One-game season for UGA

The season has come down to one game for the University of Georgia baseball team.

Win tonight and it will bring a national championship back to Athens. Lose and it will be the national runnerup.

The Dogs were pounded 19-10 last night by Fresno State, forcing tonight’s winner-take-all contest for the College World Series title.

So, do you think the Dogs will bounce back and win the championship tonight? If you do, or if you don’t, let us know why.

I think/hope/pray the DAWGS will bring home the National Championship tonight.

1- Dave Perno. He’s been here before as a player and won it. This is his 3rd trip as a coach in 6 years. He finds a way to make his team pull through. 2 - Previous CWS Experience (while limited) of some of our key players. Beckham and Piesel dont want to feel what they felt 2 years ago (by losing). Those 2 find a way to make it happen. 3 - Pitching. Yes, Fresno has a “quality starter” going tonight, but he is on short rest - they hope to get 5 innings out of the guy. The rest of their arms are overworked. While this hasnt affected them so far, somethings gotta give.

For Georgia, our top 3 relievers are ready to go and we have a senior on the hill to start with. I cant ask for more than that.

Go DAWGS

Good job UGAY counting it as a win before the game is even played..I don’t see UGAy bouncing back to finish this up. They have been lucky to get past UM and Stanford. Both teams gave UGAy the win in the 9th innings. I see Fresno State as CWS champs this year.

Dawgs will win as long as the umpires and officiating crew don’t make the same boneheaded calls they did last night.

Boy I hope UGA wins but I tell you this - Fresno is the best hitting team I have seen 1 thru 9 in a very long time. 7 starters with ding dongs- my word how can GA over-come that? If it gets into a slugging match FS will win. The only way GA has a chance is for their starting pitcher to shut them down early and hope the bullpin can save it. To tell you the truth - if I was betting it - I would be scared.

I think our boys got a little over confident last night — thought they could coast on in. Hopefully they got spanked back to the reality. It’s Coach Perno’s job to have them on the field tonight in the right frame of mind. I think he started working on that in the 7th inning last night.

Get hungry, Dawgs!

UGA has finally been exposed. The pitching was buy time and riding the coat-tails of their timely hitting; however, there pitching is atrocious.

Nevermind UGA is fully rested. They like they shouldn’t have never made it out of the Regionals!

UGA pitching is so bad that they allowed a Fresno pitching staff that is limped and bandaged look like Cy Young winners last night. Granted game 3 may not garner as many runs in as game 2, but Fresno will find a way to hit UGA pitchers.

Another thing- Fresno is more discipline at the plate and will make UGA work for strikes while keeping their pitchers in the game.

UGA hitters are too agressive and do not make a pitcher work the counts

This CWS is OVER- Fresno State will pull out a very close victory tonight. So you can stick a folk in UGA. They are done!

by the way- let me be the first to say Congrats to FSU on winning Game 3

God I hope so. Somebody is going to be really disappointed tonight. I think crushed might be the more appropriate word. Both teams have had to put their life on the line to get to this point and losing is really going to sting. I think Georgia is the better team. I just hope that the scoreboard reflects that tonight.

If we can get the officials to do their job, and call strikes strikes, and balls balls. And if we can get a buse umpire to actually be able to tell if the first baseman actually “CATCHES” the ball before he calls a running out. And IF our pitchers remember how to throw strikes, then YEAH we will win tonight. But there sure were a lot of critical calls that ALL went against UGA last night. You don’t think that the NCAA did whatever they could to ensure a third game for the ratings and the revenue, do ya ???? Nahh,, they wouldn’t do something like that,,,surely not !!!

Odds are they will fold like a cheap tent just like last night. Appears Beckham and the rest can’t handle big game pressure. He has a long minor league career ahead of him. At least they can have a team cuddle hug on the plane coming home…

I love the anti-UGA people who refer to UGA as “Ugay”. How mature. Did you learn that at Georgia Tech? Or maybe Florida?

Either way, it’s pathetic.

Fresno State is tough. Have some really good hitters. UGA’s pitching needs to really, really shape up. And the ump needs to really, really shape up. The game he called against UGA last night was as ridiculous as the nerds posting “Ugay” in here.

Wow. Gotta tip your hat to the Fresno lineup. Those guys stepped up and when thy were down 5-0 they brushed themselves off and drilled UGA. Umpires had nothing to do with the out come. Fresno St. did. They got hot and were hitting everything thrown. 10 runs is most certainly enough to win a game. Pitching wil lahve to be better.

