Derrick when will you give us your analysis of the two big games, Wheeler and Norcross, last night?
By Defense King

Norcross held Savannah, who has avg 74 pts during the play offs, to only 54 pts or 20 pts below their avg. tonightNorcross must hold wheeler 20 pts below their avg to 60 pts.

Derrick, I Think i speak for every high school basketball fan in Georgia when i say that Miller Grove falling short to a Fayette team cheated fans out of the biggest day in GA basketball championship history. Miller Grove/ Columbia for the 4A title and then Norcross/Wheeler to follow would have been a fans dream. The best two teams and rilvalry’s n 4A and 5A. I only can dream now.

Dear “Fan” You don’t speak for everyone, just yourself. Please keep overlooking the FCHS Tigers just like everyone else has for the last few rounds. You wanted a dream but I hope the Tigers create a nightmare for you. At this point, winning is the thing. GO TIGERS!

Three In A Row Obviously I’m looking forward to what should be a great game between Wheeler and Norcross. I was telling some others writers on press row that I was getting a little worried about me predicting Wheeler to win, but I’m going to stick with it (sorry Devil Lover and Three In A Row). But obviously Wheeler is going to have to play with more fire and desire than they did against Hiram, and coach Lipscomb let them know it in his postgame talk (don’t know if talk is the right word). In speaking with several Wheeler players they know the magnitude of what’s at stake.
Analysis Wheeler It was obvious they pretty much felt they had the game in hand last night, which speaks for the way they played. But hey they still won by 14 not playing their best. I’ve said several times that is a mark of a good team when they don’t play their best or even close to their best and still win big. I expect it to be turned up a notch tonight. They are talented and pretty deep. Really like Phil Taylor he really makes that team complete. The Wildcats will need for Tahj Tate to step it up tonight.l
Norcross WOW!!! I knew their defense was good, but my goodness. They were can disrupt a team’s gameplan. I really liked their intensity last night. They never let up. Of the games I seen this week at the Gwinnett Arena, Norcross might have been the only team that carried the intensity from start to finish of the game. Even when the game was out of hand and the reserves came in, it was the same. Columbia came out with great intensity against Westlake, but they had some lapses in between, but Norcross there was no let up. They smelled blood and went for the kill.

Hey Derrick…I could not agree with you more. And I understand why you are staying with your perdiction that Wheeler should win because of the apparent talent pool that coach Lipscomb has. However, can we now say that Eddie Martin has a very untique ability to get more out of his players even if they aren’t the most talented than a lot of Georgia coaches?
You know Norcross, because of the physical nature of the Norcross/savannah game, might not be able to keep up the intensity as they did do against Savannah. But if they do, Wheeler will be forced to play a much more up tempo game than I saw last night.
I thought that Norcross’ overall performance throught the first four games of the tournament have been a “consistent execution” of well thoughtout game strategies with averaging 72 pts, giving up only 54 pts with a net margin of 18 pts. But last night against who you said earlier Derrick was an outstanding basketball team/program, Norcross while they dominated in every category, could have played better and scored more points.
It should be an outstanding game tonight and hope both teams are able to bring their “A game” to this match up.
But Derrick, you are also right about something else you said…………

Derrick thank for your honest opinion and analysis. But please explain how a talent well and coached team like wheeler can avg 80 pts a game all season, 80 pts a game during the tournament and then on the biggest game yet, semi finals, this young team only scores 69 pts, show little or no intensity and looked uncertained at times?
By Defense King
March 7, 2008 12:14 PM | Link to this
You are right Derrick…there is blood in the water and we are all smelling it especially the Norcross team and fans. I wonder if the wheeler team know it is their blood that everyone is smelling.
Remember they are suppose to win and we are the underdog, wink!, wink!
By Just Another Championship
March 7, 2008 12:34 PM | Link to this
Hey Derrick. Here is what i think. I think Norcross has learned that they aren’t as gifted offensively so to be effective and win they have to produce a lot of defensive intensity. They then score a lot their pts in transition. While Wheeler appears just the opposite. They are very talented offensively but don’t see a real need for defensive intensity when they are scoring 80 pts or more. so this could be the deciding factor tonight.
If wheeler starts slow on offense and allows Norcross to establish their high level of defensive intensity like savannah did last night, Wheeler could be in for a very tuff night.

