A letdown or still a big success?

Georgia lost the deciding game of the College World Series Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs lost two straight games to Fresno State after taking the opener of the series.

Are you disappointed, or did you never expect Georgia to get this far?

What happened to the Bulldogs after winning the first game and taking a big lead early in the second game? How did it slip away?

With a season full of success in Athens, how does the baseball team’s run compare to football, basketball, gymnastics and tennis?

I’m very proud of this team of what they have accomplished throug out of the tournament. Give all the blame for the losses to the umpires that they did not know the strike zone. For the past two games the umpires cost Georgia the games. Go Dawgs

I think worse than losing the series was watching Cerione dropping a F bomb after watching the third strike paint the black. Way to represent UGA on national TV. You embarrassed your team, your parents, and your school. Also, your face looks like a rat.

Defintely disappointed, but the season was a success. To make to the championship was a great accomplishment. I’m sure GT fans are very happy that UGA did not win too! BEE masculine today GT and give UGA props, even if UGA has supplanted your program as the best in state.

I wish they could have pulled it out instead of rolling over and getting stomped by another set of bulldogs in the last two games. However, they still deserve much praise and congratulations for a job well done to make it this far. It’s a pretty safe bet that all but one team in the rest of college baseball would love to be in the position they are in right now—having had the opportunity to compete for a national title.

I’m a little disappointed but I thought UGA exceeded all expectations just to get there. What was most disappointing was the hype about Fresno State being the Cinderella team. I realize much of the hype is for ratings, etc. Im a bit confused about how a team that was ranked in the pre-season top twenty could be considered a long-shot for the national championship against a team who was not even ranked in the preseason polls. At the start of the CWS, their season records were somewhat similar. And, Fresno State had a much better record last year than UGA. One thing I am not confused about is ESPN commentator, Mike Patrick’s man-crush on half the Fresno State team. Geez Mike, keep it in your pants!

Great season, but major disappointment. Up 5-0 and in the driver’s seat in game 2 and they simply lost it. Even the broadcasters were talking about how tight and nervous GA was. They just had defeat on their faces after they lost the lead last night.

Congrats on a great year though. Months from now, maybe we’ll all be able to remember the year as a whole instead of the last 2 games.

It was still a great season for the Dawgs and we are very proud of them. The boys showed heart and determination.

I have two questions though: 1. Why didn’t they pitch inside to Deitwaller? It seems to me that it would have been easier to tie up his swing with the bad thumb. Instead we left three pitches (actually four) right over the outside part of the plate where he could get full extension. 2. Why did Perno tell the guys night before last that they could not let Fresno state get back into this thing in the second game. It was almost like a self-fulfilling prophesy. It seemed like the team tightened up right after Fresno State went ahead for the first time last night.

There could have been a little better job of coaching IMO

Very disappointing loss after winning the first game. I don’t think the Dawgs ever recovered from losing the 5-run lead last nite - looked like they were in a funk for this whole game tonite. They were never into the game tonite, especially on offense, left way too many men on base and could not get the big hit when needed. Still, a great year - 2nd in the country is not too shabby!

Hey UGA fans, I guess this loss was also the ump’s fault. Now what crow are you eating. Always can talk the talk but come up short walking the walk…Let’s hope that the “#1”??? ranked football team proves us all wrong. Doubt it… I think that being ranked #1 is a curse all in itself. But than again if you actually played a team…that ranking might actually mean something.

I am here to applaud the Dawgs. They played an outstanding series. To reach the finals is extraordinary. Were I them, I would not hang my head for a minute. They played with guts and determination, and unfortunately only one team can win. The FSU team came up on top tonight, but our guys played like champions. Hats off to the FSU pitcher and the incredible hitting from Detwhiler! He was amazing. However, our guys have heart, a great manager and represent the spirit of UGA. Go Dawgs!

Champions close it down when they must and with a 5-0 lead last night they didn’t do it. Fresno State took this series from them. While UGA was a gritty team and had a good season, this was a choke job and Perno let it happen. I hate it for kids like Beckham and the other Seniors. Is Perno related to Bobby Cox because they manage critical games very similiar to one another.

