What do you call these Dogs?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Now that Georgia has capped off its improbable run to the NCAA Tournament run, it’s time to assess where last weekend’s SEC tourney championship ranks in the school’s illustrious sports history.
Is this the best moment ever in UGA’s largely unglorious basketball past? Does it rate with the 1983 Final Four team?
Or is the feat by embattled coach Dennis Felton’s team even more significant than that? Does it deserve mention with some of the greatest football accomplishments at UGA?
What sort of moniker should this team take into Thursday’s NCAA first round game against Xavier?
Wonder Dogs?
Miracle Mutts?
Unbelieva-Bulldogs?
And should Felton, who was likely to have been fired, receive a hefty contract extension? How should athletics director Damon Evans reward his coach?

Ask Chip Towers where this ranks. How tasty was that crow?

I feel that Dennis Felton deserves a shot at the top Indiana job. He has shown that he has the class, composure, and coaching skills to get the job done. He deserves more than a raise and contract extension. He deserves true recognition by moving upward to a well established program such as Indiana. This would be fair compensation for the man.

An English Bulldog is FAR from a mutt. As far as the final four team. NO, not yet. That team not only won the SECC, it also beat UNC and St Johns on the way to the final four. Check that UNC roster from 1983, you might find some names you recognize. And that team did it all without Dominique, who left the year earlier. Concering CDF. Great run. But four games do not erase this season. Not just the wins and losses, but losing Mercer and Brown and then haveing players leave the team. It feels like he lost control. Give him a one year extension. I think that is fair enough for what he and the team pulled off at the manure dome.

@RFP—what crow would he eat? All he did was state facts—it wasn’t an editorial piece. Georgia’s outlook was as bleak as could be. And even if Towers did predict that they wouldn’t even beat Ole Miss, it’s not like anyone else did either.

I have to admit up front that I don’t follow the bball team because there has not been much to cheer for in a very long time, but that game yesterday was so much fun. I don’t like basketball except for this time of year because anything can happen, and what happend this weekend was truly amazing. I hope we can win a game or two to shake things up. UGA-VS-Duke in the sweet 16!!!

It is refreshing to be able to say I’m a Georgia fan and not have someone throw our basketball team up in my face. For years now, I have claimed to be about as interested in UGA basketball as I am in UGA badminton.
I will never utter that statement again.

Coach Felton has doon a damn good “CLEAN” job with all the trash he inherited. And quite a few games went to the last minute or so. He runs a disiplined program and should get a 3 year extension and raise. Next year will be his own players and no more Harrick ghost to run from. It’s clear the kids respond to his personality and style. Just think what may have been if we didn’t suspend 3 starters right before the season for violations that us fans never really knew what the were for. He knew it would change hie season but without question he dismissed them. That Tells Everyone what type morals and beleifs he has. Thanks COACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If all of you people were true georgia fans you would’ve been supporting these guys all along through all tough times and even the losses. Being a true Georgia fan means you’re there during the wins and the losses in ALL sports!! That’s called LOYALTY I don’t consider these johnny come lately cheerleaders real fans…if you were a real fan you would’ve been there with the rest of us when the team needed the bulldog nation the most!!! These wins are for the guys who have perservered and done what had to be done and for the fans who stuck by them when nobody else would!!