underdog: as derrick has stated several times wheeler didnt play great, but they had the game in hand and played an efficient game the rest of the 2nd half…hiram came out smoking hitting several 3 pointers to jump out early…wheeler took the punch, and went on to dominate the 2nd quarter and pretty much put the game out of reach by halftime…wheeler played on cruise control the 2nd half maintaining a consistent double digit lead throughout most of the 2nd half…since most of you norcross fans tend to feed off wheeler trends here is one that i like to note….since the region title game, where they played sub par basketball against centennial, they have come back the next game to dominate and play fantastic basketball. they blew out parkview after centennial, won ugly against McEachern, ran berkmar and top college recruit wes witherspoon outta the gym, and now have played average against hiram. going off that trend i expect wheeler to have their A game tonight…see ya tonight

Underdog Devils It’s hard to explain what goes on with 15, 16 amd 17 year olds. I’m sure they probably took them lightly. Let’s be honest, when you across the court and see Hiram there was not phyiscally impossing about them. Wheeler’s talent and light effort was enough, but tonight as Lipscomb said to his players will not be enough. They will have to match Norcross’ intensity and I’m sure both teams will come with their A-game. If that is the case, then we are all in for a treat.
Where is Devil Lover? He is being really low key lately.

Thanks Paideia for knocking off R-C. Nothing against the kids but I have problem with a coach who’s head is so big that she would brag that laney has no one that could stop her best player and the reason why she left her previous school was to win a championship at another. That program was already built by james bland build your own program.

Saw the second half of Columbia’s win - didn’t surprise me at all after the Semis the other night. Fayette is certainly no slouch, but Columbia was just way too strong. Congrats to the Eagles!!
Am I the only one in Georgia who really could care less about Norcross-Wheeler? If I had my druthers, I’d much rather be in Macon watching the “little” guys play. Class A, AA and AAA ball gets overlooked far too often, especially from schools outside the Metro area. Yeah, I’ll watch some of the AAAAA boys final on the tube (especially since there’s no much of anything else on tonight), and no disrespect to either team, but all the glitz just doesn’t do anything for me.

AJC DUDE No, they don’t look rattled. They just haven’t gone to Al-Farouq enough. Wheeler needs to get the ball into Ari Stewart because he has the height advantage over Zach Lamb. I thought Wheeler would push it more to wear Norcross down because of their lack of depth.

Big up to Dekalb County (except Dunwoody) for Reppin today. We have the poorest facilities but always manage to produce champions. Could you imagine what would happen if we had a school board that seriously invested in Athletics like all the other Counties. We represented in every game today at Gwinnett Arena. Note: Norcross’s Al-Farouq Alminu and Tariq Muhammad are Dekalb County Middle Schools products.

We watched Norcross all year and this is a great team. Everyone played their respective roles on offense and because of that they were a well oiled machine. They played wonderful offense and really shared the ball. There was no chucking on this team. On defense, they played a suffocating man to man defense that controlled tempo. For the first time this year and for one possession they played a zone and Wheeler took advantage. Hat’s off to a well coached Wheeler team to recognize a zone and beat it. That being said this team was better than last year’s Norcross team. They were flat out faster.

Good morning to all especially those who belong to the “Blue Devil Nation” the day after the greatest victories in Blue Devil history. This championship, the third in a row, tied the 1938-1940 record set by Lanier High School who was the last team in Georgia to win three championships in a row in the highest class. Now to thanks those you made it possible.
Thank you Eddie Martin for all that you did especially your leadership, player development and coaching which was mainly responsible for this championship. Thank you Mr. Al-Farouq Aminu for without your hard work and outstanding performance this championship would not have happened. Thank you Taariq Mohammad for all that you did especially your leadership on the court and your passing. Thank you Denzil Jones for all of your points scored especially your three point goals and energy. Thank you AJ Hawkins for doing all of the dirty work under the basket including defense, setting screens and your 10 ft shot…it was like “money in the bank”. Thank you Zack Lamb for coming in late in the season and being the role player that we so desperately needed. And thank you Devil fans, cheer leaders and especially the students who worked so hard all year to give our team the support it deserved and needed. See you all next year.