I’m proud of the players for UGA, but the coach lost the series last night in the 3rd when he did not pull the pitcher and let 6 run cross the plate. You pitch to win, not play the next night as proof of tonight’s outcome. Still I’m really proud of how well they did this year.

I don’t think it’s a letdown at all. They got bounced out of the SEC tourney so I don’t think many people were expecting much from them. They represented UGA well, and started it off by beating the #1 team in the nation. I couldn’t be prouder. Same way with all the other sports teams. They have good players coming back, and good ones heading to the pros that will be great players there. They have a great class coming in next year to look forward to also. Congrats for making us proud to be the REAL Dawgs!! ….Now I think I hear Football calling!!!!

Redcoat Dawg, great point about Perno putting so much pressure on his team, saying they HAD TO win game two. Fresno definately did what they had to do. Hot bats at the right time. But I just got done replaying the game on my DVR and paid very,, very close attention to each pitch,,, and welll,,,,, it was a Tale of Two Strike Zones. Fresno’s pitcher was getting a good 3 to 4 inches down and away all game. Georgia had to be balls on to get a strike call.

But,, that is the way it goes in baseball,,,,, it stinks,, but the men in blue can truely alter the outcome.

Fresno hit the balls that were pitched to them, but the sure did get some help on the defensive side of the game.

Nice run Dawgs,,, hope to see you back then again next year !!

UGA’s accomplishments this year - especially after a very poor last season - are remarkable. There’s much to be celebrated. Beckham, Fields, Peisel; you will always be remembered for leading this team the way you did during the 2008 season. Great job Coach Perno. Words of advice for Matt Cerione though…poise, composure, focus, class…find a way to fit these things into your game.

Major disappointment only because of the way the Bulldogs played N.C. State then Miami and Stanford. You can’t play the way they did then play like a bad high-school team in the championship. The Dawgs attitude was one of entitlement because of the opponent. They made the same kinds of mistakes over and over again in the batters box. No communication in the field. Looked like they were all trying to make a name for themselves. Not taking anything away from Fresno they are the best team in College baseball. Perno needs to start recruiting like a school that is in one of the big 4. Lack of coaching, plus no heart and grit spellid doom.

From a Tech fan congrats on the run in Omaha. It looked like they were gonna do it after making another comeback in Game 1, but you have to give the other Bulldog team their dues. That is one scrappy team that never says die.

I too was embarrassed for the state of Georgia when Cerione pulled that crap after he struck out. Talk about poor sportsmanship. You gotta swing the bat when the ump had been calling strikes there from the beginning. Nobody’s fault but his own.

Congrats again.

Typical UGA! Teamed together with the General Assembly, perennialy low academic standards, and a massive fan base who financially supports them at their fiscal detriment, and the will to destroy a person’s career (Jan Kemp) when it one threatens cheap success… and you still disappoint? What else could you possibly need? Georgia Southern’s and GT’s championships are built on character and are not known for national embarrasment (Jim Harrick, US Congressional censure, etc)!

I really think you UGA fans need to take a closer look at what just happened to your baseball team. Fresno State just beat some of the best teams in the nation all the way thru the regionals and all I hear the fans saying is that the umpires sucked or that your head coach sucked. Also ESPN was hyping all the talk about what Fresno State would accomplish if they won the National Championship. Well guess what ? They did it and I don’t hear too many people giving them credit. Uga did not choke and if anyone of the kids were mine i would be very proud of the way they handled themselves. They just got beat by another great team that had fate on their side. Go Bulldogs.

To the Fresno State team and staff: A well deserved national championship to a team that earned every bit of it.

To UGA fans: Go Dawgs. Its a lot of fun to be in contention for a national championship.

To the other supporters: thank you for your support, regardless of the team you typically root for. Good baseball is good baseball and these players were awesome.

