Stop Hatin’

DJ had a great first game back to real action. This guy had major knee surgery and apparently is fully recovered. I had the same injury/surgery last August and know what it’s like (for the record, I’m still not fully recovered). Real football evaluators would give DJ a better than average grade on his performance. While he may have played against 3rd & 4th string players, he was also playing with 3rd & 4th stringers. As for those who says he only had one good pass (the slant), this is not accurate. He put the football in the right spot on two passes to the end zone. The first one was a perfect floater over the top where the cornerback was not looking but fortunate enough to raise his arm at the right time and cause a deflection. The other was a dropped pass by a receiver just at the goal line (with a corner/safety on his back). I agree with one other poster who says these catches may have been made with our 1st string receivers. It’s obvious where DJ started out on the QB pecking order, however, he didn’t do anything to hurt himself (even with the INT). Ability to move around in the pocket is just as essential as being able to stand firm in there at times. He has been groomed all his life to play that position and has the intelligence and ability to perform, given the chance.

I think he proved that by winning all but two games he started at Georgia (31-30 loss to Auburn: 304yds2tds & 38-35 loss to W.VA: 277yds3tds). He was 3rd behing Vince Young and Reggie Bush in AP Player of the Year voting and acknowledged by at least one NFL scout that when coming out of college had more potential than Vince Young. I point out these college wins and stats because he was given a chance and performed exceptionally well when expected to do so. At GA he could have left and started somewhere else instead of playing behind Greene but the team needed him to stay. Now at GA he wants to stay and prove himself and needs the team to allow him to stay.

**It’s just the first preseason game but 1st game grades go as follows:

    Redman - C-

    Ryan - A-

Harrington - F+ (plus cause he at least showed up the game)

    Shockley - B-**

Is it just me, or a lot of people on here judging Joey Harrington on his performance last season? He and Redman had almost identical number of passes (7 for Harrington, 6 for Redman), but Harrington out passed him by 50+ yards. Also, Redman’s two drives amounted to 21 yards and an interception. Harrington led 3 drives for a total of 50 yards, a field goal, and a touchdown.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Joey Harrington should be our starter this year, but I think we need to let he, Redman, and Shockley each play with the first and second team a little more in the preseason, and then cut ties with which ever one is the worst performing of the three.

And as for Shockley, I think he’s getting preferential treatment from the fans simply because played at Georgia. If he had gone somewhere else, even somewhere like Georgia Tech, “fans” would have been calling for him to be gone a long time ago, IMO.

Does it really matter? Most of you people are still talking the same smack that you were before the performances on the field. There is an agenda for most that will never fairly evaluate all 4 of them. If DJ had 1 yard in 25 attempts there would still be the ones that say yeah but he’s great and he is DA Future (what a joke) and if Joey had 300 yards and 5 TD’s there would be ones making up excuses, like well he only got that because of, something someone else did. Bottom line - who scored and who didn’t. I don’t think after 1 game, each playing against different levels of talent, nothing can be evaluated. Maybe Chris Redman could be since he did get the advantage of playing with the starting OLINE. I don’t think anyone could fairly evalute DJ or Joey from this game. Let them have their opportunity with the 1st string and then we could fairly judge.

If DJ Shockley can get more snaps with the first team- and if he can actually perform well with that team- Vick lovers and Vick haters can unite.

Why? Because those Vick lovers will have that exciting player who can hurt you with both his arm and his feet. And there’ll be some excitement as well as accuracy (wouldn’t that be perfect?) And those Vick haters wouldn’t have to see Vick on the field. Plus, I don’t even think DJ Shockley has a goldfish!

Shockley looked good except for that interception at the end of the game, he just threw it up for grabs.

Thomas Brown looked pretty good I thought, I hope he makes the team.

The cornerback, Number 20, I didn’t catch his name during the game, but this kid played tough. He almost had an interception early in the game and then he broke up a pass in the end zone, I thought he broke his back the way he came down. But this kid played hard, I was really impressed with him.

Jason Elam is a bust already! Bring back Morten Anderson if you have to, Elam is going to cost us some games, I can see that now.

Just ignore all the Dawgs and homers rooting for their boy Shockley. FACT: DJ is NOT an NFL quarterback, he’s a scrub trying to catch on. Joey Harrington is your 6-year veteran Pro - and everybody outside of Dawg country knows Joey was next best to Ryan in the game. Joey led the team to most points, had good numbers and moved the chains.