Just tip your hat and get ready for the BIG GAME. LETS GO DAWGS….BRING HOME THAT NC. Either way I’m proud of this ball club that Perno has ut out there. They have given UGA fans alot to be proud of and alot of fun baseball to watch. 1 MORE GAME!!!!! GO DAWGS. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Jack-The ball that was called an out at 2B for UGA was not an out. He never had control of the ball and it never was caught in his glove. As soon as it hit the heel of his glove it bounced out. That was a call I think that went in our favor. Can’t blame giving up 19 runs and the Pitching staff getting SHELLED on th Umps.

THe NCAA did not do anything to ensure a 3rd game. Thats pretty much an excuse. Fresno State did something to ensure there was a game 3 and that is called getting hot and scoring runs by the boat load.

By 82DAWG

Comming back from a beat down like last night can’t be easy, but the best way for UGA to win is when you feel they can’t or are out of it. Any way the game can be moved to Foley Field? It all boils down to containment. Neither side has great pitching, so you have to contain the rallies as best you can. Keep it close and win it at the end.

By null

Why not? Since Georgia can’t win a championship in any of the top-tier sports, let’s all pull for them to get one in men’s softball. If not, hey, you always have your manly women’s gymnastics team!

I love that the pathetic UGA fans on here are whining about the ump calls in a game you gave up 19 RUNS! Its not like one critical call cost you the game in a one run difference. Face it, your pitchers have been exposed and your hitters are a bunch of fence swingers who look like little leaguers. Is any of them over 5’6?

No, the umps didn’t lose the game for Georgia.

But they didn’t help.

Sometimes a horrible call deflates one team, and excites another. That’s exactly what happened last night.

But you have to tip your hat to Fresno State. They played great ball down 0-5, and came back to spank Georgia.

Clearly, they’re for real.

P.S. You can be anti-UGA and be classy. Clearly that ship has sailed on those of you posting here.

UGA Blew It- They Are Done - you are an idiot!

“Fresno pitching staff that is limped and bandaged look like Cy Young winners last night”…last time I checked giving up 10 runs is not CY Young you fool.

Give FS credit they were awesome last night. UGA will have their work cut out for them tonight. It will come down to pitching and last night was the first time UGA really pitched poor. UGA needs to keep FS under 7 runs to win. UGA has a big advantage in pitching overall but FS has a much better hitting team especially at the bottom of the order. The winner will be determined by who wins those two battles.

True, a call can deflate a team, but if they are a championship team, they overcome. UGA should not even be in the CWS. They got on a lucky streak and are over their heads. Fresno could have been deflated down by five, but did not, they overcame, and they are a bunch of CA surfers! I actually hope UGA wins, because the regional format is not fair with the best teams in the south put together. It would be sad for the championship to go to a CA team. But, UGA is not the best team from the south, not even close.

UGA can win if the starting pitcher can get through 5 or 6 innings and the officating is better. Even though Fresno State hit very well last night the officials helped them with bad calls in critical situations. The call at first on the bobbled catch that the first baseman never had control was one and some of the calls at home plate were inconsistant. Where did they find these umpires anyway? You would think in a college world series they could have found better.

Fresno has the better hitters at the bottom of the order and that is keeping the pressure on Georgia’s pitching. I am a Cartersville grad so I can say this, Allen put some damn effort into the swing and get around on it. Your in an 0-2 hole everytime you go to bat. The umpires have called against UGA this whole CWS in every game. Best example was last night Ceroine has a 3-2 count and that sorry a* umpire calls strike 3 even the UGA hatin Mike Patrick said that was a bad call. Huge momentum swinger.

FRESNO STATE!! I have been very impressed with their bats. Everyone hits and they are agressive on the bases which leads to extra base hits. How about all the homers they have hit. Georgia looks like a small school when you compare hitting.

It’s a blog, get over yourselves, this is the nature of a blog; and just because you personally have never said anything classless in a blog, it doesn’t mean that other members of the bulldog nation have maintained decorum. And Please, Please, Please quit blaming the umpiring!!! a score of 19- 10 shows no evidence of a deflated team … you still scored 10 runs; the others guys just scored more. UGA Fans are the most ridiculous fans … I have never seen or heard this much crying when you are playing for a national championship. Stop it and enjoy the game tonight. And by the way if there is a bias for Fresno it is simply because they are truly the more underdog of the two teams. It has been an impressive run for UGA, but my goodness what Fresno has done is amazing by any sport’s standards. Good luck tonight to all . . I hope the game goes 25 innings of great baseball.

Hey UGAY fans, does your a* hurt today from the kicking it took last night?

