Munson sends regards
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In a letter to Claude Felton, associate athletic director for sports communications, the family of the legendary voice of the Georgia Bulldogs, Larry Munson, gives a brief update on his condition and his intention to return to the booth for a 43rd season.
What follows is the letter in its entirety.
August 1, 2008
The Munson family wishes to update the Bulldog nation on the health of Larry Munson. On April 4th of 2008, Larry had surgery to repair a subdural hematoma. The surgery was performed at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens. The surgery went very well. A couple of weeks later Larry was moved to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA to continue his rehabilitation process.
Currently, Larry is in his final weeks of rehabilitation and expects to make a full recovery. Larry has every intention of calling the Georgia home games this season and is ready for the football season to begin. In order for Larry to uphold the great Georgia tradition of calling the play by play for your Bulldogs, he will have to limit speaking engagements, autograph sessions, and interviews so all his energy can be focused on calling the games.
The Munson family wishes to personally thank all the doctors, nurses, and therapists at St. Mary’s Hospital, the Shepherd Center, and Athens Regional who have worked very hard to help Larry make a full recovery. The family would also like to thank his employer Cox Radio and the University of Georgia for being so understanding at such a crucial time in Larry’s life. Thanks again to all the fans that sent cards and letters wishing Larry well.
Go Dawgs!
The Munson Family
Send Munson well wishes.

I’m not a Dawg fan, but I don’t know there is a finer voice of college football. Good luck Larry, and we all know we will hear that gravelly voice in a month!

Can’t wait to hear you on August 30th Larry!! Although I know you will bemoan our offensive line inexperience and our kicker situation - it’s that kind of thing that makes you a true dawg!
Best wishes Larry!

I know i’m asking a lot Larry, but hunker down for one more season.
I will never forget the auburn game you called when you counted down the seconds and asked the dawgs to hunker down one more time. You said “Auburn’s trying to break our hearts”

In a time of television and internet and all the visual stimulus ones eye can behold, it will always be the voice of Larry Munson, my favorite Dawg, growling and pessimistic, painting the scene with 108 seconds …107..106…105 left and thus prompting my quick math skills that I will remember from each and every game. There will never be one better.
Proud to be a Dawg!

I can’t wait for you to call the Georgia - Tennessee game. I know we can count on you for the hobnail boot on Tennessee. Nothing will ever be greater than that call.

The Larry Munson return to Sanford Stadium play by play as done by Larry Munson:
“We’ve got a very talented Georgia Southern team to deal with today and its at least 322 degrees on the field. Man is it hot!
We also have this ranking you guys…this curse hanging around our neck. Its a target on our backs the size of Texas.
On top of that we gotta count on a radio announcer who at least thousand years old. Can he possibly even make it to the press booth you guys? We will even have an announcer? Can he make it to the second quarter you guys? In this heat???
He’s just been wheeled out of the hospital, he’s a THOUSAND years old you guys and we’re counting on him to call a game of this magnitude …with this ranking…with this pressure. And with a freshman field goal kicker. MY GOD A FRESHMAN KICKER?!? And that offensive line. Freshman and sophomores. Freshman and sophomores everywhere. They haven’t even started shaving yet you guys. My God what have they done to us with this ranking?!?!?”
Loran Whaddyagot?”
Loran: “Larry I talked to Larry about doing the game today and he said he feels great. Back to you.”

The best news today was not the number one pre-season ranking by the AP. No get the picture, Munson returns to the booth. My God, an Octogenarian.
Now my annual Dove shoot is complete. Guns, cold beer, barbeque and Munson calling the game. Heck it don’t matter if any doves show up.
Godspeed and God bless you Larry.
My God, do you believe that this kid was kicking balls in stadiums that only held a thousand people last year. Now he has to hit a fifty yarder to win the game. My God the pressure. Sorry could not help myself.

The Dawgs have a tough row to hoe to remain number 1 this year (and they are capable of doing it), but Larry- there is no debate who is no. 1 in calling a football game. Hearing your voice is like “sugar falling from the sky” to the fans. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, our beloved Voice of Georgia Football.

I’m sorry, I was outside my mind when I left the ignorant, immature, nauseating, repugnant comment that I left earlier. While announcers don’t play the games, we should all respect an 86-year-old man who has given so much of his life and time to any institution. It is much more sportsmanlike and mature to wish someone well as they are recovering from surgery (particularly brain surgery, which I myself clearly need) than to spout venomous hatred for no clear reason. Thank you for your time; I’m sorry that I’m such a waste of space most of the time. signed, RamWreck’02

I would imagine it is hard for a fan from another school to conceive of the devotion we Dawg fans have for Larry and our UGA’s. They are so enmeshed in our football tradition. So here we have a new pup and the old man back on August 30th.
My God look at that Dawg. Do you realize that he was running around in a backyard just weeks ago and he is now the official mascot of the Bulldawg Nation. Oh what pressure, what exrtaordinary pressure.

Cuz, only young idiots like ramwreck02sux don’t understand history. Carolina, thanks for the kind comments about Larry, you are a very classy and well informed jacket. Larry IS the Bulldogs. When they blackout the stupid games, he’s our only outlet, except to go to Athens. Good luck in your recovery Larry and welcome back!
