20-game season begins tonight
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In the eyes of Hawks All-Star Joe Johnson, the team’s 20-game season begins tonight in Orlando.
If the regular season was over, the Hawks would be in the playoffs for the first time since 1999. But the season isn’t over, and as Johnson puts it, “If we win more than we lose our chances of making the playoffs go up dramatically.”
So, what do you think? Do you think the Hawks will take care of business in the next 20 games and secure a playoff spot?
Let us know what you think. Also, check out Johnson’s full comments and comments by coach Mike Woodson as the team prepares for tonight’s game. (See story)

I think they can make the playoffs, they have the 3rd easiest schedule in the NBA for their remaining games. But, Josh Smith has to stop shotting the 20 ft jumper nad get tot the basket and they have to rebound better. Woodson has to still go though.

Seems more like a poll. I’m going with NO. I’m a huge Hawks fan, but from what I’ve seen after the first month, it’s the only answer I have. I hope I’m wrong, but we’ve seen the lack of intensity from some key guys lately that are crucial in a playoff push.

10 home games, 10 road. ATL is terrible on the road, so even though it’s an easier schedule, maybe they’ll go 2-8. 4 of the home games are almost definite losses (BOS, ORL x2, HOU), while none of the others are gimme games, as evidenced by the Hawks lack of prowess.
There’s no way they even come close to .500 much less go better than that.

Yes, I think they can make the playoffs, but the Hawks especially Josh Smith have to stop the one on one and bringing the ball down the floor. The fans have to stop being so critical and realize that these are youngsters and their egos are fragile. More encouraging remarks will help give them the confidence they so need.

If they really want to get to the playoffs, then they should get a new coach to take them in the rest of the way. Ten games under .500, facing the Celtics in the first round is not very appetizing.
Fire Woody and we will do better than the eighth seed. ITS NOT TOO LATE.

Glad to see the W’s against the Heat. How can the existing roster stop the dribble penetration down the gut? The combination of the penetration and kick out to the 3 is killing us. Marvin seems to be playing harder on D.

Don’t think the hawks have enough in the gas tank defensively. Lack of a forward with a consistant mid range shot will kill them in these final 20. No strong finishers off the dribble to get to the line! Not many small fwd’s can stop Jsmith but his shot selection is horrible. Coach should have harnassed that raw talent by now. Don’t have that killer instinct to finish games.
But they do play hard.

No way the Hawks make the playoffs this year and I’m almost glad of it. I really don’t want them sneak in with an 8-seed just to get totally embarrassed by Boston or Detroit. Talk about four ugly games that would only make this team appear even more of a joke than they already are.
I don’t think I have much to worry about though. Their play shows me they have already given up.

YES, THEY WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS BUT LET’S TALK ABOUT THE OFFSEASON FIRE WOODY AND BK. HIRE KENNY SMITH AND JEFF VAN GUNDY AS CO-GM AND MAKE VAN GUNDY COACH ALSO. TRADE JOSH SMITH 2 THE CLIPPERS IN A SIGN AND TRADE FOR ELTON BRAND. GET RID OF ZAZA AND MARVIN FOR VETERAN LEADERSHIP AT THERE POSITION. THE EAST DOESN’T HAVE ANY BIG MEN OTHER THAN HOWARD WITH BRAND SCORING DOWN LOW AL CAN CONTINUE 2 GROW W/O PRESSURE AND WE’LL BE A 50 WIN TEAM NEXT YEAR BABY. I would love for this team to make the playoffs being a die hard Hawks fan but when you stuggle to beat the worst team in the NBA(Heat) then that leave a little hope that you will make the playoffs…Marvin Williams is the X-Factor he has to step up his game these final 20 games.

The Hawks don’t have to necessarily play well down the stretch to make the playoffs. We’ve held on to the 8th spot playing barely over .400 ball for the season. The Nets are tanking and the Bulls have been a nightmare all season. Conceivably, it may only take 7-13 or 8-12 for us to lock up the final spot.
What we can’t have is another team get freakishly hot like the Sixers have in the last few weeks and pass us. Keep an eye on Charlotte. They’ve been on fire lately and are only 2.5 games behind us.

Once again, if the Hawks make the playoffs BK will give Woodson a 5 year contract extension. One of the main reasons the ASG won’t fire him or BK is that they are bleeding money because of all the court nonsense. They can’t afford a real GM or head coach. What makes anyone think that Jeff Van Gundy wants to coach this mess. What makes anyone think that Elton Brand wants to play for the Hawks. Four major contracts expire this year. BK, Woodson, Josh Smith and Josh Childress. Don’t be surprised if all four are gone.

