Tiger-less Tour: What will it mean?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tiger Woods’ season apparently is over. That means a Tiger-less British Open, PGA Championship and Tour Championship at East Lake.
Has Woods become so dominant that his absence from the remaining major tournaments render them less prestigious?
Also, it has been revealed that he played the entire U.S. Open, which lasted 91 holes for him and Rocco Mediate, with a double stress fracture in his left leg. Does this add to his performance as one of the greatest in sports history?

The AP story you guys have says this will be the second straight year Tiger hasn’t played in the Tour Championship at East Lake.
Unless I was seeing a ghost while I was at East Lake last year, I really think Tiger was there to clinch the tour championship last year….

Good for Tiger. An asterisk may have to be placed next to the winner of the British and the Player’s Championship though. Tiger is a stand up guy and he wasn’t being dramatic when he was wincing on Saturday, as some have aledged.
I was cheering for Rocco as well but I don’t feel too bad for him. With all that face time and the incentives in his existing sponsors and the sponsors that will sign him with his newfound popularity, he probably made at least $3MM at the Open.
Tiger is one sports figure you can point your child to as a role model. I admire how he doesn’t wade into politics or other issues where his opinion is no more relevant than the average man on the street. The only area of his life where he tries to showcase himself is on the golf course and even then it’s with class.

Woods not being there does not take away from the remaining two majors. He probably would have skipped East Lake anyway. It definetly adds to his performance and hopefully won’t have a detrimental effect on the remainder of his career.

Troy - can’t totally agree with you. Yes he stays out of current affairs, but role model no. They have to keep the microphones away from him on the golf course when he makes a bad shot because of the expletives he is so fond of saying. I was at the Masters about 4 years ago with my son (6 at the time). Tiger hit a bad shot and let out a g-d it not more than 50 feet from us. I’ve heard him do it many times on TV as well.

Not sure what all the fuss is about. He’s made tons of money already. Would more make a difference, or make him a better person? Maybe he should look find a meaningful ways to give some away. That way he could actually do some good with it instead of spending it on the usual mansions, cars etc.

Ron,
Are you kidding? GD is the worst think your 6 year old heard of the golf course. WOW if only all the other athletes our kids look up to used that instead of the F, S, and other much worse words on the courts and fields. Tiger is a great role model for our children. He manages to keep his family out of the public eye, is the most confident, determined, mentally strong athlete playing sports, ANY sport today. You are a fool if you cannot see that.

Troy, I know that Tiger has the T Woods Foundation and does other things outside of golf that are charitable but his on course anger demonstrations and cursing need to be addressed if he can be truly pointed to as a “role model” for my child. I know several other players that act simiarly but being the marque figure in this profession I think he needs to seek advise in this regard. Arnie gave up cigarettes when he realized the impact and influence and Jack mellowed and worked on his persona with the public. Don’t think it matters? I have an older friend who smokes to this day and it came about because his golfing idol, Arnold Palmer, smoked. as he said, “if it’s good enough for Arnie then it’s good enough for me.”

Those who love golf realize they have the privilege of watching, in Tiger, the greatest golfer of all time.
The only thing that will keep him from breaking every record is injury and personal motivation.
I just don’t understand the negativity and snide remarks when his record speaks loud and clear —- at this stage in his life, he’s the greatest to ever tee a golf ball up!

Congrats to Tiger on his recent US Open victory. He is doing the right thing by getting this taken care of now. He’ll be back to his winning ways, that you can count on. Now we get to see who is going to step up to the plate and take advantage of a great opportunity to get a major on their record. Its really wide open now. maybe we will find the nxt Tiger Challenger during Tiger’s time off. I think its good for the game. I’ll miss Tiger, but it won’t stop me from watching the next two majors.

Jason It’s called “anger management” How does blurting out explectives enhance his game? It only demeans himself. In his chosen endeavor he is under a microscope and millions are watching and he does weld the power of influence and impersonation on younger fans. Personally I would like to see him address this flaw in his character. As for his golf game he is without a doubt on another level I would hope that he would elevate his self control to like proportions.

The TV ratings for the rest of the year will fall off a cliff. Tiger is golf. I’m a very casual observer—as in, I do not play golf and I watch 2 or 3 tournaments a year—and there is no reason for me to watch any more this year. The good news is that golf fanatics won’t care. They’ll watch any tournament. The bad news is that there are very few golf fanatics out there.

Golf will miss Tiger, but Tiger is not bigger than the Game of Golf itself. He makes golf fun to watch by keeping you on the edge of your seat. Making the impossible shots, that no other player seem to make. Yes, in my opinion Tiger is the greatest Golf player to this date in time. But no one person is bigger than the sport itself, even Tiger but he is so d_ _ close.

