Falcons-Jaguars post-game blog
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Rookie QB Matt Ryan completed 9 of 15 passes but the Falcons lost 20-17 to the Jaguars in the preseason opener Saturday.
How do you think Ryan looked?
How about new coach Mike Smith? What are your impressions of him after his first game?
Which Falcons players impressed you, or disappointed you? Kicker Jason Elam? New running back Michael Turner? QB D.J. Shockley?

So far Michael Turner’s looking good, Matt Ryan’s probably a little nervous but that was a good touchdown catch by Roddy White from Ryan. It also seemed like the offensive line started doing better when Matt Ryan got in the game. Anybody else agree?

Matt Ryan >>>>>>> Redman and Harrington.
Once he got past the initial screwups, he looked great on that scoring drive.
And for those who were singing the praises of Redman after last season, need I remind you that he only had decent games against poor defenses and Seattle”s backups? Let’s not forget the 0.0 rating he put up against the Bucs.
I still wouldn’t start Ryan at the start of the season, but after 8 games, I say let him play.

Actually, I think the team looked pretty good for the first preseason game against a playoff team. Atlanta managed a tie through much of the second quarter. Compared to last year…this looked like a football team that could win a few games. I’m still worried about the d-line though.

Man, I’d start Redmond in the first reg. season game…but if he looked like he did in this preseason game I put Ryan in. The only thing that would stop me from playing Ryan would be a porous O-Line. If Redmond is getting killed because of the O-Line…I’d have to let Ryan cool his heals a while.

Josh,
I agree with you. The O-Line looked better with Ryan. I think Redmond hold the ball and is too inaccurate for the O-Line to have much confidence. With Ryan’s quick release and accuracy…they don’t have to hold the blocks as long and they are more confident in the success of the play.

Jamaal Anderson is starting to look more and more like a mistake. Hopefully he’ll break out in year two like Mario Williams did. Ryan has a f*in cannon and has showed some poise. Redman looked like hot trash, which I always expected. Get Norwood the ball…he’s a monster and will tire defenses out after Turner pounds them.
The O-Line looks better than expected and the secondary is not as bad as most fans thought it would be. If Grimes had a little more height, he’d be great. Good coverage skills. I like the mean streak in Tyson Clabo. He and Baker could be a good pair on the ends.
Overall, I like the swagger of the team. Trash talking, knocking people over after the play. Their definitely playing with a chip on their shoulders which could lead to an extra win or two.

The recievers bailed ryan out a lot. It might just be nerves as a lot of balls were high and behind. Right now high balls don’t worry me as much as balls being behind recievers. Abraham’s injury might be just be minor tweak but it will probably nag him throughout the season is not a good sign as he is the pass rush.

Welike,
No it’s not to early to say Ryan is accurate. In practice he has made all the throws. And his college career tells us he is accurate. He actually looked less accurate tonight than he did in college. However, he is adjusting to NFL speed and his own nerves. He has shown pretty good reads so far too. He seems to have both the physical and the mental skills he needs to succeed. He will have off days, but I think he will be steady overall.

I know its going to be hard to be a fan for this “new beginning” and honestly didn’t think i’d watch much of the game tonight but as a loyal Atlanta sports fan I’ve tuned in tonight and so far….I guess i’m pleased. My expectation aren’t all that high and for the first game of the pre-season I did see some things that i liked so far this year. Thing that has stuck out to me so far is the play of our DBs. I’m a defensive nut, love defense, and I wanted to see what we would be like at the corners and I must say that the two guys that started at the corners tonight did a pretty good job, to me. Coverage was pretty good from both the corners and I hope thats a position where we continue to play throughout the game. Other than that I thought Turner had a few good runs, and Ryan did fairly well for his first game in the NFL. The standouts so far has to be Roddy White, who has come a very long way from the guy that dropped passes repeatedly to a dependable receiver. Another standout is the way the game has been called….I know its the first game but…..so far no questionable calls from our coaching staff.

Yo Chris, way to go with the positive attitude man. Reality check…as much as we all love Mike Vick, he’s gone sir. Get over it. Ryan looked a whole lot better than Redman. A bomb? A flash in the pan? After 20 minutes of pro action. Come back to earth man. For the real Falcon fans, we dont look to bad on offense. The rookies are holdin their own pretty good. See what happens next week against the Colts D. Good couple tests to start the preseason.

My GOD can we have a Falcons forum w/out th I G N O R A N T racial-agenda-driven “Free Vick” and “start D.J.” stupidity???
Why is it SO important to some people that this team have a quarterback of a particular skin tone? I’ts utterly I G N O R A N T. Nevermind how INSULTING it is to the other players on the field who are of the same skin tone.
I mean, seriously… Vick? Please. He’s legally locked up (and will be for awhile). Ge over it; this team has moved on; washed its hands of the criminal.
D.J. Shockley… one ONE year as a college starting QB does not make him worthy of being an NFL starter, yet. I’m a Bulldog, and I’m pulling for him, myself, but I’m smart enough to realize the odds he (again) has to overcome. Get a clue.
Geez. Root for the team or find a team who’s QB fits your myopic (pause while you look it up) needs, please.