Kendall you’re an idiot. Concerning coach Felton, let’s throw out the SEC tournament. John Wooden with Coach K as an assistant along side Adolph Rupp would not have done any better with the hand Felton has been dealt. If Brown and Mercer had been at some SEC schools, they would still be starting. If a 20 year old pouts because he isn’t getting to play as much as HE thinks and quits, leaving Felton in a situation that he has to play point guard Gaines at forward in the 2-3, why is it the fault of the coach that a 7 footer turns into a sissy?? With Brown and Mercer we win 22 games plus the tournament.
He didn’t lose any control he KEPT control by not allowing 20 year old thugs to act as they please. You can’t MAKE these kids do anything. They make decisions themselves. It’s not the coaches fault that they are stupid. It’s not the coaches fault that Dr. Adams hand picked coach and bestest buddy Harrick left the program in such disarray that no decent player wanted to come to play. Why would anyone come to UGA when the administation won’t let the players participate in the SEC tournament when it’s the COACH who screwed up? No kid wants to go somewhere they punish the kid for what an adult did that he had no control over.
No matter how many wins he gets, like Coach Richt, Coach Felton represents my alma mater the way I want it represented, with class, dignity and INTEGRITY. That’s more than I can say for our illustrious president. As far as I’m concerned Coah Felton gets to stay as long as he wants. Idiots.

Great run, the guys like Gaines really deserve it. Hope they give Xavier a run or better yet a grind it out, slow it down effort like we gave every game in the sec tourney. As far as the future, I hope Felton really concentrates on developing the relationships with the hs coaches in georgia, plenty of talent here to feed a very good consistent program at UGA. No reason UGA can’t be right around 20 wins year in and year out.

Cody,
I think you’re almost on point but where you are mistaken is that all of the players Felton dismissed were his players. He recruited them all. He didn’t inherit any problem players from Coach Harrick just the penalties that Harrick left behind. He has done a good job fighting through those and has proven his worth as a Coach.

I think Felton has earned another two years, but not a raise yet. With everyone except Yata and Bliss coming back (as good as they are) and with the incoming recruiting class and return of this year’s injured freshmen, the Pups should be able to win some games. Of course, if they have another regular season like this one, he’ll be right back on the hot seat.
Just one point I would like to make concerning something Felton has said about not being one to call a lot of timeouts. I’m not any sort of expert on basketball, but it seems that if you only have 8 scholarship players, you should call as many TO’s as possible to let the players catch their breath.

Coach Felton may not get a raise but he did one heck of a job coaching. We keep referring to the losses pf Mercer and Brown. Those young men were not attending class or were some kind of distraction. I was reminded of Jarvis Hayes (who I loved to watch play ball)leaving UGA with a GPA under 2. I think Coach Felton is building to make UGA a premier program. Lets see how we do in the NCAAs and next year. Then people might have a reason to talk.

The thing that puzzled me the most were the post of “why should we give him another chance” or the references to a one year extention. It was never another “chance” or an “extention”. Felton is only in the 5th year of an 8 yr contract. The only question was if UGA was going to break thier own contract. I don’t think they were anyway, but given the results of the weekend, certainly not.

To all you UGA basher that say ‘one and done’, ‘lucky lucky lucky’ or anything negative about this team, you guys can kiss the Bulldogs’ @$$. All I can say is you’re all jealous that the Bulldogs did the impossible…and did it in your own court. These guys have heart and to play two games in one day and win them both when they were expected to not get past the first game of the tournament says a lot about the players and the coach. At least Georgia won the SEC tournament and advanced to the NCAA tourny. Tickets to the SEC tournament, $40. Hotel in downtown Atlanta, $150. Watching the Bulldogs cut the net at Alexandria Memorial Coliseum, PRICELESS.

On this very blog last week I stated, several times I might add.”Why fire Felton? Who the hell else are we going to get”? Now I’m glad hopefully he will stay a few more years and build a successful program as Vandy, Fla and Tenn have done recently. UGA will never be a national power in BBall but it would be nice to be more competitive in the future with our rivals

Someone responded about the criticism of Felton about 2 months ago, the person outlined the number of players that have left and why. Mercer/Brown were asked to leave because of the lack of “academic progress” and attitude/disciplinary problems. Wish the guy , would provide the article i should have saved. My point is this,Felton lost 40% of his starting lineup plus a couple of subs. Imagine if Richt lost Stafford,Moreno,Sturdivent and Boling on offensive and the equilivent on defense. IMAGINE THE IMPACT!!
Because of the finish give the guy at least 2 more yrs. Remember how Coach K, started @ Duke-horried.