Tiger is probably a better role model for some kids than their hater parents and that’s sad since athletes are not meant to be role models. Since many of you haters can only preach hate in various forms, what are you teaching your children? To feel entitled and not work for success because anyone they see working hard for success must be hated upon instead of praised and becoming a motivational tool. Miserable losers typically hate on others since successful winners are busy with their own prosperity.
Athletes are not supposed to be role models! Athletes should be admired for the accomplishments and scorned for their improprieties just like anyone else in life. The parents/guardians of a child should be the role models.

Donna P If he “just wanted to play golf for a living” then he could probably get a standard $10-$20 a hole automatic one down press at his local muni and make a pretty fair living. Hate to burst your myopic view on life but when he, Phil, Paris, Brittney, et al chose a profession that includes “celebity” status then they should have some realization that they are “role models” and what they do and what they say do carry weight amongnst their adoring fans. If this weren’t the case then Nike, Buick, etc. wouldn’t be shelling out millions for his endorsement.

You’d hope we’d actually hear about some other golfers now, but odds are the media will focus on “how is this tournament different since Tiger’s not here.”

Why when Woody Austin throws his club, screams or goes into some on course rant he is viewed as a buffoon, immature or some other negative descriptive however when Tiger exhibits similar behavior it is viewed as competitive intensity??? Just curious. (and don’t say that level of play status because Woody is highly ranked and did represent Team USA at last years Presidents Cup Matches)

While watching the Open last weekend my girlfriend asked why Tiger needed a security team on the course. Some of the comments on this forum provide insight into the thinking of many people and the “bitterness” Tiger envokes in some. Like Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron before him, Tiger prevails as the best in his sport through physical pain, death threats and ignorance.
His only public fault is the occassional cursing picked up by the on-course microphones, but then nobody is perfect. I may have winced from his choice of a wife but I’m not hating him for it!
Get well soon, come back and kick more b*tt on the course.

quaildawg,
As a casual golf can I can answer your question with a question. Who is Woody Austin? That’s probably why Tiger gets the pass and Woody does not. The “golden boys” of any league are going to get a pass. Kevin Garnett is a big A-hole on the court but because he’s a Celtic he gets a pass for being the most intense player in the NBA. Michael Jordan talked smack more than Deion Sanders but he got a pass because he was more marketable and Deion didn’t. Tom Brady knocks up one chick and moves on to another. Many athletes get frowned upon for fathering children out of wedlock but Brady’s social life is glorified by the media as he’s living the dream, Super Bowl QB scoring with supermodels. Bobby Cox drops profanity like UPS drops fragile delivery boxes but he’s considered one of the greats and such a “player’s coach”. Well I’m sure kids who watch Braves games get a nice shot of the bombs Mr Cox drops at record pace. Also, how positive an influence is it to keep getting kicked out of games when you disagree with a call? Maybe that’s why those Stephens County boys were so verbal in their discontent while getting blown out instead of taking the butt whipping gracefully.
Stars get a pass as much as the public and media can allow. Unfortunately, it’s not about right or wrong anymore. On a personal note, I point out “cheating” and bad behavior to my son no matter what sport we are watching to show him what not to do. I also point out the players who are behaving appropriately to show him how he should carry himself in the public eye which at his age is simply school.
All of this helps sum up why celebrities should not be treated as primary role models for our youth. Yes, they do have influence, but so does everything else a child observes. It’s up to parents to teach right from wrong. My child has heard profanity used in elementary school that would make a sailor proud. Reading Tiger’s or Bobby’s lips isn’t going to hurt any worse than hearing it from other kids. That’s the reality…
By ashley

First of all, the only “roll models” any child should have are their parents. Second, those of you concerned about the “cursing” the Tiger does should look in the mirror. You probably have said much worse, and maybe in front of your child.

I don’t care for Tiger Woods, but it really is more of not caring for how the media treats him. The media is playing up to his name recognition with non-golfers. For many true golfers, that is annoying. For instance, ESPN will often provide about 5 minutes of golf coverage per show on the first and second round of a PGA event if Woods is playing and if he is not only about 2 minutes. When he is playing, 3 of the 5 minutes is devoted to him, even when he is not in the lead. Then they’ll spend the last 15 seconds telling us who the leader is. I grew up a Johnny Miller fan, but the way he butt-kisses Woods is disgusting. Even when Woods isn’t playing a tournament, Miller talks more about him than any golfer in the field. I could go on, but certainly he deserves more attention than other golfers, just not to the extent the media gives it out. That is why I think him being out will be good for golf, but not so good for the media. One saying I use to hear a lot (but not so much anymore) is you can tell a real golfer by asking if they are a Tiger Woods’ fan.

I can imagine Ron has NEVER been angry in front of his children — or else he would definitely have gone to anger management classes. Future helicopter parent alert! I’m sure many people hate to see Tiger on tour, because he wins 9 of 12 tournaments on a torn ACL — but he’s BLACK! Gasp! Next thing you know, this redneck country will have a black president. People might actually think we aren’t racist anymore! That would suck.