Hey Y’all:
I went to the Hawks game on Friday for the first time since they got Mike Bibby. What i saw different from previous games was that the team appeared more under control down the stretch with the ball in his hands. However, I get a little scary seeing the Hawks not running and gunning. I hope that Woodson does not try to influence Bibby’s game by always slowing things down, running the same old four corner offense that I hate to see the Hawks play. I also hope they put some slashing plays in where the Hawks are attacking the rim on offense. This effort will draw a lot of fouls against the other team ans provide us with a lot of opportunities for 3 point plays. Bibby has a nknack for attacking the rim and dishing and pushing the ball back to a shooter. Let him lose so that he can pick up the tempo. Also Salim Stoudimire played great. I believe he will learn a lot from Bibby about running and controlling the tempo of the game as a point guard. He will learn more from Bibby, as a guard, than Woodson who was not. We need a creative guard mentality running the plays on the team. Let Bibby loose, put in some fast aggressive plays to allow Bibby to be creative. we go to run for us to win. Please Mike Woodson let’s not play that slow Bobby Knight basketball that you have been taught. It does not work with these young guys in the NBA.

COVINGTON,GA. Don’t ever use marvin williams and x-factor in the same sentence. It just makes you look bad. 0-9 shooting, he’s a total joke. Chris paul is a beast! He should have been a hawk. Marvin should be on the bench. Chillz is a starter, not Marvin Gay Williams.

Based on strength of schedule and player talent, they’re a playoff team. Based on coaching, they are not.
Of course, the same could be said about the 2005 and 2006 Falcons at about the same point in their season.

Unless you can get the 6 seed it doesn’t matter . The scrubby teams battling for the last two playoff spots will get embarrassed by the Celtics or Pistons . That being said ,the Hawks can go 5-15 down the stretch & have a shot at the playoffs . Yes the East is that weak .

The Hawks have the opportunity to win 5 home games and 7 road games.
They will most likely lose at home to Orlando twice, Houston, Toronto and Boston. They could win at home against the LAClippers, Milwaukee, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York.
On the road they will likely lose to Orlando, Washington and Philadelphia while they could win at NY twice, NJ, Chicago, Memphis, Indiana and Miami.
The “coulds” and “shoulds” give them a record of 12-8 over the last 20. So, at least the “could wins” outnumbef the “should losses” but the reality is more likely 9-11 or 8-12 based upon their history.

Hey Doc
If you really had a crystal ball on your desk? - Then you would know that I am a Hot-Chick! Does drmaryb sound like a male name to you?
This seems odd to me because I have never met you in person - but the last time you checked was when?
You think I am a male? I have been called a lot of things but a male is not one of them!
Also, you don’t need to respond to any comments made directly to me - When I have time I can do that myself thank you very much!
And Here I Go!
Hey Glutton For Punishment
In response to your question: I am a primary care physician who specializes in Chiropractic. I work with a great group of dynamic doctors who specialize in everything from Nurtition to Sports Medicine.
My specialty is upper cervical and extremity adjusting. I am the team doctor for a professional football team that travels from CA to FLA in the spring-time. (Womens Professional full contact).
You can google me: Mary Burton DC and I would be highlighted as the #1 listing on the page in Roswell,GA.
Or look to the right margin and you should see my link from Roswell, GA
I played collegiate tennis at the College of Charleston in the early 80’s. My name is Mary Ellen (So I guess I am a female after all)
Here’s my point I am a real person, a hot-chick ;o, with real comments and well thought out entries.
If doc wants me to be a male - maybe it’s because he’s really a closet GAY and want’s something - he can never have? Who knows? But somebody must have told him he was my DADDY - I have found him to be quite judgemental and the jury is still out on DOC for me - anyways!
Back to you though, what does FP stand for?

He keeps suggesting that I am a man, he’s been doin’ that tired old dance with me since day one. I usually ignore him though.
But someone asked who I was and he took it upon himself to respond on my behalf? And suggested that last time he checked I was a male?
I didn’t know he was my Gynecologist? Thank God doc is not a real Prognosticator. (We’d really be in trouble then). Now I have to question his diagnostic skills as well!
He has certainly mis-diagnosed me each and every time.
But hey, I forgive doc he’s just getting old that’s all. He can’t see and hear as well as he used to.

ZAZA QUIT in training camp. When Horford the Beast showed up in practice, ZAZA diappeared. If this was college he probably would have tried to transfer.
ZAZA is quite the dresser I hear, He wears the Hats, the Scarves and the Mittens - pretty dapper heh? I hear he is Casket-Sharp at all times. Pretty interesting stuff considering his dead - play!
I just don’t get ZAZA, I think he’s in love with himself and has no PRIDE when he plays this game - we love so much! I feels he is sulking because Al is making such a splash at his #5 position. Horford makes ZAZA look bad.

