Live from the SEC tournament

There’s not a big crowd at the Georgia Dome but a lot of people are paying attention to today’s SEC tournament opener between LSU and South Carolina, which tipped off at 1. Here’s why:

Tennessee (28-3) is the heavy favorite to win the tournament. But there is a strong feeling that if LSU beats South Carolina this afternoon, Friday’s quarterfinal game with Tennessee will be much closer than people think.

“I think LSU is going to give Tennessee all they can handle,” TV analyst and Dunwoody resident Larry Conley told me a few minutes ago. “They are playing well. I think it will be a really good game.”

“Tennessee is the best team in our league but if they were to fall, every coach in this league thinks LSU could win the tournament,” South Carolina coach Dave Odom told me yesterday.

Odom spent 12 seasons as the head coach at Wake Forest before he came to South Carolina seven years ago. He had an interesting take on the quality of basketball in the SEC — at least for this season.

“There are more great shooters in this league than anywhere else,” he said. “Look at Shan Foster [Vanderbilt], Chris Lofton [Tennessee], Marcus Thornton [LSU].

“Remember J.J. Redick at Duke? This is a league full of J.J. Redicks.”

South Carolina up 12 with a little over a minute left. Looks like UT gets USC again for the second time in five days.

Dave Odom is a really smart coach. Except for, he’s not.

Every coach thinks LSU can win the tournament? Too bad they lost in the first round of the tournament.

The SEC is a league full of JJ Redicks? Too bad he’s the greatest NCAA shooter of all time (3-pointers and free throws).

I’m sure that Chris Lofton and Shan Foster will end up being the greatest shooters of all time…not.

Good game! Hopefully we won’t be too tired for UK tomorrow. You know, there is still one way the dogs can get a NCAA bid…

Also, thanks to Corey Butler for doing his best to give away this game. Its like the bulldogs came in the huddle and they said “All right guys. There’s ten seconds left. Were up by 3. This could be the biggest win of our crappy season. What can we do to screw this up..hmm I know! We’ll foul their best shooter when he comes down the floor. And lets make sure its while he’s shootin a three too so they can tie it! And if we get down the floor with time on the clock, make sure and pass it with 1 second on the clock so we can’t get a shot off, Yatta.”

After the first over time the Bulldogs come back in the huddle, up by 3 again with ten seconds on the clock: “All right, guys. We screwed this one up. We’re up by three again. Corey Butler, get your butt in there and foul ‘em again.”

I believe that UGA showed tonight why Dennis Felton is not a big-time coach.

Glad they won, but that was a pathetic last five minutes and overtime. That game should never have gone to OT. It was just absolute stupidity, which comes from the bench.

Joe solidifies my point. The players have put a great game together and are beating a better team. Then when it gets to crunch-time our strategy is terrible. Why are we fouling on three-pointers with ten seconds leftm twice? Three point shots hit at a 35-45% clip. Free Throws hit at a 75-90% clip. Its a no-brainer to not foul at that point. Its Felton’s job to make sure role players like Corey Butler know this.
