Will Chipper receive All-Star start?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Chipper Jones of the Braves is hitting .420 and leads NL All-Star voting at third base. Remarkably, he hasn’t made the All-Star team since 2001.
Jones told the AJC’s Carroll Rogers, “It’s kind of depressing to me because I’ve had — to me — what I think are some pretty good first halves, what I think is a pretty good career, and I haven’t made an All-Star team since ‘01. … But I’ll take it. Got to make a splash to get people’s attention? Got to make a splash.”
Chipper has been an All-Star five times. Should he have received more All-Star appearances? Will he get the starting nod this year or will the Mets’ David Wright overtake him?
Ho does Chipper rate among third baseman in the NL, and in the majors as a whole? Would you rather have him or Wright if you had a team?
Are you going to make an effort to cast your ballot for Chipper? Should Atlanta fans show their appreciation for his season and career by flooding major league baseball with votes for the third baseman?

Chipper is a great player, but if you were to start a team there is no doubt you would take David wright. He’s younger, he’s a better defender, and offensively he can be a 30-30 guy every year. Wright is a younger version of Chipper, their stats are very similar at Wright’s age. Chipper hitting .400 is a great story, I think he can do it abnd it will make for great drama come September. The key will be when he hits a dry spell will he draw enough walks to keep his average up. There is a big difference between an 0-3 or an 0-2.

I would take Chipper over any 3rd baseman in the game right now. Look at his consistency, even after signing a big contract. He remains the player who produces, no matter what His character is above many ball players of today. I have watched him since he came up to the Braves and have never been dissappointed with his performance.

Wright can only wish that a decade from now his career looks anything like Chipper Jones’.

Although I disagree with Wright being a better defender, you’d have to start a franchise with him over Chipper, only because of the years Wright has ahead of him. There is no question who should be the NL’s starting 3B in THIS YEAR’s All-Star game. If Chipper doesn’t get the nod this year, he obviously never will.

A lot of y’all thought Mr Jones was through because of injury 3 yrs ago and now they pose the question, would he be the 1st player you choose to start a franchise.
The answer would be yes if you asked me 12 years ago.
My favorite all time Braves.
1) Smoltz
2) Chipper
3) Niekro

If Chipper played in NY, Boston or another high-profile market, things would be different. He’d be on billboards, in TV ads and in every all-star game. David Wright is good, sure, but HE’S NOT Chipper Jones. We are lucky to have him in Atlanta. I honestly can’t believe we’re even having this conversation. He’s Chipper freakin’ Jones. 1st ballot Hall of Famer and it will be a treat for me to tell my kids about him. The steady-swinging, team player who always played his best and put his team, his city and his fans first. I shiver when I start to think of a Braves lineup without him and hope he can find a way to play another half-decade. We should start the MVP chant soon. He’s bringing it home in ‘08.
Oh yeah, I choose Chipper over New York’s over hyped David Wright to start a franchise.

Hey I love me some chipper, but I don’t see how anyone can honestly say that A-Rod isn’t the most productive 3rd baseman (or anything) that exists in today’s game.
But Chipper definitely deserves more recognition than he gets. He has the absolutely most genius plate discipline I’ve seen.

Chipper without a doubt is the best baseball player Atlanta has ever had besides Henry Aaron. Come on Chip stay on the + side of 400 we know you can do it buddy! And if he does he may even pass Aaron as the best Atlanta Brave ever. What do you guy’s think?

I love Chipper too, but those poll results made me about fall out of my chair laughing. A-Rod is best 3B in baseball still no questions asked. Why are so many of us Braves fans on these blogs such homers??

It is fitting that A-Rod was injured at this time so the rest of baseball can take notice of what we have seen for a long time….CHIPPER IS GREAT!!!
To compare A-Rod and Chipper is like having to choose between your favorite adult beverages. Each one does what it is supposed to do when it is called upon. Bottom line, it gets the job done!!!

