Post-game forum: Sweet sweep?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Braves beat Johan Santana and the Mets 4-2 on Thursday night and swept the four-game series at Turner Field.
The Mets are staggering, with speculation continuing that manager Willie Randolph might lose his job soon. Meanwhile, the Braves are five games over .500 for the first time this season.
How sweet was the sweep? What was the key or keys?
Are the Braves shaping up nicely and how do you see the season playing out?

what a great series. this team has really started to turn it around by getting kelly johnson moved out of the leadoff spot to a much more suitable spot for him in the order. kelly’s a good hitter but not a leadoff hitter. he needs to be in a spot to hit with runners on and drive them in. also, we now have our BIG centerfield upgrade from last year at the top of the order. i loved andruw but kotsay is a much better professional hitter. gotta get some pitchers healthy to keep this up.

Nice to win at home, but hardly a reason to get giddy. Let’s just be happy we took care of biz & not get carried away…

GREAT sweep! great play from the likes of kotsay, omar infante, and our “patchwork” bullpen to compliment chipper, b-mac and tex. I could not be happier with the patience, and maturity (not throwing back at mets hitters, just out hitting them). Team cohesion goes a LONG way and it seems like no matter how many injuries we get…we will always play like a team and that is what will get us back into the postseason…GO BRAVES

This team is ROLLIN’ right now, and they are really fun to watch. Moving Kelly down is really paying off and I love Kotsay in the 2 hole as well. Big Tex is HOT right now and seeing the ball really well. The pitching is looking the best it has in 3 years if you ask me, and it’s because of the added depth we have this year.
You have to give credit where it is certainly due. Frank Wren has done an outstanding job since taking over JS’s job. He’s made some moves that have payed off BIG for us so far. He’s brought in Jurrjens, Kotsay, Norton, Infante and Ohman and they have been huge for us this year. The bench hasn’t looked this good in a couple of years and the bullpen is darn-near lights out every game.
Keep it up guys…

I love it. I always felt as though Randolph was not that great of a manager. Guess it proves that you can pay great players to play, but you can’t pay them to play “TOGETHER”. Go Braves, keep it going against the D-Backs.

Yes the season is shaping up nicely, and imagine how much better they will be when the injured return. Mr. Wren has done a fantastic job of filling the gaps in pitchers and in getting a much stronger bench. That putrid bench last year with Woodward, Harris et al, along with the bullpen that was unable to get my 83 year old mother out, made those Braves hard to watch.
They have gone out and filled in the spaces that needed filling. The injury bugs should have done most of the biting that they have done for this year. So let’s get the DL guys back and put some distance between the Braves and the others, ‘specially the Mutts.

Great series! Lotta guys pickin’ each other up. My “key to the game?” Huddy laying down that bunt with two strikes. Kudos to Bobby for staying with Huddy in a crucial spot. Tough task ahead (Backs) but, I think we’re up for it. Let’s go get ‘em!

The Mets falling apart at Turner Field is nothing to get excited about. Happens almost every time, reflects more on the Mets than the Braves.

The series was GREAT!!! However, I dont feel like hearing you all whine this weekend if we lose 3 out of 4 against Arizona. I know the Marlins have handed it to the D-Backs but Arizona is too good of a team to keep losing. They will probably take it out on the Braves. Hopefully Im wrong but for the past 8 years the D-Backs have kind of owned us. So if we drop the first 2 games everyone please dont go into panic mode.

Always nice to sweep the mets… and silence that ‘jose, jose, jose’ crap in the stands. with Church’s two stand-up slides (causing the injury to Escobar), four hit batsmen, and that pitch thrown at Hudson’s head, wonder if the league office will discipline any of the mets organization? Or does mlb sit back and let them play ugly all the way to the cellar?

