Post-game forum: Braves fall to 1-3
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Braves fell to the Pirates Thursday and fell to 1-3 this season.
Mike Hampton was scheduled to make his first start since 2005 but injured a chest muscle in warmups. How big a blow is Hampton’s injury?
What are your thoughts on the game, and the season so far?
How will the Braves fare against the Mets this weekend? How important is that series?

Why is Hampton still on the roster?? Rub some dirt on it and play some ball man! Get rid of this guy, please. I know it’s very early, but the Braves look very average at best. The Pirates are not exactly teeming with talent.

“How big a blow is Hampton’s injury?” Thats a joke right? What’s the point in having him around. Phil Neikro is of more value to the club than this guy. I bet Phil would at least give us one start. Honestly I don’t know what the long term solution is but it is not M.H.. How Big a Blow? What does the old seventies song say….”Nothing from Nothing Leaves Nothing, But You got to have something….” God Bless Bobby Cox.

not a good start so far. the bullpen has not faired well. two of our starters are on the DL, and one is just coming off the DL. we aren’t getting clutch hits.

The double move in the top of the 10th would have been dumb even if it worked. The move took Diaz out of the game when he was the second hitter up in the bottom of the inning. Instead of the hitting fool up in th 10th, Blanco took 3 strikes without lifting the bat off his shoulder. Then, naturally, Kotsay triples with 2 OUT AND NOBODY ON.

I’m sick and tired of Bobby Cox playing matchups every single game. Why do you think the bullpen is tired? Throw the righty righty matchups out the window and let Ring pitch….he struck out Laroche and then you put Resop who’d been bad the first couple of batters back in? I’m strongly in favor of going with the hot arm, and Teixeira needs to wake the ** up, we stranded so many guys on base tonight, 11 hits and 3 errors by the other team should get you a win, hell it got the Pirates a win the other night against us!

wow…thats all i can say about mike hampton, his injury pretty much set the tone for the night. Honestly the only thing hampton has brung is a negative vibe to our club. He should do the Braves a favor and retire. And about the Mets series… i know its early but the Braves better show up this weekend, cause we lost 3 of 4 from 2 second division teams…that will not cut it im sorry…i hate to b*tch at escobar cause hes been great, but you gotta put the game away in the sixth with a 3-1 count and the bases juiced and chipper behind him …gotta put the game away right there instead of looking at strike 3…Talent is there but it looks like this team just doesnt know how to win.

Sometimes I think Bobby Cox is an idiot…take Diaz out???? Man, I just bring Ring in and let him pitch. Lot of good it did to bring Resop back into the game…gives up the game winning hit. Ring could have done that…and Diaz would have been up in the bottom of the 1oth. Hey, Bobby, why not bring in Charlie Leibrant again to pitch to Kirby Puckett. That was a brilliant move as well!!!!!!

Hampton hurt? No way? Really. What a pathetic waste that man is. Cox is getting senile I think. WHY MUST EVERY OPPOSING BATTER HAVE HIS OWN INDVIDUAL PICTHER?!! Let F*ing Royce do his thing, damn it! The Mets are gonna stomp a mudhole in us and walk it dry we’re gonna be 1-6.

Booby Cox used to win scads of regular season games before making ludicrous choke moves in post-season.
At least now he’s consistent.

Someone needs to tell Resop that when the games on the line with a man at 3rd & you have a 98MPH fastball, you throw the cheese till he either hits it or makes an out. If he can hit a 98MPH fastball you tip your hat & say good hit. Resop threw a 80MPH curve to Nady and he hits it up the middle. I’m betting he never gets around on the fastball!