I must say I am impressed with carver’s run. They have done the same thing Jordan did last year. This does prove how tough 2-AAA is. Jordan won last year and it may very well be Carver this year. Jordan can say one thing in going 27-2. The only teams they lost to was Carver and Glenn Hills and you see where they’re at. I’m tired of hearing about metro Atlanta teams. Congrads to Kendrick girls as well. They are going to finally get that state title that has slipped through they’re hands in the past. Columbus teams could sweep 2-AAA state titles. How bout that!!! I think derrick for giving us respect all year. Jordan is still the best they just had a tougher road in the year of many upsets. Sometimes the best team doesn’t win. I watched that Norcross vs Wheeler game ans it was a classic. I commend Wheeler for fighting back after being down 17-2. A lot of teams might of folded under the pressure. The game could have went either way. It would be nice to see those two teams in a seven game series. The Columbia fayette county game was also fun to watch. You don’t have to have your team in the state finals to enjoy watching the games. Gptv does a great job with the broadcast. Well lets get ready for another exciting day of games.

Congrats to Carver. They put my Dwoody team to shame. Carver is strong, quick, and played like they really wanted it. I’d love to see the rebounding stats and the free throw stats. Carver played great fundamental basketball, and Dunwoody never recovered from the punch in the they took in the first quarter. Add in the mental meltdown of Singleton, who has talent but one of the lower basketball IQ’s you will ever see, and the antics of DramaQueen Delwan Graham, whose technical cost Dunwoody it’s only real run, and Dwood was toast. Maybe Coach Bracco should start teaching Defense instead of Drama.

I watached the game between Hancock Central vs Turner County.
I just say that both teams did an excellent job and no one should be unhappy about the outcome.

Derrick, How can you say Norcross doesn’t have depth?! Tariq=Junior, Zach Lamb=Junior, Denzail Jones=Junior. Our JV and Freshman boys won their tounaments. With Coach Hembree now coaching the girls, they will be contenders within 2 years. Show some respect for a good program.

I am so sick and tired of the Gwinnett Arena. I am always perplexed with the fact that white kids are able to have fun while black kids are monitered by numerous security guards. White kids make up degrading and over the top chants. They also jump up and down on the plexy glass which is clearly something that the black kids can not do. If three or more black kids congregate and try and do the same it results in them being told to sit down. Someone please chime in on this conversation.

Glenn Hills swept every team in the state of Georgia this year. Their two losses occurred to out of state opponents. The AJC needs to cover the schools in the Augusta area more when they make it this deep into the playoffs. Augusta is the basketball capital of Georgia. :-D

DEVIL LOVER.. YEAH MAN… I WAS @ THE WHEELER/NORCROSS GAME..ITS FUNNY U REMEMBERED ME SAYIN SAY I WOULDNT GO TO ANOTHER PLAYOFF GAME UNLESS THOSE 2 MATCHED UP.LOL. BUT YEAH IT WAS A GOOD GAME. I ACTUALLY THOUGHT WHEELER WAS GONNA WIN BY 10 OR MORE..I THOUGHT THEIR BACK COURT WOULD DOMINATE. BUT I MUST SAY.. NORCROSS REALLY IMPRESSED ME..THEY’RE A GOOD TEAM..I LIKE TARIQ MUHAMMED…. AND I KNEW AMINU WAS GOOD BUT I DIDNT KNOW HE HAD GUARD SKILLS, I THOUGHT HE WAS MORE OF A 4, THAN A 3 OR 2.. IF HE IMPROVES HIS HANDLE AND PERIMETER DEFENSE HE’S A TMAC OR LEBRON TYPE PLAYER.. I THINK WAKE FOREST LUCKED UP BC HE COULDVE BEEN AT DUKE OR UNC.
IM STILL HURT FROMSOUTH ATLANTALOSING THO.. I GOT MY LIL BRO IN THE GYM EVERYDAY NOW.. HE’LL BE ONE OF THE TOP PGs NEXT YEAR.. HIM AND D.FAVORS ARE GONNA RAIN TERROR NEXT SEASON.
ONE THING THO.. THAT PG PHIL TAYLOR FROM WHEELER IS GONNA BE INCREDIBLE BY HIS SENIOR SEASON.. I CANT BELIEVE HE’S ONLY A SOPHOMORE.. HE REMINDS ME OF CHRIS PAUL.