If you want to see inaccurate…watch Harrington miss receivers from seven yards away. Receivers are wide open…there is no pass rush and Harrington barely gets the ball to them. Redman was not much better when he was in the game either.
If our O-Line is gelling, Ryan will be the starter.
The biggest problem we have is that Abraham is injury prone and we still aren’t seeing anything from Anderson. We also have ZERO depth at most positions. We are definitely two or three years away from being a playoff contender.

I just gotta ask myself, ( I’m still laughin at Chris) why is Harrington ahead of Shock? Good Lord the man sucks. I called the Afternoon Saloon last week and told Chuck if he throws a 30 yard pass, even if its incomplete, I’ll give him a dollar. Looks like I get to keep my money. Harrington got a chance. He looked the same today as he did when he played last year. Joey is a great guy, but he is just not much of a qb. It needs to be someone who can teach and still be competant in the game.

Yeah fellas, our boy Abe grimmacing on the sidelines and Anderson on the other side gettin punked aint a very good sign. We got Chauncey Davis though. He’s solid. The DB’s looked good. Didn’t expect to see much on D right away. Keepin em to 10 pts in the 1st half aint too shabby. Matty (can we call him that already?) should be a good quality QB for some years to come. And my man Roddy White is the isht. At least as far as Falcon receivers are concerned. Douglas and Finn should round out a pretty decent receiver core. With Turner and Norwood, we should win a few. As long as the D ends dont wear out our linebackers by week 6.

There’s a contingent of bloggers who just wanna push-push-push for D.J. Shockley to be given a crack at being a starting NFL QB for the Falcons when he’s played zero NFL regular season games. That’s silly.
He’s a 2nd or 3rd string QB - at best - at this point in his career, folks. Those guys get scrub minutes at the end of the game. Geez, deal with it, and stop whining that he’s not getting his due, or his shot.
Somebody has to play the last 10 minutes of the game; it would make no sense for the incumbent starter, or the first round pick or the NFL veteran. Ya’ll are griping like he’s being treated unfairly. Let the process play out, and watch it happen.

Concerned about Abraham; looking forward to hearing what his status is. REALLY proud to see Thomas Brown in red and black (again). Ryan looked pretty darn good for a rookie QB in his first pre-season game. Roddy White could be a star in the right setting; this ain’t it (yet) but he’s gonna make whomever the starting QB is look better.
The o-line seems improved. Shockley only 4 of 15 doesn’t bode well for him, but his elusive running ability does make him a unique commodity. I think he’s safe.

Ron Roberts, first of all, what group of people/fans are you referring to as “ya’ll?” Secondly, are you saying those rooting for DJ are racially biased because they want a QB who’s “played zero NFL regular season games” to be the starter? Okay, so I’m assuming those aching for Ryan to run the team are biased also…I mean, he’s also “played zero NFL regular season games.” Another question: Why do you keep using the former QB’s name (I refuse to say it) & DJ’s name in the same sentence? There are plenty of folks that are rooting for DJ without chanting the former QB’s name. Hmmm, sounds like you’re the one with biases. You’re drawing conclusions that don’t apply to all the people you’re grouping together…you know, the ones in that “ya’ll” group…

I do hope the falcons cut DJ because we could use a good back up in steel town, and DJ will get something he will never get with the falcons…. a suber bowl ring. We could use a good back QB with Batch out 4-6 weeks.
BTW, it is only preseason, do not get too high. Where was the FS on that TD to White? Coverage will be tighter in the regular season.

Shockley needs to go
He is terribly inaccurate. He went 4 of 15 and many of the throws were not even close. Then, with the game on the line, he finally hit someone right between the numbers - too bad it was a defensive back for the Jaguars.
I think people are finally starting to see that DJ Shockley does not belong in the NFL.
Maybe he would be good in Canada, but not in the NFL.

QB Ratings mean nothing. Harrington looked HORRIBLE tonight despite decent stats. Those all came on a screen pass and every other throw was behind the receivers and he took two sacks (maybe the QB does have something to do with it). Battling for the 3rd spot seems to have ruined any intensity he had (and I thought he wasn’t terrible last season). I’m not a UGA homer, but if Shockley had better WRs playing, his numbers would have been pretty solid.

Shockley’s interception to close the game was bad. I am like everyone else though. I wan’t Shockley to play with the first team offense against the opposing first team defense. That’s the only way to lay to rest the Shockey controversy.
One thing to note, however. It doesn’t matter if you play with the first string or the the fifth string if you pass the ball into the ground half the time. Shock did a lot of that tonight. It is sad, but he has not matured because of injuries.