Phil Nice name calling. Lets see here, and we will look at facts. Lets start with support of the basketball team at OUR alma mater. I went to 17 games this year. How many did you go to? I donate every year to the student educational fund. How bout you? I have been a BB season ticket holder since 1984. How bout you? Control of a team means maintaining control. I DO know what went on behind the scenes. I am not priveledged, I just happen to have some friends in the program, as do many other people. CDF managed 4 wins this year with a patchwork team. But why was it patchwork? He has been there the EXACT amount of time that Bruce Pearl has been at ut. He recruited these players, same as CMR has recruited his players. I dont see half of the football team getting kicked off the team, or quiting. do you? Keep the blinders on. Only a strong man can point his powers of observation at himself. CDF made a great run in the tournament and deserves an extention. One year. Any more is wiping out 5 years of frustration for a weekend worth of play. And before you say it, yeah, I am aware of the program and what shape it was in when he got it. 5 years is enough. Looks like he might be getting it where it needs to be. Lets give him another year to find out if thats true. Grow up phil, and look up the word idiot before you go spouting if off while sitting at a keyboard in a darkened room.

Good job DAWGS! As a Western Kentucky Alum in Atlanta, I enjoyed seeing Felton winning the SECC. We hated to see him leave WKU, he is an excellent man, and a great role model for all of these players. You can not find many people who have had some type of interaction with the man and have something negative to say. Felton runs a program the way it should be, as some of you guys have said, with class, and integrity. If UGA would have gotten rid of him, he would not have been out of a job for long.
Good Luck Dawgs, take down X!!

Great run for a bunch of average Joes, this shows what can be accomplished if you hustle, and play smart. That said, I think CDF should tell Damon Evans, and Mike Adams to stick their contract where the sun doesn’t shine. If that snake oil purveyor Jim Harrick could’ve won 20 plus games a season and not get caught, he’d still be here. CDF was asked to clean up a mess that he didn’t make, and everybody wanted his head because he asked people to be accountable.

This was an amazing feat for the Dawgs and struggling coach Dennis Felton. This should definitly give him a contract extention after the tornado on Friday night, then playing 2 games in the same day. I’d call them Felton’s Fighters. Every guy that made it to the end of the season and got to see the nets come down at Alexander is a fighter. Xavier should win and they have no excuse not to win! But if Georgia pulls off another miracle, then don’t make any excuses. If Xavier wins, then there’s really nothing to be proud of since they are expected to win against a 14th seed team anyways. Georgia has nothing to lose. Hey X-Man…..yes, we are athletic and play a very physical style of play…our league demands it.
And yes, the A10’s big sport is basketball.
In the last 20 years - the A10 did place one (1) team in the final four (UMass in 96)
The SEC (football conference) - has had 12 appearences in the last 20 years - which is the 3rd best behind the ACC ‘s 18 and Big 10’s 16 and has won 5 National Titles - second only to the ACC’s 6 NT’s.
Congrats on a great year - you should be able to beat the Dawgs - but the money says you will not make it to the great 8, final 4 or a NT game…..being from the A10.

Anyways, I’ve already thrown the insignificant card on Xavier. Tech isn’t far behind.
Fostering my point further, who from Xavier has ever played in the NBA? Certainly someone, but, just as certainly, no one I or anyone else has ever heard of. So for Xavier to all of a sudden be NCAA basketball royalty is news to me. Forgive my Wayne’s World imitiation of “We’re Not WORTHY!!”
This is the SEC. Its dog eat dog every day. NBA players in waiting are awash in every locker room.
Cinderella’s got experience, confidence, and heart. Who wants next? Seriously, WHO? Xavier? No really Xavier Who? X-Man McDaniel? Who? Reality check. You’re an insignificant team, with insignificant graduates, from an isignificant conference I don’t even know. Don’t care either. Giddyup.