Last time I checked, Old Blue behind the plate doesn’t swing the bat. Your pitcher served it up, and we proceeded to hit the ball. And hit it we did. Hit after hit after hit. Hell, you guys could have saved your pitchers arms and just let us hit off of a tee..it would have made no difference.

And speaking of tee ball, what’s up with that pop fly that went between Beckham and your left fielder.

Should we be playing with you all for the national title, probably not. But we are. And you guys face the sad rality that you too may go home losers, getting knocked out by little Fresno State. Wouldn’t that be embarassing?

As a Fresno resident, transplanted from another region, I have to tell you that I am rooting big time for the Bulldogs - the Georgia Bulldogs. The Fresno State Bulldogs get shoved down our throats here year-round like nobody’s business. As somebody from another area with no allegiance to FSU, it is very irritating. And this CWS run they are on is treated like the greatest thing to happen to this region since air conditioning (and Lord knows we need A/C here!). When FSU beat Arizona State to make the CWS, the broadcast network station I was watching at the time interrupted their regular programming to air a “Special News Bulletin” to announce the FSU had made the CWS. There is no place in this city for someone like me who has no interest in Fresno State sports. Please, Georgia, beat Fresno State and put these fans in their place so my life will be bearable again.

To Jeff…”You were non-existent until UGA beat Tech in the regionals”. How is this possible when UGA has been to Omaha 3 times in the past 5 years? Seems like our baseball program is pretty much established and has been existent. So in essence, your wrong.

Now to the game. PITCHING PITCHING PITCHING! If we don’t pitch we don’t win. It’s as simple as that. The runs will come as they have all year. If we can hold FSU to 8 runs or less then we will win the game. So lets root for the REAL DAWGS and bring another National Title back to Athens.

The green V on the Fresno State helmets symbolizes two things: the V stands for the valley, the San Joaquin Valley, where Fresno is located. The V is green to honor the farmers and others who participate in the agrarian-heavy economy of this region. As a matter of fact, one of the main fundraising arms for FSU athletics is called the “Green V Society”.

To D Ellis,

I was talking about the play at 1st base,,, where the first baseman clearly never had control of the ball. It hit the heel of his glove, bounced out and rolled down his arm to his elbow, where he then pinned it against his body. This doesn not constitute control. That play resulted in the end of an inning, instead of runners at first and third.

The other play was a strike em out, throw them out at third. The pitch was “maybe” 3 inches off the ground, as well as probably 6 - 8 inches inside. It was a 3 and 2 count with the bases loaded and 1 out. Instead of it being a bases loaded walk, with a run scoring, bases loaded with oneout,,it ended the inning.

Not saying that Fresno didn’t do their part by smackin the ball,, but it sure does make it tougher when every bad call goes against you.

UGA really needs to come out swinging and the pitchers need to zero in on the strike zone, that seems to get smaller as the game goes on.

Hey Capitol BullDog - how does it feel to be able to talk smack with the big guys? You sound like the little puppy who wandered out from under the porch and gets to run with the Big Dawgs for a while.

Careful you don’t get eaten. It’s a rough world out there. And best of luck tonight - you may DOUBLE your school’s National Championship titles!

To UGA Fanatic…I am well aware of the success of the baseball program, but it’s the 99.9% of the UGA fans who don’t say anything about it until they have made it to the NCAA’s or CWS. I don’t recall any UGA fans giving a crap last year when they sucked!! So again…I am right!

Steverino, It’s actually funny to see all of the Fresno State “fans” that have come out of the woodwork during this CWS run. 99% of the people who are watching the games here now and wearing their “Bulldog red” couldn’t even name two players on the team two weeks ago. For the most part, I find it pretty amusing how Fresno State fans (in football, especially) like to tout their “success”, neglecting the fact that most of their “success” is built against mighty WAC competition such as Idaho and San Jose State and the like. Fresno State fans carry a big chip on their collective shoulder because, while they have tried so desperately, they have not been accepted into the fraternity of big-time college athletics. When they do experience any type of success on a big stage, their frustrations boil over and they end up figuratively flipping the bird to the rest of the country for short-changing them and their beloved Bulldogs. So, to answer your question, yes, I do believe they are obnoxious.

I like Fresno’s TEAM hitting strategy. They seldom swing at the first pitch and almost never swing at the big looping curve. Their hitters get ahead in the count and wait on a batting practice fastball or flatball. The college strikezone appears tight to me although the umpires are inconsistent. I hope UGA wins but the key will be for the pitchers to get ahead in the count. If they pitch 2-0, 3-0, 3-1, 3-2 all night Fresno will wait them out and toast them. Regardless no more Mike Patrick for me. My sound will be down. He has BSed me to death with useless banter about musical instruments, food, Oral’s wife, etc. etc.

