Wish John Smoltz a speedy recovery

Braves’ veteran pitcher John Smoltz had surgery on his ailing right shoulder Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala.

The Braves are expected to make an announcement on the results of the procedure, which will sideline Smoltz for at least this season and could possibly signal the end of his illustrious career.

Here’s your chance to wish the veteran righthander good luck and a speedy recovery.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Mr. Smoltz—hope to see you out on the mound next year. If not, thanks for being the long-term face of the organization and having more class than most of the other players in baseball put together!

I hope everything went well. You a true dominator that exemplified determination, talent, and guile every time you took the mound. And so many times when you took the mound, you excelled and gave the Braves the chance for victory. Keep crushing

Dear Mr. Smoltz:

Get well soon! You’re a guaranteed Hall of Fame player. All of those who love baseball are proud of you and respect you. You’re in an elite class of athlete. You’ve got the talent and poise of Tiger Woods and the grit and determination of Johnny Unitas. You love to compete but you also love people. Atlanta is lucky you are a Brave. If I had one wish, it would be to see you pitch in one more World Series game. How about Game Seven in Atlanta versus Detroit next year?

John, I was so sad for you to read about your need for surgery. Your efforts this year (and last) to pitch through the pain were very admirable. I watched your long toss and bullpen session in Philly and was hopeful. I admire your endurance, competitiveness and desire to win and really enjoyed watching on TV your 3000th K. I am happy that you had the surgery so that pitching again for the Braves could be possible. While I do not yet know the outcome, I wish, hope and pray for the best for you and hope that next season you will be back in the rotation. God bless you. Bruce

Thanks John. My grandmother, a 90 year old blind lady, used to sit by the radio every night and listen to the games. You were her favorite pitcher. She passed last July. Nobody cheered harder. So in honor of Mrs. Bessie Boyett, thank you for what you have meant to our Braves and I hope you return so she can watch you from heaven.

Thank you for everything. You are an asset to this community; an asset to the team; and most of all an asset to our Lord. You have given alot to this community. God bless. And know that God is going to lead in this situation and HE will let you know where HE wants you to be. If it is not HIS will for you to be back as a player, my prayer is there is a place for you in the Braves organization. We don’t want to lose you from our community.

John, I can hardly find the words. If there’s a way for you to come back, you will. You’re such a competitor, you’ve probably gone on longer than many of your doctors thought possible. If worse comes to worse and you can’t pitch on the same level again, God will continue to show you the path where you can contribute. You’ve meant so much to so many for a long time.

I’ve enjoyed the game and have watched you master the craft for so long that I can’t imagine the Braves without you. You left nothing on the field, Mr. Smoltz. This fan wishes you the best - a speedy recovery, and more years in the organization in some capacity, if that’s what you want. Thanks for the memories. Thanks for being a part of Atlanta.

I would like nothing more than to see Smoltz pitch ONE more postseason. Next year….take the Clemens approach….and dont come back till June at the earliest!
That way your fresh (hopefully) for the postseason.
Next year (provided we get another #1 starter with the money well save from Hampton and Glavine) will be a very good one!

As a 26 year old guy who was born and raised here in Atlanta, the prospect of not seeing Smoltzy on the mound is profoundly sad.

I understand baseball is a sport, but sport serves the purpose of allowing us all a bit of time to forget about whatever problems or stresses we have and just sit back and watch.

I know I have had more than one bad day brightened by watching Smoltz take the mound, whether it was during his dominant post season performances, or seeing the lighting strike in Turner Field when he took the mound to close.

It is like Smoltz has been a dependable friend, even though I have only met him in the context of autograph sessions like many other fans. I always knew that no matter what was going on, if Smoltz was on the mound I was going to see a guy giving it his all for himself as a competitor, and ultimately for us, the fans.

For that I say-Thank you Smoltz.

KEEP LOOKING UP

John, I know you’re a strong Christian, in whom Christ lives.

Many years ago i heard you share your personal testimony as a Christian, at an event Walt Wiley sponsored.

That day you also gave testimony to the fact that you were trusting Christ for the healing of your arm.

I came away from that luncheon with the sense that you were indeed walking in His faith as far as the recovery of your arm was concerned.

Though yes John, you are now clearly older, your present age certainly is not a limitation to God.

As you well know, with man your recovery may seem unlikely or even impossible, but with God all things are possible.

Luke 18:27 (NASB) “But He (Jesus) said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

Galatians 3:5 states that miracles can and do come by hearing Him with faith.

So hear Him John, through the truth of His Word, and let His faith arise in your heart about your recovery.

As a result, you’ll be able to testify in faith now in a similar way to what you said then. And then too, you’ll be in a “faith position” to see His miracles come forth in your life and circumstances — to His glory!

We fans have greatly appreciated your career as a Brave John, and I believe more is yet coming!

Just a word of encouragement, as from Him, to keep looking up — in faith!