You are welcome DOG fans for being able to use our court. Congrats on the win, but don’t talk trash about winning on our court or taking the nets that off our baskets.

No, the pep talk will be “There’s this jack@$$ who calls himself xuin90 and doesn’t have a life but to get in Georgia forums to talk and drool all over his Xavier team. He seems to like watching Xavier play their D in the perimeter and claims their the best. Let’s go out there and kick some Musty-teers @$$es. When we win, be sure to turn to the camera and show the middle finger to xuin90.”

So now all of a sudden Georgia has basketball fans? Nope. Don’t bother getting on the bandwagon. Go back to spring practice while you still have the excitement of being a preseason pick (then you start another losing streak to the Gators, a loss against LSU, and throw in another one you should win but won’t while your narcisistic (sp?) QB implodes at some point) What your boys did in winning that tournament was truly an awesome display of grit, but your basketball fanbase, or lack thereof, is a joke. Deny it if you will, and jump on the bandwagon, but those boys don’t need you now. You haven’t been there all year.
And I’m not a Jacket, a Gator, a War Eagle, or even a Cack from Columbia. Just somebody that calls a pitiful Dawg fanbase, or lack thereof, out when it’s necessary. Blog away losers, but you had nothing to do with this team’s great tourny run, and none of you even thought it a possibility.

Thanks for that NBA list. You made my point for me. I mean Romain Sato? WTF? James Posey rings a bell at least.
Bearish?? Thanks for the Street reference, particularly on the day my old employer was purchased for peanuts. A propos. Geography no. Weather and Climate freshman year. Yes.
Listen, I have since learned Xavier plays in theAtlantic 10. Who cares. Are there even 10 teams that play D1 basketball? If you doubt your insignificance, click here where you’ll see that Rivals.com actually thinks you are the Alabama Crimson Tide. http://xavier.rivals.com/cbroster.asp
A slap in the face to you , but, to be sure, probably a step up. Listen, did you listen to the hype regarding Hawaii, Colt Brennan, etc ad nauseum? Did you see the result? Painful. Same deal applies. We aren’t Fairleigh Dickinson. To say you’ll blow it out by 20 is laughable when we have one of the best guards in the country. And where is the tourney won and lost? Guard play. Cincinnatti? Blech. Sounds like Cleveland with a casino.

Go ahead, have the stage. This is the only time your school is recognized in sports so go ahead, tell everyone how proud you are that you will beat a 14 seeded team. Go ahead, lay it on the Dawgs because when you lose, it will be that much sweeter and your Musketeers can crawl back to the cold Cincinatti weather. The stage is yours buddy. Have at it!

For what’s its worth, I am not on board with “BustACap“‘s views on the middle finger to anyone. Talk trash if you want, but use facts, not gestures. When did Mike Mercer learn how to use a computer? Or is that BustaRhymes new moniker? Either way, similar results.

Xavier Daddy…funny stuff, guess you haven’t seen Drew Lavender’s guard play.Come on man, Jarvis Hayes,Damien Wilkins, but you did have one of best ever in Dominique.Btw,the Cleveland reference hurts the most! Also, Xman said, by 20…I said 15! If that eases the pain.

I promise its not our fault you have to walk around Polk County, Tennessee in Orange and White checks. (Drive up 411 from Tennga nd you’ll see the house painted as such on the east side of the highway just north of Old Fort). You are however correct, we had nothing to do with the tourney run. That was the team. Was it unexpected? Yes! Was it exciting? Yes! However, so was Bruce Pearl showing up barechested in orange body paint. (Calm your excitement level on the last BS). Look at the bright side… at least Kenny Chesney loves you.