Bobby Friggin Cox is the reason the Braves will never win another World Series. The whole thing with using every one of his relievers every night has to stop. It’s no wonder our bullpen sucked at the end of last year, they were worn the f out!!! And the move tonight: I was at the game and was completely dumbfounded when it was announced that Resop was staying in the game to play left field. Ring has now pitched to LaRoche three times this series (and struck him out each time) for a combined total of an inning of work! **WHY does Bobby insist on only using him for one batter?!?!? Resop had just finished walking two batters and throwing one in the dirt that got by Corky Miller. And Cox made a special provision for him to stay in the game. WHERE in his performance did he deserve to stay in to pitch to Nady (who has killed us this series)? If the Braves are ever to win another World Series, Bobby Cox must go.
On Hampton: I knew it would happen, but I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. I certainly didn’t expect it to happen before he even took the field. It’s way past time he hung up his spikes.

Hampton has no heart, no guts and certainly no CAHONAS.
As for the pitching situation, after just four games the bullpen has already logged 23.2 innings while the starters have accounted for just 17.1 innings of work.
Cox has already overworked his bullpen.
Tex isn’t hitting yet.
Kelly Johnson should be on the D.L.
The Braves defense has become a problem by committing five errors and allowing two passed balls, not to mention numerous missed relay throws during the three losses so far.
The Braves live and die with the long ball as evidenced by the twelve extra base hits while they have yet to steal one single base.
Bobbyball can only be successful if the Braves pitch well, play solid defense and hit the home run.
They have not done that in the three losses.
The one win was textbook Cox baseball and this is why they are 1-3.

Mike Hampton is a disgrace to himself and to the city of Atlanta. He is the most injury plagued athlete of all time. The Braves are kidding themselves if they think he will be of any value this season or ever again. Fool me once shame on you, fool me 4 times, shame on me. This guy consistently steals money year after year. Go cash your checks Mike and please get the hell off my baseball team. You make me sick.

I’m beginning to wonder about Hampton. This is like being punked… by accident. I’m serious, this guy lacks the heart. He had a few great seasons, and he’s afraid to continue for fear that he’ll fall short of expectations. I know this. He’s not up for the fight. He’d rather just hang with his fam and friends, enjoy some ganja. I can totally identify with situation. Why screw with it. He just wants to live!

Royce Ring is a lefty specialist. His delivery makes it tough for left handed hitters to pick up. That is what makes him good, not his stuff. His stuff is very average. I love how every AJC blogger critiques Bobby after something doesn’t work, but if it does, it is expected. Being a manager is a tough job, and Bobby has been employed continuously with the same club for almost 20 years. There is a reason for that. He know what he is doing. That is why he is in the dugout, and you idiots are on the AJC blogs.

That was scenario for the purpose of making unquilified Joseph Reyes to Major Leaguer. Don’t you understand? Why Joseph Reyes? Chuck James and Buddy Charyle are 100times greater than fraud Reyes.
Fire Bobby Cox and McDowel, he is slave of the bad christianity, friend of Babylonian.
And why three catchers? USA was crazy slave nation of Babylon? for the purpose of disturbing Brandon Jones’s playing in MLB, they are making just play.

Those 2008 Atlanta Braves…are they fun, or what? They have Mark T. (their “2008 Boras Boy”) doing his best Andruw J. impersonation. What does he care? He’ll get his $18-$20 million. What a joke. This bull- pen has spit out 3 of 4 games (but Tyler Yates struck out Chipper twice). The powers that be in Atlanta still know how to make good baseball decisions! Corky Miller (Mr. Defenseive Catcher) has 2 pass balls last night, and helped in Thursday’s loss. The Braves are 1-3 against the Nats and Bucco’s. After the weekend they’ll be 1-6. I know, I know, it’s a long season. This collection of ball players(?) have made it seem like a long season after 4 games. Have no fear…Bobby will turn them around. He’ll have them a .500 ball club by season’s end (because, at best, that’s all they are).

I can’t believe no one has brought up Gregor Blanco’s incredibly bad at-bat in the bottom of the 10th. He never offered at 3 beautiful, right-down-the-middle fast balls. One run down, in the bottom of the 10th, and his bat remains on his shoulder. 3 pitches, sit down. While Matt Diaz, the victim of Cox’s brilliant pitcher-outfield move watches from the bench.

