Your thoughts on Dunn’s release

The handwriting was on the wall after the Falcons signed free agent Michael Turner, and today the Falcons released veteran running back Warrick Dunn.

Dunn was a huge fan favorite. He rushed for over 1,000 yards three times with the Falcons, and at the same time was the franchise’s most civic-minded player.

What’s your reaction to Dunn’s release?

I hate to see Dunn leave the falcons. He has been a productive player and a good, mature, responsible gentleman - polar opposite of Falcons like Vick and Meangelo. I would like to see the league and players union allow each team to have maybe two veterans with at least 5 years with the team to NOT count against the salary cap. This would help some fans as we could have some players identified the the team longterm. I remember how silly Joe Montana looked in a Chiefs uniform.

finally! anythings better than warrick (WELL) dunn. he had obviously lost a step, and when we needed that big 3rd and 1 run he was garunteed to loose 1 or more yards good riddens.

good luck playing for someone else!

Like I said in my vent, there’s always an opening for Dunn to teach other sports stars how to be a man. He has character coming out of every pore of his body and other sports figures have enough that you can fit on the tip of your little finger. You will be missed!

What a class act. Life dealt him some hard blows early on and he didn’t get bitter. He used his talent not only to help his family, which needed him, but other families as well, without developing an attitude. Warrick Dunn should be remembered as more than just a good football player…He is a good man.

What a fine young man who set an example of what it means to give back to your community, much more than most professional athletes than I have heard of. Warrick Dunn showed us how to conduct yourself not only as a professional football player, but as a human being as well.

I liked Dunn also, but this is business and maybe this is a sign that Blank has turned over the operation to soneone who has some football sense, unlike when Blank gave Vick all of that money, I am sure Blank wish he had that to do over.

More than anything else, he has been a good leader of this team, a good face for this franchise. He has been intimately involved with the local community and has earned the love and admiration of blacks and whites (and others) alike. I wish him all the best and a big thank you for his services!

Warrick Dunn is a great player and human being.

No one works as hard and plays with so much heart as this man.

He will be missed.

He has done so much for communities and the league. When Katrina hit, he was the first player (not Deon) to say that every player should donate $5,000 to relief efforts.

He was the falcons leading rusher for 4 years straight behind an ok line and you cannot say that for many people.

I wish him the best and I will continue to cheer for him where ever he goes.

And next season, when Warrick Dunn reaches over 1,000 yards rushing…our idiot AJC columnist will have to eat their words. I really liked Dunn alot, but his skills were reaching diminishing points of no return. I could tell last year when Dunn was having trouble scoring from inside the 5 yard line that his skills were eroding, but I still felt that he still had a lot of gas left in the tank. If Warwick never plays again, Warwick should be enshrined in footballs Hall of Fame for his immaculate track record with Tampa and Atlanta. Warwick is a model citizen, a good soldier and an extraordinary warrior on the football field. Warwick will be missed but never forgotten.

I think Warwicks departure can be blamed on Michael Vick for if Vick had been available for this past season and the Falcons had won the superbowl instead of the Giants, Warwick would probably still be a Falcon and perhaps a Falcon for life. At least Arthur Blank softened the blow for Dunn by saying that Warwick Dunn will always be thought of as a Falcon. Warwick deserved a better fate than than the rotten deal he got by being a Falcon.

I’m from Baton Rouge, LA. and went to the same high school as Warrick Dunn. He has truly shown what a professional athlete can be and should be a prime example of how much good someone can do for others. I hate to see him go bec. he is definitely a good hearted person and the community service he does (with Habitat for Humanity here and in Baton Rouge) and other charity work, is awesome. The Falcons needed to be gutted and in true Falcon fashion we get rid of one of the good guys and still have someone like Me-angelo hanging around… Watch, Falcons will pick McFadden who will promptly get into trouble, get suspended and then we are all in the same boat again. I am a Carolina Panthers fan, but You do not need to be a fan of a particluar team to respect what someone does on the field and off. Warrick Dunn is by far one of the classest players with good moral character and the highest intergity.

I have alot of respect for him as a human being, a black man, and a football player.

I wish the league and the media do more stories on someone of his statue and character to show that there are decent team players in this league instead of hyping up players like T. Owens and all of the negative things that go on around the league.

I hope you continue your career somewhere in the NFL. If the Falcons wanted to rebuild their reputation, they just let the best person to be the face of the franchise go.

We all loved Warrick, but this had to happen. Anyone who watched the team last year knew we needed a power running game. We already have our speed-back in Norwood. Sadly, I can’t remember a RB less effective than Dunn was last season. Snelling showed more promise at times. Turner is the right guy (power + speed). And a character guy too, from all published reports. Warrick will be missed for his character more than his skills these past few years.

It’s refreshing to see so many people praising Dunn’s good works and professional behavior. He truly sets a higher standard for every player in an age of Vicks and others who engage in misbehavior and criminal acts. As for those who think Dunn’s past his prime, consider this… The same was said about Jerome Bettis. Today he’s wearing a Super Bowl ring. Mr. Dunn, if you never get such a ring (although I pray you do!) you’re a champion in a much more important contest…LIFE!