Tiger is most certainly the greatest golfer ever. Maybe Bobby Jones was better but we really don’t know considering he only played for a few years. As an avid golfer and golf fan I will certainly continue to watch golf but will really miss when I know he should be playing if not for the injury. He is a joy to watch.
On to Tiger’s only flaw we know of. I truly admire the man from staying away from the media as much as possible. However, Tiger must tone it down on the golf course when things go bad. The constant g-d’s, f-bombs and club throwing must stop. The game of golf is about integrity and sportsmanship. Actually saying fiddlesticks or something else would be awesome. There is no need for it. If all of his shots were not shown live the majority of people would never know it but since it is he should be showing all of the golfers how the game should be played. While the skill is there and everyone should strive to be that good he rants are exactly what golf is not about. Not to mention it is dangereous. Playing in a tournament one time I had a fellow competitor kick his putter in frustration after missing a two footer. He accidentally let go of the putter when he kicked it and it came directly toward my head. If I wouldn’t have been paying attention I would have been hit square in the head. Accidents do happen and that would be awful on live TV. Also one of the main rules of golf is to leave the course in better condition than you found it. His club throwing and pounding clubs into the ground does not allow for that to happen.

Just one other comment about the cussing on the golf course. All of the viewers on TV and people in attendance are allowing the purses for golf tournaments to be so large. For those of you that do not think the cursing is wrong why don’t you let out an f-bomb, a g-d or maybe throw your computer on the floor everytime you are frustrated at work in front of the person who writes your paycheck while your clients are on the phone or standing in front of you. Even if you are the best employee in your office I bet you want last long. Just putting in context. He shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it just because he is the best athlete in the world.
It would be a true shame to always have to watch Tiger in tape delay because the FCC mandates it one day.

The PGA will become a “second place” show until Tiger comes back next year, case closed….Whoever wins the British and PGA will hear ” Well what if Tiger would have played question “…and well they should….Tiger has taken golf to the next level and beyond, wish him the best on a successfull return, like someone said, ” now my weekends are free “, could not agree more.

There should come a time when the hidden names used here and in similar blogs are simply banned. Either one uses their real name to post on these things, or shut up. I’d gladly support such requirements, for freedom of speech should include the responsibility and willingness to actually stand behind the words made in cyberspace as well as any other place.
With that in mind, I congratulate Tiger on his achievements. He’s a class act. We have lived in a (somewhat) free country where one has been able to reap the benefits of one’s abilities and talents. I hope it stays that way.
Unfortunately, there’s ugly jealousy, selfishness, whining and outright prejudice on display on this blog and most others. We’re giving an out of proportinate voice to many angry cretins. Sadly, this is the rule, rather than the exception, in anonymous cyberspace. The days when hidden bozos, who talk big and hide behind a phony screen names, should end. My name is Gary Neidhardt, and I am proud to stand behind these words. Can you say the same?
Now, those that talk so big, come out of the closet and say who you really are! (I won’t hold my breath!) They’ll continue to hide behind their phony names, because they have no guts, no class, and no common sense of decency. Such cheap shots originate mainly from cowardice and envy. It is time to make such big-mouths risk living with the consequences of their putrid tongues, and have them reap what they sow, which would be all the punishment necessary. After all, the lash they use on others will be the very lash used on themselves.

When the best in the business is not playing, rating suffer. We want to see the best and face it, Tiger is by far and wide the best out there today. Anyone watching him in the latest US Open knows that without him, this would have been just another tournament. Tiger is chasing history, the record books. He is giving it one helluva run I might ad. I hope he heals up fast and gets back on the tour as soon as he is able.

Okay Tiger is the dominant player in golf today. Yes the ratings always drop when he is not playing. Tiger haters and Tiger lovers watch when he is playing. As a fan of golf on TV, I still watch when he is not playing, but dang he sure makes it more interesting when he does play. The trick shots he makes are something to behold. And for whatever reason, other players either fold or play the game of their life when playing Tiger. Remember Bob Mays duel with Tiger, I can’t recall if it was a PGA Championship or the Open. It was awesome golf by both players, Tiger came out on top. This last week, Rocco gave it all he had, I became a bigger Rocco fan after watching him play his heart out with his aw shucks attitude. I hope he continues to keep his play at this level.
Sure golf will miss Tiger, the PGA tour players, not so much. Thanks to Tiger, the purses are much higher and will remain at these levels and wait for him to comeback in 2009. Master’s badges for his 2009 comeback should go through the roof.

Of course this will hurt the golf ratings there’s no question about that. I myself did not realize that so many people disliked Tiger though. Is it because of his comments towards people not watching hockey??? And since when did this become a racial, money thing, or about him being a role model? The blog simply asked two questions yet you get people talking about any and everything else.
Hope Tiger heals to 100% for 2009.

