Believe it: Hawks are headed to the playoffs

The Atlanta Hawks are headed to the playoffs, ending the longest postseason drought in the NBA.

The Hawks clinched the 8th seed with Indiana’s loss at Washington Monday, earning their first trip to the playoffs since 1999.

They will face the Boston Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

How many of you believed in this team for the beginning? (Yeah, right.) How many of you are utterly shocked?

How many of you think coach Mike Woodson is the biggest reason the Hawks are headed to the playoffs? Our guess is you don’t think so, but if not Woody, who then? Joe? Bibby? The Joshs?

Regardless, who’s behind your playoff-bound Atlanta Hawks?

The playoff schedule will be released Wednesday night.

But hell no Mike Woodson is not the reason they made the playoffs. As it stands now, they backed into the playoffs. They are in despite of him.

The Hawks are in the playoffs for 2 reasons…Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson…their leadership, plus the outstanding performances by Al ‘ROY’ Horford and Josh Smith have really guided this team the last month or so.

Now all they need is a REAL coach.

I think mike woodson has done ok as coach. Billy Knight is an idiot though with questionable picks and the speedy claxton thing will hurt us in the coming yrs. They wil be put out early but at least we can say they made it.

We match up well with Boston. I’m not saying we are going to beat them. But we could give them more of a run for their money than anyone expects.

Regardless of the outcome, it’s time for Woodson and Billy to go.

Congratulations Hawks! But Mike Woodson is the reason we are seeded 8th and not 5th. Anyone who watched the Celtics game saw our guys run out of gas when just a few minutes 2nd half rest would have helped them finish. They BEAT the Celtics and they know it, but Mike has failed to use and cultivate his bench. Sam Cassell just fed of our guys being out of gas and all our shots fell short from fatigue. The Hawks won, Mike lost and that’s what will happen in the playoffs. He has got to go, he is not a head coach.

By basketball jones

Who cares? They will not win a game against the Celtics for an early exit. One more lottery draft would have better served this young, inexperienced and talented team.

By JB

April 14, 2008 9:57 PM | Link to this

Does it matter that they made the playoffs. If they’re LUCKY, they’ll win ONE game but it’s more than likely going to be a quick, painful sweep. The Hawks are 6 games below .500. Making the playoffs in the Eastern Conference is nothing be proud of when you’re 6 below .500, 13 games behind your division leader (Orlando), and 27 games behind the conference leader. The Hawks have a long way to go before celebrating a playoff berth.

The Hawks have little to be proud of entering the playoffs with a losing record is not an accomplishment, but a reflection of how bad the east conference really is. The lowest western conference playoff team will win 50 games. Changes among the GM and coach must be strongly considered as the neucleus for a good team is intact. The draft picks have been lukewarm overall. some have panned out, some have not, the worst picks were those that have not been made. scouting talent and getting the most from it has not been the mark of this franchise. There’s nothing bright about the Hawks GM or coach. It’s time to make a move. Celts SWEEP.

I think, and as the rest of the NBA knows, this team is one of the best teams in the NBA. This year was virtually a 50(close losses, etc.)win season. Too bad they face the Celtics. Atlanta, however, even if they lose, has shown great mettle. When they put their minds and their games to it, they can rock just about anyone. They played the “H” out of the Celtics. It won’t be long until they dominate. I’m a great fan of Domimique. It’s almost like the Hawks are a team of Dominiques. Plus Mike Bibby. It’s been a long time coming. Mookie, Steve Smith, etc. got as good as they could get. With these Hawks, it’s just the beginning.