To the rest of you: Your negative comments about the players and coaches are disappointing. Take a look in the mirror and honestly tell me if you could play as hard, as smart, and as well as anyone on either of these teams. When you finally reach the conclusion that no you can’t, I’ll be happy to accept your apology.

congrats on a strong run and lots of comebacks - in the regionals after losing to lipscomb, against miami, stanford, and fresno!

just asking too much to do it over and over and over. fresno was loose and jumped on that uga pitching - officiating or not - 19 runs is 19 runs. UGA was not gonna score 20. and only 1 run tonight - no clutch hitting with RISP. hats off to fresno and that detwiler kid who rewrote the record books. who would’ve pitched to him after his 2nd hit? bad call, but FSU would’ve scored more than one run no matter what

To the UGA community:

Your Bulldogs (as opposed to the Fresno Bulldogs) were admirable in their skills, raw talent and sportsmanship.

I believe that I speak for many here in Fresno with appreciation at the way your team played. Trust me - we were ALL worried when up by five in the ninth.

I applaud Georgia for their stellar season and remarkable resilience. UGA’s sportsmanship and dignity in this game - in this whole series - has resulted in my admiration.

I don’t expect Fresno to go this far next year, but I will be pulling for UGA in their endeavors. I can proudly say, “Go Bulldogs” and have no care about the question, “Which one?”

Cheers to UGA and its fans. You all have shown what this is all about, and will be welcome here in Fresno. UGA, its players and its fans are amazing.

For those questioning whether Fresno was a ‘Cinderalla’

  • Their RPI ranking was #89. If they didn’t win the WAC tourney they wouldn’t have been invited to a regional.
  • FSU only had 24 players compared to 30 - 40 for most college teams.
  • Their best pitcher Tanner Scheppers (97 MPH) was injured and out for the season.
  • Their #2 Pitcher was injured most of the series.
  • Their Starting 3rd baseman had 4 dislocated fingers.
  • Their Starting RF has detached thumb ligament.
  • They faced 6 elimination games.
  • They started the season 8-12 and lost to Sac State the two games just prior to the WAC Tourney.
  • Best of all All their seniors are getting a degree.

Congrats to Fresno State and Georgia….both should be proud.

I have read many comments on this blog, dicounting and mocking Fresno St. One sticks out in my head after game 1, “bull pups”. Well, we now see who the real pups were, GA bull “whipped pups” with their tails between their legs. I read so many excuses, bad officiating, bad this, blah, blah, blah. No excuses from Fresno, just played and WON. I’m tired of the biased against West Coast teams. Maybe this will knock you off your high-horse and help you realize that sports don’t only exist East of the Mississippi.

I am highly disappointed with the loss. Can someone please tell me why with runners on first and third with no outs we did not bunt to move the runners over. I even asked my 13 yr old shortstop son who bats third what he would have done he replied “I would have bunted to move the runners” and we made Deitweiler look like an all-star. Dave is a good coach but I don’t think we took full advantage of our opportunties.

Well it’s always the fault of the coach when a team loses. What exactly was he supposed to tell his team “Ya’ll go out there and lose the second game” Yeah right! Fresno State had the bats and the pitching for the last two games. The better team won. Enough said.

Congrats to Fresno. They played out of this world. Ive never seen a team put on an offensive display like that. Unfortunate that UGA had to run into them…bad timing. Now, as far as the Cinderella label…that is total hype. Fresno WON their conference tournament. They were 18th in the preseason poll. UGA wasnt even on the list. The state of California is where the majority of the schools holding national titles in baseball reside which means that much of Fresno’s interleague play is against pretty tough competition. That being said, of course they would rack up more losses. (funny how that never seems to be an issue when everyone dings SEC football teams for losses against tough comptetition). No offense to UGA but the SEC isnt exactly known for baseball. UGA got knocked out of the SEC tournament. SO, to all you “fresno state is the best cinderella story ever” folks, the facts tell a different story. Fresno was a solid team that got hot when it counted. Kudos to them. Tournament time is when it counts!

