Should Chipper Jones play if he’s not 100 percent?

Just two days after saying his injured quadricep was not healing as fast as anticipated, third baseman Chipper Jones returned to the lineup Tuesday, as the Braves opened a three-game series against the division-leading Phillies. But should he have been?

Is this series important enough for Jones to risk an early return? Or would you rather seem him sit out until he’s completely healthy, even if it means a stint on the disabled list?

After Tuesday’s win, Philadelphia now leads the Braves by five games in the NL East. Clearly, the Braves aren’t out of the race, but if Chipper were to go down for an extended period of time, they’d be in big trouble.

So is it worth the risk?

This is a very big series. We could gain some ground and come within one game of the Phils. So in that since, play Chipper! However, if he injures himself more, he could be gone for a substantial amount of time. So who the heck knows what to do!

Just don’t run all out on a first to third, Chipper. Station to station.

Yes, He needs to play. He knows his limitations. He’s just been playing it safe the past few days cause he knew how much this series meant and wanted to be ready for it. As long as he knows his limitations and doesnt exert himself too much, he’ll be fine. A 70-80 percent chipper is better than any backup in that lineup right now. We need him as a force in the lineup. Without him, pitchers tend to pitch better and more comftorably..

Let him rest. If you can’t beat the blue birds, you’re darn sure not going to beat the Phils. The Braves are onl;y 4 games out because the Phils have hit a little rough streak. The Braves have been terrible pretty much all season. After 162 games, they’re not going to win the Division one way or the other— they just aren’t that good. So let Chipper rest… oh, and go ahead and dump Fran-cine and Te-she-ra while we’re at it.

Oh Cobbler, chill man. Your reference to them as “girls” is getting old and girls probably laugh @ you anyway. I know I do! Texiera is heating up and Frenchy is just plain lost. Send him back to the minors and let him get away from the wifey…she must be taking all his focus away. Chipper should rest!! Get healthy so the Braves can kick butt in the 2nd half. Stick that in your juicebox, Cobbler or is that Gobbler?!

At 75-80% Chipper is still better than the altenative. If we drop two of three here we’re five out and falling so it’s best to roll the dice now and have a chance than to throw in the towel and fade before the All-Star break. CJ is a gutsy player who has never been properly appreciated by Braves’ fans. He should be applauded. A standing ovation, really.

Just heard of the Brett Myers send down. Wren and Bobby please take note.We have someone who would benefit by such a move! The name escapes me right now.

No way should Hoss play the whole game tonight. At most, let him PH in a crucial situation. If we can get through the All Star break with him continuing to heal and staying off the leg, we stand a better opportunity in the second half with a TON of players healing up and returning. Hoss, Kotsay, Prado, Glavine, (dare I say it….) Hampton, and maybe Frenchy finds his swing. We’re not that far out and I don’t see a reason to take a risk like that at this point. But I trust Bobby and Chipper to know what is best and I will be rooting the entire time. Go Braves.

I know people like to come in here and bash Cox and the others, but think of what we have had for the last 16 years. It’s been an amazing run. Thanks Braves. Let’s get one more!

Chipper should play only if he thinks he will not agrivate his quad. Yes this is a big series, but the Braves are only 4 out. We need him healthy for the stretch run. Or they need to make a choice and trade Teixeria now.

Dack Jerrick-

You make a great point. He does deserve a bit more.

Too big of a series to not play. Chipper’s a pro and he knows his team needs him and honestly, I’d rather have an 80% Chipper than a 100% Gotay (and I am not bad-mouthing Gotay - He has done an OK job filling in)

No Chipper should not be playing. I know it is a very important series but unless the Braves acquire a left fielder with pop then there is no chance and if Chipper gets injured and has to miss 2 or 3 weeks then it does not matter

All we need to do is tread water here. If we can win one game we’re still in the race. We gotta outpitch them. They have the better lineup especially with le francais going the way he is. The Kotsay trade was a terrible move. He’s keeping the seat warm for Schafer. Doesn’t anybody realize that Schafer isn’t going to approach Andruw type numbers offensively or defensively? Why everyone was so quick to turn on Andruw after driving in 351 runs in the last 3 years I’ll never know.

Probably not. If you can’t play .500 ball, you are not going anywhere anyway, so why take the chance?

I would sit out Chipper since it’s 5-0! Here’s to 2009!!!

I’ve never known of a Braves superstar more fragile than Chipper. And that includes Bob Horner. In fact, if Horner heard that Chipper was refusing to game it, he’d beat him with the cast of his ever-broken wrist.

Until Chipper makes an effort to play through pain, the Braves aren’t winning diddley squat. Smoltzie’s arm is going to fall off for the effort he’s made to play through pain. Chipper is merely going to turn to dust or mold from his inactivity.

ABsolutely not. This season is toast. Why risk further injury. The Braves will not do anything until they get some veteran starters and rid the roster of Boyer, Franceur, Miller and other non producers.

No, Chipper should not play. He is hurt. You could see it last night in his at bat. Chipper is more important than the game. Let him get well. We want him for years to come. Go Braves!

July 2nd No. I don’t think Chipper can really contrubite the way he “hobbled” around last night. IF he gets on base he can’t run so give a younger healthy guy a chance.

Was wondering if anybody noticed that Chipper wasn’t wearing that special necklace and neither was any of the other players that had been wearing them. Also, does anybody know what the win/loss totals were while Chipper was wearing the necklace.

Of course Chipper should play, but the decision obviously his alone. He has earned that right….

But how ‘bout re-calling Josh Anderson and playing him for deer-in-the-headlights Francoeur? Better players than Francoeur have slumped, and it would not kill him to sit a week and just watch. Maybe the black cloud would clear. I mean a volunteer from the cheap seats has a better chance these days to contribute offensively than Frenchy. Every single at-bat toxic. It’s a joke, a cruel one on Braves’ teammates/fans.