I have NBA league Pass and watched the wizards beat the Pacers without Karon Butler and Gilbert Arenas both sat out resting. I feel this now will give Woody a chance to play his bench heavy the next couple of nights and give the starters some much needed rest and maybe help the bench gain some confidence through some extended time on the floor the next two nights. I am excited for the hawks and already have my playoff tickets. I do not care about how we got there I am just glad that we are there. I am so proud of these young guys for standing through the adversity of the ownership, not knowing whether their coach would be fired or not or whether their GM BK would be back it shows the maturity and the character, and chemistry that this team is beginning to build as a group. I said at the beginning of the season I would be satisfied with the Hawks winning between 38-42 games and make the playoffs, because those were realistic goals for such a young team, and they have accomplished that. Mike Bibby would be the one piece that has helped the hawks get over the hump and into the playoffs. What happens in the off-season we will deal with then, but right now I can not wait to get to the arena and cheer on the HIGH FLYING HAWKS!!! PLEASE NO MORE NEGATIVE ENERGY. THIS IS WHY THIS CITY SPORTS FRACHISES CAN NOT PROGRESS IN A TIMELY MANNER, BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE TO BUSY LOOKING AT THE NEGATIVE AND NOT THE POSITIVE.

I am proud of these Hawks, MY HAWKS!!!! I believed from the begining that they were a good team and that they were going to get better, and they have. I believed before we got Mike Bibby and when we got him that just made me believed it even more.

I think the way we are playing is due to a combination of everyone jelling together and buyying into the way coach Woodson coaches. I think its more of the players jelling and understanding how each other play than coach woodson. Josh has emerged as an emotional leader and is really a BEAST, Joe is being Joe, Al is completely dominating the boards, Mike is droping big shot after big shot, and Chills is being used very effectively. I just wished more of our bench would get some time to get some experience. I think we’ll compete and give Boston a run for their money. Go HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we need a backup pointguard and a bench. if we can just get a little help from the bench and josh smith takes the ball to the rack we can beat the celtics

Anybody besides me think that the Hawks still underachieved? Looking at the team on paper, I think they have more talent than Philadelphia, Toronto, and Washington. Hey JB sure they have a looooonnnggg way to go to celebrate a playoff berth. As a matter of fact I think they are celebrating right now. Dumb*ss!

The Hawks won’t have another first round pick this year and even if they do get swept by the Celtics it’s important for the team’s young up and comers to learn how to be in playoff basketball situations. Gotta crawl before you can walk.

Besides, for all of those punks crying about the Hawks record, come Saturday EVERYBODY’S 0-0!

2 Years ago I was telling people that last year they would win 30+ games and be out of the playoffs with less than a month to go. I was a little off, but they won 30 games.

I said the year after that (2008) they would win 40 games and make it to the playoffs. Still have a chance! The question is where do they go from here?

By The King

Can you say “Hallelujah”? I don’t care if the Hawks locked in a playoff spot on an Indiana loss or not. They’ve had a very nice run to end the season and have had plenty of opportunities to fold and they haven’t. Bibby has really helped bring them to a new level, by hitting clutch shots, distributing the ball well, and giving Joe Johnson more room to operate (teams can’t send all their guys at Joe in crunch time). We’ve got Josh Smith, an emerging star (if he can keep from falling in love with that outside jumpshot), Al Horford, who has had a simply outstanding rookie season (imagine if we had a true center and Al could play power forward…WOW), Josh Childress, who has really come a long way and can really cause big problems for other teams when he crashes the offensive boards (along with other amazing feats). Marvin seems to take two steps forward and one back, but he’s showing signs of taking steps forward, so if he can take a couple of steps forward now, watch out! Gotta give Zaza some more playing time. He plays much better when he gets some game time….and lately he’s been passing the ball out when he gets an offensive rebound, rather than forcing it. Hopefully Woodson can give some of the bench a little playing time in these last two meaningless games…they really need it, plus the starters need the rest. Well, the hawks showed that they can give the Celtics a run for their money, so maybe they can win a game or two in the series. Go Hawks!

Does anyone else see Marvin Williams as the obvious weak link in our starting five?

Bibby, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Horford can all play with ANYBODY…

Marvin can’t do much of anything not a great rebounder, can’t post up, never drives to the rim, all he ever does is shoot mid-range jumpshots which he misses half the time…

What we need is a legit. center so we can bump Horford to power forward where he would get 18 and 10 EVERY night and Marvin Williams gets bumped onto the bench…

Hey guys,

Congrats from a Wizards fan!