I think Chipper is future HOF. But the self pity isn’t becoming. With the exception of last years’ Gold Glove, he has gotten the recognition he deserved.
As much as I dislike the Mets/Yankees, they have 3rd basemen who can play…especially offensively.
Chipper should relish the competition because it makes his accomplishments all the more praiseworthy. If he outplays the competition he’ll not only get recognition, but he’ll set the proper example a leader should set.

If Wright finishes with more votes than Chipper then I will stop watching baseball. I still can’t believe Wright won last year’s Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Award at third base over Chipper. But that’s ok… because David Wright will never be Chipper Jones.
I think we should vote as many times as possible for Chipper (and McCann too. Kotsay, Escobar and Blanco have done a great job too, so they deserve a good share of votes). In other years you voted only 25 times with an e-mail account, but this year you can continue voting (wait until they send you an e-mail, like 2 or 3 days after you get to 25 votes).
So vote for Chipper. I think you don’t have to make an effort like this blog says. You have to do it because he deserves to be there. I’ve already given him like 225 votes (ask your sister/mother/anyone who isn’t interested in voting, so you can use their e-mail account(s) and vote!)

Chipper Jones, no doubt about it. He should have own the GOLD GLOVE last year but mlb choose to give David Wright, SHAME! This year Chipper should get Gold Glove + Batting Title, and NL MVP. Yeah Chippeeerrrrr!

Agreed on the sentiments that this shouldn’t even be a conversation. Some splits of the two should settle this.
David Wright’s career OPS against LHP: 1.007. Against RHP: only .890.
Chipper Jones’s career OPS against LHP: .902. Against RHP: .975.
David Wright’s career Avg is .309 yet his BABIP is .336, inflating his avg. Surely the BABIP will come down as he plays more, depressing his avg (& OPS).
Chipper’s career Avg is .310 and his BABIP is only .317, demonstrating that his numbers haven’t been inflated by luck.
David Wright has been pretty good down the stretch in his career: career OPS in July, August, & September/Oct are .851, .968, .939, respectively.
Chipper has been consistently great down the stretch in his career: OPS in July, August, & September/Oct are 1.022(!), .976, and .971. (His worst month is June, with an OPS of .878.)
Wright’s “Clutch” stats over his career are good. Here are his career OPS’s in various circumstances: 2 outs RISP: .857. Late & Close: .885. Tie game: .922. Down 1 run: .932.
Chipper’s “Clutch” stats are better: 2 outs RISP: .891. Late and close: .925. Tie game: .913. Down 1 run: .921.
Overall, these are obviously two quality players. But since Chipper has been a better offensive force for a much, much longer time (thus proving he’s got the skill and brain to adjust over many years - the true mark of an elite ballplayer), you have to go with Chip. It’ll be interesting to see Wright’s career numbers in 10 years or so.

There is no way in hell Wright should get the start over Chipper in the AS game. Barring an 0-50 streak, CJ should be hitting .400 or better well into late June. DW’s only credientals are that he plays in NY. He should do the honorable thing and give back that bogus gold glove he got last year. AS voting is nothing but a popularity contest, why else whould Jr. Griffey be in the running? AS selection should be a combination of fan’s vote and manager/ Gm’s selection. Everyone knows the AS ballots are filled by a bunch of NY fans. Who the hell would put Paul LoDuca on the AS team in 2006 over McCann. Now it seems B-Mac will be screwed out of an AS start by the die hard, clueless Cubbie fans voting for Soto.

AROD stops hitting in October. That makes him the most talented and most productive choke artist in the Major Leagues.
Thats my two cents.
I’ll take Chipper any day!

With no active soccer blog on the ajc(and there ARE soccer fans out there…really) I wanted to introduce those who might be interested to a new blog.
This blog covers almost all aspects of pro soccer. With the US team currently playing friendlies in Europe and the Euro cup about to begin, this blog is an excellent source of info.
