Bulldogs rack up another No. 1 ranking
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia debuted at No. 1 in the USA Today/Coaches poll last week.
Now, Sports Illustrated will proclaim Georgia as the top team in college football when the magazine hits the newsstands on Wednesday.
Will sports writers follow suit when the Associated Press releases its poll later in August?
Is this just confirmation that the Bulldogs are the best team to contend for the BCS title? Are expectations too high?
Or are you superstitious this will jinx the Bulldogs’ season?

Cool magazine cover and all, but isn’t SI always wrong? I remember years where they picked Arizona, West Virginia, etc…. I hope the curse doesn’t bite us!

In a month’s time, there will be more UGA players on Probation Rosters than Football Rosters.
My bad, my bad. Forgot the coach is Mark Richt. To him, serious punishment is sitting out the 2nd half of a game, if winning, the week before a rivalry game.

I for one don’t think they will win Diddly Poo this year. Not even the East. No leadership. Just look at the arrests. Would that happen if they knew Pollack would be around for them first day of camp, pounding their face into the ground. Doubt it. That’s a bad omen. And if the players don’t seem to care, why should we. Very pi$$ed right now about their behavior. And Georgia is pitiful when they are “expected” to win.
This has nightmare season written all over it. And don’t question me being a fan. I’m just stating on what the dogs have done to us in the past with only half the expectations and thinking with a clear head. Not happening this year!

OH NO, Not Stafford on the cover. Let’s see: “best ever quarterback” and “likes to win game in last drive” (see carolina game). They jinxed us, played great against OSU but struggled until we got a running game. I can’t be serious about this team until after Florida. I say 8-3 at best, unless they refuse to believe the hype and play with a chip on their shoulders.

The only way this team will go 8-4 or 9-3 is with a bunch of injuries. I know some people hate the Dawgs on this blog, but the WORST this team has been under Richt is 9-4 and that was in 2006 when they were struggling at QB and had injuries. Not saying it can’t happen, but you can’t predict injuries anymore than you can predict an undefeated season. To predict that this team will go 8-4 or 7-5 is like saying the Falcons will be a playoff team this year, there’s a chance that it could happen but it’s not likely. I personally think this team will finish 11-2 like last year, 10-3 at worst. And if this teams underachives this year like Auburn did in 2002, then watchout for 2009 b/c if I remember correctly the Tigers went 13-0 in 2004.

I disagree. This team could win 9 or 10 games, or could very well only win 7 or 8, injuries or not. There is no way to say that Georgia will absolutely win at LSU or Auburn, in Jax against Florida, or even in Tempe at a top 20 Arizona State.
Georgia can certainly win most, maybe all of these games, but you’re fooling yourself if you think these are absolute victories already marked down in the W column.
Don’t forget tennessee and Bama. Tough schedule Dan —in no way are 8 or 9 wins a shoe-in.

Bad, bad position for the dawgs to be in. Everybody, and I mean everybody, will want to be the first to knock them off. The toughest schedule in years, Urban Meyer’s “I will never forget …” mindset, the natural propensity of players and fans to believe what is written by others to be “fact,” and the continual dilemma of determining who will play in place of the latest suspended player will, in the end, mean that the woofs heard so loudly today will become whimpers - especially so if they don’t win the SEC East. A loss to the nerds and their “high school” offense in the final “irrelevant rivalry game” will reduce even the whimpers to muzzled silence.

Nice!!! The team that is not even picked to win its conference by the other SEC coaches is pre-season #1. This ought to make their annual loss to UT, or Kentucky, or Florida taste even sweeter. And just think, they have LSU this year, in Baton Rouge. I expect another 8-3 season, a winter of excuses, a lot of complaining how the BCS shut them out again, and how strong they will be in 2009 when Stafford is a senior, if he stays out of jail/NFL draft.
You can’t keep these dogs out of jail. How do you expect to keep them on the field?

To Wrong Dan
You want to know how many times have the Dawgs lost on the road in the last 7 years? 4! That’s it! If you’re going to bet against UGA, bet against them at home. They could slip up against Bama at home, but the rest of their home schedule is pretty managable.
Also you’re underestimating the momentum from the season before. Auburn was 9-4 in 2002 and were ranked 1# in 2003 solely based on talent, which is why they faltered at 7-5. Tennessee overachieved in 2004 winning 5 close games, which is why they fell on their face in 2005( although 5-6 was a shocker even for me). But the Dawgs were 11-2 last season, with convincing wins over FLA, AU, UK, and GT. Momentum is HUGE in football or any sport for that matter, and to underestimate it is as asinine and underestimating the schedule. No doubt about it, that schedule is tough, but to predict a 7-5 season for this starting lineup is to imply that Mark Richt and Co are lousy coaches that can’t their team motivated( which isn’t true, just ask FLA and AU). To predict 7-5 w/o injuries is to say they are overlooking half the teams on their schedule( which they won’t be). To predict 7-5 w/o injuries is hoping for the worst and grasping at straws.