The AP wire story and anyone outside of Dawg town said the same. Last year they hated Joey because he is proven better than their beloved dogfighter. This year they hate him because he’s going to mentor Matt Ryan, and provide a very capable backup role. Between Harrington, Ryan, and Finneran we’ve got 3 good Irishmen on board.

Can you IMAGINE what the idiots would be saying if Joey Harrington had choked like DJ and thrown that pick in the endzone??? HAhahaha….

Who cares if Vick plays in a start up league. It’s all about the NFL. F you and and f your link you posted about a story that has nothing to do about Falcons football.

Now back to the Falcons. Jamaal Anderson was the biggest disappointment to me for the night. He looked terrible. If he does not improve before the season start, I think we will have to look for a decent pass rushing DE on the waiver wires. Another Bulldog ,Miller looked good at DE though. But Anderson a top 10, 1st round pick should be producing better than he has. He was getting manhandled at the line. If Anderson can just play up to his draft status our D-Line would be much better and our D-fense would be much better. If he can’t rush the QB I say lets put some weight on him and move him to tackle and see what he can do before we cut him. Hell I would be happy if he could just stay on his feet and stop getting knocked to the ground every other play.

You’d think he’d set NFL single game passing records while substituting for a starter or had won a college championship, with the undue support and unrealistic belief in this “potential” he has … I’ve seen nothing yet (whether in practice, pre-season or college) that makes me think he’s a QB2 in the NFL, let alone a starter … anyone want to offer a LOGICAL explaination and not one that’s followed by a “GO DAWGS” or a “WOOF WOOF”??? … And before I get the “You’re just a Dawg Hater, I graduated from UGA”

Forget the QB situation, the offense actually was respectable if not impressive. Eventually when it slows down for Ryan he’ll be putting the ball in the right places, at least he’s choosing the proper receiver that’s huge.

The DT situation is dire. The DL is absolutely dreadful and thusly, watch out CB’s.

This team will win 5 or 6 games ugly and lose the rest, hopefully close.

I think they’ll fight and struggle. Nice to see guys that care out there fighting.

    Roddy Looks AWESOME!

    August 11, 2008 12:07 PM | Link to this

Ryan surprised me; I think he’ll be an excellent starter. He should be starting by week 8. Harrington is a nice guy, but he’s clearly frightened. Despite that, he STILL holds on to the ball too long and STILL doesn’t see wide open receivers. Shockley deserves the third QB slot. Yes, he was playing against their 4th string, but their fourth string is a lot better than ours. Any of you who bothered taping the game and going back over it will see the Jacksonville defenders were practically beating the snap to him and he was still making plays. He got over excited at the end, but he’d already led us to what would have been the game tying field goal (and actually the game winning TD earlier if the receiver had been paying attention). If he goes instead of Harrington I’ll be surprised.

The 1st string o-line looked better than I expected. But I wish they’d go ahead and just admit a 2nd round pick for Ojinaka was a total waste.

Roddy’s a keeper, Douglas looked pretty good, and even though Jenkins is a bust as a 1st rounder because he’s scared to play hard, he’s still a decent possession receiver.

The d-line scares me. With Abraham always injured and Anderson solid but uninspiring, we may yet again have to draft a DE soon. And Grady only taking 15-20 snaps a game is going to further expose how weak the line is up the middle. Our DT’s are awful.

I still say with this soft sked they go 6-10.

My question to everyone is which is more important in determining who should be the starting QB; stats (attempts/completions/passer rating), or the given situation and circumstances in which one had to perform regardless of the outcome.

I will agree the Matt Ryan looked good for a first year QB. Regardless of what anyone thinks, Matt Ryan is going to be the starting QB very soon. From a Stats stand point he performed the best.

In viewing things by situation and circumstance, I focus on the other QBs because they are the ones truly fighting for a roster spot. In that regard, DJ performed the best. I say that based on pressures on and off the field. Off the field, DJ is last on the depth chart, coming off injury, and had the least amount of time in this new system. On the field, he work with many players who wont make the team and will be cut this week. In the last two minutes he kept the chain moving and put the team in a position to tie or win the game. The INT at the end was bad and has to be considered, but I still thinks he better than Harrington or Redman in that he can elevate the performace of the people around him.

Finally thought, if the competetion for QB is fair, then the other QBs should be placed in the game in the 4th qtr to work with players who wont make the team.

