Can UGA go undefeated?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Plenty of pollsters have Georgia No. 1 on their college football ballots heading into the fall. But can the Bulldogs stay there from start to finish? Five experts weigh in:
Matt Hayes, Sporting News. Short answer: No. But does it really matter? Considering an SEC team has made it to the national title game the past two years with at least one loss, why can’t the Dogs make it three in a row?
Bret Bloomquist, AP Top 25 voter/El Paso (Texas) Times. Sure, Georgia can go undefeated, though that’s never the way to bet for any SEC team. At LSU and at Auburn obviously stand out as the roadblocks.
Dick Bestwick, Harris poll voter. I felt Georgia had the quality and quantity of personnel to beat everyone in 2007 and feel even more certain about that this year. With this schedule, the most difficult schedule I’ve seen in my 60-plus years of watching this business, winning all 13 games would be a feat of uncommon occurrence.
Dennis Dodd, CBS Sportsline. Preseason No. 1? Yes, by a smidge and subject to change before Aug. 30. Undefeated? Noooo way. This is Georgia, which lost two games last season and looks pretty good next season, not Oklahoma of the ’50s.
Scott Howard, Bulldog Radio Network. This schedule is like a minefield and I just think it is too difficult to expect the Dogs to go undefeated. But I’ll love it if they do.

I can’t believe this is dated 2/25/08. How many different times are you going to ask this question? The #1 talk has been rehashed without any new insight since the end of the Sugar Bowl. Give it a rest until August or at least give us an original article.

But SP, you have to realize, the AJC is always looking for the UGA angle on just about anything. If they cannot find it, they will simply start writing about something UGA that will generate hype. The AJC is just the Atlanta office of the UGA Hype Machine, Inc.
On a upside note, at least you can go to UGA’s AJC page and get stuff about football. You go to ours and it is all about basketball. Gotta go with the UGA approach on this one.

better question: will UGA make it through the summer and season without having players arrested and/or suspended? and the answer is: NO

You UGA fans are trying to put a size 11 foot in a size 8 shoe. Do y’all realize if your two top offensive players get hurt, you’re back to a 6-6 year ? UGA is not deep at all, so forget undefeated. If Stanford gets one late hit and has to be out for three games, who takes his place ? Johnny Guitar ? Maybe in 2009 but 2008—UGA 8-4

Sure. SO can the Tigers, Vols, Gators,Trojans, Sooners, Tide and the Commodores. The optimism by some fans/papers before the seasaon even starts is HILARIOUS!

No team in the SEC will be able to stay close to Georgia—-Moreno is unstoppable—the next Hershel Walker! UGA rolls it up, win the SEC easily, then beats USC by 10 in Miami for the title. 2008—year of the dawg baby!!! 14-0!

Dale- UGA is not deep? Are you serious? We could be the deepest at every postion in the nation. The only postion we are not deep in is the kicking game. Logan Gray will take Staffords place and will be as good. Caleb king will be better then Knowshon.Hence the 13 scholarships we have for next year.
As far as the Techmites go when your program does something football related then run your mouth.
kool$kat- I guess that would be the first thing I brought up to if my team sucked.

Get a clue you bunch UGAYs, there is no way. I’ll remind you all you had some very close games apart from being destroyed by TN. Do you actually think you will beat UF two years in a row, when was the last time that took place??
Let’s see, biggest basketball game of the year was on Saturday and TN gains a #1 national ranking. No coverage by the AJC in the sports section and it was national news. Give me a break!

I love all the haters. Pretty good sign we’re where they want to be.
Undefeated, unlikely, but if my dawgs (‘91, ‘94) pull it off, I’m not sure I’ll be able to handle it.
But let’s beat Georgia Southern first.

COULD UGA go undefeated? Of course. WILL UGA go undefeated? Much harder. One thing’s for sure: The more we run our damn mouths about it, the harder it’ll be.
I hope we’ll act like we’ve got a little class…and not like that damn FSU scum.

Why do we have to listen to this BS in February? Like a broken record, the Dawgs enter the year thinking they’re better than they really are. Living in the Gator State, I really do see the difference in the annual running of the mouths between the overly optimistic Dawg fans and the just take care of business Gator fans.

palmbeachbuzz, try reading the blog before commenting.did you see one ajc sportswriter quoted?also.if you read the blog you noted that the one bulldog homer did NOT proclaim a nc for uga.i agree with most uga fans, our schedule is very difficult, going undefeated is unlikely.i hope for one loss and a berth in the seccc.win that and a nc game is very possible.honestly,i like our chances better in 2009.