I love all the posts by all the jealous haters out there; gets me fired up in the morning. The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of expectations for a few teams in the SEC. Georgia has a lot of the upper hand in this situation because of the talent and depth they are putting on the field. Only twice out of the last 10 years has the team ranked #1 preseason gone on to win the NC, so it is going to be difficult. The winner of the UGA/UF game will be the the SEC champ, and will hopefully get to play in the NC game. Would it not be something to see a UGA/UF vs USC? A chance to put all of the Pac-10 homers to rest about this whole conference nonsense. UGA will have its chance against ASU, and Tenn against UCLA. 24 MORE DAYS… I can taste it. GO DAWGS, and good luck to all SEC teams(as long as they aren’t playing the Dawgs). Bring it home boys!

Keep this SI article somewhere safe, because it as close you UGA will ever get to another national title. You have just received the “Kiss of Death” from SI and it is over now.
Regardless, 8-4 at best in 2008 for the Dogs, with losses to UT, LSU, USC and UF. CMR does not have the intangibles required to get you a title. He will be outcoached by Fulmer, Spurrier, Tubberville and Miles.
Strap it on, let’s go and when all is said and done UGA fans will be left with nothing more than disappointment again.

I see where the University of Kentucky kicked a potential starting QB off of the team for violation of team rules.
Meanwhile, back in Athens, Saint Richt continues to hand out ‘harsh’ punishments to a plethera of rule violators by actually suspending some of these players for games against GA Southern and Central Michigan.
See the difference? One program sees college athletics for what it is —as a priviledge that comes with responsibilities and rules that must be upheld. The other, well, looks like a win at all cost mentality.
I don’t ever want to hear another UGA fan talk about it’s cherished program, it’s honorable coach and the prestige of the program in terms of winning, honor and academics again. You’re athletics program has forever been stained by the events of the previous few months —particularly when you size these events up with the ‘look the other way’ mentality that defined the Vince Dooley era.
Go dawgs indeed.

UGA VII is so ashamed of this team he want even show his UGLY MUG in the G Sweater. The guys all saying it don’t matter your preseason ranking just where you finish. Great line right out of CMR mouth, but so very stupid. It does matter where you start so you can be close at the end of the season. Don’t you guys remember last when you didn’t win the SEC East but you ended up ranked high. Try that this year and see what happens to you quick drop unstead of your quick rise in the polls. The players don’t have the balls to say what they think. They THINK THEY CAN’T BE BEAT AND THEY ARE THE BEST. “KEEP IT REAL”. UGA is better than all but 3 teams on their schedual. Of those 3 they are as goods as 2 of those teams. LSU at LSU at NIGHT (when the game will end up being played) the VOODOO is hard to compete with.

I disagree about finish #1 or the season is for naught.
Winning the SEC has to be the goal. No luck is required, no winning of a popular vote. Just play the games. The last two SEC National Champs needed massive luck in games they had no control of to get the shot at winning the MNC game. I’ve said for a while, the SEC Champ should get an automatic bid to the MNC game.
Anything else after the SEC Championship is gravy.

A brutal schedule and the inevitable injuries can make a “dream team” into an also-ran. Remember these are 18-20 year kids who can get pretty full of themselves quickly. The QB at Kentucky had already established himself as a problem child. In 2005 in quit the team. This past offseason he was arrested for “speeding” and again for carrying “Mary Jane”, which last I checked is illegal in the USA. It is impossible to compare his situation to any player “ARRESTED” at UGA. No illegal substances no domestic violence charges. The one violent act (Lemon) was handled swiftly.
UGA is a LEGITIMATE threat now. Hince all the bashers. Go ahead, but be ready to come back after Moreno and Company have left your town on Saturday’s this Fall. Leaving on your Tigers, Jackets,Vols and whomever it may be in a trail of tears.
GOOO DAWGS!!!!

George, Chris and Scott………….how stupid can you be? You people are pathetic. Your own team sux so you have to make yourselves feel better by trying to take the dawgs down. I bet every single one of you got beat up as a kid. Big boys behind that keyboard, aren’t you? Why don’t you losers just get back to work and stop wasting our time. Or, how bout some D&D practice???

SCOTT don’t tell the truth! The whole of UGA is not just BLONDE BIMBOS, Rednecks & Subdivision P!*^KS, but only 78.3% of the Black Students play a sport. The fact that only 17.1% of UGA students are AFERICAN AMERICAN does not make the “FANS” Racists. It is the system! HaHaHaHa.

ZEB—-what are you doing on the computer at 11:00? Why are you not at work? I own my HOME, a Farm, and Run my Own Business. I can be on the KEYBOARD any hour I want with no BOSS to answer to, and you? And when I say OWN I mean I don’t have payments to a bank or morgage company, and YOU? What year did you graduate from UGA? Are YOU up to your $10,000 donation to buy your season tickets?

Chris, first of all it’s none of your buisness what the hell time I’m on my own computer. I’m sure you probably work on a goat farm and are stealing computer time while the owner is buying feed. Don’t try to impress anyone, we can all make up any personality or life behind a keyboard. Say what you want, you’re still an idiot. Have a great day.

