Hey, gang … switched over to start a new thread for tonight’s games.

Early girls updates:

In AAAAA, Duluth started out hot, while Redan was ice cold. The upstart Wildcats from Gwinnett led by 10 at the end of one.

In AA, Randolph-Clay and Paideia are in a close one, with RC clinging to a four-point lead at half.

By AJC'S LARRY HARTSTEIN

March 6, 2008 4:36 PM | Link to this

In AAAAA, Redan closed out the half on a 12-0 run, thanks to 16 points from diminutive point guard Alisha Andrews. But Duluth still leads, 27-25 at half. Mykala Walker leads Duluth with seven.

By AJC's Jeff Haws

March 6, 2008 4:50 PM | Link to this

Paideia’s girls are still handling R-C, up 29-26 late in the third.

By AJC's Jeff Haws

March 6, 2008 5:05 PM | Link to this

Paideia is holding off R-C at this point. The Red Devils are getting hammered on the inside. If Paideia hadn’t missed so many layups, they’d be up by double figures right now. But R-C is still in it, down 41-38 with 3:20 left. Looks like it’ll come down to the end.

By AJC'S LARRY HARTSTEIN

March 6, 2008 5:16 PM | Link to this

Redan leads Duluth by 4 with 1:16 to play.

It’s over in Gwinnett. Redan advances to the AAAAA girls championship game with a 62-50 win over Duluth.

By Derrick Mahone

March 6, 2008 5:45 PM | Link to this

Redan’s Alisha Andrews was the big difference. She scored 28 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, had seven steals and two assists. By the way, she is only 5-foot-2.

Paideia wins! They had a seven-point lead with 27 seconds in regulation and let R-C tie it up somehow. They kept it together and won in OT. How about those Lady Pythons? Wow.

Wheeler 31, Hiram 26: DeQuan Jones two-handed dunk on Justin Garner of Hiram and was fouled to complete three-point play. Jones baseline two-handed dunk. 2:48 remaining in 2nd quarter.

Karen It is a case of Wheeler not going to their strength. Too many jumpshots when they definitely have a greater height advantage. They are also missing some pretty easy shots.

Thompkins is dominating down low for Wesleyan. I haven’t been counting, but I’d say he has at least a half-dozen blocks at the half. For Dublin to win, they’re gonna have to out-quick Wesleyan and start making some perimeter buckets, I think. It’s 28-20 Wesleyan early in the second half, and Thompkins just got his second foul.

They are starting to pick it up some. They are getting just about all the defensive rebounds. DeQuan Jones reverse alley oop dunk (didn’t catch who threw it).

By Anthony

March 6, 2008 6:44 PM | Link to this

10 points is alot for Hiram to overcome. Their effort throughout this season has been tremendous though.

By Derrick Mahone

Wheeler 66, Hiram 51 It could be worst, but Wheeler is just toying with them. 1:03 left.

By Loner

March 6, 2008 6:52 PM | Link to this

This typical of the wheeler game we have class not to cause a blowout. We know the underdog story with Hiram and don’t want to rain on anyones parade.

By Anthony

March 6, 2008 6:53 PM | Link to this

Hiram’s tallest player is 6’4. I knew that would catch up to them eventually. That appears to be the case today.

By Derrick Mahone

March 6, 2008 6:53 PM | Link to this

**Wheeler 68, Hiram 54: FINAL 19 points. Richard Howell 22 points. The game wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Wheeler slowed down the last three minutes. You could just see the confidence in the Wheeler players face before tipoff like that had this one won.

By Anthony

March 6, 2008 7:02 PM | Link to this

Apparently, Hiram caught them by surprise early in the game when they lead Wheeler 19-12 after 1 quarter. Wheeler definitely has superior talent though. The championship will be good.

Stephenson 10, Mill Creek 10 END OF FIRST QUARTER

By AJC's Jeff Haws

March 6, 2008 7:36 PM | Link to this

Wesleyan handled Dublin pretty well, winning 56-44. Thompkins was a beast inside. Right now in Macon, Wesleyan’s girls have started out pretty well, but Savannah Christian has hung in there to this point. SC just hit a shot, and Wesleyan missed a layup. It’s 13-9 Wesleyan with 2:00 left in the 1st.