Granted, the D-Backs have had our # for the past few years but, ‘tis time to turn that around. The Backs are a much better team than the mutts of course. I’ll be plenty happy with a split. I see us taking 3 of 4 though.

what a game! that was one of the most fun to watch games I’ve seen in a while. Great pitching by Huddy! To me, the most impressive thing is that it was a late inning come from behind win. I haven’t seen the braves do that very often this year, so it was nice to see some clutch hits. Almost every game, I have to notice what a great job FW did of letting Andruw go (though I hated to see it) and picking up Kotsay. A HUGE upgrade for us at such a cheaper price. Getting JJJ and letting Escobar play short was another brilliant move. We haven’t lost anything at short or in the lineup and yet we gained a very talented pitcher. Good to see the braves getting some young arms since next year we will probably be without Glavine and Smoltz. Hudson and JJJ will be a great one-two punch. Now if Wren can just work his magic and get another reliable starter, we should be in business for a while.

with the d-backs coming up, remember owings game here last year? it hurt to see the braves get smoked by a pitcher, but an astounding effort from a guy who could be a tremendous everyday player (too bad, Broke Ankiel).

a final thought… how rich will the hall of fame class be from the retirees this year? Clemens, Randy Johnson, Pedro, Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux, Frank Thomas, and who knows who else. Half a dozen (or more) first-ballot guys… wow.

Sweeeeeeeeeet!
But now we have to beat the DBacks (they’re not the Mets). And then we hit the road and have to play good baseball.
I liked what Hudson said both before and after tonight’s game. Here’s what he said:
Before the game: “Nobody is unbeatable,” Hudson explained. “Obviously, he’s going to have a pretty good chance to win when he goes out there, but we beat him once already.” (on facing Johan Santana)
Now that’s TWICE this year (and we’re not going to mention he struck out only 1 batter tonight and allowed a career-high 12 hits)
After the game: “I can’t believe he did it — he never does anything against those guys,” (referring to Jones’ big hit against tonight)
If you look at the gallery here at AJC about the death of that young man, you’re going to see that a construction worker at the stadium died while working for the Atlanta Olympics (third photo of the gallery), and that was… 13 years and 1 day before Mr Hayes fell down. How weird is that? Our condolences to his relatives and friends.

Thank you BRAVES for making that an absolute sensational 4 games (oh yea and also spankin the A’s too). Chipper(I call him HOSS)was totally right—THAT WUZ FUN.
I’ve been reading some of the MUTTS blogs in NY papers. They are really pizzed off. Serves em right.
I disagree with yall on here saying the D BACKS r gonna eat us for lunch. THIS BRAVES TEAM IS ON FIRE!!!! Now boys — lets go skin some snakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. I also want to send my deepest sympathies to the family of the boy who passed away from falling at the ballpark. It is truly awful. Just take some peace in knowing he is now in Heaven and happy to be in GOD’s hands. He left this world having fun and being himself. The Braves have another ANGEL keeping an eye on them and all of his family and friends as well. Prayers to the family / friends of this young man.

I’m “slightly” concerned about the D Backs series because they did get swept by the Marlins and will probably be p**. However, the thing about the Diamondbacks is that if you look at their splits, they are absolutely taking advantage of the putrid NL West and are very mediocre against the other 2 divisions so I think the way we are playing we’ll be able to get a split a hopefully take 3 out of 4! Go Braves!

Great that the Braves are winning, especially good to sweep the Mets.
However the incoming Dbacks are a better team, and therefore they’re a more reliable indicator of how good this team can be.

Great series Bravos! Nothing better than sweeping the Mets and their obnoxious fans! I cant belive we won last night because all the Mets fans that come on our blog popping off at the mouth said Johan Santana was the second coming of Cy Young and was beyond a shadow of a doubt unbeatable. JOWHO? LOL! LOL! Tuck tail and go home little fellas! LOL! LOL! LOL!