Oh ya, Kotsay, there was a great move. This guy is a double play machine, when there is a man on base in front of him. Other teams breathe a sign of relief when he steps into the box. Do you suppose that there is any chance that Mark T. could end up with the Dodgers? That would be great. He and Andruw could GRIN at each other as they fatten up financially, without regard to performance.

When are the Braves going to finally realize that the Mike Hampton era is OVER and quit paying him millions of dollars to grow old on the DL??? Can we please get rid of him and his hefty salary and use it to get a bullpen that won’t blow our starters leads!!

Can we please get rid of Chris Resop. If I have to look at his “deer in headlights” expression one more time, I’m switching the channel. He throws 97 mph, but constantly gets behind because he is trying to fool guys with an average breaking ball. Pitching 101: get ahead of hitters. High schoolers know this, but meatheads like Resop don’t understand this concept. He is a clone of Yates, who we just wisely shipped off. Now that I think about it, Yates would be a nice change of pace. He’s actually getting guys out (He still stinks). I understand that it is still early, but the ability to locate pitches is not something that is usually absent at the start of the year. He’s a “thrower” not a “pitcher” and that is unacceptable out of the pen.
P.S. Hampton, you can’t be serious. April Fools day was Tuesday. You’re injuries are becoming comical.

My God what a bunch of whining twits. Bobby Cox takes the Braves to like fifty division titles in a row, and you all throw him under the bus for one loss. Try digesting fifteen losing seasons in a row like us folks here in the ‘Burgh. Think about that, and then maybe take another look at Bobby Cox

Still haven’t learned how to win 1 run games - reason?? No Clutch hitting.
Why does everyone excuse Tex for no hitting because he’s a slow starter. Seems to me with that knowledge in mind, he should have been given tons of bats in every exhibition game to get him up to speed BEFORE the season began rather than watching him NOT PRODUCE during 3 losses.
Still contend he’s never had a meaningful late inning base hit. Chipper is the ONLY clutch hitter on the team.
Announcers at the end of the game applauded the great job the bullpen did. Hmmmmmmm … as I remember it, Braves were up 3-2 when the bullpen took over the game.
Great job - we only lost by 1 run (again).

This is unexcusable! When we play the Pirates, Nationals, Marlins we need to take at least two out of three everytime!
It never seems that we have a good bullpen. A very healthy Soriano and a very healthy Gonzales can not keep the load.

I disagree Ben. Sometimes the manager makes the right moves and the player fails to execute. Passed balls and pitch selection had a lot to do with the Braves losing. I like the Resop move to LF for a batter. I know he was an outfielder as recently as ‘03, maybe since. I wouldn’t blame Cox for this one. Corky, Blanco, and Resop hurt us tonight. Kudos to Jeff Bennett

The Braves should mail Hampton his paycheck and kick his crap to the curb, before his sissiness rubs off on anybody else. I used to like him but he is gutless. At least, take the mound and pretend you got hurt during the game. How the hell do you pull a pec muscle warming up? What a weenee.

Lost in the disappointing loss last night was the good work of Bennett. I thought he looked super out there. Especially in the first 3 innings where you could tell he was just pitching and not over analyzing what he was doing. His pitches had lots of movement on them as opposed to some of our hard throwers who throw straight balls. He kind of reminded me of a Greg Maddux, who hardly ever threw a straight ball in his life in his prime.I predict good things for Bennett. He just needs more experience and confidence.

Losing 3 out of 4 to two of the weakest teams in the NL is not a way to start the season. This Braves team hasn’t shown me a damn thing yet. Is Corky Miller suppose to be a major league catcher— 2 passed balls last night on routine pitches. Starters that can’t go move than 5 or 6 innings, a bullpen that can’t hold a lead, and no clutch hits. Sound familiar. Same old crap as last year.