In the end we lose the game…reallyyy thought we would get that win until that receiver dropped a pretty pass.
At the end of the night I say that we go ahead and cut #13 (he hasn’t earned the right for me to call his name). Seriously, if you look at the stats his may look a tad better than DJ’s but the man constantly missed dump off passes and got his numbers up by completing a 3 year dump off screen that Snelling did all the work on. He doesn’t look like he did last year…the guy looks far worst than last year! Nothing has changed with #13…the guy has been a loser and will stay a loser.
Other than that I thought the o-line was decent…to many false starts from the o-line but it is the pre-season so hopefully that clean itself up. Again the best thing I seen tonight was Roddy White and the overall play of our starting corners. I thought those guys did a good job which is a surprise to me because I thought that would be our weak point. How about some of our rookies as well. I thought Lofton had some BIG hits out there tonight.. Good game Falcons. Now all we have to do is cut #13..get his worthless behind out of that Falcons uniform

Our coaches are not stupid, they know through practice etc. where our qb’s belong and they proved that tonight. Redman being #1 has much more to do with his experience than anything else and Ryan proved he is head and shoulder above everyone else at #2. Michael: This post is also directed at you whether you are a UGA fan or not. “Shockley should be NUMBER2!!!!”. Was the picture from My ATL TV bad enough to where you couldn’t see the game??

Okay, those who think everyone that roots for DJ is a biased Vick fan…have at it, show your bias/ignorance/fear…I’ll chime in on some football business whenever the conversation gets back to that…

Why should Harrington be cut when he led the offense to one of the two TD drives we had tonight?

so D.J goes 4-15 and some say he should be AT LEAST 2nd string. That’s hilarious. What do you base this on? If Shockley played at Utah State would you still say this?

D.J was the best QB out there,he moved the fifth string offense to the goal line in 2 minutes, despite his last throw, I think he did great job and he should start

The Falcons looked pretty good tonight throughout the game. I was happy with most aspect, but a little troubled by Elam’s misses and Shockley’s performance.
I had read a lot of Georgia fans talking Shockley up, but he looked pretty bad from what I saw. He just does not have an accurate arm (I think he was 4 of 16 tonight). Also, Shockley’s decision making is not good for a guy going into his 3rd year in the NFL. After tonight, I think Shockley will be the first QB to go.
Running backs and receivers looked solid (especially Weems who was playing at the end of the game).
Go Falcons.

The Falcons have gotten so bad that you people celebrate paying 70 million dollars to watch someone complete 9 passes and still lose the game.
I don’t care if you complete 3 of 20 as long as you win the game. Better pray Roddy White doesn’t get injured.

welikesbaseball2… Matt Ryan is a top-5, first round draft pick. D.J. Shockley is not. He was a college starting QB for one season, compared to Matt Ryan’s nearly three full seasons at BC. ‘Nuff said.

For what it’s worth, I was concerned about picking Ryan myself. But tonight, I saw a huge difference in the team when he came into the game. He looked like the leader of the Falcons. He had pocket presence, a handle of the huddle and a gun on his shoulder. Maybe not right away, but if he can continue to get better, we may very well have gotten the best player in this draft.
I would also like to see DJ get a good look. Not a lot of difference between Redman and Harrington. Redman seems to be the better option IMO. I think, if given the chance, Shock could turn out to be a great backup or number 3 until Ryan is ready.
I almost had a Cardiac episode when Abraham went out. We cannot have that at all. The ‘new’ second year guy just gets no push upfield at all. Huge concern IMO. Liked the way Turner and Norwood looked.
Go Falcons!!

Shockley threw a pick against the last string of players? How is this not settled now? He’s awful. If he didn’t play for the puppy dog school, no one would care.

I have watched DJ during his career with the bulldogs and with the falcons. I have a medical question. How can anyone who CHOKES as much as he has in his college and pro careers keep breathing. When the pressure is on, he CHOKES; he did in college, he still does in the pros. Shouldn’t his windpipe be totally collapsed by now?

I enjoyed watching the falcons play tonight. SHOCKLEY especially made it exciting at the end! He brought the heart, passion and kind of drive we need here in atlanta to get anything accomplished until some guys get more set in their individual positions. He has that natural ability to save plays/ make something out of nothing, his passes were pretty much accurate/with strength (whether some receivers caught the ball or not) and I can’t wait to see his chemistry with Finn when he gets to play with the 1st string offense…
FOOTBALL SEASON IS BACK…that’s exciting enough…BUT HERE’S A GUY WHO CAN ADD TO THAT EXCITEMENT, FILL SOME SEATS, & BRING SOME WINS HERE TO ATLANTA…
Go team!!!

Dad gum, looks like Roddy is bringing his “A” game this year. Well done sir!
I thought DJ was outstanding playing with the third and fourth string. I am not as worried about his stats (but, Mr. Meeks shouldn’t make any long term plans with the team) DJ flat out moved the team. My only concern is that he isn’t the same style QB as the other three and this would make him odd man out in my opinion.
I do think tonight’s performance guarantees him a job in the NFL though. Maybe a trade with TN?