Congrats to UGA on a fine season. There is no shame in finishing second. It is disappointing to read all the whiners here complaining about the strike zone, loaded bats, etc. You simply ran into a hotter team. Give Fresno State their props without excuses. Then again, the SEC thinks they’re God’s gift to sports. Matt Cerione is an embarrassment to your school. What a little jerk. Beckham is a stud, but he needs to give Patrick Swayze his hair back. Isn’t it amazing? A coach takes a team with a losing record in ‘07 to the CWS finals in ‘08 and moms with 13 year old shortstops want to question his judgment. Arizona State fans blistered their coach in the blogs after losing the super regional to FSU and now seem silly for having done so. How much sillier do UGA fans sound complaining about Perno?

You do not win every game and every loss is not the reason to weep, even if it is the CWS finals. Life has losses but this UGA team won more than it lost, met or exceeded every reasonable goal and conducted itself with dignity. Now you negative “fans” get a grip and ask yourself again, “what is or, who has a problem?”

What kind of underdog is Fresno State? Ignore their record for a moment and look at the final scores of their postseason games. In the post season all of their losses were close games in doubt until the last two innings. Most of their wins were blowouts. They didn’t just barely get over the hump or barely beat teams, they went out and thumped the best teams in the country. Hats off to those guys over on the West. I’d say what separates them from all other cinderellas I can think of is that they didn’t win by being on their best and squeaking by struggling opponents; They won handily.

In other words, they were not a lucky postseason team getting favorable matchups or favorable bounces…They came together and were clearly the most dominant team in the country throughout the postseason tournaments. This may not get the national attention of David Carr and the Bulldog teams that could beat everyone in the country except WAC teams, but to me this is the most outstanding showing we’ve seen of the West Bulldogs on the East Coast.

It was a GREAT season but a DISAPPOINTING loss. Coach has to learn when to use the intentional walk to keep key players from ripping you. Georgia was out-coached and outplayed. When Georgia is good … they’re good and when they’re flat … they are really flat. Where was the fire and zeal and go get it attitude of a winner? FS definitely wanted it worse than the dawgs.

I feel the coaching decisions had a lot to do with the losses. Bring on the football dawgs and let’s see a real winner. Congratulations Diamond Dogs.

My main concern is the mental stability of the Dawg Nation. Hope you enjoyed the little appetizer last night. It’s gonna be just like this fall unfortunately. The disappointment will be ten fold and I can’t wait to hear the calls for the coaching staff to be fired when that schedule takes its toll. But hey, you got a set of black jerseys on the way to “Black Out” Sanford. And to save money you’ll already have the appropriate color to wear to the funeral of your season this fall.

Georgia was out coached in game two from the fourth inning on. We should have had the last game mentality going, pulling out all stops, using the entire bullpen instead of playing as though it was a regular season game. The Fresno State coach used his picthers much better…But the missed called third strike on Cerione was crucial,we go from one out bases loaded to inning over and the Dawgs never recovered.

It’s not just UGA ESPN is biased against. It’s any team from Georgia period. From the Braves to the Jackets, Falcons and UGA! As for Cerione - wasn’t he the hitter that got jobbed on that “strike” em out - throw em out dp in game 2? Perhaps he was a little frustrated with the terrible srikes-balls calling. Usually that goes both ways, but for some reason it didn’t in game 3 (Is Eric Gregg in the house?).

That aside, I’ve got to say this was a huge choke job by my Dawgs. The mental errors were everywhere. Letting a fly ball drop with two outs and the bases loaded. Throwing right down the middle to Detwiler. Pitching to Detwiler. The players and coaches weren’t in it to win for some reason.

Hats off to FSU. They came ready to play, stayed focused, overcame great adversity, and did the job. Didn’t seem like a cinderella to me.

