Should Garnett be suspended?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Editor’s Note: Commenting on this blog has been turned off. To continue this conversation, click here and join the Tuesday morning blog.
The Hawks-Celtics series, expected by most fans to be a yawner, has gotten interesting in more ways than one. Not only did the Hawks tie it up Monday night, but the jawing and scuffling intensified as well.
Hawks big man Zaza Pachulia and Celtics star Kevin Garnett got into it before halftime, leading to a scrum that produced four technical fouls but no ejections. The incident may not be over, however.
League officials are reviewing whether Garnett threw an elbow at referee Eddie F. Rush, which could lead to a suspension. They’re also looking at whether Hawks forward Marvin Williams and Celtics forward Kendrick Perkins left their benches and stepped on the court during the dustup, a violation of league rules.
What do you think? Did Garnett throw an elbow at the ref? Should he be suspended? And are the Hawks getting into the Celtics’ heads?

That picture pretty much says it all. Garnett grabbed him and shoved him. If the NBA doesn’t suspend him what will happen the next time something like this happens? They cannot allow the players to put their hands on the refs or things will get messy real quick.

Yes, Garnett did and should be suspended. I wouldn’t say that the Hawks are in the Celtics head but more so they are starting to believe that they can beat this team in a best of 7. Let these guys continue to run and keep the level of intensity high. We should not be intimidated as some should suggest by the big 3. They should continue to get in these guys faces. The Celtics are not unbeatable and I think the Hawks have exposed them for what they are, an aging team comprised of superstar egos that didn’t believe that a no name team as idiot Charles Barkley calls us; had a chance of beating them. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!

No. No one should be suspended…it was a heat of the moment thing. Nobody came off the bench to the point of involvement and Garnett did not purposely strike the ref. I did love Zaza with the forehead move though. Don’t back down Hawks—you are definitely in their craniums!!!!

I didn’t see Garnett throw an elbow at any ref. Looked like Pachulia had his hand on Garnett’s shoulder, Garnett shook it off by raising his arm, Pachulia went ballistic and got right in Garnett’s face (literally….looked like they were kissing), Garnett didn’t respond. Case closed.

The league doesn’t want to do to a team what they did to PHX last year in playoffs. But… a player, any player, elbowing a ref… they have to suspend him. But I imagine Marvin will be as well for leaving bench. Not necessarily to even it out because we all know Garnett is more valuable but both will lose starters and our bench is not deep as theirs.
The biggest question is can Hawks ride mo to a victory on Parque floor? We won a game five there in 87 (or was it 88?) but then lost 6 at home and 7 in one of the greatest games ever - Bird vs Nique.

I am suprised at the Hawks for not giving into to the mighty Celtics. I am proud of the effort that they have put forth, they have great players but it makes you think of the year they would have had if they had believed in themselves and could have put that much effort in the entire year. I hope the Hawks continue and beat the Celtics because they came in thinking that they were better and the Hawks should just lay down and die.

the NBA can’t NOT suspend him, yet somehow I think they might not because he is Garnett and Boston is Boston
the league will have NO credibility ever again it does not suspend Garnett. It’s not complicated. He SHOVED a ref. Under normal circumstances in normal sports leagues, the Celtics should be happy with ONE game. It should be even more.

PUHLEEZE take marvin williams out the starting lineup, Everytime he drives tot he basket he misses a easy lay up, turn the ball over, or gets an offensive foul called on him,, The only thing he can do is hit a 15 footer from time to time, he has no inside game, not a good defensive player, and for the life of him can not hold on to the ball, get him out of there get him out of the starting lineup

It is true that the NBA, beat writers, and sponsors are salivating about a Lakers/Celtics finals.
Pushing a ref should, like leaving the bench, get a suspension, heat of the moment or not. Them’s the rules. We’ll see if the NBA is about $ or integrity when the answer or non-answer is given.

I’m not fantasizing about Garnett getting suspended for standing there calmly while Zaza head-butted him and got in his face. I AM, however, fantasizing that the refs will continue to call the games the way they did during the past two. Last night: Hawks 33 foul shots. Celtics 18 foul shots. Rondo, Powe, Garnett, Pierce…hit hard…no call. Yes!

garnet first threw the elbow at Petulia, then they went head to head. garnett then forearmed referee Ed Rush to free himself from the refs hold.
a minimum one if not 2 game suspension(one for each separate infraction) must be imposed.

Yes, KG should be suspended for the rest of the series. No way can you touch a ref and get away with it. The NBA better step up and show to the fans that they do not favor anyone or any team and that they do not tolerate these types of actions.
In addition, the NBA should suspend Kendrick Perkins for stepping onto the court. That man looked like he was ready to get into the battle. The NBA needs to stay consistent with its ruling from last year. If they suspended Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw, then they must suspend Perkins.
The NBA also needs to suspend Paul Pierce for flashing that gang symbol at the Hawks bench. What kind of message does that send to the fans? What kind of role model is Paul Pierce? The NBA has enough image problems already.
Finally, Sam Cassell should be suspended for assaulting Joe Johnson. Joe could have gotten hurt out there.

Was at the game, it was not as bad as it looked on the highlights when I looked at it on T.V this morning. As a matter of fact it was over pretty fast. It took longer to get the fouls sorted out than the actual situation. Then the players went back playing good, intense basketball. It was a very good game, can’t wait for next Tuesday.

