Glad Cox is staying?

Braves manager Bobby Cox has signed a one-year contract extension through next season.

Cox, who is in his 23rd season as the Braves manager, ranks fourth all-time in victories with 2,28. He also holds the all-time record for most ejections (137 as of May 24).

Are you glad to have the manager who has guided the Braves to 14 division titles, five National League pennants and one World Series championship, but failed to lead the team to the playoffs the last two seasons? Or is it time for the Braves move on?

It’s was time for him to move on years ago. This guy is too old and the Braves could use some fresh managerial talent. His ego won’t allow him to quit.

Having Bobby Cox back for another year is great news. I know that it might effect Terry Pendletons decision about maybe exceping a position as manager for another team next year, but it might have a positive effect on Mark Teixeira coming back next year or signing a long term deal. That might be wishful thinking on my part with his agent being Boris but it can’t hurt.

This is great news! Bobby is an incredible manager and so respected by everyone in baseball. We are so lucky to have him, and one day, when he finally hangs it up, we’ll realize how great we’ve had it these last 20 years with him as our manager.

I don’t know if this is good news or not. Cox kills me with his pitching changes in games, and until lately, his refusal to hit and run when the situation screams for it. But who would we trade him for as manager?

By Go Dawgs!

May 23, 2008 5:55 PM | Link to this

Not just yes… but HECK YES!!! I’ve been disappointed ever since Bobby started talking last spring about ‘08 being his final season. We need him as long as he’s willing to stick around. Just this afternoon on Colin Cowherd’s ESPN Radio show, Chipper Jones raved about how great it is to play for Cox and how many of his former teammates come up to him and say they wish they’d never left Atlanta, because Cox is the best manager they’ve had. Yes, the Braves only have one World Series title. But, what they’ve been able to accomplish with Cox is remarkable. The Phillies and Mets are setting fire to huge piles of money, which led to them winning the last two division titles. But, the Braves are still right in it, and Bobby’s the reason.

Justing must be a teenager to make such a silly statement. Any real baseball fan would give their eye teeth to wtch Bobby manage. I am constantly astounded at how vocal a supporter Cox is during games - shouting encouragement from the steps for each batter … throughout the entire at bat. The last few years have been his best jobs as a manager - injuries would have made a lesser manager fold. Cox does not know how to NOT work his hardest and his players play for him … full out. He doesn’t panic either. Hall of Fame manager for another year? Absolutely!

By Bobby Cocks

May 23, 2008 6:20 PM | Link to this

This is a great move for 2 reasons. First being the fact that Bobby Cox is arguably the greatest manager in the league right now. Secondly, I don’t know if I want Pendleton as our next manager. Maybe Bobby can stick it out long enough for TP to find a job elsewhere. I really have to question the fandom of those that say Bobby needs to hang em up. Apparently they don’t know how well respected he is in the game today, both by other coaches and players who confess to wanting to play for him.

The only way I want Bobby Cox removed from that dugout is in a pine box. as long as he has a cigar a day and the fire to manage I estimate we have many, many fine years until that happens. That guy does more with less than anyone I’ve ever witnessed manage a big league ball club. He is iconic, and by far one of the most respected, most successful, and most admired managers in baseball….bar none. This just made my day.

Bobby Cox is the best manager in the major leagues. He is the most insightful, patient, loyal, dedicated, honest leader anyone could ever want to work or play for and anyone who has ever put on a Braves uniform or been in management knows and understands this. If he and his family are good with this decision, then I am elated. All you had to do was watch the last 4 games, the Braves play hard, all the time, its all he requires…the other team on the other hand appeared to be out of control…lack of a strong management system. The manager on the field may not have had the support of the guys upstairs, which is another aspect that makes Bobby and the entire organization so good. It is good management from the bottom up to the top down. Any aspiring manager should take notes and read John Shurhotz’s book. Bobby, do what you need to do, but please find a successor that has retains your qualities and style. I have been a fan since the 70’s. I tried to call Ted Turner when he fired you in 81.