Zeb do you actually know who “CHRIS” is? Check in to it! HE is ex-MSG at the RANGER Mountain School in Dahlonega. Maybe he was beat-up in school but not much after that. His Dress Blues have a lot of color on his left breast. Truth be told he HATES UGA, but FSU, UT, and VT as well. I have met him a few times when I was younger and a few times as an adult. He dated my oldest sister in the late 80’s.

It totally cracks me up. Most of the trash talk is coming from the “Nerd Herd.” You guys are soooooo jealous it kills you. I can understand UT, UF and other SEC fans trash talking. Heck, they have earned it. Hate to say it, but mostly LSU and UF because they have won it all recently, but TECH….. Go back to that rock you crawled out from and worry about your team maybe not finishing last in a weak ACC.
Hey, don’t go away mad, just go away!!
The Seniors need to step it up already with the off season issues or it will get out of hand and roll over into the season. The talent is in place. A strong Senior class with strong leadership will help carry this team. Without it, we are a 9 to 10 win season.
Let’s get it going! Go Dawgs!

Whew! Making Georgia #1 is like giving a crybaby a big ‘ol noonie. Obviously the coaches and SI were as tired of hearing the Georgia puppy dogs whimper as we are over here in Tiger Town. Just remember, whining and complaining won’t get you to the SEC championship game.

Ok Chris, if you are who Kenn State says you are, then I apologize. I went to college at North Ga and did a lot of training with the Rangers at Camp Merrill. Also did a little tour at Quantico. I have the utmost respect for any military people and will just have to take the fact that you don’t like UGA. Go Rangers and Semper Fi.

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!
It’s fun to read all the trash talk from everyone. Obviously, most is directed to UGA but I can see why. It’s called jealosy. Who wouldn’t love to have 17 starters returning from an 11-2 team that finished 2nd in the country. Also, who wouldn’t be excited about being ranked #1 by two of the top rating services. Even the biggest morons on the planet would have to understand the enthusiasm. Imagine if it were your team! Look, the odds are greater that UGA will NOT win the NC, but that does nothing to damper the preseason buzz. And when I say buzz, I’m not talking about Tech. They’re wasting all their time discussing uniform colors. LOL! Whatever happens happens. I’m just looking forward to the ride.

Where’s Tech? I didn’t see SI’s photo spread of Tech.
Tech fans are not worried about being on the cover of SI. William Bell was on the cover of SI in 1990 as GT eventually won the NC.
Of course dawg fans cannot remember the last time UGA was on the cover of SI concerning a NC —since it happened over a quarter-century ago.

My # 1 fan is back ! How exciting for him ! How many passes in a row did I complete that day ? How many seconds left on the clock when I hit the winning TD in the corner against Tech ?
How many yards and points did we rack up against Florida and Auburn last year ?
Enjoy the beatdowns ! They are coming !

I’m a huge Dawg fan, but still capable of being rational and I say tell me another team that should be in front of Georgia in the preseason ranking…there isn’t one.
(1) USC doesn’t even have a returning, experienced QB…enough said, seriously
(2) Ohio State…pahlease…this is really getting old…the arse whippin’ that was placed on this same team at the end of last season by an LSU team that finished its regular season losing to lowly Arkansas who got smashed in its bowl game vs Missouri says it all (3) Florida - Georgia whipped them last season and we return a better defense and offense AND this returning team finished the year losing to a Div.I-AA Michigan team (4) Choklahoma - Is it just me or did WVU beat the h3ll out of this so-called powerhouse in their bowl game last season, the same WVU who lost its final game to Pitt?
And on and on…Goergia is by no means flawless, but they deserve this preseason #1 ranking, its a no-brainer - Georgia fan or not.

Jeff Patton, you’re right GA did whip us in 2005. You beat us in 1978 too! Who cares??? What most people do care about is that LSU has 2 Crystal Footballs in our trophy case and GA has some dusty old pictures of Herschel Walker. LSU could have whipped GA in the SEC Champ if ya’ll hadn’t lost to Tenn. by 3 TD’s.

Denver Dawg is just like all the crybabys last year bragging about how they were the ‘hottest’ team at the end of the year. I wish LSU could have end its season playing Troy, Kentucky GA Tech at home and then play HAWAII. Hey I got some logic you can use: We beat Tennessee and Tenn clobbered you!

Mike Bobo 17 INT you are an idiot! You mention that UF will beat UGA, but that Tubberville will outcoach Richt and don’t mention Auburn as a loss for us. I guess as long as Tubberville outcoaches Richt and UGA wins, I couldn’t care less. Miles is the luckiest SOB in the world. Yes, they won the MNC last year and were a very good team, but I can think of a couple more losses they should have had (against UF and Auburn, and perhaps Alabama) last year, and they got EXTREMELY LUCKY that his bone-headed coaching didn’t cost them those games. I’d rather be ranked lower to start the year, but these preseason rankings have little merit to how things will play out on the field.
