Favre says goodbye to NFL

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has called it quits after a 17-year career in the NFL - a career that will almost assuredly land him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. (See story).

Favre has flirted with retirement before, but this time it’s serious. And now that one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history appears to be walking away, there’s the burning question for most Falcons fans - what if he had played his entire career in Atlanta?

The 1991 second-round pick out of Southern Miss was traded north after only one season with the Falcons and later blossomed into a three-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion and the owner of several league records, including career TD passes.

What might’ve happened to the Falcons if Favre remained in Atlanta? And what are your thoughts on the career of the player likely headed to the Hall of Fame?

Check out the reaction of Favre’s news in Milwaukee and let us know what you think.

Well, you knew it was going to happen someday. I thought he was going to get a victory lap this year, though.

And, uh, he’s going in as a Packer.

Favre’s annual flirtation with retirement has become as tiresome as seeing Jack Nicholson sitting in the same seat every year at the Oscars. Enuff already!! Retire, go to Mexico, get a tattoo, come back and then join ESPN as a commentator. Please move on and stop acting as if you are bigger than the sport itself.

A sad day in Wisconsin. I am sure people will have to drown out the misery or no Brett Favre with a lot of beer and brats. Thanks for the memories. Back to the days of Lynne Dickey and horrible Packer teams.

Favre will go down in history as one of the top 5 QBs of all time. The Monday Night game vs Oakland will go down as one of the best single games, especially since his dad just died! Class Act all the way! Will raise my son to play the way he played! There’s a tear in my beer crying for you Ole #4!

So what’s the point of wondering about how things might have turned out if Favre had never left Atlanta? Who knows, he might have stepped in front of the team bus the next day for Christ sake. Instead, why don’t you solicit comments on something practical like maybe building a Way Back Machine and sending someone back in time to stop Michael Vick from buying that first dog.

What could have been? That’s all Falcon’s fans can say as they look back at the fabulous career Favre had in Green Bay. Could the Falcon’s have had great season as the Packers did? How many years the Falcon’s went having a mediocre or terrible QB to run the show. I think Favre has been a class act throughout his career in Green Bay and I wish him the best in life. He will be missed by all who played the game with him as well as all who followed his game. I know the Cheese Heads in Wisconsin are drowning away in their tears. They have lost a leader and an icon. It will be different not seeing #4 leading the Packers. I guess we need to get used to Aaron Rogers for the years to come.

It was refreshing to see Farve play. He played for the love of the game and never forgot his roots and where he came from.

don’t forget- he also went to UGA and we did not give him any playing time and so he transferred. Our whole state f*ed it up! Love you Brett- wish you could have been our quarterback. Even with braces you are dreamy

Let’s be real.If Favre had stayed in Atlanta his career would have been done long ago from being beaten to death playing for inept Falcons teams. He became who he is because he went to Green Bay.

After reading the Sports Illustrated “Man of the year” award issue, Brett Farve is much more than just a great quarterback. What a complete human being all the way around. I agree with timon, if Brett Farve had played here in Atlanta, his career would have been much shorter.

Maybe now we can stop whining about the Favre trade. Maybe.

Vasily D’Efferins, I must congratulate you, since you are the only AJC blog poster who has a better user name than me.

He will definitely be missed. He’s my favorite player of all time and he was not only a great athlete, but also a great person. I’ll still be wearing my cheesehead and #4 jersey every Sunday… hopefully they’ll get another quarterback that can become as great as him. He will definitely go into the Hall of Fame as a Packer. Go #4! Enjoy your time off :).

I think we would have NEVER heard of Favre if he stayed with Atlanta back then with the inept ownership we had then, but who knows? All I do is Favre was an inspiration to all who love NFL football. He played the game like it was the thrill of his life. He mostly showed respect to everyone and is a true warrior. Even though he didn’t stay a Falcon, my hats off to one of the best that ever done it. The NFL just lost a great one there 4 real. Where ever you end up Mr. “Favv-a-ra” it has been MORE than a pleasure. Wish they could clone your azz.

As a fellow cheesehead living in Atlanta I am truly going to miss Brett. I applaud his efforts to continue on after his father passed. It’s been fun and it was a GREAT season to go out on….Class act…

Arthur Blank owes Brett Favre, big-time. Thanks to Favre, Michael Vick will never be more than the second-worst mistake the Falcons have ever made.

I seriously doubt Favre regrets leaving Atlanta one bit. He’s one tough old boot, Favre is. Best of luck Favre, you are a TRUE role model.

Anybody hear John Kincaid from 680 trying to rain on Favre’s parade? What an idiot. What’ the matter, John? Jealous? Jealous because your Philadelphia Eagles haven’t won a Super Bowl? Or jealous because McNabb couldn’t hold Favre’s jock? Or is it just a p** NFL experience for you, being that the NFC East is home to eleven Super Bowl rings, of which NONE belong to Philadelphia? Get over yourself, Kincaid, what you know about NFL quarterbacks couldn’t fill an ants crack…

I am a cheesehead that moved to Atl in 2000. I was stunned today. I shed tears for all the great memories. We owe a million thanks to Ron Wolf. As GM for the Jets in 91, he tried to draft Favre but Atl got ahead of him. When Wolf left the Jets the following year to go to Green Bay, he never forgot about Favre. Wolf was responsible for hiring Coach Holgram, signing Reggie White and getting Favre from Atl all in the same year. The rest is history.

I don’t just measure a player on the field. How he handle adversity off the field is just one of the many reasons we love Brett. He has been through so much & always excelled! I have too many memories to name. He will truly be missed!

Holla at me when you see my Packers tire cover.

Favre would still be a falcon if not for glandville. Favre used to stay out all night drunk and raiseing hell nights before games and that p**’ed glandville to no end. glandville could not control him so he traded him.