This lineup that we got now, should be the one Bobby stays with, it is working very well. Tex picked a perfect time to get hot. Now if Frenchy can get on fire, I would hate to see just how nasty this lineup really could be if everyone was on the same page.
As for this bullpen, I truly believe it has not even been recognized for the outstanding job it has done. It seem every night, one of those guys are stepping and getting the job done. Last night, it was Acosta holding and Ohman saving the game for Huddy. Imagine what this bullpen is going to be like when you get Soriano, Gonzo and Smoltz in it, if I am the opposing hitter, I wouldn’t want to face any one of them.
Who would have expected the starting pitching performances we received out of the likes of Glavine, Campillo, JJ and Huddy? Each of them went more than 5 innings, giving our bullpen some good rest and using fewer arms. Campillo really shocked me, striking out 7 Mutts and walking 0 in only 2nd career start. What can you say about JJ? Wren stole him from the Tigers is all I can say. I bet the Tigers wish they had him back. The bookends were our vets, Glavine and Huddy, they got the job done too.
A very nice job, sweeping the Mutt and we are 1 1/2 out of 1st place and 5 games over .500. I call that a nice 3 days in my book.

The record is about where it should be considering the starting pitching concerns. JJ and Hudson have been great, and Glavine is starting to pitch like Glavine. The great-at-home, terrible-on-the-road has got to even out somewhat on both ends. Now that Tex is starting to hit, the scoring should continue to be strong. I think 90-93 wins for the season is realistic. Hopefully that will be good enough to make the post-season.

Sweep Sweeeep Sweeeep
We have the best bench players. Pitching looking good. Hitters are getting hot. Bullpen has been awesome. Coming to June 1, who knows-we might be the World Series contender. If we get one solid starter, we are the best all around. Got to sign Tex, Kotsay. If Tex leaves Atlanta, Braves will be Mets version of 2008 next year. Go Braves!

LET’S ANALYZE THE STARTING PITCHING FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON.
With Smoltz, Soriano, and Gonzo all due back soon, I can’t imagine our bullpen not being one of MLB’s strongest and deepest.
To be serious contenders, I feel we still need another quality and consistent starter. In a playoff series it is extremely important that the 1-2 starters are very strong. Smoltz and Hudson would have fit this bill. I’m not sure Jurgens will be ready for the #2 spot in a playoff senario and I’m not sure Glavine’s good enough. These two would be fine for the 3rd starter, 4th (if needed), and long relief.
So, who are some of the pitchers we could possibly pick up through a trade when some teams begin to fade?

As a diehard Mets fan living in Atlanta I feel compelled to once again tell you guys really played well this week. I went to the first game and as always the Braves fans were great. It is always good to see fans of different teams giving their perspective. I get the Mets on Direct TV and I can tell you that we have looked like this for a long time. It is not fun in Mets land right now but there are 115 games left. Between our new stadium being a monument to another team (the Dodgers) and having a group of players who seem to care very little about the team, it is frustrating. It is clear that the Braves continue to be a model on how it is supposed to be done. The bright side for us is that we have a long way to go and we do have some special talent. It also seems like the Braves save their very best for us. We have a great fan base and we always turn out in Atlanta as we did this week. I think we deserve better. Good luck.

Hey all,
I’m a diehard Mets fan living in NY…have been my whole life, and have hated the Braves my whole life. Still do, always will. HOWEVER, as you all know…it is chaos up here. The team, the locker room, the management, GM, front office. It’s pure chaos and heads are soon to roll. For the first time I can say…this Mets team is completely unwatchable. Glass jaws, they dont fight, they dont try, they don’t care outside of a few players. Bunch of overpaid lazy latino players put together by Minaya.
Watching this series, was eye opening because it was refreshing to see GOOD baseball…by the Braves. As it kills me to admit, the Braves should be 20 games over the way they looked this weekend. They hustle, they hit in the clutch, the make all the big plays in the field and they seem to have chemistry. Everything the Mets had in 2006, and no longer have any of. Your team is solid, thats for sure.
This Mets team is in a free fall and I actually despise 90% of the roster…sadly. Church, Wright, Wagner, and Schneider are the only players I commend. They want to win. The rest are collecting a paycheck.
Good series by the Braves, reminds me how solid ball is supposed to look. Everyone in NY is calling for Randolph’s head…hoping it happens very soon. The team needs a serious kick in the a$$.