If you strike out 5 times in one game you lose the right to argue balls and strikes indefinately. What a bad example for kids across the nation to witness. I would like to see him transfer to some college in South Dakota before next season starts. In my opinion UGA lost the series mostly because of him and his poor attitude. WOW how do you pitch to a guy that was killing the ball homerun then a double then pitch to him again instead of an intentional walk. That was the worst case of coaching I have seen in a long time

I say a good run for UGA baseball. And I am far from a “dawgs” fan. Compared to football, this is way more impressive. More games, more hurdles, and hey, they made it to the National Championship game, something the football team hasn’t been able to say in a long time. Again, good admirable run for this team. I enjoyed watching them. Now, on a negative note, the punk center fielder, Cerione, deserved to be thrown out of the game for arguing balls and strikes, then going back into the dugout and screaming to the umpire F you B*tch, only 2 feet from the camera which was catching his little tyrade. A heck of a player, but looks like he’s been watching way to much MLB. I played college baseball not that long ago and I can tell you one thing, had I or a teammate shown our asses like that, it would have been the last time. I’m sure the NCAA is awfully proud of how he represents college atheletes. I know he’s just a kid, but have some respect and grow up a little bit. It can’t be that hard, all of his teammates seemed to have kept their emotions/tempers/and pouting under control didn’t they?

To answer the question that was asked on the blog, this season was a great success. The CWS finals were a letdown, but, that does not take away from the great seasont that the diamond dawgs had. If anyone from any other school wants to argue than I ask them on question. Where was your team last night? Rice, Miami, LSU, GT, UF, South Carolina, UNC, etc. were all at home playing with themselves, not playing for a Natty.

Congratulations on a great run! I am disappointed at what appeared to be a lack of support by the Athletic Dept. and others who should have been in Omaha. Maybe ESPN’s poor coverage was to blame (I get get tired of the constant inane blather by the announcers), but I did not see on camera Gov. Perdue, Pres. Adams, Damon Evans, and CMR only on Monday. (I think a Savannah QB meeting called). UGA was not even in attendance. I know that Baseball is not the draw that FB is, but for a national championship, I would think more administration would be in attencance. A great program and the Diamond Dogs have a great future.

carmatter, YES…these dogs did choke. After that comeback on Tuesday night, i knew it was over. You could see it in their faces the next day.

They didnt adjust. When you are in a game like that and you see the ump got “his” strike zone going, you gotta adjust. The UGA batters were constantly behind 0-2 all night.

Game 3 of the CWS with the bases loaded? Sometimes you gotta swing that long iron object thats over your shoulders!

Im sick and tired of GA teams coming up lame in the big game! Wont be any different when the 08-09 NCAA football season is over with. Dont believe the hype folks…too much to overcome for the Gridiron Dogs….Put my paycheck on that.

First, let me say it was a great season for the UGA baseball team and I don’t think anyone expected them to be playing for a national championship. The one thing that disturbed me in the last two games we lost was apparently Georgia batters had a memory lapse on HOW TO SWING THE BAT. I would love to know the stats on those last two games of how many strikes were called while we were STANDING THERE LOOKING! Numerous beautiful pitches were left unswung on. When you put the ball in play, good things happen.

First I’m proud of the Georgia baseball team for getting as far as they did. But they stunk up the place in game two … perhaps thinking they were already the champs and had only to show up to make it a reality. They had a great opportunity … rested pitching staff, up one game to zip, and a five run lead in the second game … to win it all. I thought they were on their way! But after that they simply got outplayed. I’m sure all the guys feel terrible about it and probably most will replay what went wrong in their minds the rest of their lives. And as much as it hurts it’s best to just learn from it and move on. It was still a great season. But there’s still a lesson here for the football team. And I hope CMR will use it. Unfortunately instead of an example of excellence it will now be an example of what can happen when you DON’T finish the drill. There are very few givens in sports and no one yet has figured out a way to measure heart. But it’s more than fair to say that those other bulldawgs have plenty of the latter. They refused to give up or lay down and practically willed themselves to victory. And you really have to admire that in a team … even if it’s not your own. I know I do! Congratulations Fresno State on an outstanding season.

