Chipper’s spectacular offensive run

In the words of Braves’ manager Bobby Cox, the offensive performance of veteran Chipper Jones this season has been “pretty spectacular”.

Braves beat writer David O’Brien detailed the impressive numbers Jones has compiled in a recent notebook item on the third baseman (see item here). Jones had a home run and double in Wednesday’s victory over the Phillies, raising his batting average to .418.

What do you think about Chipper’s hot start? Do you remember the veteran ever having a successful stretch like this, including during his NL MVP season of 1999?

Let us know what you think. Also, read Chop Chick to find out about Chipper’s involvement in an unusual charity effort and click here for complete Braves coverage.

I said at the beginning of the year, Chipper was headed for a MVP year. He has a different attitude and approach to the game. I like it and it shows on the field. Let’s just hope he can keep it up, he’s carrying the Braves right now, and hope he doesn’t come up injured. Good Luck Chipper and Go Braves! War Eagle

He’s locked in and has been for 2 years. Shame nobody (nationally) noticed until now. I liken what Chipper is doing to what Barry Bonds was a few years ago. Obviously not with the HR hitting. But with the patience and complete owning of the strike zone. Bonds didn’t swing at bad pitches. As a result he was able to wait for those perfect pitches that HE wanted to hit. Chipper’s approach is similar. He is in control, never the pitcher. The difference is that Chipper isn’t getting walked like Bonds and Chipper puts more balls in play and not as many over the fence. But its very similar in it almost is like that kid in high school who just towered over the other kids talent wise. He’s sticking out in a major way.

Keep it up U Kno Who!!!

You Know Who is in a zone. You can’t expect anyone to go all season like this but making it a 1/4 of the way is impressive. I can’t wait til next week to see Chipper pound some Met pitching.

Chase Utley gets Player of the Month for April? Yet another award not delivered to the proper recipient. Lance Berkman will probably get it for May. He’s hitting like crazy too. Chipper deserves it more though.

Braves are #1 in NL in Team ERA and Opponents BA. Who says the pitching is suffering? It’s beginning to look like timely clutch hitting is the problem but that will balance out hopefully.

GO CHUCKIE! GO BRAVES!!!

I have been a Chipper fan since we brought him up oh so long ago. He is the cosumate professional ball player. He is overlooked because the national media is tired of the Braves. They can’t ignore him anymore and I am loving him getting the attention se deserves. I hope he keeps it up and get help like he did last night. We are still sukcing from the 6th inning on, but if we get 8 in 5 innings every night we should win a few. Go Braves!

It seems Chipper has benefited from having Tex in the lineup after him— Chipper getting better pitches perhaps. What would be the outcome if we switched it around— Tex 3rd, Chipper 4th? Tex is hitting so poorly, maybe he needs someone better hitting behind him?

Now maybe the rest of the baseball/sports world will realize what Braves fans have known for a long, long time - Chipper is one awesome player! He’s criminally underrated and ignored when it comes time for awards and recognition. It’s about time everyone gave him the credit he deserves!!

Chipper is the man, ITA with the above poster- I love him to get the attention, just wish it was coming from someone else instead of Sports Illustrated, we don’t need a jinx.

I love the braves and have for 30 years. I honestly think it is time to start over. Imagine what the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels would give up for a healthy corner infielder who is batting .350 with 35hr’s come late July. It could be a package similar to the Herschel Walker trade, and we all know how that turned out for Dallas. They would sacrifice their future for proven starter/closer,if he were healty.

Chipper may need to drive in 8 tonight with Chuck spinning his frisbees up to home plate.

Chipper has been a different player since we got Tex and since Smoltz told him to “man up” and play through the minor pains last season rather than sitting out everytime he bruised something. Give Smoltz some credit.

Chipper is the best. He should be a 1st ballot hall of famer. If he keeps this up, the MVP is his to loose.

Chipper needs McCann hitting behind him! Its time to bench Tex for a little while.. or let him bat eighth.

How about enjoying it and leaving the analyzing to history!!!

He’s in great company as a switch hitter the Mick and Eddie Murray!!!

He is the MVP so far—-where would the braves be w/o him?

Chipper has always been pretty consistant, but never like this. It’s incredible to think that we are in mid-May and he’s hitting .418. Chipper is headed for the MVP if he can stay healthy this year. I know everybody has already conceded that Chase Utley is the MVP, but he’s going to have to go through Chipper to get it. I can’t wait to see him come to the plate, he’s so much fun to watch right now.

If Chipper played in NY or LA, he would be recognized as one of the top 5 players in the game today. Everyone in ATL already knows he has always been one of the best and most consistant hitters in baseball. He hits for power and avg, and is probably the best situational hitter since Ted Willaims. I would rank him right up there with George Brett as far as apure hitter, omly difference is Chipper has more power. The years he spent in the outfiled were tough on his body and affected his numbers because of injuries and game missed. I think if he has stayed on 3b he would be appraching 500 hrs instead of 400. Now that he’s healthy, he’s going to put up big numbers the next 5 years.

The Yankees can have A-Rod, I’ll take CHIPPER.

Chipper might be declining physically as everyone does after the age of 30. But he has compensated for it becoming a more patient and smarter hitter. He seems to be seeing the ball and taking good swings more now than at anytime of his career.

My only worry about Chipper is injuries and what happens to the Braves if he goes down for an extended time this season.

Chipper is playing the best baseball of his “Hall of Fame’ career. At his age he may need too take a day off now and then. Has any one thought of moving McCann to first. I think Mark is an excellant player.(Can we afford him next year?)McCaan is a great hitter not catcher) We need pitching to stay competitive in years to come. I think McCann’s career will last longer at first.(Catching will continue to keep him banged up.)