There are HUGE differences between Bettis and Dunn. Warrick was always undersized. It’s amazing his career lasted so long. The Falcons need a back who runs through people, can take a hit, and keep on going. We’re not going to fix all the O line problems with one draft.

Warrick was always that bright spot on the team regardless how bad the falcons were doing. I admired him as a man and respected his accomplishments on the field. He was the reason I continued to renew my season tickets. I am not so sure that i want to. The deal with Michael Turner made sense but I would have liked to have seen the falcon’s restructure his contract so that he could retire as a falcon. But hey, they seem to do nothing right these days. I am hearing he could end back up with Tony Dungy!!! That would be great to end his career with a superbowl!!! He deserves it. The Falcons are finally building a team the right way. Now lets draft the OT from Michigan and play some smash mouth football!!! Let overpower our opponent and run it down their throats!! All of these moves are EXCELLENT!!! Should have been done a long time ago.

In a season of crass, crap, and cluelessness, this man was one of the class acts of this team, indeed of the league. The business decision of making a change is understandable, but we will surely miss the man. Dunn, you have been someone for us to look up to and I thank you. Sure hope we won’t see you on the other sideline. Best regards and good luck!

I thought that Warrwick Dunn was one of the BEST runners in Falcons history. I know that Gerald Riggs, William Andrews and Jamaal Anderson were spectacular, but Warrwick was MORE productive than ANY of those and I think Warricks body of work in the NFL compares favorably to the all-time greats, namely Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, Orenthal James Simpson (murderer), Marshal Faulk, Barry Sanders, Tony Dorsett and Marcus Allen. Warwick stands tall amongst the giants of the NFL. Warwicks career was medium rare, it was Warwick (WELL) Dunn.

The Falcons should have found a place for Dunn in the front office! What a class act and I will miss him terribly. Any team will be fortunate to have him, both on and off of the field!

Too bad baseball can’t cut contracted players like football can. Imagine the cash the Braves would have for free agents if they cut loose Hampton a couple of seasons and $30 million ago.

The NFL needs more people like Warrick Dunn. That said this is one of the most pure business sectors there is in our economcy. It’s about contracts, salaries, and team results. The Falcons appear to be cleaning house due to the drop in their total productivity the last few years. Change will probably be good for everyone involved including the Veterans who still have some good years left and may want to play for a contender now verse wait the the two or three years that a total rebuilding will take to be competitive according to the consensus. There are many teams who need a Crumpler and Dunn in the NFL. The Falcons though have a couple of more hard decisions to make in regards to a couple of their veterans. So far I like the decisiveness of this new team. I’m sure mistakes will be made but then again if they are hopefully they will correct them sooner rather than later. Change in the Falcons case is probably a good thing. Let’s wish Dunn the best as he deserves it.

Looked up “class act” in the dictionary and there was a picture of Warrick. If the Falcon front office has any class, they will hire him in some capacity.

Warwick is such a class guy and a stellar citizen in the community. In fact, the NFL should change the humanitarian award and call it the Warwick Dunn Award. Warwick was truly a rare athlete, which showed that he was medium rare and well Dunn at the same time.

Definitely a well respected player and a fan favorite. Sorry to see him leave, but he was starting to lose his game a little…but some of his issues were due to the OL. But we are a rebuilding team and need to get younger players rather than the aging ones. This was a good move. Good luck to you Warrick.

Glad to see falcons make a move to better the team. Dunns fooball days are a thing of the past.I think the team based on cuts made so far are right on target but they still have to cut some more dead weight like Brooking and D Hall.Good job who evers making the calls.

Like most people who are fans of football I become a fan of certain players. Warrick Dunn is one such player. I like his athletic ability from the first time he walked on to the field for FSU. When he turned pro I became a fan of the man that played pro football. He is the type of person that everyone on any team should be. I will miss watching him srt for the Falcons on Sundays. I feel that other people deserved to be cut long before Warrick(DeAngelo Hall). However, I am just a fan not management.

Warrick, you are THE PRIME example of a person young kids should look up to to emulate. We will miss you, but we know you will be successful wherever you go, or whatever you choose to do. Your mother would be proud of how you are the class act of the NFL. Godspeed, and thanks for the memories!

Warrick will be sorely missed in this city by me. I feel like he still has “some play” left and could have made a positive contribution to the team. He’s one of the few good men in the NFL.

Warrick Dunn is gone from the Falcons now but his impact here, both as a player and as a wonderful human being, will be felt for a very long time. His kindness, his concern for his fellow human being and his powerful ability to translate that into action that changed lives will never be forgotten. Everyone knows that but what you may not know is that his personal life has been touched by what might have been tragedy and it’s been turned into triumph. He’s never talked about his own trials but, believe me, he’s had them. Don’t bet against him going somewhere and contributing to a team either. He’s a guy with determination and he wants to show that this past, lost season had nothing to do with his skills being diminished. Good luck! God bless Warrick Dunn!