As a alum of GT, I will say this. Talent is talent no matter where it comes from. DJ Shockley looked good as he did in the Dome scrimmage the week before. The dropped TD pass made in the final momments of the 4th qtr had great touch on it. The receiver just dropped it! (bottom line) Redman threw an interception in the scrimmage on a defense that he sees everyday and did it against one he doesn’t on Friday. Ryan is still learning but shows considerable promise once he really gets the jitters out. Let’s face it no one really goes full speed until the game counts in Sept. so don’t expect that same consideration in the regular season. There is a NFL defensive player waiting to welcome him into the NFL. Harrington could not quarterback in Pop Warner football with his experience in the NFL. He must know some Jedi mind tricks to keep surviving. ultimately the Defense does need work. Jamaal Anderson needs to be cut! Argue that!

Am I the only one who realizes that Harrington put up more points than any of the others? I do not believe that Redman had as long in the game as the others and was not able to adapt to the rhythm of the game. I was pleased with Ryan and believe he has the best potential. I would like to see Redman given more playing time before making a final decision. Since we all know the Shockley thing is strictly a UGA bragfest, no comment on his performancce.

By LG, the reason UGA fans love DJ is because he did something few athletes today do. He showed great loyalty by not leaving UGA after it was clear that David Green was going to be the starter and DJ was not going to get his chance until his senior season and he did not complain. Then during that senior season he lead us to the SEC championship and played lights out against WV in the Sugar bowl. Many believe that if WV had not faked that punt and DJ would have gotten another possesion he would have lead us to the win. Plus he is a talented QB. He is better than Quincy Carter and Quincy was having a good NFL career before the drug problems. Now you claimed you are a graduate of UGA but you don’t understand that. Come on man. But anyway I hope that explains our love for DJ. I wanted him to start over MV7 before the dog fighting scandal, thats how much respect I have for DJ’s character and talent, and I am as hood as it gets. But to me its team first. I am a true fanatic. I have an UGA DJ 3 jersey hanging in my closet, believe it.

The Falcons as a team looked fundamentally sound. The O-line has a lot of room for improvement and I do agree the pass rush must get better. As far as the QB’s DJ looked good not great I know if he is given the oppertunity to play with the 1st O he will look even better. Ryan is the future and he looked sound however he is not ready to be QB-1 yet. Lets allow this kid to master the offense, and Demitrof improve our O-Line and then put in. But for right now it should DJ’s job. He was the better performer. Shockley did well until the interception in the endzone. That was a terrible decision to make in the redzone. The whole drive he put together reminded me of Ron Mexico the Dog Killer. No blocking, crazy athletic ability, and poor decision making.

Ryan didn’t impress me all that much either. Roddy saved him on a ton of plays. I’ll cut him a break because he’s a rookie, but many of his passes were thrown behind receivers.

Redman needs more time with the first team. If he’s going to be leading this team to start the season, he needs more snaps.

Harrington wasn’t terrible. His numbers were good, but as always, he looked afraid to make a pass downfield. He doesn’t give us a chance to win.

    I got:

    Redman Ryan Shockley

Maybe we’ll pick up Cullpepper halfway through the season.

What yall need to do is research the history thats not in the books but in your parents and grandparents Closet. OK Im done Have a Blessed Day

PEOPLE,MY COMPUTER IS ILL,SO EXCUSE THE CAPS. I HATE TO LISTEN TO FANS EVALUATION OF PLAYERS BECAUSE YOU THINK WITH YOUR HEART,YOUR HATE,AND YOUR EYES..WHAT? YOUR EYES? YES!!

YOU CAN USE YOUR EYES,BUT,ADD KNOWLEDGE OF THE PLAYERS POSITION,HIS FUNDAMENTALS FOR HIS POSITION THAT ONE MUST HAVE,AND FORGET THE NUMBERS..

YOU LOOK FOR HIS AWARENESS OF WHAT THE DEFENSE IS DOING AS HE IS BARKING OUT SIGNALS..IS HE LOOKING AROUND AND SEEING WHAT YOU SEE WHILE YOU ARE IN THE STANDS AND YOU HAVE A BROADER LOOK ON THE FIELD,IS HE POINTING OUT THE HOT READS TO HIS LINEMEN TO WHERE THE PRESSURE IS GONNA COME FROM,AND WHAT DOES HE DO THEN..

WHERE IS HE PUTTING THE BALL??

HE NEEDS TO PUT IT IN THE AREA THAT IS CATCHABLE,CATCHING THE RECIEVERS IN STRIDE,AND ONE OVERLOOKED

    IS HE READING THE DEFENSE??