Watching this game makes me sick. Woodson stayed in the same defense the whole game. No one contested the 3, and were horrible defending the pick and roll. The NBA is about changing things during the game, and Mike Woodson cant adjust. The offense is there. The coaching the the MAIN thing holding this team back. No playoffs are in sight this year. Get rid of Woodson and get a real coach!!

Hey Richbrave
Where are you baby? They’re tryin’ to ruff’ me up on here. The usual suspects are on the job again! They’re tryin to break us up and they’re callin’ me nasty names.
No offense to you guys but I wouldn’t trade being a woman for nothing in the world. The mascara, lipstick, and thongs - heck I wouldn’t trade the pearls and perfume and being a woman for nothing in the world!
Iam actually known for my love for pearls. I am dripping in cultured pearls earrings and necklaces are my trademarks. Since age three I sleep in them things, go to gym and play sports always wearing pearls.
There’s a joke in my family that if you go to the morgue to ID my body & if it ain’t wearing pearls - It aint me!haha (no dental records neccesary)
Those are just a few of my favorite things. I have three older brothers who are 6’4” , 6’6” and 6’2”. They all played basketball. The 6’6” brother played Pro overseas in Italy for 8 years.
I am only 5’7” but I came to love sports at age four when I became a tennis prodigy. Due to my spinal problems I began seeing a chiropractor at age 5 back in ‘68. I fell in love with this profession and decided to become a chiropractor @ age 7 & never waivered. I am living a dream. Just a little background info on your cyber-sluttress.

the male i was referring to was me as if you remember in context that night ray was saying he didnt need viagra and rich was saying send him some. personally i think he would do better with some adaptogens. i said the last time i looked i was male. do you have a personality that likes fights or is it just that time of the moon cycle?

I came home too late to catch the game so I had to rely on the box score and what you guys are saying. Seems like we left our defense back in the first few games of the season or something. I still dont know how we are allowing this many 3 pointers. We might have given up a record number of 3 pointers the last 5 games or so. I see people Mike Knapp is still not making adjustments. I didn’t know if we could win this game or not but I at least wanted it to be competitve and it doesnt seem like it was. I see Duck did not have a good game was it because he was just bad out there or his minutes?
By BA

Duck is lost, cp. Who could blame him, with Mike Knapp’s middle shcool offensive sets? We need a big, about the size of Pachulia, only he needs to be able to jump, not flop around and scream like monica seles everytime somebody comes in the lane. We have exactly no picks in the draft…A month ago Sekou said they are actually higher in the cap than they have ever been. The best thing available this year in a thin and elderly free agent class is Kurt Thomas. Would he come here? Would they pay him? This guy makes 8 million a year. The next best thing is Ratliff and I’m not opposed to that either. After that, you get into the soft European centers and power forwards. I think we’ve tried that already. If Claxton comes back and they keep Richardson, we have some backcourt depth. But even if none of these guys are considered, I think Horford has done an exceptional job at the five and next year with a real coach he’ll only get better. It doesn’t have to be a starter, but we need some depth down low.

On thing though: Doc is my friend and in the three plus years I’ve been around him here at the Liar’s Table, he’s never once questioned anybody’s sexuality or otherwise resorted to name-calling. You mis-read his post. Period. Was your outburst really necessary? Hell, this is the most peace-loving guy on the board…the comments were off-base, off-the cuff, and off the reservation. That’s just my opinion. Normally this is the part where I let the testosterone surge take over (juvenile, I know…but therapeutic…wait…did I spell that right?). However, seeing as how you’re a lady, I can resist the urge to play the part of the knave and ruffian. Pardon my ardent defense of my friends.
So, you’re into extremity adjustment huh? So am I. But mine is on a case-by-case basis and only as necessary. Sometimes people are in need of that, or cognitive/behavioral adjustment, or perhaps they simply need a change of climate and scenery. I help those who need it to achieve it…free of charge. Well, it’s not me they’re paying when they have to pay….heh heh.

What is with our inability to play defense here lately? We are going to make it into the playoffs for one reason as it stands right now: other teams are simply losing as much or more (i.e. New Jersey). That’s ridiculous.
As I expected, I saw that our guards did rather well on both offense and defense, outperforming theirs with ease. However, from the 3 spot to the 5…we got absolutely hammered.
This is why a center is needed. You don’t put Horford out there by himself as the only “true” post player. Not when the other frontcourt’s shortest guy is 6’10”, and the center is Dwight freakin’ Howard! And Zaza’s just no help. Why am I even bothering to talk about this….I’m looking forward to summer…
