Mets fire Willie Randolph

Still apparently reeling from last-season’s monumental collapse, the New York Mets finally cut ties with manager Willie Randolph - in the wee hours of the morning Tuesday.

The move was announced at 3:15 a.m., hours after the team defeated the Angels in Anaheim. Randolph will be replaced on an interim basis by Jerry Manuel, the former Chicago White Sox manager who was born in the south Georgia town of Hahira.

As a Braves fan, what do you think about this move - or are you more concerned with what’s going on with your team to be worried about the Mets?

For the Mets’ fans, what are your thoughts? Did you see this move coming? Did it happen too early in the season - or not early enough?

And for baseball fans as a whole, what are your thoughts on the move? Let us know what you think.

I as a Braves fan have been more concerned about the internal forces keeping us down than any one team. Lack of a lead-off hitter, veteran pitching, those dreaded injuries etc. etc. But ultimately I don’t think the Mets can underperform much worse than they already have, so maybe this is the kick in the butt they needed. I don’t think any interim replacement will completely outmanage Willie Randolph, but this is the kind of move that is more a shake up and change in pace maneuver.

First of all, Mets fans don’t think about Atlanta. They focus on getting their team in order, making the playoffs & trying to win a ring. This NY/Atl rivalry is a joke!! When have the two clashed in the playoffs?? When were both involved in a pennant race?? Since the Braves have enough problems of their own, their fans should stop worrying about the Mets and focus on cleaning up their own backyard…

The best thing you can say about the braves and mets is that they are both consistent. By thay, I mean they both are consistently inconsistent. Neither can stack up to the philly filthies or the fla. phish. in short, both suck and will continue to do likewise.

For me, it means that the Braves might have one less team to worry about. Of course, this just goes to prove that the Mets ownership has no clue of how to run a successful franchise. 3:15 AM press release? Sounds like Bobby Petrino’s doing PR for the Mets!

Give me a break! The New York Mets stink because they are the New York Mets. Their fans ride them all the time and plus they have a lot more media scrunity. The Braves will always rule the Mets!

Good move for the Mets. Randolph was a distraction and a horrible leader, if you can call him that. Scared to coach and talk to his players but liked to pull that race card when things weren’t going his way. And don’t give me that “oh he apologized for that” crap. He believes or he wouldn’t have said it. Good riddance.

I can’t say if its a good thing or not. The players on the team haven’t been getting along the way a championship team should get along. I’m just sorry he got fired less than a month before he was going to Manage the all-star game.

I think the Braves need a new owner, instead of a “corporate” owner. Furthermore, while I think the money some of the players are paid is rediculous, this is the way it is. When Ted was the owner, it seemed money was not an issue. I don’t think firing Bobby would “fix” the Braves.

By Matt

June 17, 2008 10:37 AM | Link to this

And another thing, When are teams like the Mets going to realize that team chemistry is what wins divisions, not the signing of high powered superstars? i.e. Carlos Delgado and that supposedly “great pitcher” they got from the Twins.

If the Mets think that firing Willie Randolph is going to make them better then they are idiots. Nothing good can come out of this for them. There’s a video on youtube I found one time looking for Braves videos called, “Mets: A One Year Dynasty”. I thought it was a joke but it was all Mets fans talking trash. As a Braves fan I had to talk back a little but it was a fruitless exercise. Whatever dynasty they thought they had is now over. They are screwed. We just need to win and focus on not hitting into double plays with the bases loaded.

I gotta laugh out loud at the Mets fan that said his team and it’s fanbase doesnt look at this as a rivalry.. got news for ya bud.. the Braves have emotionally owned your team and it’s fans for better part of what? the past 15 years?.. we knocked you out of the NLCS in 99… and either in 2000 or 2001 (cant recall cuz there’s been so many heartbreaks for you guys against us).. that 48 year old closer ya’ll had (Johnny Francoooo) gave up what proved to be a season ending homer run to one of the many listed Mets killers in Brian Jordan. Or how about Ryan Langerhans’ extra inning game winning hit late in the season a couple years back to send you guys packing from yet another shot at the playoffs. Just face it Muts fans.. your team is severely OVER-RATED and we own you.. period.

Just another example of spending a ton on players is a waste of time and money. I wish all the professional athletes & owners take note of this. Especially in these times, players getting paid $18 to $26 million a year, while it costs us fans $80 for a single game and the $40 in gas to go there makes me sick! Mets got what they deserve! Hope both NY teams sink to the bottom. As far as the Braves, this won’t make a difference. Braves will still have their problems and unless someone takes control of this ship..we will sink too!!