Stephenson 20, Mill Creek 20 HALFTIME

By AJC DUDE

March 6, 2008 7:47 PM | Link to this

We’re all knotted up at half: Mill Creek 20, Stephenson 20.

Porsha Porter has 10 points and six steals to lead MIll Creek. Stephenson’s Taylor Turnbow, an LSU signee, has five points, eight boards.

Mill Creek’s starting forward Olivia Towers-Solice injured and could be out for the rest of the game.

By AJC DUDE

March 6, 2008 8:07 PM | Link to this

Mill Creek explodes to open a 42-34 lead over Stephenson heading into the fourth quarter.

By AJC's Jeff Haws

March 6, 2008 8:19 PM | Link to this

Wesleyan’s girls are cruising, much like their male counterparts. They’re up 58-37 with 3:20 left in the third. They don’t look like they’ll have to sweat this one out. Anne Marie Armstrong had 16 points in the second quarter alone.

By AJC DUDE

Stephenson rallies back, leads 57-51 with 1:24 to play

By AJC DUDE

March 6, 2008 8:31 PM | Link to this

It’s over in AAAAA girls. Stephenson is marching on, after pulling away from Mill Creek in the fourth quarter. The Jags, who knocked off MIll Creek 66-51, advance to face Redan in title game.

By Derrick Mahone

March 6, 2008 8:35 PM | Link to this

WHAT A COMEBACK!!!! Stephenson 66, Mill Creek 51** The state championship can be played on Rockbridge Road. It’s an all-DeKalb final. Stephenson was down 46-40 late in the four quarter and turned nine Mill Creek turnovers into points.

By AJC DUDE

March 6, 2008 8:38 PM | Link to this

Stephenson’s Jylsa Williams scored 17 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Jags overcome an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit.

By AJC's Jeff Haws

March 6, 2008 8:44 PM | Link to this

If I had to guess, I’d say Anne Marie Armstrong has scored about 79 points in this game. Of course, I’ve never been too good at guessing. Wesleyan is cruising down the stretch, up 79-58 with 2:20 left.

Hey Derrick…you are right about No.1 vs no.2 the only problem is you still have it wrong. Norcross is no.1 and Wheeler is no.2. Based upon how both teams played tonight.

Derrick tell me the truth, is that Wheeler’s normal type of play. I came until to be impressed by Wheeler and I was more impressed by the Stephensen Girl’s team than with Wheeler. What was that all about?

Based on the way Wheeler played tonight, I would be embarrassed if I was in the Wheeler Nation. 4 or 6 D-1s and with no energy made an average team, Hiram ,look pretty good.

See you guys tomorrow night and I hope the Wheeler team doesn’t wake up before Saturday.

Who in Wheeler Nation said that Norcross only had two shooters and if Aminu was shut down Norcross would lose? Well Aminu only got 8 and Norcross bettered their scoring avg by 7pts. Probably the lowest pt total for Aminu this yr.

We want Wheeler now!!!!

HEY SOTY. I KNOW YOU WENT TO THE TWO GAMES TONIGHT. TELL ME THE TRUTH, WHAT DID YOU SEE?

By Phildawg

March 7, 2008 12:12 AM | Link to this

I’m pretty sure that comment was made in reference to Aminu getting shut down against an equally/superior talented team such as Wheeler. He will have to have a monster game tomorrow night for it to be a good game. Outside of Aminu, Wheeler is the more athletic team and will be able to match up and guard Norcross better than anyone else this year. As far as the semifinal games, Savannah must have played their worst game of the year this year because they didn’t even look like a top 20 team. They were talked about as a perimeter shooting team but they couldn’t hit the side of a barn from out there and most of their 3-point shots were wide open. Hiram on the other hand was nailing shots from the outside, especially their #14 all night long with hands in his face. Wheeler consistently comes out pretty slow, then picks it up to pull away and then puts in the 2nd string and coasts. Trust me, that won’t happen tomorrow night because they realize the magnitude of playing in the championship game. Plenty of room for Wheeler to step it up tomorrow night and I fully expect them to do just that. Gonna be a great game, one for the ages.