I must stand corrected….two outstanding teams, obviously the best in the state, Wheeler got a little wild in the first half, shooting 3’s at random, got out of their offense, and could neveer quite make up for the devastating 15 point deficit early. Whereas Norcross stayed within a tighter offensive set, and played with great poise in the face of the onslaught. Game well played, title well earned by Norcross.

I AM GOING TO ASK MARTIN TO TRY AND SCHEDULE A PRACTICE GAME WITH SOUTHATLANTA MAYBE THIS SUMMER.
GOOD LUCK TILL NEXT YEAR.

Glenn Hills won but they were not the best team in AAA by far. I saw a lot of teams play including them. They play good interior defense and they get a tremendous advantage at the free throw line where they do most of they’re scoring. I still say Jordan was a better team than Glenn Hills they just got all the breaks referee wise in the game between the two teams. I have not seen too many games where the opponent takes 3 free throws to 21 in a game and never gets to the bonus the entire game. The referees were intimidated in the Jordan Glenn Hills game bt the crowd and the atmosphere. The students ranted cuss words the whole game and the refs were too busy talking too the fans during the game. It was ashame that those were the best officials the state could find during playoff time. Jordan still almost overcame all that to win there. Call me a whiner it doesn’t matter. I know the best team didn’t win AAA. Jordan Beat that same Carver team by 15,20,and 12 points. The game we lost to Carver we were up by 12 before collasping late. It was a weird year where the unexpected happened every round of the playoffs. I do give you respect Glenn Hills for one thing. You did what you had to do.

No one remembers the runner ups Mr. Chris Grammer. If Jordan was the best team in Class AAA, they would have won the championship. The best team won… hands down. Did we not beat Jordan in the 2nd Round? We beat two #1 seeds in the tournament and we beat your best team. Overall, we beat two #1 seeds, we beat a #2, a #3, and a #4 seed. You should have read the memo below.
Glenn Hills 24-2 Region 3 tournament champions Wins against playoff teams: Josey 64-53, Richmond Academy 75-60, Laney 67-52, Laney 69-52, Washington County 43-40, Thomson 76-64, Richmond Academy 80-70, Washington County 40-37, Washington County 58-48, Liberty County 49-39 Notable losses: None. Notes: The top team from the Augusta area should not be slept on. Why should they? The team has yet to lose to a state opponent all year long. The Division I bound trio of Chris Reynolds (Campbell), Jerel Stephenson (UNC Wilmington) and Reggie Middleton (Winthrop) are a tough group to deal with. The Spartans are hoping to redeem themselves from last year’s early departure in the state tournament. This is a dangerous, dangerous, dangerous team. Watch out for them.

Are you kidding me” what the Hell happen here Dunwoody you had FIVE D one player On your squad a young player who has proven time and time again that he had what it took To sustain this squad and take home the victory, but what he needed was support from your All American Singleton and Delwon instead they choose not to show the h up, I overheard one of the parents of the Senior that he son had two rings already and that she was good, give me a break that is call SELFISH” The all American is going to Florida and when he gets there if he continues to play like he does he will be in For a rude awaking Mr Delwon who acted like a fool and played like one is also going to see the bench and will be sitting on It unless he can control his outrageous and uncontrolled actions, I also blame the coach for not holding These boys accountable all season and for allowing them to run wild, doing whatever they wanted to And it the end they prove that the all American was not the senior but a Young Buck Grayson that took it up on Himself to carry the team and faced and stood firm to those football players at Carver.
We solute you Grayson for a Job well done you have proven that it take heart, dedication and talent To show us the fan what fools we had been to stand by those seniors that let us down.

BJ your response to Dunwwody loosing by 7 is not impressive, they lost because Singleton all American and Delwan the Drama Queen could not performthey are certainly not the men for this job and there coach made a bad judgement by not putting in somone off the bench who could have made a difference and help Grayson all he needed was somone man enough to stand up to Carver boys. No body stood up except Grayson and Pierre tried is best and that is not acceptable since he was th Point guard and the so call leader. We need men who can stand “do you all have anyone else beside these fools. you all lost the champtionship because of them.