The take care of business Gators? The same Gators who lost to Michigan in their 2nd tier bowl game last year? The same Michigan who lost to Appalachian State? The same Florida who lost to UGA for the 2nd time in the last 4 years (remember the 2 schools started playing before 1990 and UGA leads the overall series thanks in large part to Vince Dooley’s 17 wins over UF). Overly optimistic Dawg fans? Are you referring to the same Dawgs who just played in the BCS Sugar Bowl for the third time in six years? History has passed you by, my friend…

Oh, UT fans…UT beats Memphis and there is no coverage in Atlanta because the event was irrelevant. Why would anyone in Atlanta care about UT basketball? If you’re a T-Vol, then go online and live through some Knoxville news service.

PalmBeachBUZZ? Yeah, OK, I get it. You can’t get a win of your own so you live vicariously through a team that goes .500 with a new coach…OK
Enjoy. See you on the Saturday after Thanksgiving for your yearly spanking!

Are you serious? Of course not. Expect a close loss to Tennessee, and a whipping from Florida. Several other games could go either way. Georgia didn’t deserve to finish #2 last year (especially after the humiliating loss in Knoxville) and their big heads will only make things worse this year.

Georgia is certainly capable of going undefeated, but so are several other teams. My question is, WHY is this question even being asked in this forum at this time ? It’s an unnecessary distraction to the work that we have to do to accomplish that, and does nothing but place a bigger target on our backs than before. I’d suggest that we get about our work, and that the AJC report on things that actually happen, rather than initiating this manner of premature speculation.
IF we accomplish it, let’s talk about it afterward.

David Gardner,
Lets face it. UGA has always had a very competitive football program. The only problem are your fans. They are by FAR the most obnoxious fans in college football! I hope you win every game, with the exception of one.

NEWS FLASH FOR TECH FANS: Us Dawg fans LOVE when you guys get on our blogs and make angry comments. It’s hysterical. Your jelousy just oozes off the screen. The fact is you have so few arguments against our team, you start creating this negative nonsense that compounds the joke that is your team. There is a solution to end your embarassment: accept your mediocrity and stop talking trash until you start winning.

Can Georgia go undefeated? Sure. So “CAN” Duke or Florida International. The question should better be phrased: “WILL” Georgia go undefeated? My answer: maybe. They’ve got a good shot and should have a great team. 11 wins should not be considered a disappointment though. As for Duke and FIU, they “WILL” not come close.

Don’t knock the AJC. They know that as soon as UGA loses their second game, and it will happen , the conversation shifts to recruitin’. All you have to do run the AJC sports rag is: JAN-JULY: Will GA win the SEC and nat champ ? This is the story every year. AUGUST: All UGA fans go beserk during the 30 days before the season OCT: After the second loss, fire the coaches NOV-DEC: Its all about recruiting and wait til next year. All the AJC has to do is pull out the old articles and insert new names. Its easy when you’re communicating to Dawgville.

No, as my Gamecocks will throw them off early in the season and other SEC teams will follow in beating UGA. They will have another great season, but my boys will put the hurt on them early to spoil their wanna be glory. Not many months now til kickoff. Anyone but Clemson and Georgia!

The sheer optimism that sets in on Athens every year is incredible. Every year since 1980 about this time I start hearing things like “We gonna run the table this year buddy, you watch ‘n see”.
If only there was a way to bottle and sell it, we could all be rich.

I can’t see anyone in the SEC beating UGA—-they just have too much talent. The only team that might match up with the dawgs this year is southern cal, but I think Ga beats them by 17 in miami.

I for one hope they are undefeated thru their SEC schedule. That would make for interesting theater come Thanksgiving weekend. Undefeated (or even one loss) UGA facing the triple option for the first time since 2004 when GA Southern ran up 294 yards rushing and put up 28 points. I doubt there are any dawg defenders left with game experience against the triple option. So they’ll be starting from scratch after what I’m sure will be a brutal stretch of SEC games before that. GT will have had 11 games running the option and should have it down by then. I can’t wait.

Hey Gary Rogers
Whipping from Florida? You are talking about the same one-man team that will most likely get injured again before the UF-UGA game. Close loss to Tennessee- Georgia has an off week so that is unlikely. (Tennessee had an off week last year which explains the beating)
Sure UGA can go undefeated in all other conferences. They are in the SEC so its doubtful for now.