I believe from viewing the footage that Kevin Garnett did indeed throw an elbow at the ref. Now should he get suspended for this violation???? HELL YES! This will set an example to the rest of the league… control your temper or you don’t play.. simple as that.
But this is likely not going to be the outcome of the investigation. Its the playoffs and we all know that the Celtics are keyed in to win the entire prize this year.
IMO, the NBA is starting to become more and more scripted each year…. Like a poorly orchestrated play. This year, the Celtics have become the team to beat in the East and are scripted to be the 2008 champions. (And mark my words, this is likely to happen. Not because the Celtics are a great team, because they really are, its just the fact that sports are no longer about “real competition”.) Its now all about which owner is sucking up the most to the commish and which mafia (not all italian) “family” has the most money invested into certain teams winning so that they can craft wins and losses to keep thier illegal gambling ring on going……
Yep thats right, I said it. If I were lying, then half of these “thugs” would not be playing in the NBA. (I mean afterall, isn’t it strange that the the league has a “No Tolerance” policy, but keeps hiring players that are seriously troublesome?) If I were lying, then Isaih Thomas would not have been hired on as the GM of the Knicks and thus destroying one of the last symbols of the game of Basketball. Not to mention that, the Dallas Mavericks owner would not be allow to own their team as he is a complete attention w*******.
Kevin will probably be fined a awfully low amount in comparison to his salary and then all this will be brushed under the table once the Celtics have defeated the Hawks.

Come on people, nobody will be suspended. First, what Garnett did happens semi-regularly and never warrants a suspension, nor should it.
As to Williams and Perkins, neither will get suspended. Everyone is saying “oh, they stepped on the court” as if stepping on the court is what draws a suspension…it is not. Check transcripts from what Stern and Stu Jackson said last year re: the Stoudemire incident and it is clear that the requirement is “leaving the vicinity of the bench area.” In one interview, the interviewer then asks “well, he only took a step or two, that’s not leaving the bench area is it?” Stern clarifies that Stoudemire walked 20-25 feet away from the bench, and that was why he was suspended. Since Wiliams and Perkins took only 1-2 steps on the court, they did not leave the “vicinity of the bench” and will not get suspended.

“Them Kids Can Play!” The Hawks have been a great home team all year. The Lakers, Phoenix, Dallas, and a bunch of other teams know that ‘The Sea of Red” is a tough place and you just might get bloodied. There’s no quit in the ATL.
And their are three big time players in Atlanta: Johnson J-Smooth, and Al ‘The Monster” Horford. With Pachulia as the enforcer… just ask Garnett. WELCOME TO THE ATL!!!

The Hawks are beating the Celtics with KG - if NBA suspends him every loud mouth Boston fan will start whining and complaining that the league took it from them. The Celts are already crybabying about the shot clock malfunction (Note to Philips Arena staff - when you are named after a company that makes clocks and clock radios you should be able to have a better timing device, there isn’t an old Omni shot clock lying around) More importantly, who was the blonde sitting at the scorer’s table behind Doc Rivers. Her secret weapons obviously distracted the Celtics from their game :)

Don’t suspend Garnett, Zaza, Perkins or Marvin, but DO SUSPEND Cassell. He deliberatly went after JJ when JJ was trying to calm down Zaza. Cassell tried to go after JJ to get him thrown out. KG didn’t do anything. I’ve consulted with Mike Tyson this morning about it and we both agree that suspending KG would be LUDACRIS haha. Come on, folks, you don’t cheapen the series by suspending KG over something this trivial, which it was. Big Z brought the forehead into play and KG played it pretty cool in my book. No suspensions anywhere. Now, Pierce flashes a Blood gang symbol, the symbol for ‘Blood Killer’ at Al Horford and all he gets is a $25,000.00 fine? That I do have opposition with. That’s a place the league doesn’t want to go, and that would warrant a suspension in my book. Danny Ainge says he does it before every game and so that makes it alright? No Danny, that simply means he flashed “Blood Killer” every night before games and you choose to overlook it. Shame on you sir. Set a precedent and stop allowing players to glorify criminal lifestyles and behavior.

Well I know bulshat when I see it! It was a great game, full of intensity, 1 or 2 flare ups but that’s what expected in any playoff scenario. In baseball, they throw a ball at your head @ 90mph, the dugouts empty & fight but NEVER is the word ‘thug’ used. In hockey, they have no teeth & fight in almost EVERY game but again, “it’s the way the game is played.” Whatever, folks….spin it how you want. Again, if you don’t like NBA action - DON’T WATCH!!

Can’t comment on any suspension, I didn’t see it close enough to see if he threw an elbow or not (would have been nice to have a link so we could however).
I’m 100% behind the Hawks, moreso than at the start of the series now that they have showed some character and deserve (and will undoubtedly get) another loud sellout crowd. I can’t wait to get to Philips Friday.
I don’t agree, however, with the statements above saying how the refs are in the Celtics back pocket. Gheez folks, one of the main reasons we won last night was because the Celtics got in early foul trouble with 3 starters getting 2 in the first quarter. Even more pointedly, we have shot more free throws in EVERY GAME so far. That doesn’t sound like the refs are favoring Boston to me.
Come on people - pick your points, don’t say stupid things that are obviously (and factually) incorrect. Concentrate on the fact that the Celtics are acting like thugs and the Hawks are standing up to them and refusing to bow down. These guys are showing more heart than any Atlanta team has in years, don’t tarnish it by making stuff up - tell it like it is, there are plenty of facts to concentrate on without making excuses (refs are on Boston’s side) when none need to be made!