HOW IS HE SETTING HIS FEET??

FROM WATCHING FILM ALL DAY YESTERDAY,I LIKE SHOCKLEY BETTER THAN THE REST.

HE DID BETTER WITH LITTLE HELP THAN THE OTHERS DID WITH MORE..

This DJ thing is crazy. I thought he looked fairly good but c’mon on. If he shows more in the next couple of games he should make the team. Harrington looked awful. I really believe he needs to go.

What am i reading on this blog. The best QB out there was D.J. SHOCKLEY. His throws was accurate and he put every ball, but the INT where it should be. He had a lot of dropped balls by the WRS. But the truth is the fan dont want him, because he reminds you of MV7. If we are to put the past behind us. We shouldn’t fault a guy that seem like MIKE. Matt Ryan look bad all his passes was either under thrown or thrown behind the WRS. Let’s give all the credit to RODDY WHITE for making up for his sorry a$$$ future QB. One more thing he couldn’t handle the first stream of the JAGS. Everything happened after the stars came out. I want to see #3 with the first squad. The run game looks good. But if teams only feel like we can run only they will line 8 in the box. Defense please find a replacement for 98 anderson they ran his way like it wasn’t anyone there. text to be linked

i think he should be the starting qb for the Falcons cause he is throwing the ball reallly well so far during the preseason. I think we still need to address the CB position, how about signing Ty Law? and we also need to get more people in OL.

i think Atlanta will do fine, i see us probably going 8-8 or 9-7.

Start Harrington. He is our most experienced Vet QB, has showed the best overall in Camp, and had a solid game. The QUESTION is: will the Team make the decision based on what’s best for the Team - OR give in to the crowd of drunk Dawgs yelling for their boy?

Or maybe, since Blank wants to sell tickets, lets play the scrub Shockley - and release our real QB’s Harrington and Redman?? Matter of fact lets cut ALL veterans, and go with local college players from UGA and Tech. Would that make these “fans” happy???

I really saw a few good things about the Falcons, one thing I liked the way the pursued the football, even the back-ups moved to the ball. Ryan looked good just need to give hom time. I wouldn’t start him until I was sure about my offensive line, can they protedt him.Redmon proned to be sufficient. D.J. brings a different perspective to the game. In right situations he could be a Good asset. Agree with previous blogger I like you personaly Joey but you should be the odd man out.Still don’t understand first and goal and throwing four plays, Why not try to run it with one of those big fullbacks. Liked what I saw in coaching, hope Coach Smith will go for the win like that at the end of the game during the regular season. It’s so good just to get back to football. It’s time to move on know mentioning of M.V. during the rest of the season please.

Ok some of yall are just str8 idiots! DJ Shockley looked very good, most of his passes were on the money! Perfect passes, 4th stringers just can’t catch!! He was quick on his feet, and made plays!! So the people saying he was terrible are just racist probably!! Harrington and redman suck! Cut em both! Not saying dj should be the starter but it should defintly be up in there air between him and matt ryan!! But my vote goes for dj as it stands now!! If u don’t like that than be gon hater

TRUTH HURTS, I agree w/ you about Anderson. I know they say give him a chance but he’s 1 season & top of a pre-season deep now & I can’t say that I see any flashes of excellence. Here’s hoping Abraham stays healthy. As for the middle of the defense, I’ve got to say I was a little surprised they were running over us w/ Grady in the game. If someone from the other DT or MLB position doesn’t emerge as a plug for the middle, we’re in trouble.

After reviewing the film,DJs feet will keep him on the team and he received no help from his young receivers.Harrington could be a future Hall of Famer,Redman needs to use his current position as an NFL qb to set up contacts to sell insurance.Ryan is a work in progress, received a lot of help from his receivers and should be fine.DJ and Ryan will split time this year and Harrington will retire and become his second cousins,Padraigs, caddy. This will allow him to come back in two years with another team(49ers)and lead them to 3 more Super Bowls. He will retire as the top rated passer in history and makes his former antagonist eat crow.

Dogkiller, based on your username (& Harrington’s NFL track record), I get the feeling that your desire for Harrington to be our starting QB actually has less to do with his football ability & more to do with what/who DJ represents to you. Start Harrington…LOL…LOL…LOL.