Daddy, sorry….wrong. Don’t live in a double-wide or drive it to games, so I’m not a Vol either. But deflecting the point of my post to a funny little barb is quite clever. Pitiful fanbase chief, that’s what you and your pugs are…..period. Losers all year, and now trying to jump on the bandwagon with these kids. Sure, they need you and so does your coach. But a school with 40,000+ students can’t sell out a place like Stegeman or outdraw Kentucky or Arkansas in a game played 60 miles from your campus. (no excuses on the limited tickets, I doubt the Dawgs even had 500 on their list).
So come on, give me another funny line and throw in something that is irrelevant since you simply won’t except the fact that your mighty school can’t support it’s “big-time” basketball program the way others in the mighty conferences can. Keep trying to figure out which school you can bash for me if that makes you feel better about the shortcomings of your fanbase. My God people, you’re putting down a team from the A-10 that has easily outshined you, the Harvard of the South, not just this year in basketball but the past few years. Before you go there, not a Xavier person either. Actually don’t care who wins this weekend because neither are going much further anyway.

I like xuin90. He has a sense of humor and appreciates what this time of year is all about. Good old fashioned competition. BS on the other hand. I could take him or leave him. I don’t want to guess what your affiliation is, b/c I don’t care that much. I’ll get a “barb” in on UT any chance I can get, deserved or not. When a coach resembles a pumpkin more than a person, I can’t be restrained.
Alas, you are correct in a sense, but also incorrect. We HAVE a fanbase. We don’t have much of a history. If Tubby had stayed, that might be totally different, and I’m sure he regrets that move to UK now. Cards, dealt. FWIW, I was one who wanted Felton to stay b4 the tourney run, b/c we have some players coming in.
What was unexpected and totally different was the unselfish team play, extra passes, etc. in the tourney that we didn’t see all year. IF they bought in, all of a sudden, we could be very happy soon.

KENDALL, sorry for the name calling buddy, I was mistaken. You’re not an idiot, you’re a stupid freakin’ idiot.
Second clue to that was giving a dime to the University of Georgia with Michael Adams at the helm to over see the spending of it.
Third clue was comparing basketball to football. To lose half (half was your number)the football team would mean 42 or 43 scholarship players. Losing a comparable number of football players would be about 20. That doesn’t happen, but lots of programs lose 3 BB players. Obviously as an athletic supporter(in more ways than one) and not an athlete, whatever you know about “behind the scenes,” you’re not clued in to the fact that these are individuals that are too old to be baby sat. They make their own decisions. The players CMR recruits make stupid decisions, too. Usually more than three of them a year. If Stafford and Mareno decide not to attend class, even though they’ve been told to and threatened several times and say Caleb King decides to go to Valdosta State because they aren’t giving him the ball enough, is that CMR’s fault??? And that’s only 3 or 4% of the entire scholarship team. Don’t you think that would have a major impact? You don’t “control” people. People make their own decisions. You “control” the program by getting rid of those who don’t abide by the rules. So that was an asinine comparison.
Next the comparison of Bruce Pearl at UT who, btw has a 2 seed team that routed us by 3 points, were you there, Mr. BB season ticket holder? Bruce Pearl who while recruiting against us can use the fact that our administration will punish the players for anything they deem the coaches do wrong. Bruce Pearl who inherited no mess when he came to UT, The Bruce Pearl of loud mouth and questionable adulterous character.
You are obviously one of those people who turn my stomach because all they care about is winning, no matter what. Representing MY school with integrity and class, teaching mental toughness and dealing with adversity is way more important to me.
And if Bruce Pearl is so good, why did his team lose in the tournament to a team we beat twice? Seems like your idol could coach ‘em up enough to prevent something like that. IF he was so good, that is. Stupid freakin idiot. The only dark room I see from here is between your ears.
Are you in sales, Kendall?

Speaking of geography, I never knew there was a Cincinnati on the Atlantic Coast. And how ‘bout Jarvis Hayes game against New Orleans the other evening? Hey, I thought there were only 3 Musketeers,, or is it the Xavier Mouseketeers? Aren’t Brittany and Christina and Annette Mouseketeers? Hey, girls, welcome to the SEC… which way to the women’s locker room? Go ask Harry, the guy with a big bulldog head standing over there. Hey, long-hair, you with the cape and boots and the funny hat, our mascot beat down the Oregon duck, wanna try your luck?