Redwood - Keep in mind how much stuff all of these people have going right now. I totally agree that the other coaches and administration should support each other. I don’t want to throw Perno under the bus, but, he has not attended a football game since he was a student and I can guarantee you that he doesn’t even know where stegman is. I sat behind coach Felton at the GT game and saw coach Dooley in the stands. Damon was in the box with Adams as well. I have also ran into Coach Landers on more than one occasion at football games. This is atleast a step in the right direction.

Exactly my point Blue Devil Block! Some bloggers may not agree with US, but the reality of it is…FRESNO’s batters didnt stand there like deer in the the middle of the road with bright lights in their eyes!

FRESNO swung those bats, and yep…when you put the ball in play..things happen, sometimes good sometimes bad, but its the last game of the series folks.

Here are just a few to recap for all: * Umpire’s strike zone sucked * Perno sucked * The pitching sucked * The hitting sucked * The team sucked * RPI of Fresno sucked

It was a great season no matter what. If you would have ask fans before the season started they would have been happy to end up 2nd. And, didn’t FS go to the last two CWS? And, weren’t they ranked in the top 20 at the beginning of the season? Our getting there from a losing season last year is as much a story as theirs only ESPN didn’t paint it like that. DP has done a great job and will continue to improve. This run will only help to continue to improve our recruiting and make DP & the team hungry for another shot. We’ll have a CWS title within the next five years, ten on the outside.

First of all, who cares about baseball especially college baseball. It’s extremely painful to watch and the game last way too long. The Beckham guy on GA, you might want to change your name because you are far short from the real Beckham in LA. David Beckham is a real athlete and for someone to have the same last name as his you will only disappoint everyone. D Beckham is a idol to people across the globe and you are a baseball player that only your friends, parents and a few people at GA will ever really know. The baseball thing really hurts you in the end. Its a pathetic sport for the kids who couldn’t handle sports where fitness is a major part of the sport. Fat kids wearing pants in the summer…how sad. There is a reason why the olympics cancelled baseball. By the way, UNC was the best team.

However, I’m sure Rice, Stanford, LSU, FSU, NC, Miami, and hundreds of other teams sitting at home would have loved to have the UGA Dawgs spot in the finals. Sadly, in ten years, few people will remember who the runner up was.

Appears to me that all UGA needs to do to win consistently, and big, is to get still more of their kids from East Cobb. Believe me, there are plenty that don’t give a damn for the North Ave Trade School and will give Georgia a perennial winning program.

Next, baseball, perhaps more-so than any other ‘team’ sport, is a series of individual actions - you make the good pitch, or you don’t…you get the fat part of the bat on the ball, or you don’t…you make the play, or you don’t - and Fresno’s guys made those plays. Congrats to them for it.

Next, next, doubt if the sports Gods were likely to give us two championships this year (shut up Gators), so guess we’ll have to settle for football.

Finally, at least that ‘let me see if how much of a smart-a** I can be by wearing that same gator-blue dress one more time’ ESPN fleld-person, Erin (gator) Andrews, decided to wear white (or perhaps it was, ‘you come in this dugout with that same dress on one more time, you just might get a little tobacco juice on it, heh, heh, heh.’) - or maybe it was that she couldn’t find enough belts and sweaters to make that blue sack look different.

The “Fall” began in the third inning Game 2 with runners at second and third, 2 out and Mendonca at the plate with UGA up by 4 runs. Perno instead of walking him (you know the guy who either hits a home run or strikes out) to load the bases giving you an opportunity to have the infielders play back and give them a play at any base, lets the pitcher throw him a pitch that landed in the right field bleachers. Any little league coach knows that’s not the way you play the game. After that, the wind went out of our sails and the merry-go-round began… Poor coaching on Perno’s part when the championship was in our grasps….

Mike Patrick, commentator for ESPN was horrible. He never could get the players names right. Pitiful performance….ESPN can do much better….

Well, although they did well getting to the Championship — the true measurement in competitive sports and what we all love about sports is “who can make the plays when it counts”

As a former Dawg I am dissapointed at how the Georgia team performed under pressure —it doesn’t matter what they did before —this was the time—and you could see in their faces, in contrast to the Fresno team, that they did not have the right mental attitude to carry them to the title — Fresno did —and they won.