I remember when the Wizards had a longggggg playoff drought too, and the great feeling a couple years back when we finally made it.

Forget about getting in with a losing record. Who cares? You’re in now, and that’s what matters. It’s an exhilarating experience no matter what, and what’s important is that now you’re getting invaluable playoff experience not just for your players, but for your whole ORGANIZATION.

If I remember correctly, Orlando sneaked into the 8th spot last year with a 40-42 record (if you guys win out, you’ll have a 39-43 record). Orlando got swept in the first round last year, but that gave them a taste of the playoffs again, and the front office went out and got a great coach and made some moves. Now, they’re the 3 seed in the East.

So, SCREW the haters. Your future is finally going in the right direction.

In my book Mike Woods gets no credit for any of this. He has no clue about coaching basketball and yet the upper management keeps him as the head coach. I’m glad Joe Joe and Bibby stepped up and put this team on there back and made the playoffs. I think the Hawks match up well with Boston neither teams have true centers So this should be a great series to watch. hopefully the Hawks want need Woodson to coach much during the playoffs if that happens then they will be in for a long night.GOOD LUCKS HAWKS!!!!

When you get in the playoffs by one or two games, it makes those big wins over Dallas, Phoenix and the Lakers earlier in the season even that much bigger. Wow. Every win truly counts. I can’t believe my Hawks are going to be on national TV for multiple games.

Our playoff seeding next year, building upon the experience of being under the bright lights against essentially the #1 seed in the NBA, hinges on Woodson’s return (or hopeful exit). I know we’ll be stronger next year if we can get a new coach.

Wow. Hawks are in the playoffs. Good times, indeed!

The good news/bad news about making the playoffs is that “management” might actually think this is a step forward and retain the GM/Coach. In actuality they should have at a minimum 45 wins right now and be a 5 or 6 seed. Woodson is a horrible coach. perfect example is the loss the Boston. 4th quarter offense becomes throw it to Joe (where is Bibby) and watch him post up. Cassell goes off for 15. He’s the only one touching the ball and no Hawk is in his face or there to double him. It’s a coaches job to find an answer!

If a bear is chasing a friend of mine and I, I only have to be faster than him in order for me not to be eaten. The Hawks only had to be better than the Pacers/Nets, etc. to get in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They have a better record, they are in, and now it’s time to see if they can win a game or two. Go Hawks!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to the players for great late effort( after Bibby) got here. The Owners need to* Fire Coach and GM when play-off is over and get a proven Leader for both jobs.*Thats the only way they will continue to improve. Nothing to lose now, Go for it!

The biggest reason the Hawks made the playoffs is not because of Coach Mike Woodson, or any of the players for that matter. The main reason they are in the playoffs is because the Hawks are fortunate enough to be playing in a very weak Eastern Conference. The Golden State Warriors who will miss the playoffs in the West would have homecourt advantage in the first round if they were playing in the East. That should tell you how terrible the NBA Eastern Conference is right now. The Hawks didn’t make any kind of run down the stretch to get into the playoffs. They just lost at a lesser rate than the other pathetic teams in the conference. The Phillips Arena will be sold out for their first playoff game, but I guarantee you that at least 50% of the fans in the arena will be cheering for the Celtics. The Hawks have no shot of beating the Celtics. They can only hope to play respectable enough not to embarrass themselves.

I’d make plans, starting one week after the playoffs begin, that don’t include going to or watching a Hawks game.

I think this team can really turn things around with Johnson and Bibby on the team. It is time to move the Hawks up the Atlanta sports team talent list

  • Braves
  • Thrashers
  • Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
  • Georgia State Panthers
  • Hawks
  • Falcons

You people kill me with this get rid of the coach crap. I mean this man has had to deal with CHILDREN who are playing against grown men every year and yet he has constantly improved. Now we are actually in the playoffs.