My wife and I only started watching golf when Tiger started playing. We don’t watch the tournament if Tiger isn’t playing - the game just seems to lack excitement. Yes, there are the occassional sweet shots from other players, but they are few and far between. For us - no Tiger, no watching golf. And for those bashing Tiger - your whining simply underscores the fact that you’re jealous of his success (or his wife).

I walked the golf course here in Atlanta in the 60s and 70s. I’ve walked with Arnie, Jack, Lee Trevino, Doug Sanders, Johnnie Miller. The best shot maker I thought was Lee Trevino. I will tell you what Tiger Woods is: Only the best Golfer I’ve ever seen and I’ve been watching him since he was an amateur.

“Why when Woody Austin throws his club, screams or goes into some on course rant he is viewed as a buffoon, immature or some other negative descriptive however when Tiger exhibits similar behavior it is viewed as competitive intensity???”
Because Tiger’s usually in a position to win when he does it (i.e., under intense pressure) and usually regroups and prevails after he emotes. Austin, however, rarely tops the leaderboard and seems to let his outbursts affect his play.

The guys better take advantage of his absence, because if none of the gutless “minus Rocco” players could beat him when he is playing on one leg, how are they going to beat him when he’s healthy.
When he comes back, he’ll probably win every tournament he plays in from now on!

For those of you that say you’re tired of Tiger, get over it. Y’all are begrudging the guy for a specific reason, and you know the reason. When Nicklaus, and Palmer were in their primes no one thought ill of their sucesses. Tiger has made the anointed guys in his peer group irrelevant, and I’m talking about Cink, Love, Howell III ect. I really hope he inspires some talented kid of color to take his place, and I hope he’s as dark as India ink.

To summarize thus far: - Tiger is the greatest. - The media goes overboard about him, i.e.”Tiger, Tiger, Tiger… oh, BTW Joe Hacker is leading the first round by 2”. - The first TV commentator to say during the next tourney, “what if Tiger were here?” should be fired. - Cursing is a blemish on the public view of his character.(agreed) - The Tour attendance and TV ratings will suffer in his absence. - Many of you will enjoy golf this summer with his absence. Enjoy it while you can.

When my friend Bobby Cremins was coaching at GT the mike on the hand held camera at his end of the court was always turned off. So what if Tiger lets go w/ a few bombs-maybe someone else read the research that noted the average middle schooler uses swear words over ninety times a day. Not that’s it’s right, but it’s the AMERICAN WAY. And I say those of you whom have shown extreme hatred on this blog, you’re racist because otherwise how could you hate the greatest of all time in his sport?

Tiger Woods is agreat golfer and I like to watch him play the game.I believe he has raised the level of play for all of the competition. It’s the annoncers trying to hand him the game before it’s finished. If he’s five behind and one hole to play, the rest of the field is just that, the rest of the field. Makes no difference who’s winning,Tiger should be in front the way they see it.

Anything you can do, Tiger can do better. So, have fun winning some titles, now that he’ll be gone for a bit. ‘Cuz you hardly were going to win too many of them if he was still playing.
I do know that some folks (you know who you are) are happy he’ll be out for a while.

I think what he did was selfish. I don’t argue that he will go down as the greatest golfer of his generation, but I think that by going against his doctor’s orders and risking further damage, which has apparently happened, was dumb. I guess he considers himself a Dr. now also. What if something happens and the leg doesn’t heal like should and shortens his career. He will probably say he should not have played in the Open. Hind sight, as they say, is 20/20.

I am not much of a Tiger fan but do respect his ability as a golfer. While he has done a lot for the sport, I would be hard pressed to call him a role model! To use the GD words and throw his club down after a bad shot (which he did on National television during this tournament) hardly makes him a role model. While I don’t want anyone to be injured, I must say that I will start tuning in again to watch the tour. All you hear is TIGER, TIGER, TIGER. There are 124 other players with their tour cards. Would love to hear something about them for a change. It may make the game more enjoyable for me.

Isn’t ironic, A couple of weeks ago when asked who would win hockey’s Stanley Cup Tiger said “no one watches hockey”. Now that he is hurt no one will watch golf….. KARMA my friend

JJ, Your comments have me laughing. It is KARMA isn’t it? However, in this case, I will be watching now that I don’t have to hear Tiger’s name in every sentence. It was like watch NFL football with John Madden calling a Packers game. It was Favre this, Favre that. I had to turn off the sound to enjoy the game. I truly believe he was having an affair with Favre. Woods is interesting to watch and again, I respect what he has done on the course. However, when he is gone, the game will still be here and there bill be someone else to steal his spotlight. I honestly can’t wait for that day to come.