I thought Redman was not on top of his game. Matt Ryan shocked me with his poise and maturity and that’s what the fans are looking for. Harrington?? Well, I think it is time for him to move on. DJ Shockley was very impressive coming back from a major knee injury. I think it was very exciting to watch him. Besides the one mistake (interception) I thought he looked pretty decent. My opinion for the rotation for the regular season:

  • Matt Ryan
  • DJ Shockley
  • Chris Redman
  • By O.D

    August 11, 2008 2:33 PM | Link to this

Matt looked good but clearly he needs to get use to the speed of the NFL. Most all his passes were thrown behind the receiver. Roddy made a nice adjustment to the TD pass. DJ looked more impressive then any of the qb’s. His arm looked stronger then the others. Yes he throws an int at the end of the game. Considering the fact that DJ was with the 6 & 7 unit, would either of the other qb’s would have put us in a position to win or tie the game. Remember the 4th and 12 or 4th and 15 when DJ scrambles to get the first down after the play packet broke down. Joey looked liked Joey. Joey is a check down qb. He is by for the worst qb on the team. Joey looked horrible in Det and he hasn’t changed in Atl. DJ clearly gives us the best chance of wining right now. He will not only make things happen with his arm but also with his legs. Not quit as fast or allusive as Vick, but the similarity is there. Once giving a chance you will see which qb is best suited for the Falsons.

Are you guys really trying to have this conversation on the first PRESEASON game? Didn’t Redman pretty much light it up the last four games of the REGULAR SEASON???? Didn’t he get NFC Offensive Player of the Week the final week?

Give it a couple more preseason games before you make any judgements on ANY of the quarterbacks…

    By NewnanDawgCF

    August 11, 2008 3:27 PM | Link to this

I really think it is too early to have a definitive answer here, but I’ll bit on this conversation - First, since being a first round pick, we have to assume Ryan will start at some point, and I thought he did pretty well for his first taste of live NFL action. He handled some blitzes, rarely seen in preseason, very calmly and seemed to be a good game “manager.” He obviously needs work, but looks to have the potential to be an excellent QB. I thought Roddy White looked phenomenal and helped Ryan out with some so-so throws.

As for everyone else, I think that the Falcons almost have to keep just one of Redman/Harrington, because they have such similar attributes to bring to the table. Both have experience to offer, but neither will probably ever start anywhere except for the 1st couple of games with the Falcons this year. Then, I think you keep DJ as the current #3. Yes, I am a Dawg fan, but he obviously is not a starter right now. I thought he had some brilliant moments and some “oh crap!” moments Sat. I will say that not only does he have the physical capabilities to have tremendous upside, I have met him several times and he is very intelligent, is a natural leader, has a great team attitude, all just as important as talent in a QB.

I feel very confident that at least we have no worries of any of these 4 QBs commiting felonies of a brutal nature.

My current lineup 1. Redman (only 2 games, then switch with Ryan) 2. Ryan 3. Shockley (could eventually move to #2 behind Ryan if he lives up to his potential

I’m puzzled by all the hostility to Harrington. I haven’t seen this much disgust for a QB since Jeff George was here. Harrington may not be a Hall of Famer but he is very serviceable. He led the offense to 10 of the 17 points we scored the other night. Why don’t we just wait and see how the 3 remaining preseason games go before we show the guy the door. If he’s cut he’ll be picked up by another team because there’s a dearth of experienced QBs in the league.

    August 11, 2008 4:03 PM | Link to this

I agree with JHD and disagree greatly with siskal. What’s all the hatin’ toward Joey? The way I see the stats from Saturday night, we was the 2nd best QB to play. QB rating isn’t some voodoo, it clearly indicates a QB’s effectiveness for a game.

It appears to me that Chris Redman was no better than DJ Shockley, and that they both STANK! Combined they were 7 of 21 for 76 yards and two INTs. Good God!

Let’s wait until preseason is over to evaluate who needs to stay or who needs to go, but after week one it’s: Ryan, Harrington, Shockley, Redman.

    By Walter Camp

    August 11, 2008 4:26 PM | Link to this

There’s a reason Redman couldn’t play in QB-starved Baltimore and was selling insurance until his former college coach (the real Satan) showed up in Atlanta. I think he should be the one to leave. Harrington has played well enough to back up Ryan.

It’s ONE preseason game! When we have a starting QB going against some of the better defenses in the league then we can judge talent! I’m thinking a 2-14 season, as for Redman….trade him immediately!

Shockley sucked. A UGA QB starts for one season and he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread? Get real homies!

Ryan looked OK but he needs to learn for a few games and not thrown into starting quite yet. Protect the investment.