Put yourself in MIKE WOODSON’S shoes. He has had to deal with a terrible GM LIKE BILLY KNIGHT WHO TRIED TO STAB HIM IN THE BACK BY ASKING THAT HE BE FIRED! HE TRIED TO FIRE HIM EVEN THOUGH HE KNEW HE WAS BRINGING IN MIKE BIBBY, A POINT GUARD SOMETHING THAT WOODSON HAD NEVER HAD.

NO OTHER COACH COULD HAVE WON BIG WITH THIS WITHOUT HAVING THE RIGHT PIECES. HE WANTED THAT GUY FROM NEW ORLEANS WHO IS ON THE HIGHLIGHTS EVERY NIGHT BUT DUMB BILLY WANTED MARVIN.

YOU COULD FIRE WOODSON BUT THAT WOULDN’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH THIS TEAM.

ANYWAY GO HAWKS!! EVEN THOUGH YOU WILL BE SWEPT!

I felt from the start of the season they would make the playoffs, maybe even finish at .500. They made two great decisions in the draft that really improved the team. With the addition of Bibby, I see them being maybe 10 games better next year, but I don’t see them getting any better than that. They won’t get past the Celtics this year, but I hope they extend them to as many games as possible. Win the home games and who knows what might happen. At least it will be fun. Don’t know if Woodson is the coach of the future, but he did help get them to where they are now. Enjoy the moment, its been a long time.

What is the Hawks draft status? Isn’t this the year Phoenix gets the first round pick regardless, to complete the Joe trade?

It’s to easy to make the playoff, a sub-par under 500 team vs the East leader is like the NCAA 1st seed vs the 16th seed, which has yet to ever win a game…The Celtics will sweep the Hawks…But lest we forget the Hawks are a team on the rise, we just need a few inspired trades or draft picks… tjs

Welcome back to the playoff Hawks. You made it in spite of the “Undertaker” as coach & gm Billy “Knightmare”.

The addition of Bibby, just in time to give us a point & another scoring option from the perimeter.

So, the Hawks draw Boston, hopefully we are not roadkill gone in 4. I see us breaking thru in game 3 and losing in 5 games. The games will competitive after the opening massacre in Boston. However, we lose in the end with the JJ isolation plays resulting failed fade aways at the shot clock buzzer. We will need someone else on the boards with Horford, but no one will emerge to help out as usual. Woody will be out coached, hopefully out the door in June.

In any event, congradulations Hawks for backing into the playoffs. Let’s win at least one game at home.

Draft bigs in second round, if “Knightmare” has not given them all away.!!

What does Portland, Indiana, and Golden State have in common? They are the only teams with rosters younger than the Atlanta Hawks. Oh, and none of those other teams are going to the playoffs.

I think Mike Woodson did a good job. It’s Billy Knight that you have to shake your head at.

I know everyone on here is saying “rest JJ, rest JJ” which Mike Woodson should do but the only scary thing about resting JJ is that his body is so used to playing over 40+ min a game that with that much rest time, (2 games plus 2 or 3 off days) will cause JJ to be extremely cold..and that won’t be good for us. And I blame Woodson for that cause JJ should have been getting rest but unfortunately, I think JJ HAS to get some mins(maybe only 20-25 min) in both these games to keep his body energy up. Do u guys agree???

All the teams in the west are around 600 and only two in the east are 600-the rest are below and of course Toronto and the Hawks are under 500.

And we should be excited for underachievement? That is what Atlantas’s Gov’t run schools teach-HAND OUT CITY. Give me this-I’ve been oppressed-stop the BS insanity! Boston and Detroit should be given a BYE because NO team under 500 should be allowed in. That would make as much sense as allowing ND this year at 2-9 to go to a bowl. Under 500-good job-you were the best WORST team to get in. Typical Atlanta. heck the UT Lady Vols could beat the Hawks in a 7 game series. WHO CARES!?!