Bigfan - How on earth can you say that UGA does not belong. Plain and simple, they took care of business. They WON the games they were suppose to.

Frenso State just put on a hitting show last night. Tip our hats and moe on. To the people that want to blame the umps. Please stop! The umps did not cost them 19 runs. You guys sound like GT fan base. We got beat, that simple and that is baseball. Pitching must be on tonight. I have a feeling it will be another high scoring game, but the Dawgs will prevail.

p.s. thanks to all the UGA haters out there. You folks crack me up!

I hope are dogs win tonite, but as a dawg fan even I have to admit, we are lucky to be here. They were saying last night, that if UGA wins tonite they will be the team with the most losses in college baseball history to ever win the CWS. Guess that is something to be proud of in that we can really pull it together when it counts.

For those that are whining about calls last night - do we really think it made 9 runs worth of difference.

We just need to consider ourselves lucky as we got all the lucky bounces in Game 1 or else the team would already be runner ups back in Athens.

Let’s hope that luck is on our side tonight - Go Dawgs!

An unranked team, the lowest seed in any major NCAA sport to ever get into a Championship game/series puts up 19 runs against Gerogia’s pitchers?? That was embarassing. FSU, Miami or UNC wouldn’t allow that many runs if they played the Atlanta Braves. Contrary to what some of you are saying - that “Fresno State put on a hitting show” - what really happened was that The Diamond Dawgs put on a Coach Pitch Show. Champions win the big games. We’ll find out tonight who really wants this more.

I am confident the Dawgs will win tonite. Coach Perno has the lineup that will certainly get the job done. Maybe he should have done that yesterday, but who knows for sure. The baseball Guys are tough, as we saw earlier. I believe they will come home “with all the marbles” GO GEORGIA BULLDOGS!BEAT FRESNO STATE!

Where to begin?????????????

Let’s start with Mike. If you move to a city with an NCAA program, of course that program is going to be the main interest in the region. Not sure where you came from, you left that part out, maybe it’s Michigan and you’re a transplanted Wolverine or Spartan fan. If someone from Fresno relocated to Nebraska, they better get used to the talk, hype, etc. of the Cornhuskers. So quit crying about how Fresno and the Valley carry on about Fresno St.

For Erik. The Green V stands for Valley, as in the San Joaquin Valley, where Fresno is located. This region is the argricultural capital of the world. California’s economy, which our agriculture is a huge part of, is the 7th largest economy in the world. Not just in the U.S. The green aspect of the V is to honor the farmers and agriculture in this region.

And Big Fan. Why would you be disappointed to have a team from California win the CWS? Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows that the best high school/college baseball in played on the West Coast. Most CWS chamionships??? USC
2nd most??? Arizona St

Recent world series champions??? Oregon St. (twice), Fullerton St. and soon, Fresno St.

The only reason the CWS isn’t loaded with West Coast teams is because the NCAA loads up the regionals out here forcing us to beat each other. Look at the regional Fresno St. had to win. #6 San Diego, #9 Long Beach St. and #19 Cal. Was there another regional that had 3 teams in the top 20? And for unranked Fresno to win it, well, that should say enough.

Will Fresno win tonight? I hope so, but, win or lose, just give us some well deserved respect.

SmallTown Bulldog, it feels great to be able to talk some trash with you! I mean, hell, when we played GT in football the last two times, that wasn’t any fun. But I dont’ want to compare the other Dogs to GT. You all are alot better than those LSU fans who yell “Tiger Bait” all the time. Can we all agree on that?

I agree with Mike though. Fresno fans are bandwagoners. I’m out East in DC, and I watch every game that is on TV. I read the papers online everyday. And I see how schools like Georgia have real tradition and create a real atmosphere in college sports. Fresno fans don’t get that. I suppose it’s hard not to get sucked up into it when you actually get a chance to live in the moment.

Always wanted to come to a UGA game. I hope one day we can come down there and play you guys in football and the game is just as competitive as these games are. Not as competitive as that sorry excuse for a basketball team we sent down there and you all bounced from the NIT last year.

Good luck to you tonight. Go (Fresno) ‘Dogs!

FS can hit but the chances of them continuing to get those nice hoppers in the gap two nights in a row is slim….they killed us with those last night. I look for our pichers to step it up along with someone like Rich Poythress being a hero in the clutch.