I’m not sure what we should call our team but I call this scary. Is this D’Artagnan, (that’s pronounced dar-tan-yen for you rednecks in trailers who never read Alexander Dumas)? OK, we got Brittany, Christine, Annette, and D’Artagnan. Who’s the other starter for the Mouseketeers?

I feel very happy for the team winning the tournament. Now maybe Coach Felton will quit using Mercer & Brown, Harrick and bad officials for losing games. He still is not a great coach. I think he needs to finally thank God for something because without a tornado hitting the dome right before his game and Kentucky having only 400 fans for the scrimmage, Georgia would have surely loss that game. That really shows how weak the SEC is this season that a 4-12 team wins the torunament and wins 2 games in one day. That would never happened in the ACC, Big East, Pac Ten etc. NO WAY!!

Yes, the SEC is somewhat down. Yes, Georgia was in the easier side of the bracket for the tournament. But really, who cares? Stegeman Coliseum can now hang another SEC Championship banner!
I’m going to the first round game versus Xavier, and it’ll be interesting to see how they play and respond to the new environment. I really believe that this is a top 20 team when they play to their potential, and it seems Felton has found some way to spark this.
But what a beautiful time for UGA sports! The football team was the nation’s favorites last year- from rushing the field at Jacksonville after the Knowshon touchdown, black jerseys for the first time, and now going from worst to first in 4 (arguably 3) days.
You have to feel great for these seniors. http://www.ajc.com/search/content/sundiata0308.html. They came in when the program was down and got it figured out just in time. Even if they lose in the first round, they’ll always be able to look at their SEC trophies.
And when they leave next year? Swansey has proven a suitable replacement (even a more pure PG) and we’ve got Billy and Terrance to lead the team. A good recruiting class (two big guys) and a renewed confidence. Not to mention the added intensity from the fans that comes naturally from winning the tournament. Stegeman may not be the newest, prettiest arena but it does get loud when it’s full and the team is playing well.
We need to keep Felton. I was on the fence because of the trouble the team was having. I realize now how every situation is different and you can’t compare the UGA program to others in terms of how long it takes them to get turned around. Sometimes the problem is that there’s just no spark, and we finally got one.
Dennis Felton did not recruit thugs or serial academic offenders. If you were really familiar with the standards these guys have to meet to be on the team, you’d realize that Mercer and Brown only had to miss 10 or so tutoring sessions all year to be in violation.
What Felton did was recruit players that met UGA’s academic standards and when he found out they were in violation of the rules (no matter how stringent they were) he took action. I don’t think anyone short of a fortune teller could foresee the difference between Brown’s academic performance and, say, Sundiata’s. It took a championship coach with impeccable character to uphold the rules of the institution and build the program the RIGHT way.
Felton may not be the coach that Bruce Pearl, Tubby Smith, or John Calipari may be. But he is a great man who won a championship in a power conference and is dedicated to the school and building a respectable program without shortcuts. What more could you really ask for?
Sorry for rambling, but as someone who has been to all of their recent home games, it’s frustrating to still hear complaints after finally seeing great results from a very honorable program.

No doubt these Dogs did what no one thought they would do, including Georgia fans. I don’t know how this ranks with the 1983 Final Four team, but I really thnks it excedes it. What these dogs did, going 4-12 in regular SEC play, then rallying 4 straight wins to win the conference tourney was miraculous. I don’t know if it is ranks up with some of the glorious Georgia moments, AKA Lindsey Scott, Hob nail boot, Michael Johnson, but it is definetely up there. Felton did a great job in getting this team motivated to play when they could have easily given up and gotten ready for next year. I have to say, I was ready to get rid of Felton but after what he did, he deserves a contract extension and a chance to bring Georgia Basketball up.