I believe the coach is largely responsible for getting the players ready to play —-he didn’t —they looked defeated from the first pitch—taking 3rd strikes, swinging at bad pitches, hoping to get on base —-totally different than Fresno —-

You have to give credit to the coach at Fresno and their players —who showed what it takes in “big” games —this was the biggest—the National Title and Georgia didn’t show up and play like they were capable.

Too bad —it was a nice run though

I just hope Coach Richt doesn’t follow Perno as he said “they are setting an example for our team” —hope not —

I am proud of the Dawgs. They put together a great run, but they ran into a buzz saw. If you think about it, FSU could be one of the best sports stories we have seen in a long time. I just wish we did not have to hear that story 11 times in a 9 inning game…enough already ESPN.

No matter what happen on yesterday, this was a great season for the Dawgs! Any and all basher on here would have loved to see their team play for a National Championship (stop hating on the best team on the east Coast).

Would we have loved to win, yes. But, let be really clear on this, the best team won it all. I really hated the fact the ESPN was 100% behind FSU from day one, but I guess since they had the television rights, they could do and say whatever. I also hope UGA learn something by watching the FSU celebration….(Maybe us next year). Dave Perno has done and excellent job with this team and need to be paid according to his accomplishments. Look out for UGA… “We are back on track”.

To LSU, Would you consider the last two UGA vs. LSU football games “big games”? Georgia won those games by an aggregate of at least 40 points (one of those being the SEC championship game). If Georgia could lose two games and win a national championship in football, Mark Richt would have won 3 by now.

The UGA Dawgs had a great season, no doubt - a very talented team, and they have nothing to hang their heads about. I think the comments about “ESPN’s pro-Fresno bias” are really funny. I guess a lot of it depends on which side of the fence you are on. I know that the usual ESPN treatment for Fresno State teams, particularly football, is like that of a red-headed stepchild, or a pesky younger brother. It tends to be very condescending: “Fresno is a nice little team, but they play in the WAC, and don’t really play anyone, so they can’t be very good.” I thought we might get past that when the football Dogs played USC in 2005 and took them to the wire at the Coliseum when they basically hadn’t lost there in over 3 years, but it still didn’t happen. When Fresno State succeeds it seems like it is dismissed as a fluke or luck instead of a well-coached group of talented players, but still over-achievers, playing hard.

It’s also interesting that Perno’s comments during the portion of his pre-game “motivational” speech that ESPN showed prior to the game, were from “little brother” script. He said “those guys haven’t played the teams that you have…we play in the best conference in the country, the SEC, and we ran right through it. Play to your identity.” Unfortunately, it looks like his comments were prophetic. They did play to their identity - not quite good enough. I thought “Ooooooh, that’s very dangerous - he is taken Fresno State lightly and telling his team to take Fresno State lightly.” Looks like that type of attitude contributed to the loss.

But believe me - ESPN never was or is biased pro-Fresno State. From a Bulldog fan who watches ALL the games.

    Peace, out…

I really don’t understand all of this “typical” talk from opposing fans. If it’s “typical” to consistently win conference championships, compete for national championships (and win a number of those), hold title to the SEC All-Sports trophy, be a fixture in the top 10 of the Sears Trophy standings for overall athletic performance, be the most profitable athletics department in the country, and be in the top 5 of collegiate merchandise sold, I’LL TAKE THAT ANYDAY. I guess your train of thought is that if your team can’t beat UGA, you just hope to God that someone else will. Reggie Jackson was right when he infamously said “they don’t boo nobodys.” Congratulations to another outstanding performance by yet another UGA team.

I had high hopes for the dawg team until the second game when it became obvious tnat the coach didn’t care if they won or lost. To stay with that pitcher whom everyone in the ballpark could see didn’t have anything and let him give the game away was demoralizing to the team to the point they did not care about pulling themselves up. It is hard to rise above leadership. that is what is wrong with the Braves… no urgency, on extra push in the big games. this coach would do well with Bobby Cox

It was disappointing mainly because UGA didn’t show remote signs of life during Game 3. Had they fought like they’re capable and still lost, it would be much easier to take. Fresno is a great team; very gritty and determined, so hats off to them as they played like they actually wanted it.