I will cry the day that Bobby no longer manages the Braves. I’ve watched and admired him for half of the 31 years I’ve been on this earth. And from all the times that I’ve turned on the tv set and invited him into my living room, he seems like family to me.

well, so long as we just want to live with 1 world series title, heck yeah lets keep him. there’s been only one constant in all the braves failings in the playoffs, and that’s cox. it’s time for new life, new hope. but i guess we’ll have to wait. this isn’t college football where winning your conference is a great accomplishment since wining a national title is as much about luck of how the chips fall as anything. wining the world series is the goal and cox has failed with teams that have had enough talent to win it all. he needs to go.

Bobby Cox should have retired years ago. In one playoff series a few years back, Cox did not use a starter as mid relief. He said he was saving him for the next game. Their was not a next game because they lost.. He is a decent full season manager. However, he has been out managed in most all of his playoff games. Time to go!!! Apparently, Atlanta fans like mediocrity!! In the past ten years, the Marlins have won two or three World Series.

No

Wait until the postseason (“IF” we make it) and then watch who beats us manufacture runs while our hitters try to jack it every at bat and do nothing but hit long outs.

We need some new blood at Turner.

How in the world can someone mention one managerial move that didn’t work out to prove he shouldn’t be the manager??? The man is not perfect. No manager is. Bobby Cox knows how to manage a clubhouse. Listen to the players. They love Bobby Cox. Players want to come to Atlanta to play for Bobby Cox. That’s enough for me. Thank you, Bobby Cox. I have been a Braves fan since Tony Cloninger took the mound against the Pirates in April of 1966. People forget all of those 100 loss years. Bobby had a hand in changing what people think of Atlanta baseball. I’m glad he’s coming back.

What? Chuck Tanner wasn’t available? Heck, let’s bring back Rick Camp and Bob Horner while we’re at it!

Fourteen titles and just one Championship. I don’t care how many rabbits this guy pulls out of his hat in the regular season, it’s the post season where a manager proves his mettle and Cox has been consistently outmanaged in the post season. Until such time that this team decides that just making the playoffs is not good enough and shakes things up, Cox will be just fine.

Cox continues to be the most over-rated manager in the history of baseball. He could never fix the Choketober Braves of the past and has spent his Braves career making so many horrible game management decisions that it’s embarassing to all long-time Atlanta fans. Never has someone accomplished so little with so much. We should have sent Cox packing a long, long time ago.

Justing is nuts.

Bobby Cox is easily one of the greatest managers in baseball history. He’s not going to win it all every year, but that doesn’t matter. He’s still one of the best and will always be. The idea that he should have “gone out to pasture” years ago is completely insane.

I don’t see where some of these “haters” get off bashing Bobby Cox get off. I know every one of you aren’t perfect and so what if he stays with Reitsma too long. WAyyyyyyy too long. Bobby is one of the greatest managers in baseball history. Dispute is please, I beg you…

Sometimes when you have a great you will not agree with every move but he is hands down a great skipper. He motivates his guys like most managers wish they could. If you want to bark about his decisions over the years so be it, I can do it too. But you can’t question his passion to win. He is a staple for this team and his guys love playing for him. When was the last time you had a guy leave this city and speak poorly of Cox? I honestly can’t remember one.

Thanks you for all of the work you’ve done for this team and the city of Atlanta, and in a perfect world you’d have more than a year or two left in you Coach.

Time for Bobby to retire. He is a pitcher’s worst nightmare. He’ll leave a pitcher in the game for forever after giving up 5 runs in the first inning but won’t give a pitcher an opportunity for a complete game no matter how well he is pitching and with a sizeable lead.

I can now sleep a little easier at night knowing that I get at least one more season watching one of the greatest baseball managers and leaders of all time lead the Braves.

Only in Atlanta would such a silly question even be asked.

Any other town with intelligent sports fans wouldn’t even have to ask if we are all happy to have Bobby back.

Watching the Mets implode with all their talent should give us all a clue as to how important a great leader is.

The Braves have the best in baseball.

Quite franly, it’s insulting to a future hall of fame manager that it would be need to be asked if the fans are happy he’s coming back. Any other organization would give top dollar to steal him from us.

He’ll never retire, he’ll die in that dugout, God willing.

Sounds like Cox is following the Joe Paterno / Bobby Bowden retirement plan. You know the one: the geezer coach accumulates statistical greatness regardless of whether it’s good for the team. Personally I worry that he’ll die trying to break the record for using the “f” word in a single game. The Braves are headed for a .500 year, it’s time for a change of the guard.