Humble, Resilient, Tenacious, Fighter, Gentleman, Humanitarian, a fine example of true manhood.

Warrick Dunn embodies all of the above qualities. And even when it was difficult for fans to cheer for the team, it was always easy to cheer for Dunn. He gave his all in every play. I am still amazed how he scrambled and took the pilings of guys twice his size and bigger on almost every play, but was able snap back up to his feet to march on. You made Atlanta proud Warrick. You made me proud to be a Falcons fan. You have made your dearly departed mother and family proud of the man that you are. All the good things you have done with your celebrity to help those less fortunate is an example to us all. You, sir, will always have my support and I will always be a fan. God bless you and may you life be filled with continued success.

GEEEEEZ! Some of you guys are over doing it a little bit with the warrick dunn praise. Dunn helped one mother per year get a house and he only made a small down payment. True, he was a good guy off the field. However, his football skills were in serious decline and he had a high salary this coming season that could not be justified. He wasn’t a great vocal leader inside the locker room, more of a quite type leader. When the team imploded this season Dunn didn’t make any positive impact on the field or in the locker room. His replacement is seven years younger and said to be a high character guy with a much needed powerful running style. This is a great tradeoff for the falcons. The NFL is a shrewd business and teams can’t afford to keep aging players around just because they behave off the field and contribute to charity.

Warrick was a class act on a team that lacked peers at his level of maturity. Its unfortunate that his demeanor didn’t rub off on the franchise quarterback. He’ll be missed on the field and most certainly in the community.

I’m very excited about Mike Turner coming to the ‘Birds, though. Having Turner and Norwood in the backfield takes some heat off whomever the QB will be, and also takes a bit of emphasis off improving the offensive line (though we still need to upgrade there, for sure).

An improved running game makes the pass game better, and improves our defense, too. Sure makes the draft that much more interesting for us, for sure.

As a side note, I think this also keeps the potential of having a kid like Darren McFadden in Atlanta potentially finding trouble. He’s a kid with plenty on his plate already, personally, and the trappings of Atlanta socializing could derail the guy from having a seriously strong NFL career. He needs to be somewhere where being a young star athlete doesn’t garner him undue attention from unsavory people.

Warrick had a great run here in the ATL and should be grateful for the experience. He wouldn’t even be close to running for 10,000 yards if he was playing for us the past 5 years. Best of luck to him.

Can’t wait to finally see the Falcons with a traditional power running game. It’s gonna be very exciting to see Ovie blasting open holes for the “Burner” Turner to run downhill and crunch the opposing LB’s, S, and DB’s.

Dunn was a great character guy. But let’s face the facts the NFL is not just based on good guys. Dunn has been done for a while. If it had not been for Vick being such a great runner and the defense having to focus on Vick’s ability Dunn would have never got the yards that he did.

I’ll miss Warrick as I missed William Andrews. Two of the most gifted athletes ever to wear a Falcons uni, two of THE greatest people, period.

Warrick knows the coming system is not compatible to a runner his size. He runs as powerfully as a MUCH bigger back, but age-wise he’s better off in an offense that doesn’t depend on blasting up the middle more times than not.

I’ve longed for the return of smashmouth football! I love watching a big back with ability to consistently plow over linebackers and DBs. Gives me much more of a thrill than some skinny-azz receiver outrunning the field for a TD.

GREAT to have Turner!!

Warwick Dunn is a class act on the field and nothing short of a Giant off the field. Wherever he goes he will bring his very best and the community in which he is involved will benefit greatly. I am not a Falcons fan, not really a football fan, but have watched through the AJC the contributions Warwick Dunn has made to both team and community and I just wished all pro athletes measured up to his caliper!

God Bless You Mr. Dunn and I know you will shine wherever you go!

Great guy!! This man helped women with virtually no chance of ownership to find quality housing. As long as they give him the ceremonial “1 day contract” at the end of his career, The Falcons are still a class act. Also, to you losers hitting the DeAngelo, Crump and Vick band wagons- Ignorance is what Bigots have in common… and the fact their mothers are their cousins!

There was no classier guy that Warrick. He team leadership and great work in the community is gonna be dearly missed. I understand were the organization is going. I think he suffered last year from the absence of Vick, because it is not like we had a very dominating offensive line. With him not being a power back, it showed in his game. I wish Warrick the best and hopes he get a chance at the Super Bowl in the future.

I love Warrick Dunn and wish him all the best!! I will still wear my #28 jersey with pride. I hope that some of the new players will have the kind of character that Warrick does. He is a great role model and is a true sportsman. I wish that players were rewarded for their spirit and heart in addition to their skill and speed. I actually named my dog after him a year and a half ago because I respect him for what he’s been able to do on and off of the field. You’ll always have a fan in me, Warrick!!!

Now that all my favorite players have left the falcons..maybe I can justify spending that buck sixty on the NFL ticket. At least the odds of supporting a winning team will be greatly increased. As for the Falcons, they are now in the same league as the Hawks. Yeap I see a lot of blackouts next season.