The epitome of the night was seeing Miles Starr stand as still as a statue as 3 fastballs sailed by down the heart of the plate. How in the world can you take those 3 strikes with a runner on 3rd?

Perno, although a good coach, didn’t offer much help to our pitchers when they got in trouble. Fresno’s coach was making the moves he needed to make, talking to his pitchers, calming them down. As UGA’s pitchers got pelted, Perno stared blankly into the field. Again, how can this happen?

On the biggest stage in your sport, you look like you’re DOA. Very disappointing.

No matter the comments of balme this or blame that! This was one of the bst College World Series to date. There was never any realy dominant teams that were blowing people away. A lot of guts and stamina and keeping heads in the game put teams kept teams in games. The Fresno State team played as a team, cared as a team and looked like a team. georgia on the other hand had hopes on individuals instead of the team. Team collaboration and fun won this one for Fresno, despite being the underdog. All said there were a lot of great games to watch during the College World Series and all teams should be pround of their efforts.

There is NO excuse for UGA to not destroy a team who’s ERA is in the 7’s. Last night’s pitcher had an ERA in the 5’s and they made him look like F’n Cy Young. No excuse. They were flat. FST has somne good hitters but with a horrible pitching staff and an exhausted one at that, the Dawgs should have capitalized.

I would be disapointed if my Bulldogs lost but definitely would be very proud of them…you guys have an amzing program and had an unbelievable season. 2. For the VERY FEW fans trying to make the series loss about bad calls…please give it up. There is not one article or comment I have seen outside of the state of GA citing that. Shouldn’t that tell you something considering every major sportswriter in the counrty and millions of fans watched this series? The vast majority of GA fans have been proud of their team and full of class but I guess there are always those few fans for every team that have to have some excuse on why and how the win was “taken” from them. Good luck in the fall with football GA…you have a fine university and athletics program!

All the talk about how tough they were and how many times did they say that cinderella wears cleats? I almost puked. UGA had it in the bag and they blew it. Our pitching collasped with their little league throwing. 85 mph fastballs right down the middle. Too many walks, and horrible fielding by our left fielder. Talk about fickle fans. This blog is the epitome if that. 3 days ago, UGA baseball could do no wrong. The fans were thumping their chests and the ‘nation’ was full speed ahead.

Today, the team looked scared, Perno didn’t have them ready, the pitching was terrible, the umpires cheated, our hitter’s sucked, Perno can’t coach, etc, etc, etc.

Did you ever stop and think that you just might have gotten beaten by a better team? It wasn’t a 1 game winner take all…it was best 2 out of 3.

My gosh, Uga was beaten by Lipscomb for crying out loud. They got hot at the right time and carried that momentum all the way through to the championship series. Same thing with Fresno State. Unfortunately for Uga but fortunately for FS the momentum was there till the end.

WOW! I wanted to wish UGA and their fans the best. It was a great series and a good comeback by your Dawgs in the first game. Believe me it let the air out of our tires, but when we are down we played on heart. #47 Sprague was a former little leage kid I coached and if his heart than was any indication of his future you will see him again. Your team was awesome, Your SS, catcher, 1B, 3b, the catch by the left fielder where he smacked the wall and snatched a homerun from Susdorf, they played great and you should be proud. We do not get to see this too often in the central valley, but we are proud of our Dogs and you too should be proud of your Dawgs.

Georgia played scared last night and hit a slump. What I am disappointed the most in, is Perno got outcoached in a couple of situations. Maybe the lower tier teams in the West have better ball players than the East. They were certainly tougher and grittier than our boys. Still the dawgs had a great season to even be there, but came up short. I was hoping to see that team on the field in the fall on a Saturday afternoon at Sanford where we could have cheered them on for their accomplishment. I guess not!