John: From all the reports the situation doesn’t look good for you to pitch again. This prognosis is for a normal human being. For you it just means a little longer before you regain your rightful place on the mound. You have always been a great physical specimen, but the real hole card for you is your relationship with JESUS CHRIST, the Great Physician. I know with your relationship and the prayers of millions of fans your return can be miraculous. If that isn’t GOD’S will for your life, he isn’t through with you by any stretch of the imagination.

You have been an inspiration on the field and off and we know that God has a plan for everyone’s life. Be open to that plan because you are His child and He only leads us in the right direction. If you cannot pitch anymore, God can use you in baseball to be an inspiration to others and He can get the glory. If baseball is not in your future, God has something exciting for you, butI believe we all need to have you in our baseball lives and with the Braves organization. Thank you for all you’ve done for baseball and for our Lord’s work on this earth.

Retirement or not, much thanks for a grand career, and here’s hoping the rehab goes great. (And that said, here’s one selfish fan who would love to see you back next year — even throwing that knuckleball you experimented with a few years ago. It’s just not right that the Braves, the team of Phil Niekro, hasn’t had a knuckleballer since him.)

John you are a true professional and I have enjoyed watching you play and compete since 1992. To see a player stay with one team and be a leader both on and off the field has been a joy. If we only had more players like you in baseball. I wish you a speedy recovery and I hope that I will see you back on the mound very soon. If it is not meant to be, thank you for your hard work and the many memorable moments you have made with the Atlanta Braves.

John, Thank you for all the years, the grace, the determination, the professionalism you have brought to the Braves during your career. I’m sorry that things didn’t work out as you had hoped as far as the postseason and that “one last shot”, but you have still set a standard by which past and future Braves will be measured against. For selfish reasons, I hope you can come back but if it’s not to be, then I’ll look forward to your Hall of Fame induction.

Hi John. I simply refuse to give up on the fact that I will not see you again next year. I have been a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves since 1966 and a fan of yours since late 1988 and 1989 when you joined the Braves. So I will be praying that when I make my annual pilgrimage to Atlanta from Winston-Salem next season you will be either in the dugout or in the bullpen as that Atlanta Braves Icon that I expect to see when I come to Atlanta. God bless.

I didn’t intend to read all the “get well” wishes posted so far, but I read a few and my heart just kept saying, “YEAH!” “RIGHT!” “I feel exactly the same” - “He IS the BEST” so here I am, much later, having read them ALL and yes, in tears, but loving you and praying for your recovery with a new vigor. Enjoy your season as a “fan”, heal quickly, and we’ll pray for ‘just one more’… thank you for making my summers special, and my memories sweet. Love you always!

John - my husband and I spent our fifth anniversary last year watching you pitch against Detroit at Turner Stadium. It was the first time we’ve seen you pitch live even though we’ve followed your career from the beginning. What an incredible night for us! We live in Birmingham, and I had to take my daughter to the pediatrician on Monday. Her doctor is next to Dr. Andrews’ office. I said a prayer for you as we stood waiting on the elevator. We are praying that your injury will quickly heal. Know that you have many fans sending you prayers and well wishes. Hope to see you back on the mound! Otherwise, we’ll see you in Cooperstown. God Bless!

Thanks mainly for being the classy face of our franchise, and sticking with us for so long. I almost cried when the damn Yankees were trying to steal you. We look forward to you remaining with the Braves for so many years to come, breaking Leo Mazzone’s records, all while winning PGA Tour events in your spare time. And the Braves Nation will be behind you all the way to Cooperstown either way.

I followed the Braves in and from Boston, to Milwaukee, and on to Atlanta. Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette, Johnny Sain were great, but your career has got to be rated up there with Dizzy Dean, Bob Gibson, Bob Feller, Sandy Kofax, and all the rest of the GREAT pitchers in baseball history. We hope you can make it back, but only the Lord knows at this point, and he ain’t told either of us yet. Hopefully, when you do retire, this mess won’t mess up your golf swing.

Thanks a million, and God Bless. Bill Mangum Decatur, GA

John…by the things I have heard from other players that faced you and from what I have seen over the course of your career, no one is more respected and thought of than you. The sports station in Greensboro that I listen to plays the statement made by Jim Rome that states what a “freak” you are having done both closer and stater roles. I know in my heart that if you want to rehab and return, you will. Even if it takes more than one year, I believe that you could do it if you want it. I myself hope you want it. There is no way to say how much I have enjoyed watching you lead this team over the years. Watching you wince in pain on the mound has been painful for me, as it is never easy to watch one of your greatest idols giving up the ghost. You never quit gave in or bemoned your sad state. If only we could bottle fortitude like yours this world would be a better place. If you never pitch again I hope that you get to at least play center field for one game, if for nothing more than to grant a warrior his final wish. John,

I was devastated to hear that you might not be able to come back. I hope and pray that you can. I have enjoyed watching you the last 20 years. I remember you jumping onto Greg Olson that Saturday afternoon after the last out against Houston to win the NL West. The first of 14 titles. Without you, the Braves would not have had that run, including winning the WS in ‘95. But besides all that, you are probably the best ambassador the sport has ever had. God bless you. Best wishes and I’ll pray for a speedy recovery.