The dogs turned to puppies last nite. Here is what I saw, 1. Perno had that “deer in headlights” look, 2. All Star Beckham with 2 baserunning gaffes, 3. Ga. pitchers that pitched like little leaguers, 4. A FS team that looked determined and hungry, 5. A dawg catcher who should be in weight watchers, 6. a right fielder who throws to home plate and almost ends in the second row. This is a championship team? Not on your life. The Dawgs look like some prior football teams who left home with the greatest intentions, played the role to the hilt, and just got jack slapped by the opposition. THAT IS REALITY! Come on home dawgs, you tried and I’m happy for you, but I wouldn’t want to go to your hometowns and tell the locals what happened in Omaha.

A couple things….

The umps-it is baseball and anyone who follows baseball knows that there are going to be good calls and bad calls. You just have to live with the calls you get. PLEASE STOP CRYING ABOUT THE UMPS!!!!

Tonight is going to be an exciting game. Both teams better bring their bats to the plate if they want to win.

Mike you are right about the band wagon atmosphere around the Central Valley. However, I am willing to bet the same thing is happening around UGA.

Fresno State is not a national powerhouse in any sport. They generally scout local kids and make do with what they have. For Fresno to be 1 game away from the National Championship is a huge accomplishment for the college.

Who is going to win? Who knows!!!!!

Who deserves it more? Who cares!!!!

Which team and fans will be more disappointed if they lose? UGA!!!!!

Will the umps play a major role in the game? Yes!!! Just like any other baseball game.

If UGA loses-There will be excuses up the ying-yang in here.

If Fresno loses-There will be many posts about “I told you so” and blah blah blah.

Let the pitchers pitch, the batters bat, and the umps call the games.

By Coates

June 25, 2008 1:08 PM | Link to this

To the UGA haters saying that the umps had nothing to do with it, even Mike Patrick said the pitch to Ceroine was a ball there is a run and the inning continues. Instead they head back to the dugout deflated and unaware of the strikezone. The ump sucked plain and simple. Georgia has to consistently put it over the middle while Fresno gets the 6-8 inches outside everytime. Georgia did play like crap and didn’t look like a NC contender. I think this goes to Fresno. Oh well nobody expected them to go this far. Fresno is just the better playing team. But the umps have helped them no doubt.

This Fresno team doesn’t need rest, they can play ball and are in excellent physical condition. Fresno’s pitching is way better than UGA’s too. Pitching Pitching Pitching. Thats all it will take to win. Any of you fools who think an offense that only scores 10 runs is “folding up like a cheap tent” needs to have their heads examined. Hopefully, last night we used up the chump pitchers for the quality tonight. I hope Perno thinks about using Montgomery again in relief given last night’s short outing. If Moreau can keep it in the park for a few innings, Montgomery, Weaver and Fields will get the job done. Either way, there is no real shame in giving up runs to Fresno, they are an extreemely good hitting team. Let’s keep it under 10 and we really have a chance.

As a CSUF Fan (F is for Fullerton and not Fresno) and we already have three CWS Trophies, I can say that the pitching on both teams is worn out and makes the outcome hard to predict. I wish they had 3 days to rest and then could pitch their best, but I gotta go with the hot bats of Fresno due to the tired pitching staffs.

And I’d have Orel H “The Bulldog of Baseball” call the last out!

If you look at all the games Georgia has played since the Regionals, they have pretty much come from behind to win. They have also benefitted from the opposing teams errors and poor decision making. As they say, the big mo means at lot. It seems the mo has moved some, but Georgia can bring it back by staying close. Toss up game at best. We will find out which dog is the better. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs will win tonight one way or the other.

For those that are complaining about the umpire’s calls last night….QUIT YOUR WHINING. The 8 run deficit was not caused by bad umpiring…just bad pitching.

The key to the game is pitching…whoever has it will win. Pitching and defense win baseball games; good hitting just helps your pitching and defense out.

UGA had everything in their favor to sweep…they just couldn’t get it done. Final ought to be a heck of a game.

Apparently some people need reminding that the series is tied 1-1. Georgia has won one and Fresno State has won one. Just to clarify, that means Georgia beat Fresno State only two short days ago. So I guess the idea of Georgia beating Fresno State in a baseball game is not as far fetched as some would like to believe. After all, it just happened less than 48 hours ago. I’m not saying Georgia is going to win tonight, just that it is scientifically, mathmatically, and humanly possible. I know that makes me a delusional redneck biased UGA fan so I apologize if I have offended anyone. I know you haters are particularly sensitive when it comes to UGA fa