If Mets fans don’t care about Atlanta then why are you reading our paper and writing in our blog? Who cares what Mets fans think anyway, it is the Mets players who matter and I bet any of them that have any sense see it as a rivalry. If not, why are they bothering to play in this division?

The Braves have their own issues to worry about, such as a lack of clutch hitting, a wobbly bullpen (Mike Gonzalez comes back today, I hear), questionable manager decisions, poor fundamentals, and in some cases, a lack of heart.

Having said all that, the Braves are in better shape than the Mets are. Which isn’t saying a whole lot, of course…..

I don’t care one bit what the Mets do. Randolph seemed like a good man and knowledgeable about Baseball. If he was fired for being too soft on players and not inspirational then the same can surely be said about Bobby Cox. Let’s see how the Mets do and maybe we can be rid of Cox.

Well Forsyth - not sure what your point is other than you are another yankee who has come South in search of a better life. I’d much rather be considered a “fair-weather” Braves fan than an obnoxious Mets fan anyday. P.S. I guess Hampton is working out for us about as good as the Mets pitchers worked for you guys during your “penant-run” last year.

While I have no love for the Mets, the way their organization went about sais dismissal shows just how poorly run their organization IS.

Now how this will affect us is an uncertainty; there HAVE been moments where a new dugout boss shows up in the middle of a season to bring their team to greatness.

But as it stands for The Now, the Mets are a house of cards that’s just asking to fold, imho.

Personally, as a Braves’ fan, I think it’s slightly amusing. As a MLB fan, I think the way they went about letting Willie go was kind of rough. After all, how would you feel if your boss called you 3 AM and fired you over the phone?? Poor taste, if you ask me.

The Mets as a team - from the front office all the way down - is in shambles. I have a friend in NJ who has pretty much kept me up to speed on the Mets - his team. We gently tease each other about our two teams. However, he’s kind of over the Mets right now. Big 180 degree turn for any diehard Mets fan, wouldn’t you say?

Not too concerned about the Mets vs Braves for this season. I’m more concerned as to whether the Braves can stay healthy enough to make a division race out of the NL East or not. The win last night in CO was terrific, though!

Couldn’t care less about the Mets and Willie Randolph but this about as low class as anything I have seen in a long time. Why not do it before they left on the road trip? However if the Braves would decide to fire BC,3AM would be fine with me.

Does this mean that Gary Carter will be getting a call? I say we bring in the Murph to replace Bobby. I think we let him finish this year though. What the Mets front office did was weak & pathetic. I hope our front office has a little more respect to Bobby. Does anyone know if insurance is paying for Hampton’s injuries??

Mets has no class and so is their owners and GM. At least show some respect to a guy who almost won the World Series in 2006 for Mets. It is Willie Randolph who snapped our 14 Division Chap. If I could I would fire GM, Omar and Owners for firing someone in 3 AM road trip. What a class less Club.

The Mets’ problem hinges on the fact that Wright, Beltran & Reyes are extremely overrated. Keep in mind, overrated doesn’t mean bad. They are good solid players, but done are the superstars everyone thinks they are. Beltran’s good numbers come in bunches and has hit less than 280 5 years running. Wright is not even close to Chipper. He strikes out 100 plus times every year and has had only 1 year of 400 OBP. Reyes isn’t even close to Hanley Ramirez or Jimmy Rollins, but is lauded as the best ss, just as Wright is considered the top 3b in the NL. Bottom line is the Mets are a good team, but not the great team everyone thinks they are. They’ll finish with a winning record and will contend for a wildcard, but they won’t win a title.

Its about time Randolph was fired. It seems there was speculation almost every night on sportscenter whether or not Willie Randolph would get canned or whether he would be spared. Every single day you had to wonder will he be fired today or will he continue to manage. It got to the point where Willie probably couldnt get any sleep at night and he was continually asked about his fate. Willies fate was sealed last season when the Mets stumbled down the stretch to miss the playoffs. The Mets team had underachieved this season to the point where the Mets fans couldnt take it anymore. Now maybe Gary Carter will get the managerial job that he has been hoping for for quite sometime. I dont think Gary Carter will do any better than Willie Randolph but if Carter gets the managerial gig, I hope he gets fired by the end of this season.

Reading through all of this, I can understand you die hard ATL fans who keep wondering why the hell there are so many replies about a team you dont care about. Plus the fact that now you are certain the Mets are done for. Why should you care? But if this is what the Mets needed, and they beat the Braves this September, its your sorry butts I, and the rest of the true Mets fans, will be laughing at.
